Yea its tricky on youtube, ive seen some episodes were he looked 40 or 50 and then some where he looked twenty, i was wondering at the time what the release dates were. Sux growing old, life is so short.
I'm 62 years old. When I graduated high school, I bought a 1967 Camaro SS with a Muncie and a 327. I rebuilt the engine, blue printed it, added better headers, bigger carb and intake and a big ass manifold. Loved it! When my grandmother stopped driving, she gave me her 1967 Mustang coup with a 289. I did basically the same stuff to that car as I had done to the Camaro and then gave the car to my younger brother. I hate to say, but that damn Mustang walked away from that Camaro! I swear, my brother told me sometimes he would rev than damn thing to over 7,000 rpms! Those were the good old days......rubber and gasoline, carbs and grease!
Growing up in the 90's would have been very different if I wasn't able to watch Joe Elmore and Stacey David on Saturday and Sunday morning. R.I.P. Joe. Thank you for everything.
I miss that long bowl mullet of Stacy's. Two icons of my life. Same, I would set alarms to get up and watch those guys on TNN . Sad that he is not here but happy that he is where he belongs....there's gonna be a pretty good party up there with all the greats.

RIP Joe. I’m almost 40 and I’m starting to see parts of my childhood slip away. You don’t realize how cool or special some of them are until they are gone. Many a Sunday mornings after my paper route were spent watching this show with my dad. Condolences to his family at home and the network.

Damn, this Crushed me. I grew up, watching Joe. All through Highschool, the Saturday morning afternoon Fridays game, if Wake up super sore and banged up, and there was nothing more exciting than watching Joe put an engine a project together. I'd watching while eating breakfast. Great memories. Wow. May he continue making great rides in Heaven 🕊️🙏🏾🫡🤙🏾
Used to sit with my daughter on Sundays that she wasn't with her bio father, and record Power block when she was. She broke the news to us, as we knew him through SEMA. Wonderful man. Reason my wife and I started our shop with the first disability check after the loss of my legs, was a chat with Joe. Miss him so much, but we'll see each other again. I feel the same way.
R.I.P. Joe! The news of your death put a lump in my throat. Thank you for being a part of my childhood. I'm now grown up with kids and started watching Joe when I was a kid. He really seemed like a genuine, happy sincere guy. I pray he had faith 🙏

I absolutely love these kinds of videos. Rebuilding/rescuing old motors and showing the results. Fantastic work. I am sorry that Joe passed away. His unique voice and character will be missed.

A neighbor came over one day. He brought his mustang. Said car starts good. Oil press is low? So i started it. No oil pressure. I told him the drive rod on the oil pump is broken. Since its broken. I suggested i check the bearings. He said ok. And said, i have a better cam. Can you install it too? I said yes. We will pull engine. He said ok and to Replace the oil pump and drive rod. I said ok. During that time, one of my grand daughters was living with us. So we got it up on ramps and started work. 1st thing, drain oil. I started draining. My 7 qt drain pan was filling up. I grabbed another pan. We found 13 qts of oil We tore the engine down. The main and rod bearings were still in good condition. But he bought a new set. My grand daughter was there helping disassemble the bottom engine. The owner didn't want new rings. Since the car wasn't smoking. But we scrubbed the engine down and got it on the stand. I was the instructor and talked her how to put it together. The heads were not touched. Just cleaning. At the end, she put it together. We installed the engine. We were just about to fire it up for the first time. The owner showed up just in time. Car starts up nice. I set the timing. We let the car warm up and broke in the cam for 15 minutes at 1500 rpms. Then the owner and myself took the first test drive. The new cam pulled very nice and started pulling as the rpms increased. He paid the bill. I gave my grand daughter half of the money we earned. ❤❤
Thats a win! I bought a 5.0 Cobra Mustang from a guy about to stuff a absolutely outrageous cam in a completely stock high mile long block. I checked the cam specs and laughed. Told him you can keep the cam. Would have wiped out the valves even with fly cutting the pistons. I saved it just in time!
@@amemestoanend1958 The two engines have a different background. The 302 started out as a 260 and grew from there. The 305 started out as a small block - a 350 for the most part but shrunk a bit to make a cruising engine, the small v8 for the Camaro - but the high performance was the 350 if you had the extra money for it.
@@rogerrussell9544I’m surprised that the Ford didn’t still beat it despite being as closely matched as possible. The Ford has better bore for valve size and better head design. I would have thought a 305 would need some sort of aftermarket heads to be even.
@@jamessharp9790 true the 302 had the same specs or bigger piston bore than 350 orbigger than a 350 with only shorter rods wich made it rev faster .....but that 305 H.O camaro with 373 rear end would give it a run for its money

I really loved watching anything Joe was on. I remember the first time they worked on something that wasn't a small block of some sort...the Honda Civic project back around 2005-8 and just the amount of honest enthusiasm he had for that was awesome! RIP Joe!
I am in Australia and didnt know Joe Elmore at all as a celebrity, but watching him on this power nation was a delight, he had the coolest voice and a cool style of everything, he wasnt that old, what a shame.. i will miss him even as an Aussie 12,000 miles away... sad news for sure, i hope his family were living well and thank you again. steve in Australia.

Great episode guys, and great tribute. Joe is part of the blame for who I am today. Every weekend me and my dad would sit in the garage watching all the powerblock shows, then we would tear up the garage with tools and flying metal. More than afew projects and obsessions have resulted to this day. Thanks for the memories, RIP Joe.

As a Ford 302 owner, I can say that it's the best of the two and way more expensive to modify. Also, as a former 305 owner, when I was 16, in the 90s, there were very few 305 parts worth buying out of the Summit catalog. However, there were pages for the 302 Mustangs. I was jealous. If you can't beat them, join them. Besides, a Windsor 302 is one of the best sounding engines ever. Arguably the best. IMHO.
I'm confused. All sbc parts are interchangeable. The sbc has always had more parts available than the sbf. I'm 49 and I was constantly going through the jegs and paw magazines looking for parts. Built my first engine in 1989 at 14. Was working as a certified mechanic at 19. I now have 35 years as a master tech and have 2 first place finishes and a 3rd place at Detroit Autorama and your response confuses the hell out of me...
@@oldskool235 Ford 302 = better and more expensive to build. More parts available mid 90s. 305=boat anchor. Cost not a factor bc not much is available. SBCs are generally cheaper to build. Compare cylinder head prices.. SBC=great; 305=turd. My 305 was tpi. You could buy an accel intake, runners one of 2 or 3 chips for the ecu in the mis 90s. Cam choices were very limited bc the ecu wasn't very adaptive, whereas the Ford computer would pretty much adapt to anything. There were, as best as I can remember, only a few head opinions. They were 306 specific bc of the limited bore. You could not blindly interchange heads on a 305 like you could every other SBC. No t so much with the 302. The large bore allowed it to take much better heads. The 305 was created for smog purposes. The 302 was created to kick ass and take names and sound better than anything else in the world. You should remember the Mustang Flownaster sound from the 90s. That sound instantly made me a believer. My 305 sounded decent, but a 302 sings a heavenly tune. Hope that helps.
They just made so many ragged 305s of differing tunes while Ford made one 302 for mustang. You can fit a vortec head or any 1.94 valve on a 305 with no work.
I was incredibly surprised how well the 305 did. They've always been known as boat anchors, and knowing that this one was worn out, up against the 302 that was not worn out and with an aftermarket intake manifold, I didn't expect it to be as close as it was stock for stock
305's - Great for Turbo or Supercharge engines IMO. They have their place. Seems to me the 302 has a better chance because of larger cylinders and better breathing heads.
They were considered boat anchors because it’s the same size and performance parts as a 350, so why bother? 350 core is cheap so swap and modify 350 and ditch the 305.
@@Dingleberry1856 Yu give the same clueless ignorant arguement, only your opinion, not fact. Their are Race Classes that require a 305. Those blocks are available Aftermarket, and the complete engines cost upwards of $10,000. I guess you buy 350 cores on a regular basis? If you did you would know they are no longer inexpensive. A stock 305 is a boat anchor, so is a stock 350. Even a bone stock 400 with short rods is weak. Modifying makes all the difference.
@Roxx______________ you are so ignorant. We are not talking race engines. EVERYONE in my area bought a 350 through parts at it then swapped out the 305. There was no point keeping the 305. You could pick up a 350 from a junkyard for $100
Watching Joe, Stacey and the other hosts every Saturday morning as a kid is what got me into cars. Now I'm in my 40's and I enjoy being able to turn wrenches for fun and for a paycheck. I don't know what I would be doing now if I hadn't had Joe and the crew to teach me about cars at a young age. Thanks Joe for being the ignition coil that sent a spark through the wires of TV to light off the spark plug in my mind and heart. You'll be missed. But at least we can still watch old shows and clips on the internet. I guess technology isn't all bad after all

Find a set of 305 Vortec heads. Look up the casting numbers to make sure they are Vortec heads. Should be years 1995ish to 1999. They are hard to find. You may have to buy a whole engine to get a set. Match that with the correct Edelbrock or Holley Vortec manifold, then select the same cam as this test. It will make the 305 run great.
The fact that they got that power out of 2 engines with emissions choked compression ratios and mostly stock internals says a lot about how much late 60’s early 70’s manufacturers were lying about the numbers on their engines lol.
1st time on your channel - I subscribed! My first car was a 1967 Camaro 350+ HP modified with racing cam, roller lifters, 12 inch Lakewood bell housing, Mickey Thomson rear 12" tires, 4 speed manual transmission, inline 4 shift racing stick shift, racing boat engine that came from a wrecked 1966 Corvette, LT1 i think. Got 7 miles to the gallon when you wanted to go, but got you there quick. Got 20 mpg at 1300 rpm in 4th gear when cruising at 65 mph on the highway because of the high speed interceptor rearend out of a State Patrol car. I bought this car while in college at ECU for $1200 from a guy in Hollywood NC during November1977. This car taught me everything about how to drive and fix cars!!! I learned how to fix cars! This was the only way to get around and I was ready. This was the first car to teach me to me a mechanic. I have never let anyone touch my cars since. 😁
My 1981 Malibu with 2:94 gears and 26" tires has a 350 with Edelbrock performer cam intake and carb, turbo 350, now not fast but 14.01 at 93 mph getting 25 mpg, is impressive for a cruiser in my book

One week after getting my driver's license - I torn the entire passenger side off the car when I side swiped a tree (8 feet behind a chain link fence. ) One year later, one week before going to ECU college in 1975 - took the driver's side off the car when I side swiped a TELEPHONE pole. All the lights on the street and my car went out! I asked my passenger Tommy: "Are we DEAD? Is this what death feels like?" It was totally black everywhere. Tommy said: "I have no idea!!! Just keep driving. LOL.

I actually second this idea, I think it would be cool to see how they would each respond to good factory iron heads, then maybe step up to some RPM heads for both with the same cams/intake manifolds.
I loved watch Joe on Horsepower and Stacey on Trucks. Lot of good memories sitting on my couch as a young teenager watching them build awesome vehicles.
At 16 years old, i bought my first car, which was a 1978 Chevy Nova with the 305. Not big on horsepower, but man, it was reliable with regular maintenance. I think about that old car every now and then and all the fun i had in it. It was in excellent condition for a 16 year old car back then. With a new radiator, starter, alternator, and carb rebuild, i was off. I learned alot about cars with that one. It's really a shame they dont make them like that anymore.
We are 1st car brothers. I also got a 78 nova with a 305 at 16. was a great car until the oil sending unit cracked on a 25 mile drive home. Never smoked and didn't notice all the oil leaking out. It was knocking by the time I got home. Sad but I learned so much drooping my first 350 in. Oh and I actually spray painted the entire car blue and it wasn't terrible. lol
I will perfer the Ford simply because they staggar the valves. Unlike Chevy who puts exhaust valves next to each other in the middle of the head which causes hot spots head gasket faliures and cracking.
The standard ford 302 dous not have canted valve heads. Only the 302 Boss wich was a very special & rare engine. Also the 351 Clevlands heads was canted valve heads. Wich is what was on the 302 Boss. But the standard 302/5.0 did not have those heads.
Chevy learned from their mistakes & built the LS👍. Ford went full tilt & built unreliable OHC engines👎, then Ford learned from that mistake & built the 7.3 Godzilla👍.

The Chevy had a few wiped cam lobes. It was basically a broken engine. -But it ran! I wonder how many project car engines could go from poor to at least average, just by being stock rebuilt? You'd have to do it yourself, but a true gear head should tear down at least one engine in their life (I did a 50cc moped as a teen, that counts!) :D

When I was growing up watching this on TV, Joe's voice was always something that stood out if I was in the other room. As soon as I heard Joe, I'd be glued to the TV for the whole show. Thanks for all the entertainment, Joe, as we pass the wrenches on to these fellows.
The debate will never end. All that Ford needed was the cam and springs. Junkyards are full of roller 302's that will perform like that with 500 bucks worth of parts.
@@member57 both got carb, single plane intake, electronic distributor, wires, coil, timing chain and gears.....and last but not least, valve springs, pushrods, cam, and roller lifters. Both were run with headers in the end too, instead of stock exhaust. Ford roller lifters, even with 200,000 miles, are good to go. Give it a bumpstick and springs only.....pushroods probably will not need changing. So they produced equal power....but the Ford really only needed 500 bucks in parts. That is my point. The title of the show was DOLLAR FOR HORSEPOWER. The debate will never end.
They should have used the 305ho out of the Camaro, it would have been a much closer match to the 302. They used an old smog era 305 for this that probably barely had 8:1 C/R with purely junk heads designed to clean up emissions with a carb. I'm shocked they said it made 200hp as I believe they were only rated at 140 stock.
The Ford 302 heads are crap also, they can barely make 300 fully ported. Trust me, that is an even comparison. The comparison to the Chevy 302 is the Boss 302. But the Boss wins that comparison too

In the mid 80’s, a workmate and myself did these tests I had a ‘79 f100 w/302 - he had a ‘84 C10 w/305. Regularly we would drive long distances to oilwells/ jobsites - get on the 4 lane highways and both of us would pin it for miles and miles and the trucks basically ran neck and neck, if anything the chevy was a little faster
Joe "bowted up" a lot a parts and hearts. RIP. I was surprised and disappointed Stacy didn't say anything that I saw at least. If I'm wrong apologies but Joe was a fixture for decades and an undeniable one. As to your test. It is awesome how you immediately pointed out "similar VE" so few of the modern wrenches know that. A VE improvement is where power hides. A cold air intake to a super 40. I'd love to see this test back with some head replacement. THEN put some stroke in them both. Think there might be a big difference when all that happens.
Ahhh, shit. I didn't know Joe Elmore personally, but he was one of those people whose presence was always a happy part of my life. Always one of my favorite car guys on the tube, he was always one of the very few who made me postpone whatever if I saw him on the screen. I learned much from Joe over the decades and he gave me many hours of fun. Count me among the many who will miss Joe very much. RIP, Joe. Godspeed to you.
They could do a 350 block, 350 5.7" rods, 327 pistons, and a 283 crank with small journal crank spacers. That's a lot of effort compared to grabbing a 305 though. It is a lot of effort and cost to reduce your engine displacement.
Bc they are a bit boring. They are just the same stroke and bore. And if you use simular cylinder heads they will make About the same power. Really this episode is if the "small" bore of the 305 actually limits power potential in any serious extent.

A neighbor came over one day. He brought his mustang.
Said car starts good.
Oil press is low?
So i started it. No oil pressure.
I told him the drive rod on the oil pump is broken.
Since its broken.
I suggested i check the bearings.
He said ok. And said, i have a better cam. Can you install it too?
I said yes. We will pull engine.
He said ok and to
Replace the oil pump and drive rod.
I said ok.
During that time, one of my grand daughters was living with us.
So we got it up on ramps and started work.
1st thing, drain oil.
I started draining. My 7 qt drain pan was filling up. I grabbed another pan. We found 13 qts of oil
We tore the engine down.
The main and rod bearings were still in good condition.
But he bought a new set.
My grand daughter was there helping disassemble the bottom engine.
The owner didn't want new rings. Since the car wasn't smoking.
But we scrubbed the engine down and got it on the stand.
I was the instructor and talked her how to put it together.
The heads were not touched. Just cleaning.
At the end, she put it together.
We installed the engine.
We were just about to fire it up for the first time. The owner showed up just in time.
Car starts up nice. I set the timing.
We let the car warm up and broke in the cam for 15 minutes at 1500 rpms.
Then the owner and myself took the first test drive.
The new cam pulled very nice and started pulling as the rpms increased.
He paid the bill. I gave my grand daughter half of the money we earned.

Thats a win! I bought a 5.0 Cobra Mustang from a guy about to stuff a absolutely outrageous cam in a completely stock high mile long block. I checked the cam specs and laughed. Told him you can keep the cam. Would have wiped out the valves even with fly cutting the pistons. I saved it just in time!

I want to know for sure but I believe the 302 can also rev much higher than a 305.
OK I see they put an HEI gm style distributer in it. I go with a edlebrock carb over holley all engines.
@@amemestoanend1958 The two engines have a different background. The 302 started out as a 260 and grew from there. The 305 started out as a small block - a 350 for the most part but shrunk a bit to make a cruising engine, the small v8 for the Camaro - but the high performance was the 350 if you had the extra money for it.

I really loved watching anything Joe was on. I remember the first time they worked on something that wasn't a small block of some sort...the Honda Civic project back around 2005-8 and just the amount of honest enthusiasm he had for that was awesome! RIP Joe!
I am in Australia and didnt know Joe Elmore at all as a celebrity, but watching him on this power nation was a delight, he had the coolest voice and a cool style of everything, he wasnt that old, what a shame.. i will miss him even as an Aussie 12,000 miles away... sad news for sure, i hope his family were living well and thank you again. steve in Australia.

There's nothing Fair comparing engines when one is a roller cam and the 305 isn't . Roller is always going to make more power straight out of the box.
Great episode guys, and great tribute. Joe is part of the blame for who I am today. Every weekend me and my dad would sit in the garage watching all the powerblock shows, then we would tear up the garage with tools and flying metal. More than afew projects and obsessions have resulted to this day. Thanks for the memories, RIP Joe.

As a Ford 302 owner, I can say that it's the best of the two and way more expensive to modify. Also, as a former 305 owner, when I was 16, in the 90s, there were very few 305 parts worth buying out of the Summit catalog. However, there were pages for the 302 Mustangs. I was jealous. If you can't beat them, join them.
Besides, a Windsor 302 is one of the best sounding engines ever. Arguably the best. IMHO.
289/302/351 all have a big 4 inch bore too which helps with power, junk 305 is useless, everyone builds 350s for a reason.
I'm confused. All sbc parts are interchangeable. The sbc has always had more parts available than the sbf. I'm 49 and I was constantly going through the jegs and paw magazines looking for parts. Built my first engine in 1989 at 14. Was working as a certified mechanic at 19. I now have 35 years as a master tech and have 2 first place finishes and a 3rd place at Detroit Autorama and your response confuses the hell out of me...

305=boat anchor. Cost not a factor bc not much is available. SBCs are generally cheaper to build. Compare cylinder head prices.. SBC=great; 305=turd. My 305 was tpi. You could buy an accel intake, runners one of 2 or 3 chips for the ecu in the mis 90s. Cam choices were very limited bc the ecu wasn't very adaptive, whereas the Ford computer would pretty much adapt to anything. There were, as best as I can remember, only a few head opinions. They were 306 specific bc of the limited bore. You could not blindly interchange heads on a 305 like you could every other SBC. No t so much with the 302. The large bore allowed it to take much better heads. The 305 was created for smog purposes. The 302 was created to kick ass and take names and sound better than anything else in the world. You should remember the Mustang Flownaster sound from the 90s. That sound instantly made me a believer. My 305 sounded decent, but a 302 sings a heavenly tune.

They just made so many ragged 305s of differing tunes while Ford made one 302 for mustang.
You can fit a vortec head or any 1.94 valve on a 305 with no work.

I was incredibly surprised how well the 305 did. They've always been known as boat anchors, and knowing that this one was worn out, up against the 302 that was not worn out and with an aftermarket intake manifold, I didn't expect it to be as close as it was stock for stock
305's - Great for Turbo or Supercharge engines IMO. They have their place. Seems to me the 302 has a better chance because of larger cylinders and better breathing heads.
They were considered boat anchors because it’s the same size and performance parts as a 350, so why bother? 350 core is cheap so swap and modify 350 and ditch the 305.
@@Dingleberry1856 Yu give the same clueless ignorant arguement, only your opinion, not fact. Their are Race Classes that require a 305. Those blocks are available Aftermarket, and the complete engines cost upwards of $10,000. I guess you buy 350 cores on a regular basis? If you did you would know they are no longer inexpensive. A stock 305 is a boat anchor, so is a stock 350. Even a bone stock 400 with short rods is weak. Modifying makes all the difference.
That motor also looked like shit on the inside. I've never in my 20 years of owning engines ever had anything that looked so bad.

Watching Joe, Stacey and the other hosts every Saturday morning as a kid is what got me into cars. Now I'm in my 40's and I enjoy being able to turn wrenches for fun and for a paycheck. I don't know what I would be doing now if I hadn't had Joe and the crew to teach me about cars at a young age.
Thanks Joe for being the ignition coil that sent a spark through the wires of TV to light off the spark plug in my mind and heart. You'll be missed. But at least we can still watch old shows and clips on the internet. I guess technology isn't all bad after all

Man, this video is making me reconsider pulling the 305 out of my 85 SS Monte Carlo. That was a super impressive jump with a couple of bolt on's.
Find a set of 305 Vortec heads. Look up the casting numbers to make sure they are Vortec heads. Should be years 1995ish to 1999. They are hard to find. You may have to buy a whole engine to get a set. Match that with the correct Edelbrock or Holley Vortec manifold, then select the same cam as this test. It will make the 305 run great.
i would do that. if you have a stock 84 block.... put 202 intake heads, 292/475 hyd cam & lifters. 650cfm or FInj. double roller timing chain.

Any small block head with 2.02 valves will not fit on the 305. The bore is too narrow. 1.94 is the maximum diameter.
There is a combo video I watched.. before they blew it up with nitrous, the base NA run was 350 hp out of the 305 with vortec heads
The fact that they got that power out of 2 engines with emissions choked compression ratios and mostly stock internals says a lot about how much late 60’s early 70’s manufacturers were lying about the numbers on their engines lol.

1st time on your channel - I subscribed! My first car was a 1967 Camaro 350+ HP modified with racing cam, roller lifters, 12 inch Lakewood bell housing, Mickey Thomson rear 12" tires, 4 speed manual transmission, inline 4 shift racing stick shift, racing boat engine that came from a wrecked 1966 Corvette, LT1 i think. Got 7 miles to the gallon when you wanted to go, but got you there quick. Got 20 mpg at 1300 rpm in 4th gear when cruising at 65 mph on the highway because of the high speed interceptor rearend out of a State Patrol car.
I bought this car while in college at ECU for $1200 from a guy in Hollywood NC during November1977. This car taught me everything about how to drive and fix cars!!! I learned how to fix cars! This was the only way to get around and I was ready. This was the first car to teach me to me a mechanic. I have never let anyone touch my cars since. 😁
My 1981 Malibu with 2:94 gears and 26" tires has a 350 with Edelbrock performer cam intake and carb, turbo 350, now not fast but 14.01 at 93 mph getting 25 mpg, is impressive for a cruiser in my book

One week after getting my driver's license - I torn the entire passenger side off the car when I side swiped a tree (8 feet behind a chain link fence. ) One year later, one week before going to ECU college in 1975 - took the driver's side off the car when I side swiped a TELEPHONE pole. All the lights on the street and my car went out! I asked my passenger Tommy: "Are we DEAD? Is this what death feels like?" It was totally black everywhere. Tommy said: "I have no idea!!! Just keep driving. LOL.

I actually second this idea, I think it would be cool to see how they would each respond to good factory iron heads, then maybe step up to some RPM heads for both with the same cams/intake manifolds.

At 16 years old, i bought my first car, which was a 1978 Chevy Nova with the 305. Not big on horsepower, but man, it was reliable with regular maintenance. I think about that old car every now and then and all the fun i had in it. It was in excellent condition for a 16 year old car back then. With a new radiator, starter, alternator, and carb rebuild, i was off. I learned alot about cars with that one. It's really a shame they dont make them like that anymore.
We are 1st car brothers. I also got a 78 nova with a 305 at 16. was a great car until the oil sending unit cracked on a 25 mile drive home. Never smoked and didn't notice all the oil leaking out. It was knocking by the time I got home. Sad but I learned so much drooping my first 350 in. Oh and I actually spray painted the entire car blue and it wasn't terrible. lol

I will perfer the Ford simply because they staggar the valves. Unlike Chevy who puts exhaust valves next to each other in the middle of the head which causes hot spots head gasket faliures and cracking.
So simply buy some canted valve heads for the chevy small block. Or go big block chevy then it's a non issue...😂
The standard ford 302 dous not have canted valve heads. Only the 302 Boss wich was a very special & rare engine. Also the 351 Clevlands heads was canted valve heads. Wich is what was on the 302 Boss. But the standard 302/5.0 did not have those heads.
Chevy learned from their mistakes & built the LS👍. Ford went full tilt & built unreliable OHC engines👎, then Ford learned from that mistake & built the 7.3 Godzilla👍.

The roller cam vs non roller does make a huge difference. That's not a fair comparison for baseline.
The Chevy had a few wiped cam lobes. It was basically a broken engine. -But it ran! I wonder how many project car engines could go from poor to at least average, just by being stock rebuilt? You'd have to do it yourself, but a true gear head should tear down at least one engine in their life (I did a 50cc moped as a teen, that counts!) :D
This was a rabbit hole of memories. I was only curious about this comparison and I was reminded of Joe Elmore and Horsepower TV. I watched that and shade tree mechanic growing up every weekend with my dad. Good times, rip Joe

When I was growing up watching this on TV, Joe's voice was always something that stood out if I was in the other room. As soon as I heard Joe, I'd be glued to the TV for the whole show. Thanks for all the entertainment, Joe, as we pass the wrenches on to these fellows.
The debate will never end. All that Ford needed was the cam and springs. Junkyards are full of roller 302's that will perform like that with 500 bucks worth of parts.

@@member57 both got carb, single plane intake, electronic distributor, wires, coil, timing chain and gears.....and last but not least, valve springs, pushrods, cam, and roller lifters. Both were run with headers in the end too, instead of stock exhaust. Ford roller lifters, even with 200,000 miles, are good to go. Give it a bumpstick and springs only.....pushroods probably will not need changing. So they produced equal power....but the Ford really only needed 500 bucks in parts. That is my point. The title of the show was DOLLAR FOR HORSEPOWER. The debate will never end.

It'd be the same shit, 305 has a tiny little econobox bore on it, useless for making power.
They should have used the 305ho out of the Camaro, it would have been a much closer match to the 302. They used an old smog era 305 for this that probably barely had 8:1 C/R with purely junk heads designed to clean up emissions with a carb. I'm shocked they said it made 200hp as I believe they were only rated at 140 stock.
Why not compare a Ford 302 vs Chevy 302. The 305 has a huge disadvantage because of the really crap cylinder heads and small bore.
The Ford 302 heads are crap also, they can barely make 300 fully ported. Trust me, that is an even comparison.
The comparison to the Chevy 302 is the Boss 302. But the Boss wins that comparison too

As far back as the 1970's Ive always had better reliability with Ford Engines.
If you only run fords that’s all you can relate to. That’s the same as saying mac n cheese is my favorite food and it’s the only thing you eat
In the mid 80’s, a workmate and myself did these tests I had a ‘79 f100 w/302 - he had a ‘84 C10 w/305. Regularly we would drive long distances to oilwells/ jobsites - get on the 4 lane highways and both of us would pin it for miles and miles and the trucks basically ran neck and neck, if anything the chevy was a little faster
A little faster was from transmission gearing but the 305 wasn't as reliable
Joe "bowted up" a lot a parts and hearts. RIP. I was surprised and disappointed Stacy didn't say anything that I saw at least. If I'm wrong apologies but Joe was a fixture for decades and an undeniable one.
As to your test. It is awesome how you immediately pointed out "similar VE" so few of the modern wrenches know that. A VE improvement is where power hides. A cold air intake to a super 40. I'd love to see this test back with some head replacement. THEN put some stroke in them both. Think there might be a big difference when all that happens.

Always one of my favorite car guys on the tube, he was always one of the very few who made me postpone whatever if I saw him on the screen. Why not have 302 Chevy vs 302 Ford?
I’d like to see a battle of the 400’s. Dodge, Chevy and Ford
because they only made it for 3 years and they just aren't laying around in junkyards like a 305 is.
They could do a 350 block, 350 5.7" rods, 327 pistons, and a 283 crank with small journal crank spacers. That's a lot of effort compared to grabbing a 305 though. It is a lot of effort and cost to reduce your engine displacement.
The possibilities are endless.
Bc they are a bit boring. They are just the same stroke and bore. And if you use simular cylinder heads they will make About the same power. Really this episode is if the "small" bore of the 305 actually limits power potential in any serious extent.
