    I bought the 15 inch with Quadro. I've spent 40 hours of 3d modeling in 3 platforms, rendering in 3, photo editing, 3d texturing, and even video editing. It does some things extremely well, even prefer it to my desktop. Some things it does very poorly. All in all happy with the purchase and will be keeping it.

    • @hunterm9
      @hunterm9 4 года назад +9

      I'd recommend the HP Spectre. Not perfect, the surface definitely gets better durability and ease of "switch" to 2-in-1, but basically everything else is the same or similar, at half the price.

    • @stinkee2
      @stinkee2 4 года назад +17

      Depending on how you define "good", the Surface Book 1 could work out for you. I bought one after the Surface Book 2 came out years ago and I still use it daily. It was relatively cheap on ebay and it feels pretty tough. I've carried it around in backpacks and briefcases loaded with stuff and the hinge remains strong and the finish is mostly scratch free. It's not super powerful (I got the lowest end model) but it has always been enough for me. I have a desktop for gaming so I don't need much from my laptop. The keys haven't worn down, the original pen still works (and I only had to replace the pen's non-rechargeable battery once!), the batteries are still good, It's still pretty much like new except I had to dab some gorilla glue on one of the rubber feet to keep it from coming off recently. If something happens to this one I might even buy another one to replace it.

    • @stinkee2
      @stinkee2 4 года назад +5

      In addition to all that, I'm seeing them for ~$500 on ebay right now for the low end models, ~$1200 for the models with dedicated GPUs and such.

    Solid Review. I used to work as an Engineer (now Patent Law) and have noticed that most decent workstations are able to display large assemblies fairly well in CAD, (even a docked ThinkPad T480S was adequate) but a stronger distinction comes when doing kinematics simulations or FEA, so I would recommend that for a better gauge of premium laptops in the field.

It as plenty of power. Rendering Blender you say, fine, render things on the go or the odd small project. But if you're using blender as a professional I hope you have a proper workstation for that. My feet have rested on this tucked under airplane seats in front of me for years. It literally has dents in the case from being dropped over the years. Still it runs 100%. I'll probably hang on to this until the Surface Book 4 comes along.

    Having used my Surface Book since 2016, I can tell you that is still my do-everything device... (obviously except being a phone)... But yeah it is my poor's-man Gaming Rig, it is my main work device for 3D design, graphic design, etc.. it is my main entertainment device (netflix, youtube, etc)... I even took a couple of class courses on it.
    This is the only device that gives me unmatched versatility for conceiving ideas, sketching, then designing and modeling....

    • @buccob
      @buccob 4 года назад +4

      @@faahym what's your background? And what do you expect to do with either of those devices?...
      As an example, I am a mechanical engineer but now I mostly work as an industrial designer and graphic designer (self taught). I can run SolidWorks 2017 ok with small assemblies (using the dGPU), with older versions I was able to run solidworks with intel's integrated gpu.
      I occasionally draw and sketch in Sketchbook, nice enough to present design ideas, but not the best for say, an illustrator.
      Lastly, I play games but limited to 720p or 1080p in low settings for titles usually older than 2016... (Dying Light, Alien Isolation, Outlast 2, etc)
      Obviously the Surface Book 3 would be more than capable for all the things I listed, but I still wanted to make this remark since you might find yourself in a similar position 4~5 years down the road.
      All in all is a great device if you like Windows and if you know you can at least try to explore its different use cases.
      I still detach my display for reading, watching RUclips or Netflix, but I know people that uses the SB like a regular laptop and that is a bit of a waste of engineering and the investment on this device.

      Been looking for this type of comment also. I'm also a mechanical engineer and going back to grad school so most of my note taking needs a pen for writing out extensive equations with all sorts of greek letters. I would undoubtedly also be using this for entertainment and some casual gaming (Civ, maybe Legend of Zelda, Hearthstone, etc). I can't find anything that has the versatility and well-roundedness of this machine.

      Wecams on Surface devices has been underrated until we gone to lockdowns, then we realized that we cams are still relevant and how crappy on most laptops. Even MacBooks for whatever reason equipped really bad Webcam for a premium laptop.
      Hopefully we will see better Webcam on other OEM's next time. Then Microsoft will feel the competition and might try to slim down the bezels. Not that it's really huge considering its a tablet, but maybe as thick as iPad Pro bezels which isn't razor thin but thinner that Surface Book, and iPad Pro is a pure tablet.

    I was lucky enough to get the original Surface Book halfway through university, and it’s still in good shape now. At the time it completely changed how I worked, with handwritten notes being Ctrl+f searchable in One Note and no more carrying paper around for problem sheets was incredible. Having the pen to write down maths equations and still having the power to run Inventor or OpticStudio interactively is something I still don’t see many laptops doing well. Also used the screen release several times a day for ~5 years now, and it’s still working fine. Completely recommended if you can stomach the price.

    Long battery life, being able to draw with a pen on the screen, even able to detach it, and an actual GPU that is usable makes it really great IMO.
    If I could make one change, I'd improve on the monitor hinge. It would be a lot better if it could go 180 degree so you can put it securely on the desk without turning it around via detaching. The screen is just a bit too wobbly to leave the base attached while drawing more than a quick sketch.

    Why not just get a 2 in 1? 360 deg hinge and it's essentially a tablet (albeit slightly thicker). And it's a lot cheaper for the same specs. No issues switching between laptop & tablet modes - you just flip it over & go. Also, lower temps due to having enough space for a good fan.

    Microsoft's inclusion of a 1080p webcam is looking prescient right now as pretty much all business meetings over the past 4 months have moved to online video / conference calls.

    How amazing it is that none of the reviews mention that in past these surface devices had screen losing full or partial touch. I had surface book 1 then 2 both had it. Surface pro 6 I had had the same problem a part of screen doesn’t respond to touch.

    wth the surface book was released 5 years ago? I thought it was like 2-3 years

      There was the Surface Book 2 in 2017, and the original in 2015, so it started 5 years ago but the latest ones are from 2-3 years ago

      Sabita Kumari I know right? CPU too weak compared to competitors, but need a 15W chip? Hmmmmm if only an 8 core 16 thread 15W CPU existed...
      Are they just too lazy to design a second motherboard?

      I mean they already did it with Surface Laptop 3 (it was 3000 series though). They're not using thunderbolt, so idk what's stopping them

    I think the best way to game on a surface book is by playing on an external monitor, while also turning off the SB's display so that the heat from the LCD is no longer present. I get fairly decent temps doing that.

    4:00 that pen latency is so bad compared to the iPad Pro and its 120Hz display! I remember closer to when the Surface Book line originally launched it was just such a unique and exciting new product, but now it feels like Microsoft has more or less abandoned it. Hope they’ll come out with a redesign soon that fixes its issues and makes it more exciting again.

    It's not just the tablet functionality. The main selling point is the canvas mode where you put the screen on the other way round and you get the angled screen for pen input along with the full battery and GPU. For various kinds of professionals this is pretty much the only device that negates the need for an array of other products.

      I believe he meant people that need a dedicated tablet, without any of the weight of a 2-in-1. The tablet portion of the Surface Book is significantly lighter.
