  • The much-anticipated release of the Microsoft Surface Duo has many note takers and daily planners wondering if this device is the productivity device they have been longing for.
Microsoft released the plans for a surface-like phone nearly a year ago. At that time it had been rumored for years that we would see a device that was like a surface and like a phone.
    Questions like:
Will this device be widely accepted?
    How will handwriting work?
Are the duo screens even manageable?
How will this device work with apps like OneNote?
Will the form factor and hardware compete in the market?
These questions have been circling for some time and now we can officially say we have some of the answers.
Through our first impressions video we covered some of the questions that addressed the form factor and hardware as well as our first look at the operating system.
In this video we are going to look at:
Digital Note Taking on the Surface Duo
    OneNote on the Surface Duo
Daily Digital Planning with the Surface Duo
Professional Multi-tasking with email, calendar, OneNote and basic productivity apps.
This device begins to answer some of the concerns that I have had with digital planning when I am mobile. Using the Microsoft Surface Duo with the Key2Success Planner has refreshed my motivation for digital planning and note-taking.

    Your findings mirror my own
I was a Psion 5MX user in the late 90s and I loved that device, the Sony Clie was my companion for a while until th3 Nokia N97 and N900 took its place. I enjoy the iPhone 11 Pro, but the Duo has taken over for most of my mobile computing. And I really enjoy both dual app use as well as note taking in both Evernote and OneNote.

Thank you for this video. This is the first actually helpful display of what you can use this for and not just an opinion. I always look for new ways to use new technology. The problem with tech reviewers is that they only focus on the specs and not the real work uses of the products. I don’t care about the camera I care about what I can do with the tech. I am a fan of the surface products, and as my daily driver(s) use a Surface Book and Surface Pro 3 (yes, still in 2020). This is a great review and really showcases the ability of the device. I'm glad that you talked about the inking and Onenote capabilities in detail, since all the other reviews just focus on the "crappy" camera. Teams takes more time to set up, and integrates with Microsoft's ecosystem of apps, Office, GitHub, LinkedIn, VisualStudio.... Its a solid device, the price tags on phones are reaching that of high end laptops. I guess when you want all personal computing power in your hands, its the price you pay. I know Microsoft won't tell us, but I am wondering what the focus are for updates in the second generation and when the release will be. I would think they would have to push out a release in 12 months because the hardware on this device is really last year spec. Also with 5G expanding that has to be a focus, specially in the business world.

@@bodendorfer yeah it's really nice I tried it out at Best Buy and absolutely loved it. The other big reviewers really trashed this device which there might be some merritt but I think they missed the mark on the true purpose of this device and it's potential. Thatʼs awesome. I love how you were able to maximize the functions of such a device. And you were on point also about how others clamor so much for 'better' camera that would be up to par with those like the Samsung Galaxy and iPhone ones when this wasʼt really meant to be a 'smartphone' per se, but rather a class-of-its-own productivity device.
There is so much that one can get out of their buck with their purchase of this and yours is a prime example. Great job on your planner and I hope youʼll update us on this about other productivity uses of it, e.g. Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Skype, etc.
Great job! I liked and subscribed, too.

Currently I have a notes 8 and received my duo last week. Main decision making was the integration with microsoft surface pro and the use of the handwriting features. After using the microsoft office 365 applications, onenote and teams on the Duo, there is a big need to improve the handwriting tools with the apps. in Notes 8 the pen tool has configurations like to get notifications with the phone separates from the tools, and the handwriting tool integrates with all app. I have all 3 pens. the flat pen is not as comfortable to use as the other two, more practical for mobile. And I am not sure if there will be tip replacements. Kindly include a video on integration with the surface pro. Thank you for all your work...

I have a Note20 Ultra and just use Samsung notes for writing things like reference numbers down real quick etc. It's not suitable for actual note taking though IMO, the Duo looks a lot better for it. Also notice that on the Samsung Note OneNote isn't great for notes as it's not "real" inking and for example if you write near the edge in OneNote it'll trigger the "go back" edge gesture.

What's the pen like compared to your Note? (Which Note?) Looking at the video, which I loved, the pen and zoom looked a little more glitchy than when you are doing the same on the Note. But, amazing to show what this device is really good at and designed to do.

Hello Branden - thank you very much for your video. Your use of OneNote is absolutely new to me - very good. But I also use OneNote every day for my daily notes, research, decisions, etc. and my first group of apps I would set up is the browser on the left and OneNote on the right as you have shown it the last few seconds. I have been watching you very closely and have noticed the following: You did not rest your hand on the display for any note. Is the hand NOT recognized in OneNote? That would be a real NO GO for me. If you want to write cleanly (and your writing was not clean, but blurred), you have to be able to rest your hand on the display while writing. Please answer me if you can support your hand or not - thanks. Best regards from Vienna/Austria/Europe - Klaus

    • @bodendorfer
      @bodendorfer  3 года назад

Klaus - First off I am impressed with your attention to detail. I will do my best to address the questions in your comment.
      1. The reason it looks like I am not resting my hand on the surface as I am using it is because I have a board that is holding the device 1" up off the surface and I am keeping a little space off the glass as you seen. The reason for doing this is to reduce any shadows from the lights onto the device. I can tell you that I rest my palm on the device during normal use. As for the blurred comment, I feel pretty good with the handwriting quality. I would say it slightly one notch over the Samsung Note. If you want to email me I can send you a private video / photo of my using it. contact@brandenbodendorfer.com

    Duo 2 needs:
    - Slimmer bezels, bigger screen
    - Duo Pen built in(similar to Galaxy note)
    - Same exact form(dimensions)
    - Stereo speakers
    - Small outer display
    - Slightly bigger battery(without making device thicker)
    - 90 hz(Not 120hz for fear of battery drain)
    - metal frame instead of plastic
Honestly just adding stereo speakers, and a built in pen would make me jump from my Note to this. This is way more appealing than the Galaxy fold.

Troy Branham Trump is polarising. I see Fox as almost a propaganda channel for the man. Personally I think it pretty shameless. Then you go to the fox comments section and it’s disgusting. Just yesterday I had someone tell me I would make a good target in their crosshairs as I asked them to backup their claim of systemic wide spread voter fraud with evidence.
I must admit when I saw it flash up on the phone I was put off. But that has nothing to do with the surface duo review. People should be able to go to any news site and not cop flack for it. I agree is ridiculous that the reviewer had to deal with it.

Branden Bodendorfer I think there are a lot of folks that have a if I wasn’t so “something” apple statement. Whether it’s iMessage, FaceTime, Apple Pay, Apple Watch integration, etc. I try android every 3 to 4 years and I find that I cannot use FaceTime or iMessage, now Apple Card, NFC on subway, then I come right back and get bored 3 to 4 years later and try android. The cycle continues. Now I have a s20 with galaxy watch active 2. But not getting navigation on watch from google maps is a pain point, for me. New apple fitness is compelling. Especially during this time to be fore fit. So I will probably get the iPhone 12 mini and sell off the android hardware.
