  • The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is here and instead of doing a traditional Surface Laptop Studio Unboxing I thought I would do a full Surface Laptop Studio vs Surfacebook 3 comparison! I thought this would help Surfacebook 3 owners to see if they need to upgrade or not. This does serve as a Surface Laptop Studio Review but I will do doing a longer term review once I use it for about a month or so to really gather my thoughts. Here I cover surface laptop studio performance, surface laptop studio gaming and all the other things that help make a buying decision. Let me know which one would you pick Surfacebook 3 vs Surface Laptop Studio? Is this the best laptop 2021?

      The Surface Book Hinge never bothered me at all but I understand everyone doesn't share the same opinion on it that I do. I had a SB1 on initial release and now have a SB3 (15", i7, 1TB, 32GB RAM, RTX 3000). I have been a big fan and I was ready to upgrade to whatever was announced but this just doesn't feel like a worthy upgrade. No 15" option. No SD card slot. A downgrade from in graphics card tier to the 3050 series instead of 3060 series (or in my case the RTX 3000 and A2000 perform nearly identical). 4GB instead of 6GB in VRAM. No XBox wireless. It also seems like the keyboard may no longer be backlit. It seems like they downgraded a good chunk of the computer despite attempting to create a form that should have offered improvements in these areas. I love the idea of a better CPU and Thunderbolt but these tradeoffs should not have to be made for it. It almost feels like it was better to just keep the hinge and add Thunderbolt and newer generation internals.

    I just got my Laptop Studio today. I am blown away. not only does look a lot better in person but it works really well. I don't need the multiple positions. the 3 positions it has are all I need. but what really blows me away is the sound. the sound is the best I've ever heard in a laptop. and the plinth. it isn't even noticeable in person. I don't even notice it. and it's lighter than I expected. I know its 3.8 lbs for the I-5 that I got but it doesn't feel it. Probably because my laptop at work which is Dell is heavier and feels heavier. so far, I am loving it.

    Just got my Surface Laptop Studio yesterday. I had the SB2, skipped SB3, didn't see much of an improvement to upgrade. I'll admit I was a bit worried about the 1600p vs the 2160p from my SB2. I will say there is no noticeable difference. by default the SB2/3 will scale 200% so effectively you are operating in 1080p as far as screen space, but with more pixels images are a bit sharper. The SLS, scales 150% by default which again puts you around 1080p real estate size. Here's the kicker, you can operate the SLS in 125% and the scaling is still super smooth. 100% on the SB2 is way too small to read and 150% the scaling is awful. Also if you're using an external monitor, i have a 4K Lenovo and the scaling is super smooth between screens. This could be a Win 11 thing but I'm sure you've all experienced lag drag moving a word doc or something from one screen to another and then Windows has to rescale the font. That is all gone. I am amazed. Not sure I like the new Win 11 start, but most other features of Win 11 are a huge improvement.

    • @bmbell71
      @bmbell71 2 года назад +3

      I should also point out, the screen fold on the SLS is really the best for this device. On the SB2 for me to go from laptop mode to note taking, I have to detach the screen, flip it around reattach, fold down, get the screen to reorient. The new form factor you go straight from laptop to taking notes in seconds seamlessly. For the advantages of having a detachable tablet, you go from a 15 watt CPU to a 35 watt CPU, plus anyone who owned a SB dealt with the pain of the GPU being ejected in laptop mode from the bug introduced in the 2019 fall creator's update.

    • @NL0Gwenster
      @NL0Gwenster 2 года назад

      @@bmbell71 ... I had the SB1 and SB2, but both i didn't had the nvidia discreet GPU on it. Didn't really need it. So never experienced the bug of detaching to switch from nvidia to iGPU. I used the SB for photo-retouching in Photoshop with the pressure sensitive pen, for which an i5 is more than enough. And having an assistant on shoot with just the detached tablet monitoring things with the camera tethered to it via wifi. So yeah personally, for my use case i'm kind of sad there isn't a SB4.

    • @NeKa..
      @NeKa.. 2 года назад +11

      I have been using SB3 and it's sad there may not be further versions of it. It's beautifully clean design with a balanced spec. Not to mention, it's the biggest tablet with full pc...I must admit that I am not docking/undocking the screen all day, but it definitely feels more seamless when I use it as laptop for work during the day (in clamshell or studio mode) and just the screen as tablet for media consumption and lightweight productivity in the evening...all this without any need to jump between different OS and devices... I feel the surface book (and surface line in general) doesn't get enough credit for pushing the boundaries with their innovative and original designs while 'balancing' power and performance with versatility and productivity. SLS looks nice indeed while having beefier specs, but the trade off is that SB3 is 2 [seperable] devices, while SLS is a 2-in-1 device. It made my ipadpro redundant, which started feeling very limited and unexciting.I never knew I would be saying this being a lifelong apple user up until a year ago. However, most reviews are like Olympics tally chart with highest scores in geekbench, cinebench, gaming and video editing and don't fairly represent the majority of us who are non/light-gamers and not video editors.

      @NeKa.. 2 года назад +2

      @@alexhamilton2867 In my 1+ year experience BsoD has never happaned. Then again, I don't need to dock/undock it all the time, maybe 3-4 times a day max. Most of the devices it's connected to are bluetooth (screen) so not an issue. If I am working in an app that use the GPU (base) it just simply wont detach with message "close xyz app to detach". It is mostly in Studio mode for writing and drawing for my work or the classic clamshell when it's typing heavy work days. I only really detach it for changing modes or use it as tablet for media consumption or reading or entertainment. But that's the beauty of it, I can do so when I want. With say SLS, I cannot use it in potrait mode for reading in bed. i think both SB3 and SLS fill different gaps that's why it not called SB4. I am glad there is more choice now because not many may have my use case indeed.

    Everyone is different, so maybe you will be less sensitive to this, but I wanted to share my experience.
    I have the SB215 and I was able to test out the SLS at Micro Center a few months ago. I have to be honest, I went in very excited about upgrading to the Studio as my next, and left pretty confident it wouldn't be.
    I run my SB215 at 200% to maximize the sharpness of text and icons-think of the first retina display iPhone-and looking at the lower res menus and desktop items, I was very disappointed to the point I knew I couldn't make the switch. This is after watching hours of reviews and really getting my hopes up, so I definitely wasn't biased against the new design. If anything, I was hoping to be able to defend M$'s new direction, but it's sadly a miss for me.
    Reviewers are emphasizing the new hinge as the major difference, but since I rarely use the SB in other modes, the biggest difference for me is definitely the display. I was immediately struck-kinda surprised-by how blurry the screen looked compared to the Surface Book, and it only took me about 20 seconds of use to come to my conclusion.
    FWIW, in-person, the new XPS 15 and Razer Blade Stealth-they oddly didn't have the full-size Razer Blade-made a much better impression, although I'm pretty sure my upgrade is a ways off now. Hope this helps someone!

    I have a Surface Book 2 and I have a tablet holder that holds it in place above my treadmill, so I'm able to use the computer, walk, run, while doing work or watching RUclips videos. The only reason why that's possible is because the detachable screen is lighter in weight then the full 4 lbs if you include the keyboard.
    It's a very useful feature to have a detached screen, so I would say making improvements to a detached screen is better than making a screen that isn't attached in order to avoid problems.

      I have the surface book 3 and there are definitely both pros and cons when it comes to using the SB3 in the classroom.
      In tablet mode, the battery life is very poor. I can get 2-3 hours of continuous use before needing to charge which isn’t great. The 15 inch model is very big and sometimes gets heavy to use. Also, you cannot detach if some programs use the GPU instead of integrated graphics. For example, Chrome by default uses the GPU so you’ll have to close it before detaching.
      The SB3 is a really neat concept, and the tablet is really good when I need to quickly do live demonstrations of math problems because it connects so well with projectors, but I feel that the rotating screen of the SBS might help me more in the long run.

    As a SB3 owner, I'm sad to see its demise even though it's a flawed product. You really need to be using it in laptop mode most of the time for it to be a good laptop, but wasn't the point to be able to use it as both a tablet and a laptop? It's almost the same size as my wife's 12.7 in iPad Pro once she has it in a case so while it's big it's usable in tablet mode with the caveat of being near an outlet or using it for really small periods of time. I was hoping for a future incarnation with better tablet battery life. My Surface Book in tablet only mode gets only about 45 minutes to an hour of RUclips before it's dead! Longer with web browsing but not by much. A surface go gets much better battery life in tablet mode! Seriously I'd take this thing when I'd wait for my daughter in the carpool lane at school right when schools reopened after covid, and it was dead when I got home every day! When docked forward or backwards it gets real respectable run times that competes with my 13in MacBook Pro as most if the unit's battery capacity is in the battery that's in the base. While he does mention turning the screen around on the SB3, he doesn't mention plugging the surface connector directly into the tablet. This helps with that battery life if you're near an outlet. It will also charge the tablet but not the whole PC if you have a smaller wattage surface charger. I for example tend to sit in my favorite chair in the morning by a window, criss-cross applesauce with a cup of coffee using it in tablet only mode, and since I have a surface Go 2 as well, I leave its lower wattage plugged in by that chair so I can charge both devices there. The full wattage one is in my room and charges both devices there as sometimes I do more serious work there to get away from noise, and I have the surface dock at my desk. A solution that can charge both devices in 3 places. Again, another battery solution is to turn the screen around and use it as a tablet with a large base which I find great for writing or drawing due to the angle, and in bed using the base to hold it at a good viewing angle on my belly in a 90-degree angle with the screen facing toward me and keyboard facing away. I sometimes consider giving up the book and the go for a pro 8 with LTE. If it were 5g I'd already be there.

    Currently typing from a SB3, and whatever you do DO NOT GET THIS THING. Countless people including myself have had an issue with the gpu 'disappearing' and disconnecting from the system (not showing in device or task manager), and there is no permanent solution. U are essentially relying on your warranty, and that cannot last forever. This is my 6th SB3 (gotten replacements from the gpu issue), which shows the consistency of this issue. Proceed at our own risk.

  • @cc_snipergirl

    I love the idea of the studio, but at that price point, I want to run games at high settings. But for work, I'd absolutely love the decent power combined with the color accurate folio screen. I just don't know if it's worth the cost, or if I could just get a separate tablet with a more powerful computer.

    • @soniccookie655
      @soniccookie655 2 года назад

      It’s definitely a niche market. For me the ability to move around the house with a drawing tablet/PC in one is worth it, and it could be the difference between getting something done or not. But if you tend to work at a desk and stay put it’s probably a better option to get a separate drawing tablet.

    I was excited when they included thunderbolt ports but then disappointed when they didn't use a detachable screen. You say there were no great use cases for it but the OS is literally designed for tablet use but what about the use case of watching movies or RUclips? The screen is light and not as bulky to hold and you can take it with you without much effort and it's still useful on the road.

    • @dannywinget

      Unfortunately I don’t have that one but general performance and everyday use the Laptop Studio is going to be a better choice.

    • @mini9503
      @mini9503 2 года назад +2

      Quadro 3000 in the SB3 is equal to 2070 Max-Q, which is double the performance of 3050 Max-Q in SLS. The Intel's H35 CPU is practically identical to Intel's 28W U-series chip in Cinebench R23 Multi-core, both scoring around 6,000 points with 500 points margin of error. So the old Surface Book 15 is a _much_ more powerful system overall than the new Laptop Studio.

    The Surface Laptop Studio is similar in size to the 13.5" SB3 which has a GTX 1650 Max-Q, which it replaces.
    Your comparison is with the much bigger 15" SB3, which is in a different class, for which they will probably make a replacement for, next year.
    And don't forget that the Surface Laptop Studio has H series CPU this time, which has to be cooled too in the same base, and they have to be able to keep the screen cool when in Studio mode.

    • @dannywinget
      @dannywinget  2 года назад +2

      I mentioned the size in the video. That was the point of the video. The 15” was the best and most powerful and the laptop studio is better in every way besides the ports. I think it came across correctly.

    • @_Digitalguy
      @_Digitalguy 2 года назад

      it’s similar in overall size, but the screen is closer to the 15in, thanks to small bezels and the device is actually heavier than the 15in book
