Just goes to show you the power of the 429 … I had a ‘69 Marquis429-4v, 11-1 compression in an almost 5000 pound car that beat most anything on the street in the ‘80s. I remember racing a Buick GS 400 4 speed and running neck and neck for a long stretch. We got to the next traffic light and he couldn’t believe this Marquis could run with him…
This is a beauty. Yeah it requires 750 horsepower to accelerate this much mass to that speed in that distance. The 127 says it all in my book. I used to own this car years ago, I sold it to Mike. It was nothing like this. Mike taught me alot about the 385 Ford many years ago. Man he did an incredible job with this thing, the video of the run demonstrates that. Amazing job.
I could be wrong, but I'd think that 750hp should move this car faster. I'm guessing he's having some serious traction issues. If he ran slicks he'd probably be running 10s
@@LoneWrencher Nice! That's a rare find. My Caliente had the 289 2bbl a C4 and an 8 inch. I still have the 289 and C4 "Merc-o-Matic" if I ever want to make it original again.
Beautiful Cyclone! I had a 70 Torino Cobra 429SCJ, Ram Air, 4:11 rear with top loader 4 speed on the street from 1978-79 to 1990 when I sold it. Still kicking myself for letting it go. Bought it for $600. Engine was apart in boxes and trans and interior were out of car. Took about 9 months to rebuild the 429SCJ, do body and paint and get all parts back on. Painted it lacquer B8217LM autumn maple firemist metallic which was a 1980 olds color. Looked like the same red Cobra peaking around the corner at 8:42. Good Luck with it and DON'T sell it 😀 Currently driving a 2021 Mustang GT/CS with lots of HP and torque but just doesn't have that classic pedigree.
Wow, that is impressive. I love my 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler 429cj 4spd. It is nothing like this one. He is right, it is hard to find parts for it. Thanks for showing the Merc Cyclone a little love. We don't get a lot of press.
I absolutely love these cars. My second car as a kid was a 69 MACH 1 - 428 CJ and fell in love with the fast Fords. This Cyclone body was the one that the Woods Brothers ran so successfully.
It's an awesome car. I think the weight of these out of the factory was around 4200 lbs. They're something you don't see very often. It's too bad Mercury didn't produce more of these!
We special ordered ours. Gun metal blue, 429 cobra, sway bars and no power steering. To add to the fun we had a St Bernard who rode in the back seat. Loved that car
Nice car! I have a 1966 Cyclone GT that had been sitting in my barn since 1981. It has just over 49,000 miles on it. Those are actual miles. After watching this video , it makes me want to get the car out of storage and back on the road
You didn’t already want to get it out and going down the road? This was the final straw that gets you working on it. That’s awesome. Guilty of not working on my own classic.
When I was 12 my dad bought a new 1970 Cyclone GT with a 429 auto. Orange with the lower black. In 72 he bought Cougar XR7 with a 351CJ. I grew up with fast Fords. I miss those days. The two year run on the gun site grills were so bold and distinct and my favorite. Even though the Ford’s couldn’t quite keep up with the Chev’s and the Mopar’s they will always be my favorite 🤩
One of my favorite Fords of all time! 429 definitely my favorite engine. My 1at car was a 2 door 70 Thunderbird with the regular 429 Thunderjet 4bbl in it. It looks very similar to these Cyclones. I love the "beak"!
A autobody guy I used to know up here in Canada had a 70 Spoiler like this in Grabber Green. 4 speed car with the factory Quadrajet carburetor. Only had 30 000 original miles on it. He was the original owner. It had the Mercury chrome dogdish hubcap/beauty rings wheels from the factory, not the Magnum 500's. He eventually sold the car around the year 2000. I bet he's kicking himself for selling that car now! What a head turner that car was!
when I was Chevy guy, I use to blow a lot of cars off with my "70 Z28. The big Dodges took it hard. BUT I remember running up against a bone stock Cyclone of this vintage... And he ate my lunch. Give me a whole new respect for Fords

I love that gunsight grill, very tough menacing looking. Had a friend in high school circa 1979 that had that exact Competition blue 429 SCJ Cyclone Spoiler 4 speed. He had fat tires on deep dish solid drag Centerline riveted wheels in rear with the matching rims in front. He was the tire frier king of the parking lot. Badass looking car.

I cut my teeth in drag racing driving a 1970 and a 1971 Torino Cobra Jets. My brother bought one brand new and let me drive it. Pure stock back in 1970 it ran low 14 second 1/4 miles at about 104. These cars are fun to drive and he does a nice job driving. 127 MPH is definitely enough power to run mid 10’s with drag slicks and more rear end gear. Grabber blue. I had a 1970 Boss 302 that color.
Thanks Evan. You said you would post this video. It made my morning whole lot better seeing that Cyclone pulled those front wheels. I would assume the rest of the exhaust is less restrictive he didn’t mention. Also the manual brakes & no power steering is definitely tricks of the trade.
