Love both the '65 and the '68 Mustang. My first car, '65 Mustang GT 289 4V 225hp I bought in 1973 for $500. Drove it through high school into college, where I rebuilt the engine and installed a Melling "3/4" cam in it. I remember the Autolite 4100 very well, I think before it was over with I had drilled out every hole in it lol. Totaled the '65, bought a Brittany blue '67 coupe with a six in it and swapped over the 289 out of my '65. Added A/FX headers I got from JC Penney ($75) with a 3:50 rear gear and set out to terrorize my neighborhood lol! Always loved the 289 engine, I still know it mostly by heart, and I'm now 68yrs old. But it was fun times in the 70's, I miss those days. Seeing this car running 11's just blows my mind!
Hello Evan this was so neat to see you and Bobby together and showing the tear down of the engine i always heard about the class engine tear down but have never actually saw one in all my years at the track and I'm in my later 60s , so thank you for bringing us along on this adventure, you and Bobby always do a great job with your videos and what you bring to the race game so thank you both i for one appreciate all you do
Thanks for showing how the car sounded at the end. I was wondering since you can play with cam duration but not lift that it would be pretty unique sounding
Should be a 1.08 4100 Autolite. My Dad raced a '65 210 horsepower 289 powered Mustang from 1971 to 1973 in PDA Super Stock. Then in '74 and '75 ran a '66 Comet with the same basic combination. Years ago a fairly prominent Super Stock racer wanted the rare 1.19 that I had. Not sure how he would have gotten that past tech, pretty significant differences between the two carburetors.
I would respectfully disagree, here's why: when I ran the 1988 5.0 H.O. combo my engine make 280 RWHP, 325 crank hp on a Dyno and ran 11.60 at 112 mph at 3,000 lbs. My Cobra combo make 400 RWHP and 440 crank and ran 10.65/123 mph at 3,000 lbs. Mind you, I have a very efficient drivetrain. No way the 289 is making 390 hp.
I know a Stock racer who told NHRA to F off and got a suspension. lolol He was running 1.5 seconds under the index. What does NHRA pay you for your trouble when you are found to be legal?
Why did this take so long couldn't they have done this a little bit faster if they were just more equipped to do so, and why were they so concerned about the piston ring when they got a number on the Piston to look at, I think they should have been more efficient on their measuring and faster at it than what they were but thank you Evan for the video and thank you Bobby I really do like your car looks good and fast thank you again for the video
Either self-inflicted when setting a record or for tech verification. Stock and Super Stocker racers understand that they can be asked to teardown so most of them come prepared. I always had the "Teardown go bag" ready with everything I needed including gaskets, tools, towels, a table, etc. Thanks for watching and for the question. In most cases there's ample time to assemble it before eliminations.
These days, where easy 9-second power is accessible to anyone with a credit card, the dedication of guys like this is all the more impressive to me.
We need people like this to secure our election results.
Lol. I was wondering what this meant....- until he started listing everything they check. I had no idea they tore them down that extensively. 😮

Imagine if we worked that hard securing the southern border!
Very interesting.
Thanks for sharing the process.
I always liked the Stock and Super Stock Classes.
Have a good evening. 👍🇺🇸👍
Nice car looks good those 289 Engines are suprising👍👍

Thank you Terry.
Wow, great video , i heard about the teardowns never saw one, very impressive !
Fascinating to see the tech procedures. Thats some serious dedication! Seeing the Fords/ Mustang at the track makes it more special!
Great episode, having raced a similar combination in the early days of Super Stock I am impressed with the performance..
That's a great video. Thanks for showing the process.
Very interesting to see this process, these guys work incredibly hard for every single horsepower
Been through this a number of times. Great video!!
Nice ! A nice look at the NHRA tear down. Good info.
Omg y'all set a record with this?! Very cool setup and story on the car / owner / driver.
lot of work good job by the techs..
Awesome video great content👍
Another great vid Evan!! 👍🏁🏁👍
Too much work for the money to be made. Thanks guys.
Thanks for watching, but this isn't about making money, it's about the passion for going fast within the guidelines.
You'll never make money racing anything
Awesome!!
Amazing what they can do with stock heads.
Curt is a great guy.
Rules have gotten more liberal since I've gone through this! What a great feeling though, making it through with no issues.
Thanks for showing how the car sounded at the end. I was wondering since you can play with cam duration but not lift that it would be pretty unique sounding
Went through a tear down.Watch for myself. The boulder never ran right after that

I got ran out of the tear down barn in Indy one year. I got to close I guess. 😅
I loved when someone protested me or I set a National Record and had to go to the barn for tear-down.
2815 POUNDS 11.7 ET MEANS 390 HP AT THE CRANK

@@revanevan , was Bobby protested or did he set a class record?
@@hk45c62that’s what I was wondering, but thought I must’ve missed it in the video. Who pays for the non-reusable parts?
Hey Even, I’m wondering what brought on the tear down? Thanks for your always informative content!
I still have a 4BBL intake from a '66 289
Man that would suck. Who supplies the gaskets for a tear down ?
Car owner.
Simple question. Do you have to bring your own tools to the tear down ?
Yes, all NHRA does is inspect, owner/ driver is responsible for doing all the work and supplying tools and parts.
Why all the secrecy around HP? If you know weight and e.t. it’s easy to figure out!
I know a Stock racer who told NHRA to F off and got a suspension. lolol He was running 1.5 seconds under the index. What does NHRA pay you for your trouble when you are found to be legal?
I would be irate! So every time your car runs a little better than it should, it's a tear down n check? Madness..

Owner/driver
I got 289 in my Ford F 150 I need some help with mine I need few parts
Wow, not much "stock" left in Stock Eliminator :(
What's the guy working on the head looks pretty Sharp
Question... Who pays for the tear down??? And if your in the wrong. What happens???
Can’t believe the year is almost over….
Been over here for a month
Reason for the teardown? That would screw up the whole weekend in my opinion.

why the tear down?
What size front wheel and tire combo ?
What is the reason for a forced NHRA teardown?
To keep the playing field fair or when a racers sets a national record.
@revanevan Thanks for the reply. As your channel grows, replies are more difficult for you. Appreciate.
Do they pay for the gaskets and everything to put it back together and do the work for nothing
I'd be extremely nervous if my car was being tore down by anyone!
It makes 271 hp lol
Makes closer to 330
factory 225 on this one. Not the hi po 271
