@@Junkyard_Dave I'm from Europe cool car i knew back in the days Mitsubishi wanted to get in Group-B and maybe into Group-S rally with the Starion 4WD after 86 the have to build around 200 cars to enter.. Sadly the Group-B ended in 86 the Group-S was cancelled and sadly Starion without even turning a wheel in rally remained a very rare vehicle..
$1200?!?! ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!! I USED To Hate Yellow Cars. I ❤️ This One & Have Always Wanted One. A Red One Popped Up On FB Marketplace 30 Min Away, But We Were Already Headed To Hawaii. I Wish I Woulda Went & Bought The Car. It Was Gone Later That Day. Nice Find!!
Haven't seen a Chrysler Conquest since I was a kid in the 80s. That car is in almost pristine condition! Dude didn't know what he had. I can't believe dude was gonna scrap a car that nice. With a little cleanup he woulda got way more for it. You got a deal on it!
Hi. Dave, I have 4 of this cars, I can't tell you more about how great they are. Keep this car in original condition. The engine is powerful enough. Just throw that new turbo on, and you'll see. That buckle on the back is damage. It is not from the factory like that. Front spoilers are made of fiberglass, and repair is easy. When you take him off, you'll see . It is a spaceship 😊😊
I used to work at a car dealership when these were new, and they're a whole lot of fun to drive. We got stories based on these cars. This was Fast and Furious way before the movies!
You friggin' stole that thing! The wheels alone are worth what you paid for the entire car, and to find one with the cloth interior and no sunroof is also awesome. That's also a very rare color which was only offered for 1 or 2 years. Amazing find.
My brother used to have a red one and it was so freaking fast!!! It was no joke!!! He sold it to his best friend, and his best friend never put oil in it and blew it up!!
That interior would shampoo back to brand new 💯 that whole car would detail back to almost showroom 👌 you got so lucky with that thing! What a sick little ride!
Saw this car and was talking with the seller. Really cool dude and I am glad it went to you. I have an 89 Quest and have had 6 of these. Airdam damage is common, please keep the bumpers and panels original! Do not replace! Very nice job and thanks for saving it. Subbed!
I had one of these for a short period of time. The Mitsubishi version . Very cool car. Ahead of its time. The only shortfall is it doesn't have rack and pinion steering. I think they have kits for conversion. What a deal on the Banana 🍌 ! Bring it back to life !
I have two older cousins to that ride. 1984 Colt GTS Turbo's. G32bt engine, 105hp, twin stick and 1900lbs. Nice find Dave. Hard to find those in that condition.
Absolutely depressing to see this not end up in a diehard fans hands. One of the very few cars that needs no mods and this is a gem with low miles, mostly original paint and rare interior.
Try adding a precharge oil pump to bring up the pressure before starting. One of the problems is that TSI will start and oil pressure will not rise for a few seconds. Bearings suffer from delay.
I know a guy who bought a brand new 1966 Mustang Coup. To date, he has 20K miles on it. It has been garaged and driven a few times during the summer, especially to car shows. Some people will buy a car and keep it as mint as possible because they know it will be worth a lot of money in the future. Based on the condition of the Conquest, I would say it was garaged and rarely driven by an owner who knew the car would be worth saving for future generations! So, the mileage does not surprise me. Some people just don't understand that some cars aren't driven like your average daily driver!
Wow. Sweet find! I remember when they came out. My girlfriend at the time dad worked for the dodge dealer. He drove one home so we all got to ride in it. Was so cool. You stole this one for 1200$
I bought one of these in 1984. At the time it was the most expensive car I had ever purchased. White exterior with maroon interior. It was a fantastic car.
Keep that baby ORIGINAL!!! No LS BS to many LS swaps are boring... This is the original rice burner here in the states... it would be so much cooler as it was originally intended!!
That's a steal. Rode in one in 1989 and have owned turbo-only cars ever since. Been looking to get one over the passed few years. Hard to find a decent one that runs under $10k. Parts are scarce as understand, but well worth the effort to save and restore imo.
You couldn't more correct very underrated vehicle and not a day goes by that I regret selling mines years ago. Restore it, you couldn't ask for more for the price you got it for and that's a true gift.
Dave man I know you said you wanna keep her. But I had one in high school and I sold it when I was in boot camp for the Navy. Regrets for life on that sell. I have looked for another and never found one that wasn’t totally trashed or mega overpriced. If you ever consider selling her I would love to take her off your hands! I love that car!
Around the 15:00 mark, those are indeed for the seatbelts. Kinda an on/off for the automatic seatbelts. Moto360 sells new airdams for the car, made from the same kind of plastics as atv’s. So they will bend rather than break like oem. You got into this car at a great time as 5 years ago there was basically no aftermarket support for these cars!
I had a 1987, bought it new from the dealer it sat on the lot for over a year, it was red with black velour interior...blew the turbo out of it so put a bigger one in...loved that car...I've seen one on RUclips with a LS in it...
That was a steal of deal for this car. I love these cars and the color is awesome too. My neighbor had one for years in a bright red color it was so cool.
😮😮😮 Holy crap! Seriously?! A childhood friend of mine had a bright red Conquest with black leather interior way back in the day. That was a DAMN nice ride. Congrats on this man. What a lucky break.
Dude thats crazy luck.. Ive searched on and off for years for this car and they were just to expensive for what they are for me to buy it and it make sense. Its not really super collectable, Ive just always liked them
Yeah I really don't buy cars to resell and I try to do projects that I want to do instead of what everyone else is doing. It will be a fun car to drive and take to shows.
I'm jealous of the north american car market, it's so huge that you always have great variety, from domestic to european and asian imports, and the prices and cost of ownership are fair. On the other side, here in South America our market is small, having a car is a luxury (because of this fact, and in part because of taxes). Used cars prices are ridiculously high too. Incredible find, I hope you keep it as stock as possible.
I had a 89 conquest tsi years ago. Such a cool car and very fun to drive. You can swap two vacuum lines and up the boost so long as you have hard pipes.
What a score….I remember sitting in a yellow with tan cloth back in the late 80s….it was on the dealership floor and I thought it was such a cool color combo!
Love those cars..my brother had a black 87 conqest..such a fun car to drive..handles great and pretty good performance for its day..cant wait to see it back on the road
I’m a fan of this car I myself had a Mitsubishi Starion and I believe that that car was ahead of its time and looks and even today it has such a nice appeal to it brings back memories
Awesome purchase, I had a late 88 TSI Black on Black with adjustable suspension from the factory. Wheels were wider in the rear, the levers in the center console when raised release the seat belt mechanism around the doors. The front air dam is unuptainium. Lot's of tricks for the stock look and hp bump up
Yeah Ill probably see what the exhaust looks like when I get it on a lift and probably end up redoing that and I don't have the hard pipes so ill probably just make some custom ones and go from there
The hatches on the Starion/ Conquest tend to naturally migrate to the rear. You can adjust them forward by opening the hatch to take pressure off the struts, loosening the hinge bolts at the roof, and pushing forward on the hatch while tightening the bolts again. some good facebook groups for the StarQuest cars.
WoW DUDE $1200 ? what a great freaking deal. I gotta admit I'm a bit jealous, I've always loved those totally underrated cars. Don't repaint it that paint should be pretty easy to save, it's only original once dude and that car is minty. Very well bought my dude.
great find! keep it stock and just do a cosmetic restoration! that looks great inside out and it doesnt need any mods done to it. it looks great as it is!
I didn’t know these even existed until about 2000. I had an apartment in a sleepy little farm town in mid Illinois that overlooked main street. One night around midnight or 1 am a white one rolled through really slow. No idea where it was from and never saw it again, but I was in love with the looks and have always wondered why they didn’t sell better.
I think the only reason they didn't sell well is because they were a 4 cylinder turbo at the time people thought 4 cylinders were gas savers and slow, plus they were pretty pricy even back then
Given that you are a detail oriented guy, no doubt this car, especially at the price, will be fantastic. Great Score! It looks really nice in your new shop!
Super jealous. I have wanted a Starion forever. I feel like a lot of people sleep on the cars from the late Malaise Era. But towards the end they got “better” and so quirky and weird how could you not love them. Good luck Dave!
Had a new one back then as a kid. Turbolag big-time just like my 5speed 1987 Peugeot 505 Turbo. Reason I unloaded my stock White Conquest? Bodyflex and creaks and groans that just kept getting worse and worse with miles and time. Would never have wanted to get in an accident in that car. Doesn't take much to bend the rims and send them out to be straightened again and again.
Dude you stole that! I just paid 2K for an Mk1 Scirocco that doesn't run, and I was stoked with that deal. Make this your next car to work on; it's an awesome car that you don't see on RUclips!
worked in a shop about 20 years ago that all i did was rebuild those 2.6 Mitsubishi. would build about 1.5 to 2 a day if everything went as expected. biggest failure we seen in these was the balance shafts. they would spin the bearings on them. i installed elimination kits in probably 75% of them. mopar used that motor in the k cars and mini vans.
From what I remember the factory crank could be an issue when you start to crank the boost. Back in the mid '90s, people started swapping the 4G63 into these cars. NOW people are starting to LS swap these.
Congrats on your score! I've always liked these cars! They are hugely underrated and underappreciated! Do whatever it takes to return it to it's former glory! You will not regret it!
That’s a steal! Great find! If the engine is ok just restore it. But if the engine is blown why not change the engine into a more modern one? As far as I know the 6 bolter 4G63T’s directly bolts almost straight through the starion transmission. It would be a great build & parts of a 4G63 is so munch easier to find.
I remember when these were first released. I'd wander through the local Chrysler dealers showroom and drool over the Conquest. It's a cool car from a time when Mitsubishi still made cool cars.
I loved that car my best friend had one and left it with me for a week and I fell in love with it!! Nice find Dave hook it up and hopefully maybe put some bigger turbos on it. I want to see what you do with it ! What happened to green hellcat, Durango, he was working on????
the levers on the console by the shifter are emergency seat belt release in case of the accident. Also, hatch can be adjusted to sit flash with the wing by playing with the top hinges. Good luck finding front air damn 😏 NICE FIND!
That 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSI is a perfect example of a survivor car! If you do repaint the whole car, you'll at least be able to replicate the decals. Today's technology will ensure the authenticity. Unless you find the legit OEM decals. So glad to see a historical icon being saved. Worthy of being in a car collection and/or a museum for future generations!
@@Junkyard_Dave I saw a few Mitsubishi Starions in Okinawa. Only one was modified and very competitive. The rest were stock and in immaculate condition. Stateside, I've only seen two at car shows and they were very low mileage (both under 10K miles).
The levers in the center console are to release the automatic shoulder belts. I had one of these years ago but with a slush box. Handled well after I put springs and Koni's on it. I always thought it was underpowered but that may have had a lot to do with the transmission.
The notches in the spoiler are drain holes. Many of the hatches are set back like that from the factory. Black n tan interior is pretty rare. The milage seems to fit the condition. Levers on the console are seat nelt releases. Head gasket failure wasnt too common but did happen. Rarely, the head would crack between the valves on the #3. Most of the time that was hardly noticeable. The reason for the cracked heads and failed head gaskets on these cars is the intake design. 2 & 3 run leaner than 1 & 4. Some have swapped to mpi. Good air flow wasn't much of a forethought. If you pull the head. Have the jet valves removed and welde up the holes. Swap the maf sensor for a gen 2 eclipse turbo maf. If you're not worried about smog go with a full exhaust replacement. Pull the tail light out. That will tell you more about that buckle in the quarter
The Starion, so called because someone at Mitsubishi mispronounced 'Stallion'. I went in one in around '94. That was very cheap for what it is. Here a run and drive will cost £16,000.
Here’s another cool car Dave owns we will never see completed or run before he decides to blow it apart and never get to it again. You need to do a start to finish video on it.
Super find and I agree with u about the mk3. Bought one without ending and trans, the fuel pump went out so they swapped the driveway into a Cressida. I saved the car from the crusher. Spend a while looking for motor and trans which was ridiculous for a 7mgte. Got lucky and found a complete rusted out turbo manual. Just waiting to clear out garage space cuz in FL... HOA. Love the Starquest cars. U got a new subbie ❤ looking fwd to the end results. 👍🏾
Had a '86 (ex-SCCA Car) and then a white '88. Back in the day, Top End Performance in CA was the parts/aftermarket performance parts source. They had exhaust manifold cracking/exhaust stud issues from heat expansion. The intercooler tanks could also have blowouts (cracks) if boosted too much. I would so a basic pressure test.
You found a Gem right there man. It deserves a complete restoration
@_Haris1904 definitely gonna happen

@Junkyard_Dave might want to invest in an aftermarket head from Top End performance with a set of arp head studs. The stock head has some flaws.
Prelude seats of this era are very similar and a bit easier to find. Wonderful seats, highly recommend!
I am very surprised they are comfy but hold you in tight
@Junkyard_Dave The prelude seats even have adjustable lumbar support. I have them in my CRX and couldn't be happier with them.

the levers on the console by the shifter are emergency seat belt release in case of the accident. Also, hatch can be adjusted to sit flash with the wing by playing with the top hinges. Good luck finding front air damn 😏 NICE FIND!
Ill look into the hatch adjustment I have seen on some cars if a strut is weak it will make the hatch not lign up
I love those cars, such a rare gem, I havent seen that color before also, great buy excited for content on it
Thanks I should have a first start video after I get back from SEMA
Definitely in my top 10 cars I’d like to own. Great find.
There was nothing better than late age Japanese interiors. The materials they used were better than anything else made today..
Its pretty nice even after 37 years
You're a lucky man! Those are rare and hard as heck to find. I love em! 😊
They really are hard to find in good condition
Drop an LS1 in that thing. It'll be a drifting beast
nice score Dave, personally not my cup of tea, but really amazing condition for such an old car.
That front spoiler is the rarest. The one piece are hard to come by. Most are 3 piece. 2 outer pieces and one center piece.
Yes it's worth it! Keep it bro
I need a 95 hardtop talon gsx and a gallant vr4 maybe a stealth tt to finish off the Mitsubishi collection
My builds are all Ford related, but I have always loved these. Subbed
I have a Conquest without engine. It will get a Ford 302
Loved these cars back in the day that little rumble it had was sweet
Yeah I will have to see what has been done to the exhaust and redo it, probably has the muffler removed or something
Every issue with the bady can be fixed.. No need to replace. Just depends on the money you want to spend to get it done.
I do all of my own work the only thing I would like to find is a air dam but if I cant I can fix this one
At one point in time that was my dream car. Loved the style!
You cant beat the body lines on these
Cool car I didn't know these were a thing great score and video man
That 1988 Chrysler Conquest TSI is a perfect example of a survivor car! If you do repaint the whole car, you'll at least be able to replicate the decals. Today's technology will ensure the authenticity. Unless you find the legit OEM decals. So glad to see a historical icon being saved. Worthy of being in a car collection and/or a museum for future generations!
It definitely deserves to be preserved
That is interesting info thanks
Nice find. I have a feeling the engine is done, but who knows. Hope you're going to respray it the same color. It's going to pop.
Yes same color on this one, I actually think it looks good so once it's resprayed it will all match
@Junkyard_Dave Can't wait to see the build.
Here’s another cool car Dave owns we will never see completed or run before he decides to blow it apart and never get to it again. You need to do a start to finish video on it.
yup
Looks a great save for the price!! way too good for the scrap yard so hopefully you'll have it up and running soon 👍
Should be an easy fix
Super find and I agree with u about the mk3. Bought one without ending and trans, the fuel pump went out so they swapped the driveway into a Cressida. I saved the car from the crusher. Spend a while looking for motor and trans which was ridiculous for a 7mgte. Got lucky and found a complete rusted out turbo manual. Just waiting to clear out garage space cuz in FL... HOA.
Love the Starquest cars. U got a new subbie ❤ looking fwd to the end results. 👍🏾
Thanks should be a quick fix
Had a '86 (ex-SCCA Car) and then a white '88. Back in the day, Top End Performance in CA was the parts/aftermarket performance parts source. They had exhaust manifold cracking/exhaust stud issues from heat expansion. The intercooler tanks could also have blowouts (cracks) if boosted too much. I would so a basic pressure test.
Ill go through everything and make sure it is good
Dave, great find can’t wait for the next video on this car 😊
Should be able to try to get it to start this weekend
Me too.
Can't wait for the updates
The oil seal in the turbo used to perish and oil went straight into the exhaust and cause white smoke
Yeah it seems like it could be a few issues but ill get tot he bottom of it
