My mom is a Group B fanatic who just won't shut up about it. We have a white and yellow Renault 5 Turbo and a Martini Lancia Delta in the garage, both of which she probably loves more than our entire family combined. When she picked me up at school with one of them back in the day I was always embarrassed because these little boxes are loud af and she doesn't go easy on them. In hindsight that was pretty dope.

Got goosebumps. My parents had a dark blue 5 Turbo with 105 hp. Man, even my pedestrian mother could not hold back to spool up the turbo just for the sensation.

Love love love this video :D I'm a literal French 80s kid, and both the R5 Turbo and the 205 Turbo were my absolute dream cars. My dad used to take me spectate the rallies where we lived, so I got to see them in their natural element (I was just a toddler though, but my dad likes to bring up the anecdote that I would recognize the car by their sponsors, such as "R5 Daddy's Beer!" :D

My mother used to work for a Peugeot Talbot dealer and the owner had 2 205 dimma’s 1 was a 1.9 injection but the other was 1.9 turbo. The injection was in graphite grey and the turbo was in metallic blue. The boss asked my mother to go to the tax office (and take his car the dimma turbo) which was in Middlesbrough and that was 18 miles away from the garage and my mother set off back from the tax office at 2pm exactly and she was back at the garage at 2:14 and she said the car could of done it even faster.

IT still makes me smile to watch a R5Turbo. Back in the day (80´s) those were the stuff of our dreams. I used to go to downtown Cascais (were i live) and see the cars in person (Rally de Portugal - yes....that one were people were crazy and in front of cars): the R5, the 205, the FordRS200, the quattro, the Delta, and before that, the Escorts and etc. They made the ground shake, and the sound was....music, pure "power" music. Our passion for Rallys, and F1 was immense, and we all dreamed of driving those cars. Those were the days. Really. Ps: not to mention motorcycles and the 2 stroke 500´s.....

While I was too young to drive at the drive, my father had multiples over the years and, despite the "on-paper" specs, they were the perfect zippy in-city cars and they handled like a champ when pushed. You have to give it to Renault, they made some of the most awesomely bonkers cars ever. This one, the Clio V6, the Megane R26R and of course my favorite of all, the Espace F1. Ok that was just a one-off prototype, but it was actually fully functional and driveable. I guess will probably be another generation or two before we see another idea that could even approach its madness.

Weight was around 1,750lbs and it handled like a slot car. Mulholland Drive and Ortega highway where a blast in that car! I heavily regret selling that one.

Interesting. My 83 R5 Turbo 2 weighs 2,260 lb with all 26 gallons of fuel on board. I wonder where they cut 500 lb out of the car you mentioned which I assume is a 8221 Turbo Evo variant. There's not too many places to shave weight. Even the aluminum roof, hatch and doors of the 8221 cars are known to weigh just 30 lbs less than the steel bits they replaced. Even with aluminum suspension A arms, lexan windows and removed interior I struggled to see where 500 lb would be removed. The lightest Turbo I've heard of weighed a little over 2000 lbs. But the dream of a 1,750 lb R5 Turbo is a good one... I'd love to experience that car!

Good explaining about the engine placement, except...
The original R5 had the engine in front on a longitudinal orientation, that is correct, but it's rather a front-midship engine, as it's placed behind the front axle with the gearbox on front of it.
The trick was turning the engine around and mounting the gearbox from the Renault 30, which sitted on front of the axle.

Jason, you need to lift the hood on a regular Renault 5, the transaxle is in front of the engine, not behind it. The powertrain of the regular R5 is basically that of the R4, which like the early R5 had the shifter in the middle of the dash, controlling a long rod that goes over the engine and twiddles a quasi-shifter sticking out the top of the transmission.

    • @pilou827
      @pilou827 Год назад

Jason's demonstration of translating the R5's entire powertrain from the front to the rear is great but, therefore, wrong! It's really a pity!😊 If we stick to the R5, we can say that the powertrain has returned to 180°. But if we consider the Renault 30, from which the gearbox is derived, he is ultimately not completely wrong.😉

Excellent video.... But they DID turn the engine around. The FWD R5, based heavily on the 4L, had the motor behind the gearbox.... In the standard hatchback, the engine mass was behind the front axle.... So to mount to he motor ahead of the rear axle, it had to be turned round. Have a look under the bonnet/hood of a FWD series 1 R5 of you don't believe me.... They did not go the Audi way, they followed their own trusty 4L. Nonetheless, another excellent video, wonderfully delivered by someone who loves the topic. Chapeau!

This was my poster car as a teen. We had one importer on the west coast, Sun, who managed to get about a dozen into the country at the time. They really are impressive to see in full race mode. We had a local, Jerry Fink, who brought one to an autocross in New Jersey. It had all the glass removed and was clearly beyond stage 1 (160hp) tune. Jerry was also an excellent driver, and it was giggle inducing to watch the R5 Turbo scoot. We had a garage box at the end with a chicane to ensure you didn't come in it too hot. Jerry managed to find a way to come in super fast, pivot the car, and jump the car into the box. It wish I'd had a smart phone back then to film it.
The closest I came to driving this dream car was when we bought our Abarth 500 in 2013, which we still own. Obviously not the same thing at all, but a cheap practical car that I like to believe was in some ways inspired not just by the original 1000 Abarth, but also by Renault's bold move to pack lighting into a very cheap, very light hatch.

Sun international brought in a little over 100 cars into the US. Centennial Motors in Colorado brought in another 100. About 250 R5 turbos made it into the US in the '80s with the help of these importers. I used to drive from San Diego up to Sun to visit the shop and ogle over my ultimate dream car, the R5 Turbo. I finally made that dream come true in 2018 and now own an 83' R5 Turbo 2 in marine blue. Even by today's standards, it's incredibly engaging, interesting and oddly reliable. Parts are readily available and the car is easy to work on with great online support forums to assist. It's actually one of the more accessible, of the unicorn cars. (Lancia 037, Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, Lancia Delta S4, Audi Quattro Sport...etc..etc) And it can be had at reasonable money, relative to the other unicorn cars I just mentioned. Highly recommend living the dream!

Thank you so much for this episode. First of all you had in my tears as I was laughing so much...and I’m French! Second because I still remember the first one I saw in my city as a child, running from one street to the next to have a chance to hear the turbo kicking in at the next traffic light, thanks to heavy traffic at the time! So thank you so much, you made my day!! 👍👍👍

Really fun guy presenting a really fun car! The 1980 Renault LeCar was my first car. It died because the started went out and no one would touch it so I tried to change it myself; that didn’t go well. But, embarrassment in high school and all, I had a lot of fun with this car in two-tone beige!

I worked for a company that converted gray market cars to u.s. legal in SoCal in the early 80’s. Fun times driving Porsche’s, Ferrari’s, BMW’s. Then along comes this curious little French car. Fastest car I had ever driven 0 to 100 mph. Past 100 mph the car was a bit sketchy to keep in a lane on the freeway. Short wheelbase and a short lock to lock steering made you pay full attention. In a Lamborghini, Ferrari they were just starting to wake up after 100 mph. Most of the super cars in the 80’s would actually top out in the 170 range but manageable with handling. The R5 was built for rally racing only. Quick speed and turning. I do not remember going much over 120mph. Didn’t want to crash a customers car!

Cool video, well produced and a great leftfield car choice (even here in the UK). The heat issue in 5 Turbo's is one of the reason they are so scarce today. Many caught fire and burnt (melted) away faster than a Gitanes on a windy day.

A truly once in a lifetime experience! Basically a Group-B car for the street.
Same dealer also had a Audi Quattro Sport. I Drove that car as much as possible. The Audi was actually faster and handled better than the 911 of the same year.
