  • How much weight do you save going from Ultegra derailleurs to Dura Ace, and what would be the cost per saved gram? is it worth it?
    Shimano Front derailleurs
    Ultegra FD-R8150
    Dura Ace FD-R9250
    Shimano Rear derailleurs
    Ultegra RD-R8150
    Dura Ace RD-R9250
    * Cost / Gram:
Quick note about the "Cost/Gram", that's in the scenario of upgrading an existing Ultegra setup to Dura Ace, hence the full price divided by the saved amount of grams.
Prices are US street price as of Feb 24 2024. In this case price is from Competitive cyclist (No affiliation).
Hint: Never by Shimano at RRP price!

US prices (higher) currently are detached from EU prices (way lower), mind you. Also, as of writing, we have two shipping crises and currently deliveries are delayed by two to three weeks, upping prices slightly more in EU and US.

It would be nice to see the price difference per gram saved. For people who want to know if it is worth buying the Dura Ace stuff when building a new bike.

@slayerofgrams probably it'd be a good idea to create video based on cost / gram. Like this $17 / g is really high versus inner tubes / TL for example. I think that'd take millions of views ;)

Here’s a fun one. Take a full Ultegra groupset and see what can be modded to make it close to DA. Change small parts/cage, and also swapping to DA cassette is allowed, rotors can be swapped to any 3rd party

Suggest to also weigh the derailleur cages separately. Most of the RD weight in Ultegra is there. Can always buy the inexpensive carbon DA cage separately. Save weight and $.

Great stuff, so many products whose weight is unknown and/or inaccurate! I started doing this as well. I put a link to your channel in my description. I hope that’s OK.

I have come to the conclusion that 9200 just isn’t worth it over 8100, because of the cost for weight weight (sure black is better though). If you wanted to go light, you should stick with 9170, it weighs less, so save the money with 8100. Even if you didn’t use the crankset, 9200 is going to weigh a little more than 9170. Gear range is really all you get for the upgrade. I have not upgraded, but it would be nice to have 52/36 11-34 and a 8100. I generally have a 53/39 11-30, but can swap to the 50/34 and cheat with a larger cassette for the course. Now that 11 speed cassette weight penalty could negate the 9170 weight savings though. I have an xdr free hub and a xx1 10-42 for ultimate challenges though. That bling isn’t much of a penalty for its size.

There was a time when Dura-Ace actually performed better than Ultegra; it had stiffer, more positive shifting that "clacked" into place, not unlike Campagnolo. But no more; now the only appreciable difference between the two groups is weight, and the only athletes for whom saving a few hundred grams makes a difference are the very best World Tour pros who've optimized every other possible factor. For everyone else, it's just the desire to have the best, and that's okay if you can afford it (I have DA 9100 mechanical on one of my bikes), but it's not necessary, and there are more effective ways to spend your money (like on better wheels and tires).

I had 9000 then 9100 and as parts wore out I've been using 8070 with red cranks and tbh the difference in performance isnt there its the same. I put an aftermarket carbon cage on the 8050 rd and the weight is al oat that of the 9150 i had. I like value for money nowadays and i just cant see it in current dura ace

You should re-weight the tires of a previous episode and add on two tire levers , sealant , tubeless valves , and tubeless repair tool with noodles then weight a clincher tire and tpu inner tube and see who comes out victorious 🤷
