My dad rebuilt a turbo for a guys syclone one time then the guy took my dad for a ride in it because he was so happy with the rebuild. He said that was the fastest vehicle he has ever been in.
I remember seeing these trucks unsold at our local dealer. Dad and I passed on a Syclone and a Typhoon waiting for the 1992 Firehawk to arrive. They were super neat looking.
You didn't make a mistake at all that's for sure. The Syclone is awesome but 3rd gen Firehawks were super rare even back then. I don't think I ever saw one on the road. Only car shows decades later.
Only problem was, most dealerships, if they got 1, they only got 1. It became a dealership trophy and the dealership owner kept for them self or sold / gave it to a friend or employee. Almost none were offered to the general public. Damn fast though.
I spotted Clint Eastwood driving on Olive Ave in Burbank by the Warner Bros studios circa 2012. I think he had an office on the lot. He was driving a Syclone. It was the only time I’ve ever seen one in the wild.
Thank you jason for shining a light on my favorite truck of all time. Of the countless vehicles i have owned, my Typhoon was by far the best. Legendary.
This is by far. The fastest, scariest vehicle I have ever been in. The driver was doing 140mph around 60mph corners. That was the mid to late 90's. I would give my left nut for this truck in good condition.
Really, 280 hp? It was crazy for it's time, and handling and stopping its still decent by today's standards, but I think even a dodge minivan makes 280 hp nowadays. Sounds like the person driving is scary tho lol.
@@ctdieselnut companies back then always lied about theirs numbers as to avoid taxes it is quite known that all the cool vehicles made 100-130hp then what's on paper.
Bought mine as a leftover in '92. My local dealership had to go out of state to get it. MSRP $26,xxx. I paid $19,600. 13.6@96mph stock - Fast back in the day!
That's just the way I like them to sound! I just saw one in person a few days ago. There is something about them, while they were in motion. Thing was beautiful.
What a great review! Sy 1201 sits in my drive and although a bit faded and dog eared these days it’s still a special ride that I always enjoy driving. I purchased it back in 98 and many, many cars have come and gone from my drive since but the Syclone still remains after all these years. It’s like an old friend, and although I have considered selling it I just can’t do it as it still holds a special place in my heart. If you get the chance to get one you won’t be sorry!!
As an owner of a GMC Typhoon (blue/grey) I can tell you it was the most fun you could have with your clothes on as 23 year old sailor in 1995. I raced every ricer I could find in the San Diego area until I ultimately traded mine for a tuned Grand National. Glory days!
Thanks, for comments.. REMEMBER GMC FORMAURE. **interestingly, I finally bought A GMC : in 2007 a new, Canyon LS, 4 CYL/LOADED/2WD… ACTUALLY STILL SOME FESEMBLANCE to 1991, etc.,Actually, my thinking was to “ modify my CANYON to SOME BETTER HANDLING/ speed over the years, etc.. Anyways, still like truck, though relocated to HELENA Valley, MY, & wish I,had gotten 4 Wheel drive … budget Issues.,etc *& long retirement….
In ‘04 I had a 2000 model Dodge 2500 quad cab long bed 4x4 that had a 5 speed and a 5.9 Cummins Diesel that was pushing close to 600hp and 1300 ftlbs of torque. Even though I was a Ford guy I LoVED that truck! Like you I took advantage of an astronomical number of Ricers as well as a few Camaros and anything else that chose to underestimate the ole Work Truck. I remember one kid got mad as hell when he finally caught up to me at a stop light and tried to call my truck a POS that was smoking like a train and fixing to blow up. Haha, I said “stfu crybaby, you’re just mad because you got spanked by a Farm truck!”. He tried to argue that his car only had a 4cyl engine so I shouldn’t be so proud so I was happy to let him know that my truck “only” had a 6cyl engine AND WEIGHED OVER 8 THOUSAND POUNDS!! Haha, he was pretty upset but I’ll laugh about that one as long as I live
Years ago, I raced an 86 GN twice, from light to light down 86th street in Brooklyn. Even with a passenger and about 200 lbs of speakers in the back of my 93 Typhoon, he still could never catch my passenger door. The news of his loss made it back to Staten Island before i did.
100% relate to these comments. I had an '03 Lightning and was away at college. The town would have street drag racing on Friday. I'd go and get called out, everyone thought it was just a regular F-150. I spanked every ricer - lots of Subaru WRX and Nissan 350 Z cars, cocky losers. And a lot of pickups called me out too. All their faces after they lost by bus lengths, so funny. That truck never lost a race there.
Yup, I had a red 92 Typhoon. Did a few mods, drove it for 5 years, and sold it for $6000 more than I paid for it originally. That's driving free and having fun for 5 years. It was also known as the red light warrior. There wasn't too much you couldn't own from red light to red light. But after 70MPH, that V8 Vette is going to over take you in a matter of seconds. There is no replacement, for displacement. It's not tesla plaid mode throw you back in your seat..., but you will get the point no less.
This makes me so happy, I love stories like this! Although, I'm a little melancholy we'll probably never hear production stories like this again in the future.
A friend of mine leased one of these in the summer of '92 (the fact that they were even leasing these lends a lot of credence to the statement that they were languishing on dealer lots due to the sticker price) and I had the opportunity to drive it several times. My friend was something of a brute when it came to his cars, I remember him doing "neutral drops" in it (we were 18 y/o at the time). He'd rev it up and just slam it from neutral into gear. The result was impressive, though cringe-worthy: it would spin the tires for a fraction of a second and then take off like a banshee. Might have gotten even better than a 4.3 0-60 with that technique (not recommended). He ended up turning it in to the dealer early due to a severe "clunking" coming from the center diff, lol. That poor damned truck. My fondest memory of driving it was on a trip from Chicago up to Milwaukee for Summerfest. I remember arriving at the toll gates on the highway (remember those?!?) right next to a contemporary Corvette. The guy didn't even try. But I sure laid into it. By far the fastest vehicle on four wheels I had driven up to that point. Took several years to top that. Thanks for the memories, Jason - what a truck!
Yeah that kills the transmission, funny cuz this video even explained they put a high stall convertor in it so he could of held the brakes and got the turbo spooled up for amazing blazing hard launches all day!
Even the standard 350 V8 in the Silverado made a lot less power back then. Something like 210 Hp, though the torque wasn’t much less than the turbo V6. I can imagine slamming it from neutral would be brutal on the entire driveline..
I tried with all my might to get my mom to buy a Typhoon back in the day. I begged and pleaded, and pointed out all if it’s utility, but alas she wanted a car. A Taurus. We’ll be rocking an SHO or nothing was my response. Funny how we ended up with a base Taurus Station Wagon. I swear to god that I’m not my parents kid.
@ David Billingslea not anymore. Someone ran a stop sign and I T-Boned them w it. Had my permit w my pops in the car. They legit pulled right out in front of me. So I guess it’s probably best that she didn’t have a Typhoon or it would have been totaled.
This truck looked so cool, I never realized it was so blah on the inside and getting on it. Brings back memories of 80's transmissions when you hit that 3rd or 4th gear and the rev's dropped so much. Love how you always show a drivers perspective at the end, something so many reviews miss!
I don't remember if it was "Car and Driver" or "Road and Track", but one of their articles had this quote, and I will never forget it. "In a flash, the Ferrari is looking at nothing but tailgate!" That is how fast this truck was!
I remember riding in one before they came out. My brother's best friend was an editor for Sport Truck magazine so he was always driving over in pre production models he was loaned for writing articles. I had never been thrown back into a seat before and when he stomped the gas on the Syclone, I was blown away! Another good looking truck he had brought over was Ford's Nite Edition.
Gm had 2 trucks that I always like, the typhoon and cyclone. I graduated in 95 and have always liked the old school trucks. I don’t see either one of these trucks a lot anymore but when I do they definitely stand out!
As gear head that has owned 6 Mustangs, 2 Z06s, a Bronco, 1 2 door Tahoe, 2 F 150s, 1 Silverado and 1 Audi S4 AWD supercharged v6, I love the analyses of this beautiful machine GM had the balls to build.
These things were the Hellcats of my day as a kid going to the drag strip. I loved walking through the staging lanes and seeing rows of them and later the Typhoons there.
I never knew this fantastic truck even existed! All I know is that I would love to own one, or the typhoon. And, Jason made viewing this a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing. Cheers from Motown.
@@JasonCammisa Meh, never too much VW. Also cant help that they have made so many iconic, if not under-appreciated, masterpieces. Owned a forbidden fruit GP1 diesel while stationed in Germany, and it's still one of my all time favorite cars.
My now 79 years old mum bought a purple then new JA Starion here in Australia back in the 80s. We absolutely loved that little beast the only problem we ever had with it was the clutches burnt out really quickly. Fortunately Mitsubishi sorted out the clutch with a heavier duty clutch they used in the JB model.
My best friend and I from school were 21 years old and had the Car and Driver issue to drive us crazy with wishful thinking of owning one. We got to see and sit in one at a GMC/Buick dealership in Kingsport, TN and simply ached at not being able to start or test drive it. The wide tires were gorgeous as was the rest of the truck. Now, I'm 52 years old and would so enjoy owning one. We did get to see the toned down version that was minus the turbo and rated at a flat 200 horse power. That one is featured near the end of this video in the image of the 3 GMCs in which it's the top one with the black rims.
So badly missing the S-10 & S-15 lineups. The 4.3 was soooo reliable and quick. My S10 Blazers ( '91 & a '99) both had over 225k miles on them. The '91 was 292k before it was hit by someone who ran a stop sign. The '99 was 226k before the oil cooler line popped off of the radiator while on the highway causing a rod bearing to spin. My point is reliability. Seems like every time a company makes something worthwhile, they shortly thereafter stop producing it. Thank you very much for the videos and look forward to seeing more in the future 😀
I bought that magazine at the news stand when it came out. I was floored by the performance of a TRUCK ! Couple years later I remember street racing a guy with a white typhoon. It was definitely quick.
This is by far one of my favorite car shows on RUclips. Jason cammisa has been so fun to watch since his motortrend days. Love your work man. Keep it up.
The 93 Typhoon came with three options as i remember it. Choice of color, roof rack or not, and cassette deck or CD player. The most comfortable seat you’ve ever sat in was standard, along with the hundreds of people that would ask what the hell you were driving.
Had the pleasure of racing a Syclone when I took delivery of my brand new 1993 Camaro Z28. The Syclone had the edge. Always wished I'd been able to snag one. I do have a black HotWheels version though!
@Freedom Freedom Strange though, since Diesels were using them for quite some time. But maybe they still had trouble with the metallurgy when trying to adapt them for Gasoline engines. Like.. making them lighter made them less reliable, maybe?
How exciting, what a legend. I was a teen when they were released and couldn’t afford one. I would love a Typhoon, either one they are really beautiful. Thank you thank everyone on your crew and awesome you interviewing the creator.
@@gurnblanston3210With minor modifications. I'm not a mechanic but know many that used to own Syclones. Sure a bigger turbocharged could do the trick too. It was a rare thing to see em in stock form.
@@gurnblanston3210 actually i have driven both. The turbo was one of the earlier 3.3's. The syclone was NOT hampered by low octane gas. Both were evenly affected by altitude. Above 100mph the 911 caught up rapidly because the syclone has the aerodynamics of a brick. But off the line...the first 100 ft or so not much can touch a 4wd for traction. It was impressive...and if i recall correctly sounded like someone fired up a hoover when driving the syclone.
@@gurnblanston3210 This is correct. Heck, I had a completely bone stock '87 Mustang that ran 14.0 on the unprepped street. No way an early nineties 911 Turbo was slower than that.
I had a syclone. It was decent from what I remember. I was young when I owned and didn't know much about cars yet, I was 17 at the time. I wish I still had it. These are rare to non existent these days in decent shape for that matter. My current 88 4.3 turbo S10 is pretty fast, pretty much the same platform just 4wd instead of AWD. I can hardly keep the rear wheels from spinning in rwd mode.
The Syclone was built at the GM Truck Assembly Plant in Shreveport, Louisiana. During its premier I along with my Boss Al Valdez, GM Shreveport Plant Engineer were selected to present the truck at the Texas Motor Speedway. We gave a short presentation as a professional driver drove it around the track.
Always wanted one. Sat in one as a teen in 1991 drooling. I drove 400whp Evo's for years and would trade it for one of these in a heartbeat. LOVE the GMC Syclone 😎👍
Around the same time my buddies and I went everywhere in a stock s10 blazer with a 5 spd and it was so much fun. If we had a typhoon... we'd probably all be dead 🤣
I had an 87 S-10 Blazer with a 2.8 liter/4 speed automatic. I believe it was the SLOWEST damn vehicle made around that time. But everything else on it was cool. I miss the 90’s!
@@kwiturbitchin5277 lol. My buddy had a Beretta gt with the 2.8. At least you guys had a v6. I was relegated to an 85 Dodge 600 with a 2.2. It wasn't winning any street races but would haul ass through fields and ditches.
I had 84 blaze with carburetor. It was a terd but I drove it like a stolen typhoon haha on and off road. Only trans problems. Tried to get my grandad to buy a typhoon but he went 4 door 4.3.. dangit. I did get to drive a typhoon around 1998. Super fast
@@kwiturbitchin5277 I had an old S10 4x4 I bought dirt cheap from a buddy for $400 with the 2.8 and auto, yes it was slow as hell. Even slower with a body lift and 33” tires. Still was respectable off road, as long as you didn’t have to climb any steep hills lol.

I don't usually stick around for the drive at the end. This time to see how fast this truck is was worth it. Good video on an American icon with fog lights Jason.
@@tmseh its torque is special. Ours 0-30 is dope. 30-60 is decent. After 60 it sucks air since its a brick lol. First gear is especially low but that shift is oh so satisfying.
I had a 91 Sonoma 4.3 V6. I loved that truck more than any vehicle I’ve ever had. I miss it every day. A syclone is something that would have killed me lol
My father was one of the lucky people who drag raced these in English town, and got to drive the typhoon, grand national, and cyclones on GM'S proving grounds. Never forgot the privilege of riding in these as a kid!
Drove one of these in Texas a while back, wish I had bought it at that time. Such a beast of a machine, I absolutely love thing and I'm not a truck guy. One word of advice: Treat those historic magazines with a little bit more respect. They're not printing anymore of those, and he's treating them like something he's going to dispose of after the filming of the episode.
one of my biggest regrets *EVERY* was selling my Syclone. It was build on a GOOD day. 3.8sec 0-60, 13 flat in the 1/4..with unbelievable 60ft times. Just a beast.
There's some serious hate for pushrods on this channel. The 4700 RPM redline wasn't due to the pushrods, plenty of pushrod engines bump 9K. The RPM limit was probably due to the bean counters.
Absolutely love the syclone and typhoon. I love the look I get when a young kid asks what kind of car would you buy if you could have any one? And I say I would look for an all original syclone or typhoon from GMC. Then you get looked at like you have 3 heads. Lol 😆
I remember going to the dealership and looking at one of these when they were brand new sitting on the lot and of course I couldn't afford one but have always been a fan and would be so awesome to own one of these one day even to this day all these years later it's one of my favorite vehicles of all time 👍
When my wife and I were shopping for my sons first vehicle in 1999 the local Ford dealership had a Syclone for sale. He and his friends were always talking cars and he was actually pretty knowledgeable so I knew he would be blown away by it . Unfortunately , I knew a little about cars myself so I just couldn’t bring myself to put my first born child and rookie driver into an all wheel drive rocket so he got a lifted extended cab 4x 4 Ranger and was thrilled to get it despite a moment of tremendous disappointment when I told him how close he was to getting a Syclone. He got into plenty of trouble with the Ranger anyway which obviously didn’t make us happy but it did at least confirm that we made the right decision on the first car he didn’t get
This was my dream "car" when I was 15. I read that Ferrari comparison and salivated over this sleeper truck. 5 years later the dream became a reality when I bought a used syclone spotted at the local pre-owned car lot that usually only dealt in Porsche, Ferrari and other high end cars. I put 50k miles on my truck and sold it for $500 less than I paid. My only real complaint is that it was terribly unstable over 100 mph. Felt like a boat bobbing along. Good thing those speeds were a rare occasion. This truck was all about the take off!
I know the feeling. It is always more satisfying to blow the doors off luxury car owners that think their cars are fast. My little 05 WRX has supprised many of them.
I miss the days when road use pickups were high performance. When I was looking for a truck to buy last year the only models with performance packages were for off road
I used to carry out groceries in high school and one of the regulars had one of these. I always tried to be the one to carry out his groceries just so I could see the truck. Good memories.
For years at a local drag strip in the early 90’s the fastest full interior car was a 10.5 second Syclone. Fastest car driven to the track? Syclone. Fastest car with A/C? Syclone. It was hated by everyone, especially the GN guys trailering their gutted G bodies. I theorize the slower magazine results were by people who had absolutely no idea about the concept of the SyTy’s trademarked boost launch. Thanks for making the first video I’ve ever seen that didn’t require correction. You did your homework and it turned out great!
Even the 4.3 non turbo Sonoma were fast little trucks. I had a 1992 4.3 and it kept up with Mustang's not many beat me off line . These turbo 4.3 all wheel drive are beast. Beautiful
Jason, love the show; glad you left MotorTrend, considering they sold out to the big TV networks. MotorTrend has unfortunately been turned into another dumbed down generic TV channel geared more for soccer mom families than true enthusiasts. Really, 280 hp? It was crazy for it's time, and handling and stopping its still decent by today's standards, but I think even a dodge minivan makes 280 hp nowadays. Sounds like the person driving is scary tho lol.
@@ctdieselnut 130hp actually.
@@ctdieselnut companies back then always lied about theirs numbers as to avoid taxes it is quite known that all the cool vehicles made 100-130hp then what's on paper.
@@ctdieselnut Now do it with early 90s tires, early 90s suspension, early 90s weight, early 90s oversized turbo power delivery...
280 HP isnt super impressive, what made it fast was its 350 lb-ft of torque.
Bought mine as a leftover in '92. My local dealership had to go out of state to get it. MSRP $26,xxx. I paid $19,600. 13.6@96mph stock - Fast back in the day!
13.6 for under 20 grand and it's the best looking truck on the road.
I know you get this a lot but the quality you put into these videos is absolutely appreciated. If it's a team, thank you for the quality.
God the truck sounds like a horse during that driving segment. Especially on blowoff. I love it lmao
That's just the way I like them to sound! I just saw one in person a few days ago. There is something about them, while they were in motion. Thing was beautiful.
you're so right😂
Can't tell if that's genuine wastegate noise or if Jason is just making horse noises. Neither would surprise me.
Lol! I was thinking purring lion...
Was that filmed in San Jose, CA? It looked like Hicks Rd.
Ok oink

Roger that.
It's not tesla plaid mode throw you back in your seat..., but you will get the point no less.
worth $70k now my guy .....huge reGurtz
😂🤣 does she still have the wagon
The one time my mom took me car shopping, she was went into the dealer expecting to get a GMC Jimmy. We left with a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

@ David Billingslea not anymore. Someone ran a stop sign and I T-Boned them w it. Had my permit w my pops in the car. They legit pulled right out in front of me.
So I guess it’s probably best that she didn’t have a Typhoon or it would have been totaled.

It's always a better day when I see any of Jason's content pop up in my feed! Sy/Ty's were my dream back in the day!

Whenever I see a new episode with Jason I stop what I'm doing to watch it. I wonder if we'll ever see him review one of those C4 ZR1s.

@JasonCammisa I absolutely love these walkthroughs!!! Would love to see the "Phaeton" story
Me too - but it might have to wait a little. I've been a bit heavy on VWs the last few episodes (Porsche 924, Corrado, and Mk8 GTI.)
@@JasonCammisa Meh, never too much VW. Also cant help that they have made so many iconic, if not under-appreciated, masterpieces. Owned a forbidden fruit GP1 diesel while stationed in Germany, and it's still one of my all time favorite cars.

The Conquest looked cooler though.
My now 79 years old mum bought a purple then new JA Starion here in Australia back in the 80s.
The funny thing is it's the same body style as the s-10 but that gmc badge just always made it a bit classier.

The declared 280 hp was such an understatement!
“It has the one thing, that in 1991 meant performance more than anything else…”
Ahh, a turbo

Ok.
@Freedom Freedom Strange though, since Diesels were using them for quite some time. But maybe they still had trouble with the metallurgy when trying to adapt them for Gasoline engines. Like.. making them lighter made them less reliable, maybe?
