Those homologation specials from 80's and 90's are the coolest cars ever made in history!
I absolutely love this car. I'm British. My first car, at 17 years old. Was a Renault 5 GT TURBO. The insurance cost more than the car cost!! I had 3 over the years. Not the turbo 2 obviously. But makes me smile just seeing you feature thus car. I wish I had of kept one of mine! As in the 90's-2000's, the most I paid, was £5k. Now, a rough one is at least £10k here in the UK. I still may try and buy one again. Magic little cars. For how long they lasted. As usually about 2 months before you blow the 1.4 litre engine!!! Thanks for bringing back some happy memories.
I've thought this with some of my hot hatches but the cost to make them good and store them would of been more then the price increase, here for example more then £5,000 😔
Checkout the Renault Clio V6. No Turbo to blow & 2.5L in a low/stock state of tune. Awesome.
What the hell a renault 5 gt turbo as a first car? Quite different from the average fiesta or corsa
I had the 5 Gordini as my first car. 1k for the car 1k for the insurance, nuts
As a Frenchman I admire how much this man took care of his car... so many Turbo2s ended up in ditches or wrapped around trees in here
you are right.. young guys in turbo 5, in maritime twisting roads between marseille to monaco just got wrappped in wercks around trees... a short wheelbase r5 turbo 2 is a handful to handle...
on est deux ;)
true. but it's one of the very rare legal true rally car, so used as it. And finnished as it must be ^^
I really wish that happened in my country 😅
My dad had one and it got stolen on his mums bday such a shame I wanna get a gt turbo and name it after her and do it up nice
This is probably one of the best sounding car 4 cylinder engines i have ever heard
It kinda sounds like a porsche 550 with a turbo
Yes !! No need for artifical exhaust sounds made by engineers !!!
@MysterDaftGame Which sounds almost exactly like a subaru
My mom had a Renault alliance. That was our car until I was 10-12. 1985-92. Served us well. Lots of good memories
It's one of the most exciting cars I've ever driven. It feels completely different to any other car. It's not the power, or the speed, it's the sensations that this car produce. I own a Renault Super 5 GT Turbo from 1985 and driving the Turbo 2 was like meeting the bigger brother of mine.
The car that I wanted more than any other. I test drove one and will never forget the experience. I've never clicked so rapidly for any other car. This was special. Thank you Jay.
i dont care if you have a vette, or an 800HP mustang, if you think that this car is old crap, you are not a car guy...
I think its old crap but then again I like new fast cars
@@MrSalty-eg4zb :)
Fernanda so true...very cool car loved these since I first saw it
@@MrSalty-eg4zb I think that's what he said
@@MrSalty-eg4zb You need a ride in one - I guarantee you'll scream like a little kid......
This car was created when passion moved the car’s world. Amazing engine, line, sound...and tons of fun. I love it!!!
I had the standard R5 fo 7 years whilst working in Ethiopia from 1976 to 1983. We went all over the country on fishing trips etc. Into areas most people would only go in a 4x4. The little car never let us down! The early R5 followed on the toughness and reliability of the R4.
Sold Peugeot and Renault cars in San Antonio, Texas in the late 70s...the 205 GTI 1.9L was a real surprise! Loved it!
I can imagine it was for a U.S. customer. Fantastic car. We were spoiled in Europe. Hot hatch was our Muscle car era.
I saw one last week (well, I live in France so they're not that rare), but I wish I had one!
The 1.6 was the favourite of many. Extremely agile on British country roads.
Peugeot, Renault and Citroen cars in the States? This will look strange... A Twingo between the big V8´s xD I own a Clio Kitcar :)
TxCowpoke is that the center engine Group B spin off Citroen?
This "Renault R5 Turbo 2" and the "Peugeot 205 turbo 16" are both most legendary car here in France. 🇫🇷
Alpine 110, Alpine 310, Renault Gordini
Cars we never got in the good ole 🇺🇸
Bugatti cars are 10x more legendary.
@@basshead. boring
@@basshead. yeaaah. Like Harley. Very good looking, sounds great but after 10 miles of intense riding, you would be glad to have a tool box and some lubricants.
Real gold diggers!!🤣 that's pretty American standards.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Sorry buddy, European humour. Too loud for our test.😘
Costly and unreliable.🤣
Did my apprenticeship in 1984 on Renault.worked on these, great fun car and quick, finished working for Renault 15 years later, loved the 70s and 80s Renaults, simple to fix and reliable.
I love how Jay says that he wanted this car so much when he was a "kid" , but in reality, he was already 35.
😆
Why he never bought one after all those years?!?!°?
@@1983dmd I guess he needs to be able to keep those Duesenbergs and what have ya in his garage running, he has enough of his "childhood dream cars" in his collection already anyway, maybe it's totally fine for him to just show off and try one of these if he can for the channel/his show, but also he just can't have every car model ever made in his garage , it would be definitely too much to deal with.
I had a regular R5 and it was a blast to drive. This was the Holy Grail of R5’s. Sacré Bleu!
Just got home from family Easter Dinner and this is what i get to watch before i go to sleep. Life is great!
Wow it was great to see one of these in Jay Leno's garage. I owned a beautiful blue 1980 R5 Turbo Renault with a wild interior. It was an early homologation special S/N 0012 originally owned by Francois Castaing - head of Renault Sport. Lots of modifications, big intercooler, balanced and blueprinted engine with 22 lbs. of boost putting out 280 H.P. Wicked fast and a real head turner !!! I owned it for over 12 years and sold it to a guy in Japan to buy my Panoz Roadster.
This car is designed to be driven and enjoyed on small curvy roads not on these kind of streets
Yes and on Tiny roads To make différence Whith muscle cars. This car is like devil on road Even face to Porsche
Check out Davide Cironi's drive experience video...
Agree, they were build on Rally car ""intended" for the local "fortunate" enthusiast then the Quattro Audi was the first best.
There are not "true" rally cars in the US.
Too many strait/wide roads.
No offence to my US friends but to drive in the Alpes or any departement roads of Europe with one of "them"( Golf Gti, Renault2 turbo etc vintage...) and you'll understand and respect the engineering behind.
Today ... PSA are the best all terrain racing racing cars.
No, it was designed to drive on both types of roads, cause it was a street version! idiot
On my first trip ever to the US (California), I was extremely surprised to see one parked in the streets of Santa Cruz.
It was grey/silver.
I tried to explain to my friends what an incredible car it was but they were dubious.
In the evening, as we were driving back to the bay area, it just flew past us, possibly clocking close to 200 Kph!
You sure it wasnt a plate of spaghetti, and not a car?!
@@crimescene25 Haa haa
@Matthew On analog speedometer, they had Kph in smaller numbers in what ever car I was in.
I believe that there's a gentleman who lives in Glendale, CA, has one.
@Matthew-wn8oq A mile is equivalent to 1607 meters and it takes 1000 meters to make a kilometer. Therefore a car driven at 200 kph would roughly be running at an average speed of 124/125 mph. The engine of a rally car being in no way fitted for racing competition I find it hard to believe the car was actually dashing that fast !!!!!
Great video- I worked for a Renault agent in the UK from the early 1970's to the 1990's and remember these well, although they were pretty rare- I had 2 of the later R5 GT Turbos (1989) which were normal configuration front mounted, front wheel drive and loved them but they needed to be looked after properly to keep them reliable - Great days.
I grew up loving this car. There was a Brazilian guy lived on my street in Sevilla that owned one. I loved the sound.
This show has been wonderful to watch and learn from. It's like the Mr. Roger's Neigborhood of cars. So glad Jay was into this so we have something to watch now that the late night shows are hollow without you.
Haha you are being upvoted because that is a good analogy.
We had a Renault 5 back in the 90s. The color was kind of between yellow and orange. We drove it a lot in canyons and twisty mountain roads and it has a special nostalgic place in my memories. It is definitely a good looking car.
My ultimate dream car!
I called it Leno 5 when I was three years old.
The French went nuts on this one. Iconic street racer. My dream combination for short wheelbase supercharged commuter! Long admired!
@the resistance To give the turbo it's original and full name: turbo supercharger. All forced induction involving a compressor is supercharging.
The 80's were just a crazy time to be a motorsport enthusiast. 650hp fire breathing Groub B Rally Monsters with spectators touching cars as they passed by, 1500hp 4 cylinder BMW's in F1 etc. And cars like this.
And no chicanes on the Mulsanne straight at LeMans. The Group C cars were hitting 400km/h (250mph) in the late 80's. Seeing a video of the start of the 1988 LeMans is pure magic. Porsche 962, Jaguar XJR-9 and Sauber-Mercedes C9 cars racing down the straight and the drivers slipstreaming each other at speeds around 370-400km/h is quite a sight.
One thing I like about jay is there no crazy editing. No sponsor ship stuff like hello fresh audible all outher b.s.... jay needs more subs then he really has
2.4 million subs is a pretty huge number for a car channel tho.
Whats a "sponsor ship"? Is that like a cruise ship, but for Cialis?
Well, this is also not exactly his livelyhood where he needs sponsorship. This is just a hobby
He also never lets his guests end their sentences.
@ that comes with his age. Lol
I remember in the early 80's these were advertised in the back of a car magazine for $20k. I was a kid dreaming about my first car and this was the one I really wanted.
My father had the "civilized" version of this R5 back in 1984. He turned it over to the Renault dealership, still running perfectly, in exchange for a Clio plus a bag of money, back in 2001.
How does this series not have more millions of views? It's nuts.
Jay is always polite. Every car seems to have something about it that makes him smile.
Polite would be not leaning all over the car and scratching it up with buttons, rivets, watch, belt, etc. while talking about himself.
He ever review a Yugo ?
TurboDieselDan indeed and he never let somebody finish their sentences
@@pinut187 Baloney.
It brings back so much memory, you have no idea. I guess if you grew up in Europe during the 80s you know about this car. It was a real driver car, not that the quattro was not but that pocket rocket RWD and its turbo lag and turbo kick was unreal back then. So many people raced those on track and on tarmac rally. I'm not sure, but the 5s Turbo were probably assembled at Alpine, now Renault Sport in Dieppe in the North of France. They are now the guys behind the new A110 from what I've read.
Anyhow great stuff Jay, it was quite a trip down the memory lane for me. First time a car put a smile on face when I was a kid, I remember when the turbo kicked :). Few years ago I was cycling through Provence down in the South East of France, and had the pleasure to pass by one of the go-to-guy for that car and the other Alpines. That guy had a 5 Maxi Turbo, which is like 'THE' Turbo 5.
1.4 liter 200 hp.. that sounds like 2019 specs. Impressive stuff.
Especially in era, when performance turbocharged cars had usually max. 100Hp/l.
And mainstream turbocharged cars usually got 150-160HP out of 100-110 HP 2.0l engine.
Saab 900 Turbo, rocketship of rocketships had only something over 140HP in early 80's, before the 175HP engine with intercooler and 16v came.
That was standard, that 1.4l in racing mode could go up to 350hp in 1984!!!
@@nunomuchao BMW pushed it's 1.5l 4cyl to 1400HP+ in F1 ;)
That little 1.4 was good for over 300hp with the std block and crank. Needed you beaut pistons and rods and used as much water as petrol to keep from detonating to death though in Group B form. And the motor still used pushrods!
@Mäkirannantörmä Yep. Or 170 hp from a 1.0 EcoBoost.
1.4 l engine, 200HP... and all of that back in '85. The very definition of a hot hatchback. I always wanted one.
Nah, it's not a hot hatchback. Like all other Group B homologation specials, it's a sports car made to look like an hatchback everyone could buy. And that's its whole appeal.
It shares close to nothing with its namesake, just a couple of body stampings and interior bits.
There were a number of actual Renault 5 hot hatchbacks, like the Alpine or the GT Turbo.
bloodySunday77 FUCKEN crazy but absolutely awsome car
It's defo a hatchback and its fast so how is it not a hot hatch?
160bhp stock
The owner its not totally right about the car, the turbo one does have doors and most panels of aluminum, the turbo 2 its not as refine as the one. They kept the cost low and almost all of them are made from steel. The car does have 160bhp stock and it is an iconic rally legend
This was a dream car of mine when I was a kid, my older brother had a R5 GTX which had the bigger 1.7 engine. It still wasn't quite as fast as the Turbo but it flew due to it being so light! Great little cars!
Fast French cars of the 80's were superb. Renault 5 Turbo, 21 Turbo/Quadra, Citroen AX GT, BX 16 valve, 205 GTi, 309 Gti, 205 Rallye, to name but a few, and my own favourite the Peugeot 405 Mi16 (which I am also an owner of)
I smile and cry every time i see one of these..
Want, want, want.
"Bring a Trailer" never ceases to impress me as a brilliant name/brand. Genius
I had a LeCar in the 80's and it was so fun and amazing. 2' of snow and the car would just plow right through. Always drolled over the Turbo. These are so cool.
One of the coolest cars ever made.
In 1984 I actually owned an ultra-rare (Gray Market) R5 Turbo 1.
It had an ALL Aluminium body and was a fire-spitting dragon of a pocket rocket car.
I flew into Cocoa Beach Fla. from Atlanta GA and bought it from Sun International as they were going out of business and it was the last Turbo 1 they had out of the 21 they had imported into the US.
I paid the guy cash for the Renault on a Friday night and proceeded to take 1-75 North back to Georgia.
The little red race car was such a wild looking vehicle at the time, that 5 of the 7 times that I was stopped was not for speeding but the Troopers just wanted to get a look at the unique thing!
I was stopped a total 7 times before I made it back to Atlanta, 4 times by the Florida Highway Patrol Troopers and 3 times by The Georgia State Patrol Troopers all of them mesmerized by the little French Rocketship that shot fire out about 3 feet out of its tailpipe!
So much so, that of the 2 speeding tickets that I picked up...
the first one radar clocked me 125 and the second (using the old VASCAR system) at 107 MPH!
Now you don't mess with those "Good Ole" Boy Southern Troopers down there, so when the Blue bubble gums light up I just instantly pulled over and waited for them to catch up. And in BOTH instances (One Florida Trooper and the Georgia Trooper) the first thing out of their mouths was: "What the hell kind of car is this!?!"
With the most bewildered look on their faces to accompany the profound question! LOL
I drove it in and around Atlanta and Buckhead as my daily driver for 2 years before selling the hot hatch for a handsome chunk of change and bought a Porsche 928 with the proceeds.
To this very day, it still remains the biggest regret of my automotive passions to have let that brilliant R5 Turbo 1 go.
I've never seen another R5 Turbo 1 on the streets again and I've only seen one Turbo 2 in
36 years.
Thanks, Jay for showing us this wondering little French car that put a smile on your face and reminded me just how lucky I was to have actually owned one of the true gems of the automotive world.
I loved your story. Shame about the car. For a 928, too. Lol the 80s were an odd time
Mave Ricks maybe you should check out the clio rs v6
The turbo 1 was a far better car than the turbo2, the later used loads of production car parts and lost the expensive interior of the Turbo1
A 5 with an aluminium body? I don’t think so !
I used to work for ACI in SoCal. We did about a half-dozen Turbo I cars. What a blast! Easy to throw sideways into a turn and throttle steer. Those and the BMW M1s were my favorite to drive -- much more than the Countach or 512BB.
That engine actually was based on the one used in the R5 Alpine and was an evolution of the one previously used in the R8 in the 1960s. Its turbo installation was designed by Pierre Masset and Philippe Chasselut while the very concept of the car was due to Jean Terramorsi and his assistant Henry Lherm.
CaptHollister in French it is called Cinq(sank)
You know your stuff 😃
Actually the name of the original was the "R5 Gordini Turbo". They were mental fast little cars. Superseded in the late 80's with the "R5 GT Turbo". Another car you cannot get in the US.
@@dj_paultuk7052 yep i still call them Gordini haha
@@dj_paultuk7052 actually nope, the Gordini name was never used in France, only for the export markets of switzerland and UK , in France it has always been the R5 Turbo
the R5 Alpine was also called Gordini in the UK despite having no relation to Gordini, but the "Alpine" trademark was already licenced by Sunbeam over there
so no original R5 Gordini existed
Definitely at the top of the list of cars in my mind from the 1980s. I always think of the Renault R5 Turbo 2.
Not many cars of the era could keep up with one of these on a twisty rally stage
There are cars that you drive around and then there are cars that drive you around, especially modern cars. I remember this little fiery legend and the non turbo regular version. Used to be very popular in Europe back in the 80s and 90s.
I had one of these. Still have a GT turbo. Such a good fun little car. At high speed, tight corners it gets 3 wheeled but much fun..
This is the first time I see a French car in the US. It's a pleasure
@@patrickyell309 Yeah back in the 80s I worked on a couple of Le Cars at the garage I was employed at. They were absolute JUNK.
I really appreciate Jay's genuine love for French cars ; hello from Paris
How I wish Renault would have been able to join forces with BMW America. They would probably still be here today.
This channel does a great job of capturing the sound of these cars. Thanks for the great content.
Renault build many other cool cars : Alpine A110 & V6, 17, Espace, Espace.. all were ahead of their time !
Legend. In 30 years, everybody will still respect the owners of that king of car.
Growing up in the UK then moving to the US for 20+ yrs then moving to Mexico , I’ve seen my share of Renault 5 turbos but my favorite was the Renault 5 Gordini . Superb .
I worked at a gray market conversion company in SoCal in the 80’s. Drove a lot of fast cars. This was one of the fastest cars I had ever driven up to 100mph. After 100 it was hard to keep it in a lane on the freeway. Skateboard wheelbase and short lock to lock steering made you pay attention. Super fun to drive, but the turbo lag was hard to anticipate your shifts trying to not red line the motor.
Jay shows such interest and enthusiasm...great guy. Always generous towards his guests, a really superb host.
That car just looks sublime. Lovely lovely colour and fenders, LOVE them alloys on that car. This car would be PERFECT on the country roads here in the UK. Perfect
My First was a R5 Turbo, very fun car. 18 years and one of the best cars ever made.
Loved that car, still Miss it today.
When you know that some Mercedes models are equiped with Renault engines and that Renault is multiple times F1 world champion, you know what you're dealing with.
And the old Renault F1 engine is considered by all F1 drivers to be the most glorious sounding of all the F1 engines. And can play god save the queen with the exhaust!
Love the variety of cars on JAYS channel
I like how he does cars, 4x4s, and bikes. The Holy Trinity in my eyes. Jay even has stuff for the electric and diesel guys and even steam engines have a couple episodes!
I used to have a 2003 Clio V6 255. Jay should definitely try and get one of them on the show. Absolute hoot of a drive!
Agree. Jay is the best. Period.
Had a Renault 5 Alpine back in the 80s when I based in Germany. Same dashboard, seats and exterior color. Wish I still had it.
i like his show cause Jay is not an elitist car guy like everyone else.
like all the other car guys make me puke.
I have one of these in yellow, love it!!
1/32 scale
Farmer Lamb I have a 80’ R5 Alpine atmospheric, double webber 45 carbs, 280 cams, around 200 bhp, 1.4 engine that was used for r5 turbo and turbo 2

Jay Leno is a legend. Love these videos and reminds me of a time when late night television wasn’t propaganda.
Moose Knucks I miss those times.
I had a Renault 5 Alpine in the late 80's. Had lots of fun with it... 😎
Jay, you are the man....seriously. Your car collection and knowledge of automobiles are incredible.
Jay is a person who's talents and hard work has made him many millions of dollars, yet he's always maintained a very approachable, likeable demeanor. To have the resources to buy anything (and everything!) he likes, yet not seem pretentious is a very rare quality. With the beginning of his eighth decade just ahead, I wish him continued good health and happiness!
Nothing reminds me more of my childhood than seeing Turbo in giant letters along the side of a car.
Magnificent car, I had a R5 Gordini normally aspirated, I loved that car, just like a road going go-kart!
I'm french. This legendary car is one of the greatest french cars of all time
In 2022, this is STILL cool AF! This can't be said about most anything made in the 80's.
The early econo-box R5's, with the engine in the front, were mid-engined too, as the whole engine was behind the front axle center-line.
Thanks Renault for building this car! It led to owning 2 Omni GLH Turbo cars, still have one with 400hp.

Jay wasn't the only one craving this car in 1985. All my friends thought I was crazy for my love of the R5. He's closer to one than I've ever been. Jealous.
Great old girl.
Listening with earphones, that engine noise gave me goosebumps....
First car was an 83 R5 and my father had a R10, R12 an earlier R5 plus later an alliance GTA....later on I owned two different R17 Gordinis and an A310 Alpine 1977 but always dreamt of the R5 Turbo.....absolutely love it
I'd love an A310. My first car was an 85 5 le car 2. I cut holes in the front bumper and fitted yellow fog lamps. Also put the turbo style stripe up the sides. A friend had mk1 fwd gordini turbo. He tried to sell it to me for 1k pounds. Still have fond memories of that car, wish I had bought it.
Used to have to replace the starter in that r5 at least once a year !! Sure was fun to drive though
I was on holiday in Turkey about 10 years ago and my hire car was a Dacia produced R12, I couldn't believe my eyes lol
Ah the vehicles of my youth. Love these mad 80s cars.
I love R5 Turbos, there were some misinformation in the video though.
The original Turbo, (Turbo 1) is lower volume, aluminum panels with a crazy interior. This Turbo 2 were built in more examples. It was steel panels and the same interior as the fwd Alpine turbos, which the engine is an upgraded version of. The first 400 cars of the Turbo 1 were built to homologate the car for Group 4 rallying in 1980. When group B started a few years later, Renault built the complying R5 Maxi Turbo with improvments. They competed with it in Group B 1985. Look up "R5 turbo 1 interior" on Google :)
At last, scrolling through the comments to see if somebody had put them straight on the history of the car. Bravo. Saved me a job ;)
Boom! Spot on! This tosspot’s been conned into believing it’s a homologation special when it certainly isn’t. Still a brilliant car, just not the big Alfred he was spouting on about in the video.
Wow you weren't kidding about that interior! I love it. The steering wheel looks like some weird two spoke wheels.
@Charlie Sthill No, it was the R5 Alpine (Gordini in the UK) Turbo or the Supercinq GT Turbo. All R5 (1, 2, Maxi) Turbo were central engine/RWD.
I find it amazing that someone who owns one of these things (especially given how valuable they are now) knows so little about them. Had to scroll too far to find someone that would correct him. Also, another thing he was wrong on; he said that it was sohc, it's actually a pushrod motor.
Drove one of these in Austin for a couple of years. Most fun I ever had on four wheels
I was stationed in Germany 1986-89. Got to see a couple of these cruising around. Sweet ride!
This is one of those magic, precious, most iconic cars ever created. One that us, having grown up in Europe at times when Walter Röhrl and Michelle Mouton had reached god like status, made us drool mouth open in front of our family crt, and just could not believe what was shown to us.
This, and the Lancias, the Audis, the Fords of that 80s Rallye world are so much more worth to me than any other boulevard cruisin' piece of snobbism.
This is as raw and ill as it gets.
Today I would not get into drooling over this anymore, I am proud to say not to be ashamed shedding a tear or more even in public.
Don't forget "Jeannot" Ragnotti. Ken Block has nothing on him.
RENAULT did a crazier car than this R5 Turbo: look at the Clio V6. A V6 engine on a tiny car. The Clio is the model which replaced the R5, it's now the city car of Renault. The Clio V6 was on the 2nd generation of Clio. The 3, the 4 and now the 5 have "RENAULT SPORT" versions that are pretty fun and effective.
Moment mal, Du vergisst hier komplett die Opel, Kadett C und Ascona A und B, denn die haben Walter Röhrl erst gross gemacht.
To this day, Michelle Mouton spanking all the boys at Pikes Peak is one of the greatest sporting events ever in my book.
And the beauty of it is Michelle wasn't just keeping up with the boys in group "B". She was a genuine monster behind the wheel.
What an era that was for motorsports!!

Just as I am reading your reply right now, I somehow feel that urgent need again to watch some of her stints again, even though the quality of most of the video of those cannot at all live up to the ultimate expertise she delivered when she was active in the sport.
I am a huge admirer of Walther Röhrl, also. And that is not at all because of me being german.
I have grown up on watching European Rallye Sports on german TV, every single Sunday afternoon, since I was about six years old, which was in 1980.
When Michelle was on, it was like everything began to glow and levitate. There was true magic delivered by her, just like I myself only see at the same level with only one other person in sports, at least during my lifetime, and that is Michael Jordan.
MJ I had the pleasure to see live, at Boston Garden in 1991, vs. the Celtics.
Sadly, I never had a chance to see Michelle live.
But both are definetely the only ones I ever saw in sports, that seem to play by their self defined laws of physics, and still being able to use those to their full advantage, and not overblowing it.
I love when jay review a car, he watch it like he know nothing and he try to understand everything he saw
true passion
This is one of my favorite euro classic cars. Everything about it is nearly perfect for its era.
Actually saw one of these in Orange County CA back in the 80s. Very cool looking little car
Detroit suburbs some guy had one back int he 80's, I spotted it from the fender flare and every time I went by there I would look for it sitting on his driveway.
Damn you Randy! You take at least an hour of every single one of my days.
My uncle had one of these in portugal till it was stolen. He loved it and misses it.
Azar não roubar um destes nos anos 80 não era difícil.
Jay! You were not a kid in 1985.
He would have been 35, a kid at heart still.
yes i was thinking about this too!! took the words out of my nostril!
Jay is a kid in 2019. Just look at all his toys.
@@the_original_Bilb_Ono ''Jay R Us''
Wasn't he talking about the BMW 2002? 🤔
Jay still makes Quality Content I watch in the bedroom.
Was the "bedroom" part necessary?
More like the bathroom
My uncle owns one here in Virginia, best car in his collection from my opinion. Identical to this one but quite a bit of performance upgrades.
Me and my friends used to race these threw country lanes at night. Ohhh the good old days.
One of my favorite 80s cars, I've ALWAYS wanted one of those, they pop up now and then, but they are difficult to find
La sonrrisa de Jay cuando entra el turbo lo dice todo. 😁
One of my favorite cars ever. Love ya Jay
I had tickets to the Renault Festival at Donington Park a few years ago, I spent most of the day looking around these old 5 Turbo's - I've never seen so many in one place. They also did the Renault 5 GT Turbo and the Gordini which were front wheel drive, mate of mine still has a really nice GT in dark blue. Great little cars.
Born and raised in L.A. this has been my dream car since I first saw it on car mags in ‘84. I actually had a Le Car (the production car this was modified from) in rag top form.
No power at all but fun to drive. Parking was never a problem. Weaving in and out of traffic was too easy. Really wish I could have had one of these though.
Next, the 205 GTI 1.9L. I know where there is one in Texas if you want to do an episode.
another european legend
205 are fast
Peugeot 205gtis were everywhere in europe.
This renault is rare.
There also is a clio inspired by this
205 T16 is the one for Jay to drool over
@@alphatrion100 Correction: Renault 5 everywhere, Renault 5 GT Turbo VERY very rare, like a exquisite Ferrari.
r5 turbo has been a dream car for me ever since I saw it on the Bill Watrous & Carl Fontana album cover
I'm surprised no one mentioned Sun International in Redondo Beach. They imported and gray market certified these cars in the early 1990. I test drove one. There was never a ONE car rule. By the way, I met Bill Watrous at Rob Stewart's repair shop. Rob straightened the slide of Bill's Mt. Vernon Bach. It seems Bill was cleaning the horn in a hotel room, extended the slide and pointed it at the ceiling light. He was looking for a small dent on the slide. Unfortunately, the ceiling light had a fan which grabbed the outer slide and spun it round the room a couple of time before dropping it on the floor.
@@carrollshelby8690 wow, that's a great story! A good friend of mine had a similar incident with his ceiling fan in his apartment. What was bill like in person?
@@5705HU Bill was pretty normal, unassuming. Obviously a monster player but my favorite trombonist was Urbie Green. I should have never sold my Martin Urbie Green Tenor. I could never really get into Bill's quiet "noodling" on the horn.
next step: review a Clio V6 when they become legal!
Clio V6 is definitely the successor to the R5 Turbo2. Ph2 Versions are better with the engine worked on by Porsche to increase the BHP.
Its called Clio V6 Williams, for the record.
THERE IS NO TURBO ON (CLIO V6) THAT??????????
@@ElGuatequeroHa, sorry but the Clio Williams, and the Clio V6 are nothing to do with each other. Williams had ZERO input into the Clio V6, it was TWR.
@@dj_paultuk7052 You are right, the Clio Williams its more like a "normal" front engine car 2.0. They made 2500 to homologate it to rally (groups N and A) but it was so succesfull that they ended making almost 12.000. And for the record, Williams put the name on it and thats all, its engineered entirely by Renault.
Revisiting this video, I was highly impressed once again.
Jay loves interesting, intelligent vehicles -- and this Model is exactly that.
Years ago, driving at dawn through Route 95 North nearby Boston, I was overtaken by a car like that.
I was driving above speed limit -- and yet this amazing Car was doing around 140m/h.
I was truly impressed !
A few months later, I managed to drive one of these in Germany.
No speed limits, and I reached an insane, demented top speed.
Driving a few days later through a winding country Road, I was able to get the Rally feeling -- the ultimate purpose of these amazing cars.
I had a 90 plate R5 Turbo in black when I was in my 20's and it was so much fun when the turbo spooled up! In the UK during the 90's every 20 odd year old aspired to have a car like the the R5 Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTI, or maybe the Vauxhall Astra GTE.
My mother had a standard Renault 5 TL for years. 957cc engine in the front. Not fast but not actually slow either and very efficient. She drove it for a few years. I really liked that car, a lot bigger on the inside than the outside, felt like a tardis :)
YESSS THE BADDEST LITTLE FRENCH CAR IN RALLY ♥
205 T16?
disquo a Peugeot.
Alpine A110 ! But they are all great , the R5 and 205 as well .
These cars were all good, light, nimble
The A110 was getting old tho
Have to agree, 205 t16 was the best, I have a 205 gti, amazing little car
Pocket Rocket cars are always so much FUN! Thanks for sharing Jay!
Bob Dillahunty thats why he left a comment troll
France represented here. I absolutely love the design of this car. My parents had a basic R5 around 1982 so maybe I'm biased but... Can't wait for the retrofuturist electric version that Renault should produce soon.
I got to seen one of these in the mid 80’s at a concourse show and fell in love with it. Never have seen one IRL since.
