Love both the '65 and the '68 Mustang. My first car, '65 Mustang GT 289 4V 225hp I bought in 1973 for $500. Drove it through high school into college, where I rebuilt the engine and installed a Melling "3/4" cam in it. I remember the Autolite 4100 very well, I think before it was over with I had drilled out every hole in it lol. Totaled the '65, bought a Brittany blue '67 coupe with a six in it and swapped over the 289 out of my '65. Added A/FX headers I got from JC Penney ($75) with a 3:50 rear gear and set out to terrorize my neighborhood lol! Always loved the 289 engine, I still know it mostly by heart, and I'm now 68yrs old. But it was fun times in the 70's, I miss those days. Seeing this car running 11's just blows my mind!
Hello Evan this was so neat to see you and Bobby together and showing the tear down of the engine i always heard about the class engine tear down but have never actually saw one in all my years at the track and I'm in my later 60s , so thank you for bringing us along on this adventure, you and Bobby always do a great job with your videos and what you bring to the race game so thank you both i for one appreciate all you do
Very interesting to see the whole process. Love watching this beautiful 60 years old Mustang still racing and setting records. The '68 looks amazing, we can't wait!
That 289 is setup right. Stock 289 HP heads, small valves, shifting at 6200. That takes so much patience. Like you and your project stocker. Getting that performance the engine has to have a great VE.
Should be a 1.08 4100 Autolite. My Dad raced a '65 210 horsepower 289 powered Mustang from 1971 to 1973 in PDA Super Stock. Then in '74 and '75 ran a '66 Comet with the same basic combination. Years ago a fairly prominent Super Stock racer wanted the rare 1.19 that I had. Not sure how he would have gotten that past tech, pretty significant differences between the two carburetors.
Thanks for showing how the car sounded at the end. I was wondering since you can play with cam duration but not lift that it would be pretty unique sounding
They stopped making the 289 a the 283 back in the day because they lasted to long ! I had both got over 250 miles on one n 300 on the other ! No oil burning
Anyone else catch the beehive springs and reduced diameter retainers? There is some high RPM resistance to valve float right there with the small factory valves.
It is a youtube travesty that this channel only has 50k subs. Hes literally one of the best racing channels on YT and content is Tier 1. Not to mention hes been making videos for along time which makes it even worse. We need to start liking and commenting on everything to help him out. The algorithm definitely isnt
man my 271 or my 306 289s never sounded like that and they were not close to 11s my 306 ran a 14.40 and my 271 was faster using a autolite carb off a 390 fe engine my pistons were trw L2218f i dont remember much more then that i ran a 338 rear gear on a 9" rear mini slicks i think a ran a 280 isky cam 4spd BUT i really enjoyed watching the video by the way the 289 is the only engine under 300 cubs with a 4"bore looing forward to youre next video
I would respectfully disagree, here's why: when I ran the 1988 5.0 H.O. combo my engine make 280 RWHP, 325 crank hp on a Dyno and ran 11.60 at 112 mph at 3,000 lbs. My Cobra combo make 400 RWHP and 440 crank and ran 10.65/123 mph at 3,000 lbs. Mind you, I have a very efficient drivetrain. No way the 289 is making 390 hp.
There's a 66 stock eliminator Chevelle with a 283 dynoed 375hp at the crank.Huge wheelies running 11.70s @3200 lbs.You stocker guys are supernatural wizards.
The air this day of setting records was awfully hot with brutal headwind. The next day and remaining days of the event were similar to Cecil with cold temps and low humidity, and tailwind!
Was it me or did some of the tech officials in the trailer seem to be on there first day of work. They didn’t seem organized and efficient. Hope he was able to get back to racing or is his weekend over with a teardown?
I know a Stock racer who told NHRA to F off and got a suspension. lolol He was running 1.5 seconds under the index. What does NHRA pay you for your trouble when you are found to be legal?
Why did this take so long couldn't they have done this a little bit faster if they were just more equipped to do so, and why were they so concerned about the piston ring when they got a number on the Piston to look at, I think they should have been more efficient on their measuring and faster at it than what they were but thank you Evan for the video and thank you Bobby I really do like your car looks good and fast thank you again for the video
Who remembers when Smokey Yunick was being torn down by NASCAR and during the tear down Smokey started a fire and during the commotion he swapped the camshaft laying on the table. WHY ???? Because the engine was running in reverse rotation and the camshaft would snitch on him.
Either self-inflicted when setting a record or for tech verification. Stock and Super Stocker racers understand that they can be asked to teardown so most of them come prepared. I always had the "Teardown go bag" ready with everything I needed including gaskets, tools, towels, a table, etc. Thanks for watching and for the question. In most cases there's ample time to assemble it before eliminations.
You don't get cubic inch displacement by "Blue Printing". That's just the specifics and details of all the clearances, specifics like for example if you got an engine that has angle milled heads and unaware...you gonna be pissed so to speak if you find out the hard way CI displacement has absolutely nothing to do with anything but cylinder bore, length of connecting rod and the stroke of the crank. If you can't change rod length, cylinder bore, stroke....ya done on gaining ci displacement. Don't know what dude was talking bout
These days, where easy 9-second power is accessible to anyone with a credit card, the dedication of guys like this is all the more impressive to me.
it sure is
We need people like this to secure our election results.
Lol. I was wondering what this meant....- until he started listing everything they check. I had no idea they tore them down that extensively. 😮

Very interesting.
Thanks for sharing the process.
I always liked the Stock and Super Stock Classes.
Have a good evening. 👍🇺🇸👍
Fascinating to see the tech procedures. Thats some serious dedication! Seeing the Fords/ Mustang at the track makes it more special!
Very interesting to see this process, these guys work incredibly hard for every single horsepower
Nice car looks good those 289 Engines are suprising👍👍
IT S always impressive to see how little you need to go fast 380 lift and stock heads unreal keep the good stuff coming

Great episode, having raced a similar combination in the early days of Super Stock I am impressed with the performance..
Thanks Evan, that was a great insight, I had always wondered how that stuff worked. 👍
Omg y'all set a record with this?! Very cool setup and story on the car / owner / driver.
Wow, great video , i heard about the teardowns never saw one, very impressive !
Been through this a number of times. Great video!!

Went through a tear down.Watch for myself. The boulder never ran right after that
Awesome video great content👍
lot of work good job by the techs..
I loved when someone protested me or I set a National Record and had to go to the barn for tear-down.
This is fascinating to me, i always wanted to know what went on at teardown.
Too much work for the money to be made. Thanks guys.
Thanks for watching, but this isn't about making money, it's about the passion for going fast within the guidelines.

@@PuredirtMike U CANT RUN QUICKER THAN A 13.2 ON A 7 INCH STREET TIRE. THAT IS A FACT ON A STOCK CAR.
Simple question. Do you have to bring your own tools to the tear down ?
Yes, all NHRA does is inspect, owner/ driver is responsible for doing all the work and supplying tools and parts.
Fun to watch the process. Utmost respect. What was the air at Cecil for him to go a .55?? Maple grove was around sea level a majority of the weekend.
The air this day of setting records was awfully hot with brutal headwind. The next day and remaining days of the event were similar to Cecil with cold temps and low humidity, and tailwind!
Man that would suck. Who supplies the gaskets for a tear down ?
Car owner.
Why all the secrecy around HP? If you know weight and e.t. it’s easy to figure out!
Are the NHRA Techs volunteers or do they get a check?
Why are they doing this teardown? Did you set a record, running too fast, or ?
Was it me or did some of the tech officials in the trailer seem to be on there first day of work. They didn’t seem organized and efficient. Hope he was able to get back to racing or is his weekend over with a teardown?
What's the guy working on the head looks pretty Sharp
Hey Even, I’m wondering what brought on the tear down? Thanks for your always informative content!
We decided to set the record so it was voluntary.
Very interesting. Who pays for the teardown?
Owner/driver
I got 289 in my Ford F 150 I need some help with mine I need few parts
Does the racer get any reimbursement for the cost of these tear downs? Gaskets, fluids, etc. And assuming everything was in spec.
Not that I know of. You get to keep your record. Then maybe you can get sponsorship deal from that.
I would be irate! So every time your car runs a little better than it should, it's a tear down n check? Madness..
Can’t believe the year is almost over….
Been over here for a month
Makes damn near 340Hp
Wow, not much "stock" left in Stock Eliminator :(

289 got little vale con pare to chrvy
Question... Who pays for the tear down??? And if your in the wrong. What happens???
Is there a fee for this?
What is the reason for a forced NHRA teardown?
To keep the playing field fair or when a racers sets a national record.
@revanevan Thanks for the reply. As your channel grows, replies are more difficult for you. Appreciate.
why the tear down?
What size stall converter in transmission
8" converter, it stalls to about 5000 RPM
Reason for the teardown? That would screw up the whole weekend in my opinion.
