They are three valve engines. The third valve is called the MCA-Jet valve. They tend to stick open and are commonly eliminated with a kit. I had to replace the valve seals on mine and installed the jet valve elimination kit to make it a 2 valve. I just searched and the kits are still readily available. Just look for 2.6 Jet valve elimination kits.

About 25yrs ago a friend had a machine shop and made a lot of money repairing Mitsubishi heads from the 80s and 90s. A few years later he said it was getting really hard to find heads to rebuild. They all have their issues: leaking head gaskets, valve seal leaks, dropped valves, dropped valve guides, go through timing belts, they eat timing belts faster than they should, you name it. The big one though is that there's not enough meat in-between the valves on these.2 valve hemi engines, they often crack there. Not having enough metal there also means it's, incredibly difficult to repair, and will probably crack again if it is repaired. Long story shortened... It appears there are better heads for these in the aftermarket now for cheap. I would check the casting on it, and replace it with one of those if it's an original. It's probably worth something. Being as clean as it is, it's probably already been replaced though...
They had a dark blue one at the car dealership I worked at when I was about 18/19 yrs old(1998/99)....It sat in the back, not even for sale when I worked there...I obsessed over that car... wanted it so bad
In the mid-late 80s, while stationed at NAF El Centro, CA, my dear friend had one of these and we'd drive around Southern California (El Centro to Glendora Mtn). Fantastic car! He never would let me drive (can't say I blame him) but, hope sprang eternal... Now that I can afford far more expensive cars, wisdom dictates THAT to be a pointless pursuit (kids, grandkids, etc.). I had one of these. The Starion. A driver's car that was born on the race track. Unadjustable front suspension. If you tweak it it's done, got to replace it. The thing corners like a beast! And an awesome Mitsubishi stereo. Nice little car.
Regarding the buckle in the tail lamp/rear quarter. It should be flat, I referenced many online photos, its not a factory dent, but I appreciate your optimism, & its still a very nice car. My guess is the car was backed into a garage shelf or something, where it hit just above the tail lamp, just hard enough to buckle that area locally. You can see a little witness dent in the yellow reflections in that area.
He looks like a buckle from a human being falling into it by falling off a ladder. You can clearly see in the reflection there's a dimple where it got pushed in on the back side above the tail light
I had a 87 Mitsubishi starion tsi in white with dark red leather. That was a sweet ride. Same car is this. I found a hood off an 83 that had the scoop. man i miss that car.
In 1986 i bought an 83 dodge challenger 4cyl 5 speed. Took it Hanau Germany. Top speed was 105 mph. I bought the brother to it the Mitsubishi Sapporo. The Sapporo had slight differences that bolted on to the U.S. version. Fun cars.
A future where you Need a bicycle to back up your car?? This model of car is junk one of my buddies own two different ones years ago and it not only practically bankrupted him it ruined his marriage. Yeah I don't envy the new owner of this car... they'll find out!
I had one. Common issues were blown head gasket and turbos seal leaks. I upgraded to cometic head gasket and ball bearing turbo, full exhaust and larger downpipe. Also added a bov and varible boost controller
Those issues never go away no matter what you replace no matter how many times no matter what kind of aftermarket part it is.. you'll find out! That's why 95% of the VERY few of these cars you still see, no longer even have a Mitsubishi drivetrain in them. (It's fairly popular to drop a small block small displacement chevy or ford V8 in this car) from the testimonies of those who replaced the drivetrain they saved money over those who try to fix the original drivetrain.
A quick google image search of other conquests shows the rear quarter panel should not have that crease and should be smooth. Still doesn't explain what happened but proves it didn't come from the factory like that
These have always been one of the top 5 I’d like to own…. As a kid I looked for them to check out finally there was one at the dealership it was over 40k plus TTT. Last year available heck of a markup or no that was a lot back then. Couldn’t even test drive it.
I had a red 89 Conquest TSI with a black interior and a removable sunroof. That car was fun! It handled great, to me, but it really needed another 50-100 hp.
@@Junkyard_DaveIt may have been lower, but the sunroof just popped up at the back or could be taken out and put in a bag in the back like the freedom tops in a Jeep wrangler.
Hey Dave nice purchase. Loved these things when they came in for service at the dealer they do have a low compression readings compared to todays engines these have hydraulic lifters and if they get left to sit they drain out and when you crank them over they fill with oil and occasionally they will pump up and hold a valve open we got these and it’s cousin the sigma with a 2ltr and a garret t03 turbo with a draw through remote carb no injection build it back to original spec good clean examples are getting hard to find even here in Australia looking forward to see this get done👍
I sold new cars at a Chryler / Nissan dealership when those were new . We only had 1 of em and it was completley overlooked next to all the Nissan 300 ZX's . We were all amazed by it and we all looked at it and told people that it was a concept car that actually went into production . To make it look even stranger we had it parked near used red Isuzu I Mark that had red & green plastic wheel covers on it . I was there for about a year and I don't think anyone ever sold it . I did sell the Isuzu though .
I didn't see you lube the cylinders before turning it over. If its been sitting for a long time those cylinders will be dry and could score. Also that could explain low compression.
I concur. Always look for YTbers who get really old cars that sat for years to use Fogging Oil or even a few drops of oil down in the cylinders so it isn't dry starting and screwing more stuff up.
Look at the corner above the tail light, looks like an impact on the corner from backing into something or a slight bump up from the rear, tail light lens may have been replaced and some touch paint on the impact and buckle crack
This engine is a Mitsubishi Forklift engine. You can find parts for these in the industrial sector. My son just worked on the Dodge version. That is where he found the parts. Good luck with this cream puff.
I have an 89 Conquest. Still original paint. 77k. Paid $250. Said it wouldn’t start. Was the fuel pump. Sold the original engine/trans. 4g63 swapped it. Still has AC, PS.
I laughed when I read the title. I've owned seven starquest and it took all seven to keep one running. Bad injectors ..cracked heads do to jet valves...exhaust man
That buckle looks like it could have been done by an old school tow truck with the sling. If it was towed from the rear with the front wheels put on tow dolly the stress put on the rear of the car body can be pretty bad on the weaker body parts, which in your car is around the tail light.
The MCA jet would just snap off sometimes and when it did, it would suck oil out of the valvetrain area making you think the turbo shaft seal or a piston ring had broken. The valve wasn't hard to replace. Or you could just get the kit and eliminate them.
I’ve had two of these and I love them. But there’s a reason why it hasn’t ran in ten years. Let’s hope it never overheated. Because if it did you might as well do a head gasket and there’s no cracks
She’s minty fresh Dave. Those engines could take a beating. Ask me how I know. A wet compression test might give you a better sense on compression. I suspect the rings need to come back to life. Or the old Italian tune up!!! Ours had a factory leather interior. So keep an eye out for one of those. 👏👏👏🙌
Opening the throttlebody while doing a compression test will certainly help if the car is turning at a normal speed. You had a very very weak/slow crank over… Which you know cause you mentioned it.
Being in Australia the Mitsubishi starion is one I so want And especially what you have Dave is a late model with wide body a five stud wheels That’s a peach and $1200 wow Last time I seen one for sale here it was $18000 and is an early model
Car is a great survivor, just enjoy it! Is it possible that the quarter panel was replaced? Perhaps it's a bad seam. If its not aluminum, may be able to check w/ a magnet. Hopefully I'm wrong.
It looks like the buckle extends down a bit to behind the taillight bucket area. My guess is the whole top of the taillight bucket it pushed back just a hair.
The compression ratio from factory is VERY low at 7:1, which is crazy. The compression check numbers should be between 120-130 psi for a healthy engine. The engines are also 8 valve, SOHC. The engine is the G54B, derived from the Mitsubishi Mighty Max truck. My father bought a brand new black Conquest TSi back in 1988, I fell in love with it. A few years later he bought a red 87 1/2 Starion. A few years later I bought my first red 1987 Conquest TSi. It had a lot of issues and I picked it up for $1000. The back of the head gasket leaked oil to the ground. I rebuilt the head, new exhaust manifold (old was cracked), new turbo, clutch, etc. After all that work, the head gasket still leaked in that area. I cranked the torque of the head bolts down a little more past factory spec, and the leak stopped. I daily drove it for about 2 years and loved it. The technology of the engine is pretty low though. This would be a perfect candidate to do a 4G63 swap, or even a K20 Honda turbo swap. Love the rare factory yellow cars!
That buckle was created when the car backed into a workbench while trying to park in a two-car garage. The kind with one door. The garage was perpendicular to the driveway. There was a morning dove singing Taylor Swift at the time (weEEE are never ever ever) and the smell of apple pie was in the air.
And look for the cylinder that is clean that’s the one with issues as when head gaskets blow the cylinder is really clean and a trick before you take a running motor out dump a cup with water down the carb while running it half throttle and poor, it’ll clean out a lot of carbon save you time cleaning
Looks like the buckle was caused by it being lowered off jacks onto something under under the rear bumper. This impinged the bumper and transferred the force through the tail light and into the rear fender. Probably lowered the car down onto a cardboard box full of books or something.
It definitely looks to me like the post up in the corner where the jack rests was tweaked and causing the problem. Surprised he didn’t see that when he was editing the video
I'm betting the "buckle" damage is from a low speed parking lot accident. A pickup truck with the tailgate down may have hit it when backing up or something like that. Either way, doesn't look anything more than cosmetic.
Last video I kept saying "HOW?! SCRAP?!". Since then I've seen many RUclips Shorts of just how many people out there don't even know how to change a tire, let alone know their car has one in it... I would call this car "Lemon Maringoo".
I was one that suggested maybe something in the trunk area had done the damage from inside . I guess that or the jack causing it is debunked. Like some have said maybe just a small area was lightly hit or caught and caused it. Or as Dave says a strange panel defect that failed after time 🤔.
I leased an 86 Buick Summerset, brand new.. in a week the engine started knocking loudly. I turned it off, called the dealership. They took the car for two weeks. After giving it back, the knocking returned. This cycle of give and take went on for 6 months. Because it was a lease, I had no remedy. It wasn’t my car. My point was that it is possible to find a like new car in storage.
Dave do not let that little buckle bother you.. It might just be a factory defect.. Go messing around with it, without knowing for sure will lead to problems
Where I live the few examples I've seen had thrashed interiors, ratty bodies and either needed engine, transmissions or both and cost 3 times that amount. I'd be at somebody's place YESTERDAY if I could pick up a car like that in condition that good.
You should watch some no nonsense know how videos for first start procedures 😂 If you’re getting low compression you can shoot a little atf or marvel mystery into the cylinders and test compression. If your compression doesn’t improve it’s probably the head gasket or valve train. If compression improves then it’s probably bad rings or cylinders
A while back, I put a 4G63 and five speed manual transmission from a 1991 L300 in my 1982 Mitsubishi L300 van to replace the old 1.6 and four speed manual column shift.
I’m not sure why people are questioning the lower compression, it’s a turbo engine that boosts pressure (compression) the cylinders will be lower compression. And no oil on the cylinder walls yet And others that have direct knowledge confirm they are low compression.

Looks like the buckle was caused by it being lowered off jacks onto something under under the rear bumper. This impinged the bumper and transferred the force through the tail light and into the rear fender. Probably lowered the car down onto a cardboard box full of books or something.
And you’ve gained a follower you lucky bastard
Thanks for the sub
SCORED nice color Two 👌
Might as well call it Star Lord 👍
That would be a good plate
That was the way it came from the factory . Back by the tail light, you got lucky, paying 1200 dollars
Could buckle have been caused by the jack being overtightened in place?
It definitely looks to me like the post up in the corner where the jack rests was tweaked and causing the problem. Surprised he didn’t see that when he was editing the video
4G63 Power. Awesome.
Totally groovy 😎
Some people hit the jackpot. I'm not one of those guys. Dang it
Squirting in a little KROIL. Or PB blaster. Or any oil really. Will bring up the compression. If it's not valve related.
I'm betting the "buckle" damage is from a low speed parking lot accident. A pickup truck with the tailgate down may have hit it when backing up or something like that. Either way, doesn't look anything more than cosmetic.
Yeah Ill fix all the little imperfections and the turbo and see how she drives
Put a hellcat in it, what a toy. They are a mean looking cat to start with!
Last video I kept saying "HOW?! SCRAP?!". Since then I've seen many RUclips Shorts of just how many people out there don't even know how to change a tire, let alone know their car has one in it...
I would call this car "Lemon Maringoo".
Yeah I think that is the problem people see how easy stuff looks on the internet and then give up when its not
Awesome find, must have been parked in a garage for a long time.
I was one that suggested maybe something in the trunk area had done the damage from inside . I guess that or the jack causing it is debunked. Like some have said maybe just a small area was lightly hit or caught and caused it. Or as Dave says a strange panel defect that failed after time 🤔.
Yeah something happened ill figure it out after I get her running
nice find!
Thanks
Always liked those cars back n the day.
They have great body lines
Great paint match, weird quarter panel repair/replace?
Im going to pull the tail light and then see if I can figure out what is going on with that buckle
Always do compression checks at work.
That cars friggin awesome Dave you’re right it’s certainly a cream alright .a cool machine what find 👍
Where I live the few examples I've seen had thrashed interiors, ratty bodies and either needed engine, transmissions or both and cost 3 times that amount. I'd be at somebody's place YESTERDAY if I could pick up a car like that in condition that good.
Great video! Good luck with the car! I'm a new subscriber!
You should watch some no nonsense know how videos for first start procedures 😂
If you’re getting low compression you can shoot a little atf or marvel mystery into the cylinders and test compression. If your compression doesn’t improve it’s probably the head gasket or valve train. If compression improves then it’s probably bad rings or cylinders
2.6 have a small "jet" valve that will drop. 2.6 are truck motors. Put a 4g63 in it.
A while back, I put a 4G63 and five speed manual transmission from a 1991 L300 in my 1982 Mitsubishi L300 van to replace the old 1.6 and four speed manual column shift.
There's a micro filter in the rubber hoses leading from the fuel tank. If you dont remove it, it could block fuel.
I’m not sure why people are questioning the lower compression, it’s a turbo engine that boosts pressure (compression) the cylinders will be lower compression. And no oil on the cylinder walls yet
And others that have direct knowledge confirm they are low compression.
Yeah plus I am in Colorado at 7800ft I think so it seems to be normal and it sounded like the 3rd cylinder cleared out
Enjoy your videos can you include more content in depth Just bits and pieces lately. Not much happening in the videos anymore.
Does it have a buckle on the other side ? On the left side tail light?
.
See that timing chain built to last not a belt like you get now.
Yeah I like chains unless they are on an Audi then its on the back of the engine and a pain to redo
I have a fiji blue 1989 and love it just rebuilt the whole car.
That is cool man they are defiantly cool cars
Ooooooh yea can't wait to see her on the road.....did you figure out the crease on the rear quarter??
