I own a 1987 Conquest that my family bought new in 1987. The ultimate fix for the broken studs is the web/connections between each of the exhaust ports on the manifold need to be cut which allows the casting to relax. The flat mating surface of the manifold then needs to be re-planed. With it stress relieved that should resolve future issues and also cracks that form in the casting bends itself over time.
Starion/Conquest didn't blow me away as current models back then, but I sure do like 'em now. I prefer the styling of these over it's replacement, the Eclipse/Talon.
I had an 85 Starion, before the flares and bulges were tacked on. I thought it looked sleeker and cleaner. I know it may seem weird. But I really always liked the look of those Conquest/Starion.. I guess the body shaping and the ultra wide tires in the back just made it look kinda mean.
My dad bought a new Conquest TSi when I was a kid and I was in love with that car... Sold his 240Z to buy it, unfortunately, but he couldn't haul two kids in the Z. The Conquest was a cool car for the time and it was fairly reliable, and my dad eventually traded it in on a new 3000GT VR4 to replace it but that car had so many freaking problems he traded it in on an NSX less than a year later and couldn't haul the kids around anymore 🤣
I won the SCCA Solo 2 national Championship in 1992 driving a bone stock except for BFG R1s 1989 Blue Conquest. What a fun car to drive and great handling. Miss that car
The late 80’s early 90’s had some really amazing cars that made for real good sales competition. I really wanted a Dodge Conquest but wound up with a Nissan 300zx. Almost did t seem what u got, they were all really wins in the end.
Ah, I wondered why it disappeared. I hadn't watched it yet (I tend to watch all my subbed channels in a batch) and thought that red Volvo S90 has magically turned into a red Mitsubishi Starion!
My 87 conquest was red, had the same steering wheel, same interior, on mine, all the exterior plastic parts were faded, hatch, bumpers, I once carried me and 5 passengers in mine. It registers 150mph and I personally know it will reach 145mph.Also it had over 256k miles when I sold it Makes me want another, it was my first car. I never called it my Chrysler Conquest, it was my Dodge conquest, The title said it was a Dodge/Chrysler Conquest. Nice vid Wizard
Those 2.6L 4G54 Mitsu engines were notorious shakers, being at the large end for 4 cylinder engines.....very agricultural units. No surprise it breaks studs. The smaller, single cam 4G63 version was very common as a forklift/equipment engine and while tough, was also quite primitive and shaky.
Back in 1990, friend of mine named Dana had one of these. It was a Chrysler Conquest TSI. He dropped me off at my apartment at 11th and Crescent in Midtown Atlanta. That thing had so much power, when he took off, it didn't Spin and squall but instead it hooked and took off like a bat out of hell. I swear it raised the front wheels off the ground about 5 in. Blew my mind!
20 yrs ago every starion/conquest owner I knew gave up on the car and sold it for nothing due to a bad fuel injectors that you couldn't buy replacements for anywhere. I would hope that since then somebody started producing replacements.
The manifold studs breaking are caused by the aluminium head and exhaust manifold contracting and expanding at different rate causing the end studs to rock. After so many thousand cycles they fail. It is highly recommended to change all end studs while you're at it. So many engine types suffer from this problem. Some manufacturers make the manifold end holes much larger and use longer studs with spacers to minimize the stud rocking
When I was 18, so..1991. A local dealership let me take their fully loaded, same year, electric blue one for a 24hr test drive. It was one of the most fun days of driving I've ever had. Payment was going to be 160/m with an 84' Fiero trade in. I had to turn the deal down because at that time, a turbo one of these was going to be 240/m for insurance for me. My only job at the time was delivering newspapers in my 83' F. Escort wagon 2nd/car. I still want one..
My 88 Conquest TSi had the 4 spoke steering wheel. To my knowledge, the only difference between the two brands version was the Conquest said Conquest Tsi across the back of the spoiler, had a TSi logo on the front fenders, and no Mitsubishi logo on the steering wheel. The key had a Chrysler pentastar logo. I don't recall any other differences between the two. The guy I sold it to reported the turbo bearings failed in the mid to late 90's from poor oiling. I bet switching to synthetic oil could have helped avoid that failure, but that was back when Mobil 1 was 5x the cost of everything else.
Hey Car Wizard, I have a 1987 Starion that I'm finally rebuilding the engine. Before the rebuild I would drive this car around Fort Worth and people would always come and ask me what kind of car is that? They told me is was cool looking even though it needed a paint job. I had this car since 1990 and finally giving it some TLC. Hope to share after its complete on RUclips.
2.6L truck engine with notorious head gasket problems. The used car lots in the 90's couldn't give these way. BUTTTTTTT, man, the exterior styling is/was beautiful.
Had an '86 Starion, first year with the wider body with fender flares. Only drawback was the paint chipped very easily on the flared sections, which they later remedied with clear adhesive covers. Was a fun car and fit in anywhere you went with it. Rallied with it all over the Northeast. Turbo got noisy at around 40,000 miles, so I sold it. Had also been interested in some Mitsubishi models from the early 80s, called Cordia and Tredia. Almost purchased a Tredia sedan. (Someone must have been thinking of tires when naming these). But I am glad I waited and got that Starion.
The big difference that I always found was the tail lights and of course the Starion or Conquest badges. I owned a 1985 Dodge smooth body Conquest and then had a 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSi and a 1989 Chrysler Conquest TSi. Loves them all.
My friend in highschool has a last 2 yrs model, and it was AWESOME. I remember having switches on the inside because there were little lights all down the side of the car. I guess I never thought about that not being stock. It was a beautiful white and black car and I tell you what this is quite a machine. Slalom course!! That's amazing
I had an '87 Conquest. When these cars first came out, (meaning the TSI/ESI version), I thought they were the sexiest thing ever. I drooled and longed to own one. I did test drive one, but the insurance payment for a 21 year-old in a turbo two-door was as much as the car payment itself! So I left empty-handed. Until several years later when I found a nice red used one, which I bought with far too little inspection and looking over, lol. I loved that car.
I always liked these cars. I had a Mitsubishi based Dodge Challenger stick shift back in the early '80s. I liked that one as well. It had the MCA-Jet 4 cylinder. One weird quirk of that car was that the trunk lid was the stereo antenna. It was mounted with nylon washers to isolate it from ground. I discovered that while mounting a CB antenna on the trunk edge. That ended up grounding the stereo antenna so no reception and the CB antenna wouldn't tune. I isolating the trunk edge CB antenna mount from the trunk lid and ran a dedicated ground from the antenna mount to a body bolt in the trunk. That fixed both issues. Strange design.
Mitsubishi and Chrysler had a relationship, particularly with the Eagle brand. Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse were 'twin' cars as just one example.
You got some thing right wizard, but also missed some. Conquest and Stations have their own unique badging (outside and on the steering wheel), but the cars have more cosmetic difference. For starters, the tail lights are different than the Conquest. Also on Starions, the front air dam grill is painted black, while on the Conquest it is body color. A previous owner painted my cars dam to black, if you don't believe me look back at your conquest video, faded color matched air dam grill. Also Conquest and Starions came in different colors. Red is the most common, but for example my cars color, Y59 San Marino Yellow was only offered for 1988 and 1989 model years, Conquest Only. Wish I had you around to fix my car :( needs a turbocharger rebuild. Would happily pay you good money too :(
Would you still be willing to look at / fix my Lemon for a good chunk of change? I got the cash now and I want to crush it at this point. It is a lemon, the odometer has been rolled back. But it was my first car I bought as a 16 year old. I have barely driven it. It running and me driving it is just a faded / dim memory at this point.
Back in the day of these cars, I knew two guys that bought them, a Starion and a Conquest. They would always be racing against each other. The Conquest was the nicer car with a thumping sound system, comfier seats, and better [?] build quality. But the Starion was the faster of the two, though not by much. Funny thing, they BOTH blew out the front struts!!! But yeah, basically the same car. Hey, it was the Eighties!!!
Mid 90’s, I worked at a Jeep/Eagle dealership. We would get customers looking to compare the Eagle Talon, with the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which were essentially the SAME car. The biggest, and most immediate difference between the two, was the fit/finish. Mitsubishi’s attention to detail in their finishing, and quality control was far superior.
I always loved these cars. Really wanted one about twenty years ago but they were hard to find even back then. Also wanted a set of the wheels for my 300ZXT but never got close enough to a set to see if they would work. They are a gorgeous 16x8 in front and 16x9 in the rear. Neat car!!
How does Hoovie shoe horn himself into almost every video? LOL , Im ok with it! Today on Hoovie's Garage - How Im keeping Car Wizard in business and early retirement
While you have the turbo off, you might consider upgrading, the 12a spools super fast, but at 7 or 10 lbs, it only pushes like 200 cfm on a good day. a 16g and a manual boost controller really breaths a lot of life back into this old girl
Late 70's the Big3 invested in the Japanese automakers. Cars like these were called "Badge cars" or re-badged. Ford bought into Mazda Chrysler bought into Mitsubishi GM bought into Isuzu The purchases were for drive line technology mostly, the Japanese had the superior front wheel drive tech, better 4cylinder gas and Isuzu had the best 4cylinder Diesel / small truck experience. There are many other beneficial reasons, to many to list here. In the 80's it was a "can't beat em join em" decision that was mutually beneficial.
Would not call it a copycat car but a rebadged car as Chrysler and Mitsubishi did a lot of rebadging of cars. I believe the Conquest was just a rebadged Starion.
I had that same car years ago and it had intermittent electrical problems that the dealer tried dozens of times to repair and couldn't. It would stall out of no where and wouldn't restart
Ive only had to drill out one exhaust stud, maybe ive been lucky, but Ive worked on a lot of these heads without that problem. One thing I would do while I had that exhaust manifold off is to cut spaces in the webbing, or just cut the webbing entirely out. This helps prevent cracking, which is a common problem with this manifold. Cracked manifolds can be repaired, Ive done it, but you end up with an ugly franken manifold.
Is using a grade 8 bolt into aluminum the best choice? It's really easy to chew up aluminum with a much harder bolt. Why not use a grade 8 stud? Or a stainless steel stud? Or if you insist on using a grade 8 bolt.... at least install a steel helicoil. I had to do basically the same job on my Daytona 2.2 Turbo a few years back. Maybe because I live in rust country, I went with studs. Makes future servicing (if need be) much easier.
my father was owning one of this in the late 80iest also in Red. I was 6 years old and still remember some of the trips we have made around the swiss alps.

I know it may seem weird. But I really always liked the look of those Conquest/Starion.. I guess the body shaping and the ultra wide tires in the back just made it look kinda mean.
"Corporate needs you to find the differences between this car and this car"
"They're the same car"
Drove one in 85...loved it and almost died...it was fast for my young self LOL
Couldn't believe your last video with the BugNinja went private! That was a good video
Why did it go private?
Ah, I wondered why it disappeared. I hadn't watched it yet (I tend to watch all my subbed channels in a batch) and thought that red Volvo S90 has magically turned into a red Mitsubishi Starion!
Did it? Why I was going to watch it
Back to where when Mitsubishi Cars were not totally ridiculous. Would love to see a JDM 89` Mirage Hatchback aka Dodge Colt again some time
My 87 conquest was red, had the same steering wheel, same interior, on mine, all the exterior plastic parts were faded, hatch, bumpers, I once carried me and 5 passengers in mine. It registers 150mph and I personally know it will reach 145mph.Also it had over 256k miles when I sold it Makes me want another, it was my first car. I never called it my Chrysler Conquest, it was my Dodge conquest, The title said it was a Dodge/Chrysler Conquest. Nice vid Wizard
those late 80's chrysler conquests tended to run hot withh all the emissions equipment of the time....yessss
Always loved these cars! You could pick these up all day long in nice shape for 1500 in the mid to late 90’s. Def was a fun first car to have in 98.
It’s always nice to see Hoovie visit the wizard!!!
These cars were so ahead of their time
yeah but you couldnt find parts if something broke ....you needed to travel like 3 hours to get most any thing.
“My car has a turbo!”
“So? My Starion has a turbo on the engine AND the seatbelts!”
Ooooo.. I spy with my little eye a typhoon in the background 👀
Yip I’ve been wondering what Tyler’s been hiding last couple weeks. 02:19 u found it 😎
I love your bromance with Hoovie
Both are so rare now I’d take either starion or conquest. Glad to see wizard isn’t cranky in this video. :)
I had a beautiful 87 blue conquest, I always wanted the factory hood that came with vents
"How hot?"
"Real hot."
"Well at least you made it here."
Car is on fire in the parking lot.
Mini Van engine from 1984, same as Chrysler-Mitsu I rebuilt back in about 1993, Oil Pump was chain driven - and chain broke.
"Prefer" the name Conquest over Starion. However, would Never kick either out of my fleet/garage. Beautiful time piece!
*Pop up up and down headlights* _Pop up up and down headlights_
Also, Urination bob 😂 here's to 40 years of Hoovies Garage and the Wizard youtubes.
My dad had one of these while i was a child and i fell in love with it. Still wish it was around
I have an 88 Starion! It only has 54k miles on it. I will say it’s super tough to find OEM parts for these.
Badge engineering at its best.
Oldsmobile Bravada
Chevy Trailblazer
GMC Envoy
Buick Rainier
Isuzu Ascender
Saab 9-7X
Hummer H3
Jesus. That’s ridiculous! After being so used to the typical 3 cousin cars at that time, no one would expect 8!
What happened to the Volvo V70 video with Bug Ninja? I was in the middle of watching it when changed to a private video.
Got an 89 Conquest 20 yrs ago. Put a 4g63 in. Still have it. Original paint and no rust. People don't know what it is.
Have a San Marino car.
Anyone else remember when Clarkson had one of those in the 1500 Pound Cheap coupe challenge? Then he put a huge turbo on it and blew it up
i'm a clot and i've ruined my car.
But I won!
@@benjaminschmied7998 Those old TG episodes were amazing
Mitsubishi and Chrysler had a relationship, particularly with the Eagle brand. Eagle Talon and Mitsubishi Eclipse were 'twin' cars as just one example.
And the old 90s avenger had a Mitsubishi engine
They were triplets. The Plymouth Laser was the third sibling.
Also watching this video again, when your wife said 90's styling right after you said 80's 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Starion.... what a great car for its time...!!!! I drove one and loved it...!!!!
Neat car!!
Great thing about flip up headlights is they don’t yellow and dull. Bad thing is they quit flipping up.🤷♂️
To be fair they are likely glass lenses anyway so it wasn't an issue to begin with ;)
Great video!! Love the Starion ESI-R. Very few left in good condition.
What happened to the Volvo V70R video... I was half way through and when I came back it had gone!
Guessing the owner was unchuffed about something said? Can't think what. Anyway, they all die in the end
Late 70's the Big3 invested in the Japanese automakers.
Cars like these were called "Badge cars" or re-badged.
Ford bought into Mazda
Chrysler bought into Mitsubishi
GM bought into Isuzu
The purchases were for drive line technology mostly, the Japanese had the superior front wheel drive tech, better 4cylinder gas and Isuzu had the best 4cylinder Diesel / small truck experience.
Reminds me of a 86' Supra... however I would still love to see you showing a 92' Toyota Supra 2.5 GT Twin Turbo R.
It's a golden day in Kansas!
A golden shower with Urination Bob...
I had that same car years ago and it had intermittent electrical problems that the dealer tried dozens of times to repair and couldn't. It would stall out of no where and wouldn't restart
Probably low blinker fluid. Also, the muffler bearings go out after 40-50K miles.
cx racing rad, bmw blue coolant, mks 160 degree thermostat, Top End performance ss exhaust manifold stud
Ahh yes, my mother absolutely despises my lemon. (I have Milwaukee tools) :)
Mrs. Wizard has a potential career as a hand model! Great video, as always! Thanks, Weeezard!
Chrysler has been passed around more than my high school's prom queen.
sounds like your still salty about it
@@TrayJayRecords - Hey! Rumor has it that she had a child 9 months later named Juan.
Say hi to your mom for ALL of us.
my father was owning one of this in the late 80iest also in Red. I was 6 years old and still remember some of the trips we have made around the swiss alps.
