However, the whole reason I switched to the 460 was those big canted valves and large ports. I told my Chevy guy friends, “it’s the only bb Ford that comes close in design to that killer bb Chevy that you guys got!” Lunati also has a great 6000+ cam for the Ford, but still it was good to see them both built (except for the cam install... yikes).

Casey West yeah, they can't do that, then the Ford might win, and god knows we can't have that. They did a "budget build-off" between an ls3 and a coyote- got all kinds of aftermarket parts for the ls- bigger cam, higher compression pistons, etc, when for the coyote they took out the mustang's forged crank and replaced it with a cast crank from a truck block, swapped out the mustang cams and swapped them for the truck cams and then called the ls the winner. They literally built the coyote to make less hp than it did stock out of the mustang it originally came out of. Wtf kind of joke is that, you call that an equal comparison? Give me a fkn break. Build a 454 and a 460 with evenly matched parts and do the same with an ls3 and a coyote and see what happens (btw I'm not a Ford guy, but if you're going to do a comparison between built motors, build them similarly so we can see what is actually capable of what).

At a local car show, years ago, there was a GM guy running his mouth about how the "tree fitty" chevy engine was the best thing ever created by man, and how the 302 Ford sucked. I happened to have my little Mustang II there, with a temperary 302 in it, that I had thrown together using some mix matched parts I'd had laying around. I cut the valve reliefs in some shitty badger pistons using an old valve that I'd cut a slot in, and brazed a cutting edge into, then used a hand drill with it to "machine" the reliefs. lol I didn't balance anything, I just threw it together with some new bearings, polished the journals with cloth, etc. CC solid lifter cam, 351W ported heads, performer intake, 600 holley, done. I lovingly referred to it as my grenade engine, and I would frequently tach it to 7500 rpm on a daily basis.
So I told the guy at the show, let's get in our cars, put it in neutral, and hold the tach at 7500 for 2 mins and see if they hold together. He said no fuckin way would I do that. So I got in my car and did it anyway, smiling at him the whole time. After 2 mins, I let it idle again, the motor was fine, still had 60 psi oil pressure, no issues. The Chevy guy had nothing to say, he just turned and walked off. Stock rods, crank, shitty hand cut pistons, etc, lol and it worked great. I ended up running that grenade 302 for 3 years until I got around to building the new race engine for it. I would challenge anyone with a stock 2-bolt 350 shortblock to give it a shot and see how it holds together at 7500 in neutral for 2 minutes. lol

FYI. DO NOT install a high volume oil pump on your 460!!! They tell you to do that but DO NOT! Its great for street driving but when you are racing and get to the end of the track hitting 8k rpm you WILL get too much oil in the top of the engine and you will damage things. Also, MAKE SURE you have at least 2 lines coming out of your fuel regulator because when you get to the end of the track you will run lean. My grandpa is a master tech and a pro racer for 55+ years and he still made those mistakes that hosted him a new 460 but he liked replacing it with a 526 stroker anyway.

I'll be 70 in August, and only went through auto shop in high school. I did end up overhauling my high school car, a 54' Chevy with a 235 six cylinder after I had graduated. Added a home, butchered up, split exhaust with an Offenhauser, which changed it to a 2 carburetor setup. Eventually bought a used 70', 428 Cobra Jet, Mustang, that broke an intake valve, which totally destroyed the motor. I had to swap that out with a used 390, which allowed me to save money by reusing some of the 428 parts. I eventually got a 76' Pinto which needed an overhaul, the cam was wore out. That engine was the most fun to work on, and turned out great. The last was my 79' F150 with an automatic. What I liked about all of those engines, they had carburetors and distributors. They were just more fun to work with and easier for me. Thanks for keeping that type of engine alive.

Long ago, early, 80's, I bought a brand new ford pickup. Short bed, step side with 6cyl for the sole purpose of installing a big block ford engine.
Went to a junk yard for fords in east Texas, picked up a motor. 1968 T-bird donated the 429. Built the motor, balanced, Isky cam, pistons etc.. Built the transmission (C6 was stock in the truck). You can imagine how that light, short bed pickup ran with that motor in it. The best thing is.. it sounded so darned good. It was stolen a few years later, after I had moved to Houston.
