I have been using my Surface Book 2 (15-inch) for almost three years now and I could not imagine going back to a regular laptop. The pen, the touch screen and the tablet mode are capabilities that I just cannot live without. I am a high school physics teacher and not a day goes by that I don't pull off the screen in class, grab the pen, and show the students how to solve physics problems on the big screen. But when class is over, I love how the Surface Book gives me all the power I need to prepare new lessons and do other administrative work that makes the Surface Book like a desktop. Seriously, I will never accept the "advantage" of purchasing a laptop without the capabilities of the Surface Book again.

SARA, as a trick by having my Surface Book for 4 years already, you do not need to detach and re-attach the display, just open the Device Manager and hit the "Scan for Hardware Changes" and it will automatically recognize the dGPU. It is a lot faster than doing the party trick.
Also, I don't know if this happened to everybody, but my Surface Book (2016) had an Nvidia update and now there is a GPU activity icon in my notification bar next to the Surface detach icon. I can now quickly glance at it to see if the dGPU is being used and by what program (it will light up colors, instead of the idle grayscale). If this is a general update for every Surface Book, or every device with an NVidia GPU, then it might be useful.

I'm actually happy that most people are experiencing this issue with the gpu not being detected. I've had this problem on 7 surface book 2 15" models. I've complained about this on the forums, to reps, advisors and they said they'll look into it. The moment I sold my last SB2 model to get myself something else, I found out that Microsoft fixed this issue on the SB2. Now I'm hearing this problem is now occuring in the SB3 models. There are a variety of ways to fix this.
    1.) Restart the computer.
2.) Detach and reattach the screen unit.
3.) Go into device manager and scan for new hardware changes.

I prefer the tablet detachable from Surface Book 3. It is flat at the back, also less weight 719g after detachable. It is easy for drawing and taking note. My wish list for the Surface Book 4 is move the headphone to the end with the hinge. Also use the upcoming Tiger Lake H Series 8 Core /16 Threads CPU or an AMD 8 Core CPU. The Tablet part needs to compete with an iPad Pro so maybe we will see an ARM based Soc when Microsoft get their Windows on ARM native x64 legacy app support in order. Upgrade the storage to PCIe 4.0 NVME and finally support Thunderbolt 4.0 which also adds USB4 as a bonus. I don't mind the bezels but would add a kick stand to the screen. Add speakers to the keyboard base to boast bass frequencies.

This was an excellent video. As I own the Surface Book, I pretty much agree with everything said in this video. The problem is, I have run into so many bugs and weird anomalies. They don't happen all the time, but just the sheer # of quirks that keep popping up, well, I've decided to return mine. I would love to be able to blame the issues on Windows, but I also just received an Asus G14 gaming laptop and the amount of issues I have setting that up and using it is dramatically lower than what I experienced on the Surface Book, so I know it isn't all about windows. So instead, I am forced into two devices, the G14 for around $1,400 for gaming and probably a very portable 2&1 like a Samsung Book Flex or an HP Spectre for everything else since I love the flexibility of hinges. Both devices together would cost the same as the Surface Book I''m returning.
Surface Book is a great product, super versatile, but the quirks/bugs and limitations are just not worth the cost.

Also, after requesting a return label from Microsoft on Saturday, which took hours just to be told there was a problem sending me a UPS label even though they refunded the warranty, which 2 days later I still haven't received...and have to wait 72 hours just to call them back about that label...well...that has also soured my experience.

I have the Apple iPad Pro 11 inch model, and it's difficult for me to use it in handheld mode because I don't have that much room to hold the device. I'm able to use my older Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Surface Go first generation computers in handheld mode because of the bezels. Even with my Samsung Galaxy S10+ phone in an Otterbox Defender case, I get accidental side touches because of the curved edge-to-edge screen.
I know manufacturers are trying to push us to the "all screen devices" seen in the movies, but I wish they tried to use their devices for more than an hour (maybe try a week).

I realize this video is a bit old, but the lack of Thunderbolt 3 is a security feature, because the device is meant to survive "evil maid" attacks by also having the memory and processor soldered onto the board. The M.2 SSD is removable but Bit Locker is enabled by default, and getting to the SSD is basically destructive, so HIGHLY tamper evident if not tamper resistant. TB3 has access modes from sleep that can leak tons of information from the machine without having to log in, so they aired on the side of caution. The dock handles most needs for additional displays and a full Ethernet port (I still use my Gen 1 Surface Book and that's what I use at home), so not having the TB3 is a trade-off. They could do better for cooling to get a better CPU but then it would be even MORE top heavy, so... again, trade-off.

I am a retoucher and CG artist. I would strongly urge avoiding this machine. I am about to receive my 6th - yes 6th - replacement device from Microsoft. They are fantastic computers when they work, but so far the longest one has gone without needing tech support and an eventual return is about 4 weeks. Touch and input died on one, bluetooth radio died in another, keyboard in one, speaker in another, and the hinge was super wobbly in another. If I could get my money back I would, in a heart beat. I've lost days of time dealing with support (who are great, just not the devices) and ended up buying something else to have something I can rely on for work.

Just to adds to the video top heavy means better thermal better heat dissipation leading to better performance since gpu and cpu both part of the panels not at the bottom of keyboard where heat has hard time to escape but only noticeable if you doing heavy intense processing or graphical work like video editing. Top heavy does has its bonuses

A couple things you left out that I think are important, the 15” can get a quaddro meaning if you need the touch screen and that then the surface book is you’re only option, also even if you don’t agree, addressing the reason Microsoft didn’t put in thunderbolt should still be mentioned as being because of security reasons.

  • @Trillykins

8:30 Not to critique or anything, but the $2700 Surface 3 configuration is actually the same price as the equivalently spec'd MacBook Pro "16 you mention which uses a 9th generation CPU where the Surface uses a 10th generation CPU.

Thanks for the review Sara. Judging from this it looks like nothing has changed since my time with the Surface Book 2, and I think you summed it up perfectly. The Surface Book series tries to do so many things, that it doesn't do any one thing particularly well. Don't get me wrong, the hardware design is fantastic, and I wanted it to be great (I didn't fork out $3600+ AUD to be disappointed). But there just has not been enough effort made to make the hardware and software come together. In all honesty I think the tablet mode is used mostly by productivity people and Office365 power users, who I think would be better served by a more affordable Surface Laptop with a display that could fold around to make a tablet, like all of the other 2-in-1 devices. The tablet mode in this form factor compromises the whole experience and limits the usefulness of the discreet graphics chip, not to mention the compromised 15w processor required to make it work as both a notebook and a tablet. I can see the promise in Microsoft's computer line, but at this point the Surface Book still seems like more of a working concept rather than a finished product.

Many people don't understand why Microsoft had to make it detachable instead of flipping it behind,
The reason being it simply feels "weird" touching a bunch of keyboard keys while holding it, if it is a flip behind design.
Thinkpads even has one laptop try to solve this problem by sinking the keyboard keys a little into the body when flip over.
So if you buy this, make sure you fully utilities the detach function if not there are better, cheaper option out there.

Great video, I am going to change my MBP 13" from 2014 and I am torn, but think I am going to move away from Apple and to Windows. I am intrigued by the Razer Blade Stealth 13" which is more aligned to gamers (I am not a gamer) but I do need a powerful machine for on the road, demos, video recordings ... PowerPoints... but this was also another recommendation. Your review here is pointing me to the Razer product.

@@titaniumleaf I did, I went with the Razer Blade Stealth 13" 4K 2020 model. Obviously I have not been travelling too much with the current situation but I have spent a few days just using that as my machine for the day and it has been great. I use Camtasia to cut video demos and it was a good experience and everything was good. It has the tiny footprint I wanted and the spec to deal with my daily tasks, the only issues are 1. fingerprint magnet on the black version and 2. the price. It is a hefty price tag but I think it was worth it and the spec is still better than anything close from a MacBook Pro 13" perspective.

The SB3 is by no means a gaming laptop though it can do some games ok but dang I love my SB3. I had an SB2 but it unfortunately wore my cup of tea one morning so insurance replaced with an SB3 and I paid to upgrade from 512gb to 1tb SSD which will pay for itself in being able to store more virtual machine tennants for playing and scamming scammers etc later. It was around $4700AUD and whilst it would not be recommendable to your everyday Joe ... I BLOODY LOVE IT!!!
The keyboard with my big chunky hands is awesome!! The 15" display is clear and brilliant!! (13" is usseless to me with my hand size and eyesight) ... I've not come across any power issues yet with it. It took a whilst to adapt to home and end etc being doubled up in the function keys but it's brilliant for typing, drawing and ESPECIALLY writing and signing PDF documents!! I have troubles adapting to a lot of keyboards but this one felt very natural. THE only thing I missed is a numberpad which I can at times use very heavily but that was sorted by buying a bluetooth side cart style numberpad so spreadsheets are good again.
As for OneNote .... lovely program once you get used to it. I was forced/heaved over from having a heap of "notes" in Outlook up to 2010 version then they started removing the notes function which at the time pissed me off A LOT. But the integration with OneNote into everything is now there and it's like a bloody big database of informaiton that we can share across desktops, laptops, tablets and phones with ease. The wife and myself have our home stuff in one that includes our doctor list of things to talk to doc about, the shopping list, current projects we're working on, notes from when we contact the electricity mob and other utilities, info on my grog brewing and the batches done, info on my radios, a full log on our animals and so so much more. Ours is hosted in OneDrive For Business as it was cheaper to pay Microsoft to host our Exchange server than it was for the electricity to run our own SBS server as we'd done for MANY years so it all just fell into place. Imagine my suprise when they said a year or two ago they were going to discontinue it in leau of the crappy watered down Windows Store version.... apparently everyone made a fuss as they re-nigged and kept releasing it (thank you whichever deity). The passworded tabs option is great for family notebooks we can share with the kids that don't have private info in them but will have some things we want to keep from them .. they can share the notebook without accessing info we want to keep from them. With it's interaction with inking/pens it is an awesome program ... I can take it out the back yard and take notes of our garden stuff or when working on our camping stuff like I'm trying to work on a 12v solar powered system for it, just walk out the back with the screen and pen leaving the rest behind and just start drawing or writing ... it's brilliant.
