      Great review and comparison!
One thing I would like to point out is, on the Z Fold 4, if you open Internet browser (I don't believe it works on other browsers), then long press on a link, you can drag the link to the side or top, and it will open alongside the home page you are currently on, just like opening a 2nd app, leaving the original page open.
      Thanks for a great comparison!

I need to be able to view a documents and fill out forms at the same time with a lot of scrolling on both pages to work down the pages- which would be better? The Duo keyboard would only be available on one screen, the Fold 4, it seems like the keyboard would collapse every time I click off of it
      your thoughts?

Great points about the Bezels, the war against bezels is one of those things we are fed in lieu of actual innovation, the number of times I’ve passed someone (of someone has passed me) a device to show them something, and in taking hold of the device I’ve completely lost the item by accidental input - just using this as an example as it literally just happened to me a few minutes ago!
I just find it crazy, the OEMs have convinced us we want edge to edge displays without really thinking about whether we REALLY want them or not.

    • @Icybubba

After having just got a Duo, I would still argue that the bezels should be a little smaller, but I agree, edge to edge isn't something I need or maybe even want

they didnt convince us of anything. People were complaining of aesthetics due to phones having huge chins and foreheads. People were complaining that phones had ugly bezels, people were complaining about phones not getting the most out of their real estate. This was the industry response. Notches, popup cameras, face unlock, in display finger print scanner, curved displays, under display speakers, under display front cameras.... all of this is a response to the consumer wanting more phone in a smaller footprint.... more screen and less bezels. They fed us nothing.... they responded to the criticism with innovation

The biggest difference isn’t design: each has strengths and weaknesses, and it comes down to preference. The gap (no pun intended) is that EVERYBODY knows about the Fold, whereas the only advertising I remember for the Duo was the “flippin’ it around” ones from 1 1/2 years ago. My niece has a Fold 3 but complains about the width and could never understand the multitasking. I showed her my Duo 2 and she immediately got the concept… but she had never heard of it before.
That may be a good thing, though, considering the debacle of the original Duo launch. The Surface Pro didn’t really get the push until version 3 when it was a polished product. Maybe Microsoft will use the same strategy with the Duo.

Great video discussing the pros and cons of two great devices!
I personally prefer devices with a wider screen and the current trend of 21:9 format just does not work for me. Z Fold 4 just feels too slim, and the slightly wider aspect of 16:9 makes for a much more enjoyable screen experience in my opinion. I bought an Xperia XZ2 as it was last model before the fad of tall thin devices arrived.
The Duo 2 is about as good as it gets for me! I think it might be a 4:3 ratio there, but I love the screen space!

I think if the duo had a single screen with the same functionality (don't change anything in software but just make a single folding panel) I'd be more willing to go back to it. The fold for me takes it right now because they software is just a little more optimized (in my experience) for the device itsself. The popup windows on the fold really make a difference. Balancing the checkbook twice a month is just a lot easier on the fold than the duo (bank app, sheets, chrome, and calculator) without needing to switch back and forth between different screens. When I did have the duo I just couldn't get past having just 2 apps. Even the LG dual screens could have 3 apps.

I love hearing this kind of feedback from someone who has actually used both, since I'm planning to eventually get a Duo 3 or a competing folding phone, depending on the specifics when the time comes. I’m curious, did you try installing a floating window app on your Duo 2? I have one on my Pixel 2XL, so even though I only have one screen, I can have another app floating in a resizable window. I think this would work great on the large screens of the duo

Very nice video Shane. The best 2 app multitasking is the Duo 2 of course. Z fold 4 is mostly for those who need one larger/table like screen. Im sure they do not really multitask on it. For me the best from factor on a folding phone is the Oppo Find N2 fold which unfortunately does not have a international version. Hopefully the OnePlus V fold is similar. While i used both Surface Duo 2 and Oppo Find N2 fold the Duo is a secondary device whereas the Oppo could be a daily. I don't t really remember how the back gesture behaved when the multitasking was on! I miss the Surface Duo but for sure is not even close to being there yet!!

The swipe back on the app only works if you entered different things within the app .
So if you were to type a search in on the fold in split screen then swipe back it would go back to the home page of the play store but if you never did anything in the playstore and press back the fold knows you didn't do anything on that app so back means back to full screen on the opposite app to give it priority because it knows you never did anything .
Also on the fold when your in one app you can tap the screen and a small bar appears at the top and tap that for split screen and choose any app and you can constantly do that in split screen or when viewing one app without ever using the dock or side panel. If you don't see it you have to turn it on in labs it's called show multi window with one window

If you don't want to do the multi finger swipe, go to Settings > Advanced Features > Labs and select "Show multi window menu with 1 window." It'll put a small grey bar across the top of any app that'll give you a menu that does the same thing the 2 finger swipe does, but without the awkward gesture

Well, I now have both devices. Just couldn't resist the price of the duo. I am so pleasantly surprised at how much I like the duo. I kinda thought the two screens would annoy me but I actually like it. I agree that multitasking is much easier for me on the duo. I don't even mind the split as much as I thought I would. I watched a movie the other day and after a while I just wasn't paying attention to the split. But when I want just a tablet experience I usually go for my Z Fold 4. Now here's a weird comment. If I had to pick just one, I'd probably pick the Z Fold for what I do. But if I never had the Zfold and bought the Duo first for the outrageous price that I did, I would have never bought the Zfold. Does that even make sense? Finally the only reason I can't use the Duo for my daily driver is become as of Jan 17 2023 it is no long is supported by Dexcom which is my diabetes meter and I have no idea why. They just simply stopped supporting it. Even the APK app just won't work. Frustrating but anyway, loving both devices.

Yike, the Z Fold really looks like a brick in the hand. Multitasking is really subjective, but I agree with the gesture control per app, makes so much more sense on the Duo. You scan the internet about the Zfold, most people's idea of being productive is watching something, while scrolling something else.. I feel the Duo definition is replying to emails while taking notes in OneNote. Very different use case. ;)

My Duo 2's SIM is currently in my S10e so it would be less hassle to move my data over via Smart Switch to the Fold 4. However, after watching this again, I'll stick with the Duo. I remembered how much more annoyed I was trying to multi-task on my Fold 3, as well as getting frustrated going back on the wrong app. I just wish Microsoft would create an equivalent of Smart Switch.

I just upgraded from the LG V60 (always with the dual screen case on) to the Fold 4.
I know the Surface Duo is like the V60 on steroids (minus maybe the cameras), but what made me pick the Fold over the Duo 2 is that with the Fold, I really feel like I am getting 2 devices in one. I love having the smaller front screen that I can quickly either add notes or to dos, respond to messages, basically things that are quick and suited for a smaller screen.
However, when I need a bigger screen or to have multiple apps running, I can unfold the phone and have what I think is a great size screen for a tablet. To me, it is almost 2 completely different experiences where as with the dual screen concept, its just like I have 2 screens.
With all of that being said though, if you gave me a Duo 2 I could easily make it work and would very much enjoy the wider screens and more seamless multitasking. At the end of the day though, I like the smaller phone aspect of the Fold and then have the ablity to open up the larger display. The mulitasking options on the Fold are amazing too.

Shane, I think all is about muscle memory only. To conclude that Doo or Fold would be more intuitive is in my opinion not right. I give you an exampüle based on what you demonstrated. I am used to the behaviour that the back gesture on Fold applies always to the current app, independent of whether I use the back gesture from left or right. You said, it should apply to the left app if it comes from left and to the right app if it comes from right. That would drive me crazy while you are used to it. And what if both apps where located on top of each other? What would you expect then? Gesture from left should close the top app or the bottom app? In this case, applying the gesture to the current app seems to be more logical. I would say, Fold's behaviour is perfect for the Fold and Duo's behaviour is perfect for Duo. They have two completely different concepts. And their respective users appreciate the respective UI as designed.

For instance on the Fold, I can have RUclips, twitter and Reddit open at the same time, AND have my chat apps, discord, email, instagram and the rest of my most used apps ready in an onscreen bubble tray, that will open instantly for quick interaction, then minimize instantly when I’m done, allowing me to return quickly to what I was doing, without skipping a beat. Certainly if the Z Fold 4 were 1cm wider, the outer screen would be in 18:9 or 16:10 or 16:9 format, but the inner screen would be almost perfect without being panoramic, perhaps close to a 3:2 and not as 4:3 (as now) or more 4:3. Gestures are like any big screen OS, Windows 11 has gestures and it also involves 1 more tap or drag. It is the difference between having a device with two screens or one and there will be those who, due to the way they use it, will prefer multitasking with one or the other. It depends on the use and the day to day of each one.

I have pretty large hands and I find the wideness of the Duo irreplaceable compared to other phones... I'll always pick the Duo over the Fold or anything.
I'm about to get my second Duo 2 over the weekend and I'm so excited... Best buy insurance plan I got I'm only paying a $280 deductible. NICE!!

I had to smile when you said about whether or not multitasking is a brick for us, because that is why I won't buy a Fold 4 - I had the Fold 2 and sold it within a week, because it looks like a brick, feels like a brick in my pocket and I just really didn't like the fact it was like two skinny phones plastered together to create one screen. But the Duo is unapologetically two screens - it's not a brick, it's a productivity device and I love them. So yes, for me it wasn't that the multitasking concept was a brick for me compared to a stone, it was that I still look at your Fold and think "brick" lol. Love this and yes, the bezels.

The Surface Duo 1 is just ideal for me - it's not exactly a phone in my use case, but it is a very good tablet experience. Watching Netflix in a rumbling bus is impossible on the Fold since it does not offer a proper kickstand mode. Duo on the other hand is super flexible. And I prefer the 1 since it is just perfectly designed for closing it without a camera hinge. I can live without a proper camera since in exchange.

If the fold "folded" along the x-axis instead of the y-axis I think it would be greatly improved (better suited for the different configurations and taking best use of screen real estate). The ability to open three and four windows is cute, but aside from a calculator, is rather impractical.
Realistically, I never really find the need to "span" a video as the screen size is sufficient enough on one screen (Duo) AND I can orient the device to stand on its own.
Simply put, the devices are different in the way Football and Soccer are different, but both are called Football, played on a field, by 2 opposing teams, with a ball, etc.
Comparisons will be made and use cases will vary ... For me it's DUO, but a cover display of any sorts would be welcomed

Excellent review! Each has it's advantages and disadvantages. However, you can get a brand new Duo 2 for under $1000 at Best Buy or through Microsoft (before any trades) while the Fold 4 costs almost twice as much. Viewed through price, the Fold 4 is in my opinion not twice as good as the excellent Duo 2.

I do a lot of driving for work. I run Waze on my left screen and am able to use the phone or any other app on the right screen without causing any issue for my GPS. Duo is the ONLY phone that can do that. Before I got the Surface Duo, it would never fail that I'd miss a turn because someone would call me when a turn was coming up. That never happens with the Duo.

I do a lot of driving for work too and have been putting Maps in a floating window on the Fold 4 or have it pinned as a 3rd app open.. The screen size is so big any way I put it that I can still see where i need to go. Granted my driving is mostly to the same areas so I don't need to always be looking at it. Getting my V60 with the dual screen in 2021, having maps open all the time but still being able to use my phone was a HUGE improvement.

Great video as usual Shane. So I have gone from my Duo 1 to the Fold 4. Loved my Duo but I think the Fold is getting close. It's a tap and then a 2 finger swipe to go to split screen instead of a tap on the Duo. Add to that Samsung notes and the pen in a silo (which also acts as stand and protects the cameras) Flex mode if you need to stand like the Duo (albeit iPhone 13 mini size screen) and lastly being able to go full screen without the gap makes the Fold 4 a worthy productivity competitor.

much better fr getting things done. I will stick with the duo 2 untill the duo 3 comes out and then I will either switch to it or to a in a year or two.

The Fold's multitasking is very similar to my idea of optimum for multitasking. Dragging and dropping apps where you want them, plus having the flexibility of an unbroken n canvas is pretty sweet. I'm afraid Microsoft is going with a folding OLED for the next Duo. Maybe if it is treated like the Duo--ie each side of the screen is its own area, then it might be OK. But say goodbye to the thin profile for sure.
