I'm not a Pentecostal but I had the pleasure of attending an AFC service at their 'mother church' in Portland. It was a beautiful service and the music was amazing.
I have watched a number of their videos on YT, and you are right, the music is amazing...they have a large organ, a piano, a full orchestra which includes a harpist, and a large choir. Plus, their sermons are very Christ-centered. i haven't watched all of their videos by any means, but I appreciate the beautiful services I have watched. I have noticed much of their congregational singing is hymns, some of which I have not heard sung in years.
Once, at least ONCE to witness a recording of Tongues interpreted into an actual language would be phenomenal. Alas - this hasn’t occurred although Pentecostal meetings are recorded world wide every day yet not ONE instance of Tongues and interpretation has occurred. Not once. Ask yourself why.
Have you ever been to a camp meeting there? As a child my family would always meet up there. My older brother is still a minister for that church. 52nd and Duke is a very nice area of Portland.
I have personally heard a teenage girl who said she knew no Spanish at all pray in fluent Spanish. At the same meeting I heard a person praying in fluent German, which I recognized although my German was nowhere near as fluent to translate. Same meeting an older lady standing next to me was praying in a beautiful, fluent tongue that I didn’t recognize. When she finished praying, her husband who was a seminary professor said, “That was a beautiful prayer, dear- would you like to know what you said?” She said, “ How do you know what I said? “ He answered, “Because you were praying in fluent Ancient Greek, and that’s what I teach!” She did not know Greek, much less Ancient Greek, but the translation he gave was indeed beautiful. A great book to read is “They Speak With Other Tongues” by John and Elizabeth Sherrill, who started out with scepticism as they researched the tongues phenomenon in the 1960’s.
Bobby my brother, does it not seem odd that a wife doesn't know what her husband teaches at the University? I'm not saying she should know what language she was speaking, just that she should know that he is a Professor of Ancient Greek. I know that my Grandfather was a professor of Law
@@bonniemoerdyk9809 The woman had no idea what language she was speaking, as she had never spoken it before. When you are baptized in the Spirit, you speak in a tongue unknown to you. The German speaker did not know German. The young girl praying that beautiful Spanish prayer did not know any Spanish. I do not understand my own tongue, although at times the Holy Spirit has given me the translation to share. The genuine thing is of God, but there are certainly frauds, many frauds.
@@bonniemoerdyk9809 If her husband had prayed in Ancient Greek it would not have been an unknown tongue, because he knew that language. She had no idea what language she was speaking in, which made it an unknown tongue for her. If your husband taught advanced math in a college, would that mean that you understood advanced math? I don’t think so. I think you should look for the delightful book by John and Elizabeth Sherrill, They Speak With Other Tongues. Amazon probably has some used copies- it’s a great read.
@@BobbychildreeWell, most hold that the baptism in the spirit is not always evidenced by tongues, as Paul says "not all will speak in tongues", regardless I've heard of very similar occurrences, not in prayer, but In preaching missions.
@@SeanWinters Yes, I’m aware of that. But I tend to prefer the teachings of Dr. Derek Prince from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He taught that there are public tongues- a gift to others in the assembly, and private tongues- the least of the gifts, for the personal edification of the believer. If one believes that there are believers who need no personal edification from the Holy Spirit, I suppose they would believe that not all are promised this least of gifts. On the other hand, if one should simply refuse the least of the gifts, perhaps the Holy Spirit might simply withhold the “ more excellent gifts.” The study of the gifts of the Spirit in Romans and 1 Corinthians, and probably other places, is always interesting. A bit confusing to those who are Cessationists, but always interesting. I personally think the latter rain of Joel’s prophecy started in the middle of last century, but Satan was able to sabotage it rather thoroughly with all his counterfeits. I have seen way too many counterfeits in my life, and seem to be seeing even more today. My heart has always longed for that true fellowship of the Holy Spirit, but I don’t think I have seen it except perhaps in passing, sadly. Too much flesh, too many counterfeits! May you find it, my brother!

When using the term "Apostolic Faith Church" this can also be used to describe some churches in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW), Church of our Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC), etc. The differences are significant, such as baptism is Jesus name (Acts 2:38), and rejection of the Trinity, this should help explain some of the comments 😅

Good question. What does the Bible tell us? Well, every time we see an angel speaking it knows the language of the person it is talking to. So biblically, it appears that the "tongue of angels" is speaking the language of the hearer, whoever they are. This also corresponds with Pentecost, where every man hear what was said in his own language. Of course, if there is a Biblically supported different view, it's worth considering too.

I'm assuming this is a joke on your part but, just in case it isn't, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement is the state-sanctioned Government-controlled church under the Chinese Communist Party in mainland China.
Acts 2 is the ONLY one example out of several others where the speaking in tongues were languages understood by the observers. In Acts 8, 10, and 19 the speaking in tongues is not said to have been understood by the observers.
There are clearly three types of tongues mentioned in Scripture, Acts chapter 2 where they spoke in another language, two; Paul talking about his private prayer language and three in group worship with another person interpreting.
One type. Pentecostals invent other types to reflect their practice of not using real languages: For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. That doesn't mean tongues is for prayer. Just the opposite.
@@jamesreed5678 In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul lays out the phanerosis of the Spirit, the manifestations of his presence. He ends the chapter by telling us to "earnestly desire the best gifts, then spends chapter 13 telling us that none of it matters if we don't walk in agape,. covenant love. Then he opens chapter 14 up by saying... "Follow after covenant love, and desire pneumatikos, but especially that you might prophesy. For he who speaks in tongues doesn't speak to men, but to God, because no man understands him; however, in the Spirit he speaks mysteries" I wrote verse 2 as an overview of how the 32 translations I read it in this morning say it. Oddly enough, it means exactly the same thing if you research it in Greek. When someone is speaking in tongues, no one understands it but God. So this begs the question... How did men from 14 regions all hear the disciples speaking the wonderful works of God in their native tongues? This requires actual thought on the situation, for there are two camps as to who was in the upper room that Pentecost day. Some say only the Twelve were there. If that's true, then the people of 14 regions, each with their own native tongue, heard 12 men speak exclusively in their language... Even Common Core math can't make 12=14. Then there's those who say the 120 disciples that were mentioned in Acts 1:15 were there, which means that the 3,000 + men that came to see what had happened and subsequently heard God's works spoken clearly in their language were able to discern their particular language from 120 or so people shouting ecstatic utterances all at once. Either way it took a miracle of hearing from God to make them able to hear the Gospel in their language, the first instance of Interpretation of Tongues in Acts. Some may say that's malarkey, but we're talking about the God who was able to make the footsteps of four hungry lepers sound like Doom's Own Army to the Syrians besieging Samaria. (2 Kings 7:3-7) God said through Paul that NO MAN understands when a believer speaks in tongues. Only Holy Ghost granting a manifestation of Interpretation of Tongues makes it possible. That's what has happened every time from Pentecost to today. Paul mentioned this singular truth, that no man understands tongues, even the speaker, without Interpretation of Tongues, several times in 1 Corinthians 14. The Bible means what it says. This chapter is no different. Did you notice that Paul and Jude agree that speaking in tongues builds us up in our faith? (1 Cor 14:4; Jude 20) This agrees with Isaiah 28:11-12 - tongues is the Rest that God gave us in Christ, a way for us to be refreshed from above as we speak with "stammering lips and another tongue". How is a "sign to unbelievers"? Through my wonderful Father having Holy Ghost interpret what those speaking in tongues are saying to unbelievers who may hear. If he didn't do that, as Paul said, they would think we're "off our meds".

I read 1 Corinthians 14:2 in 32 translations this morning and also studied the Greek to be sure - when someone speaks in tongues, no one understands what is said but God. That means the 3,000+ men who heard either 12 or 120 people speaking in ecstatic utterances by the Spirit in such a manner as to be considered drunk... And still had each listener hear the magnificent works of God in their native tongues... Could only do it through God granting each of them the manifestation of Interpretation of Tongues. So is it in every instance where someone speaks in tongues and those listening hear a known language.
For working in this area of denominational history, pick up a copy of Vinson Synan's (Pentecostal historian) original edition of The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement in the United States, Eerdmans, 1971. It's both scholarly and fair...which was a rarity for a historical account. (I don't understand why you, Joshua, select obscure, smaller denominations rather than a broader sweep of denominational history. 🤔)

It has a presence world wide through its regional and country-specific sub-divisions. The Foursquare Church is another Finished Work Pentecostal denomination that grew out of the Assemblies of God and has a larger presence on the West Coast of the United States. Calvary Chapel is a broadly Evangelical non-Pentecostal Charismatic denomination that grew out of the Pentecostal denomination known as the Foursquare Church, although it has historical Pentecostal origins, it is no longer Pentecostal due to its opposition to the Initial Evidence doctrine. It has a large presence in the U.S. West Coast and is well known for their missionary work among the Hippies, anti-war movement, and borderline-irreligious nominal Christians disaffected by Mainline Protestants and Fundamentalists during the Cold War, Vietnam War, and the 20th Century. The others though aren’t as well known.
I grew up in the Apostolic assemblis in the faith of christ Jesus based in Los Angeles California mostly latino bilingual Spanish and English oneness, baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and receive the gift of the holy ghost with the evidence of speaking in new tongues then continue in the word of God

I'm always a bit iffy when a church is KJV only. And even though I'm a Creationist for personal reasons, I don't like it when a denomination denies scientific evidence, under the pretense that it somehow is a denial of God.

Wow. You do your homework. Nicely edited and professionally explained! Thanks. As a Roman Catholic, I am always interested in others' versions of their walk in Faith. Unhappily, they always miss the Real Presence of Christ in the Breaking of the Bread. Don't know why; but, they all do.
Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” Upon hearing these words, many of Jesus’ followers said, “This is a hard teaching” (verse 60), and many of them actually stopped following Him that day (verse 66). Jesus’ graphic imagery about eating His flesh and drinking His blood is indeed puzzling at first. Context will help us understand what He is saying. As we consider everything that Jesus said and did in John 6, the meaning of His words becomes clearer. Earlier in the chapter, Jesus fed the 5,000 (John 6:1-13). The next day, the same multitudes continued to follow Him, seeking another meal. Jesus pointed out their short-sightedness: they were only seeking physical bread, but there was something more important: “Food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (verse 27). At this point, Jesus attempts to turn their perspective away from physical sustenance to their true need, which was spiritual. This contrast between physical food and spiritual food sets the stage for Jesus’ statement that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Jesus explains that it is not physical bread that the world needs, but spiritual bread. Jesus three times identifies Himself as that spiritual bread (John 6:35, 48, 51). And twice He emphasizes faith (a spiritual action) as the key to salvation: “My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life” (verse 40); and “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life” (verse 47). Jesus then compares and contrasts Himself to the manna that Israel had eaten in the time of Moses: “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die” (John 6:49-50). Like manna, Jesus came down from heaven; and, like manna, Jesus gives life. Unlike manna, the life Jesus gives lasts for eternity (verse 58). In this way, Jesus is greater than Moses (see Hebrews 3:3). Having established His metaphor (and the fact that He is speaking of faith in Him), Jesus presses the symbolism even further: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh. . . . I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. . . . My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. . . . Anyone who feeds on me will live because of me” (John 6:51-56, NLT). To prevent being misconstrued, Jesus specifies that He has been speaking metaphorically: “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). Those who misunderstood Jesus and were offended by His talk about eating His flesh and drinking His blood were stuck in a physical mindset, ignoring the things of the Spirit. They were concerned with getting another physical meal, so Jesus uses the realm of the physical to teach a vital spiritual truth. Those who couldn’t make the jump from the physical to the spiritual turned their backs on Jesus and walked away (verse 66). At the Last Supper, Jesus gives a similar message and one that complements His words in John 6-when the disciples gather to break bread and drink the cup, they “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). In fact, Jesus said that the bread broken at the table is His body, and the cup they drink is the new covenant in His blood, shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:26-28). Their act of eating and drinking was to be a symbol of their faith in Christ. Just as physical food gives earthly life, Christ’s sacrifice on the cross gives heavenly life. Some people believe that the bread and wine of communion are somehow transformed into Jesus’ actual flesh and blood, or that Jesus somehow imbues these substances with His real presence. These ideas, called transubstantiation (professed by the Catholic and Orthodox churches) and consubstantiation (held by Lutherans), ignore Jesus’ statement that “the flesh counts for nothing” (John 6:63). The majority of Protestants understand that Jesus was speaking metaphorically about His flesh and blood and hold that the bread and wine are symbolic of the spiritual bond created with Christ through faith. In the wilderness testing, the devil tempts Jesus with bread, and Jesus answers, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3). The implication is that the bread is God’s Word and that is what sustains us. Jesus is called the Word of God who came to earth and was made flesh (John 1:14). The Word of God is also the Bread of Life (John 6:48). The book of Hebrews references the way that God uses the physical things of this earth as a way to help us understand and apply spiritual truth. Hebrews 8:5 says that some tangible things are “a copy and shadow of what is in heaven,” and that chapter explains how the Old Covenant, so concerned with physical rites and ceremonies, was replaced by the New Covenant in which God’s laws are written on our hearts (verse 10; cf. Jeremiah 31:33). Hebrews 9:1-2 says, “The first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place.” According to Hebrews 8:5, the consecrated bread, or the “bread of the Presence,” was a physical representation of a spiritual concept, namely, the actual presence of God being continually with us today. The physical tent of meeting has been replaced by a spiritual temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16), and the physical bread of the Presence has become the spiritual bread that abides within us through the Holy Spirit. When Jesus said we must “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood” (John 6:53), He spoke, as He often did, in parabolic terms. We must receive Him by faith (John 1:12). “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). We understand that we need physical food and drink; Jesus wants us to understand that we also need spiritual food and drink-and that is what His sacrifice provides.
Ummm.... let's review. Correct me if I'm wrong. Catholics proclaim the bread and wine used for Communion, to "change" from bread and wine by the Church's own power when it is presented...to then be actually Christ's blood and flesh ( "Transubstantiation", correct?). Very similar, it seems from the Lutheran belief that the bread and wine being presented *IS* the body and blood of Christ (Luke 22:19-20... Jesus says the bread IS is body...and the wine IS his blood). The only difference is the biblical literal translation used by Lutherans (*IS* means "*IS, it doesn't mean to them "represents")....wheras the Catholics come to same end-game, by the church's power to CHANGE the bread and wine to blood and body. In the end....it's the same thing being presented to the believer. I think Lutheran and Catholics are the only 2 denominations claiming "Real Presence" that you refer to.
WHAT!?!? Churches observe Christmas, Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter!?!?? Is that it? What happened to Pentecost? ?!?! They’ve forgotten the roots of their own movement!
Given that there are probably thousands of languages that have died out, how would one determine that some tongue is just jibberish? Or how would one know the interpretation of that tongue was just made up? Also, what are "Heavenly languages?"
And if you had a valid interpretation and it were real speech a linguist could transcribe the speech in the lost language and start working out the vocabulary and grammar. Obviously this won't work on nonsense and that is how you would know.
The speaking in " tongues" in Acts ch.2 and 1Corinthians is actually one spiritual language spoken by more than one believer at a time. In Acts ch.2 the miracle for the men in the crowd wasn't that the believers were all speaking in their native languages. It was all the believers speaking in one spiritual language and those in the crowd Hearing what they were saying in their individual native languages. The Word alerts us to the fact by repeating that the men were wondered three times how they were hearing what the believers were saying in their native languages. This is a sign unto unbelievers, the men in the crowd.
We need a Pentecostal tongue talking holy rolling fire baptized revival to sweep across this nation please set aside time each day to pray specifically for that Pentecostal churches have lost their power and fire they have all become powerless and lukewarm it seems like if you are modern Pentecostal then you probably don't know what a real move of God looks like please pray for Holy Ghost revival
I'm curious whether the "altar call" brings them up to an _actual altar,_ or if they strongly deny that the table used in the sanctuary is an _altar,_ because they deny the sacrificial nature of Holy Communion? I'm also curious how often the spontaneous speaking in other known languages occurs. That would seem to be an objectively testable thing, unlike "prayer language" glossolalia.
in an old pentecostal church i went to as a child as well as a baptist church i went to later on, it means to go up to the front of the room and kneel on the floor.
The “altar”, in this sense, is spiritual. This “Altar Call” is when people are called, [ or compelled by the Holy Spirit], to the front of the church [ building]. To pray and get prayed for. This “going “ to the “altar “, is looked at as someone “going “ to God, rather that just waiting for God to come to them. As far as Speaking in tongues, it depends on the church. It happens more often than not in some [ as “tongues- with an interpretation]. And is usually a warning with an encouragement. There is also “praying in tongues “, which is different. But whatever, must be done in an orderly manner. My experience is that [ when it’s real], the Pastor will recognize that the Holy Spirit wishes to move in such a manner, and will create a time for something. He will usually end his sentence- speaking, and wait on the Lord. This is where there are definite rules regarding it. When it is real, it tends to convict, and cause hearts to be broken. Often this can lead to people , on their own, moving to the “altar “. And prayer can take the rest of the service. Hope this helps you to understand. ✝️🙏🙂

(a.) speaking in tongues happens more often than not; (b.) the "tongues" in question _are_ (as stated in the video) known human languages; (c.) the person speaking has been reasonably verified to _not_ have prior training/experience in the known human language that's emerging from their lips; and, (d.) someone who _does_ know that language is present to provide the interpretation (and thereby indirectly verify that, yes, it's a known human language being spoken correctly) ...? That would indeed seem noteworthy. But it would also seem odd to me that a congregation who mostly speak Language X would happen to have, among their number, a tongues-speaker who _doesn't_ know Language Y, but who starts speaking in Language Y by the Holy Spirit ...and also, in the same congregation, another person who _does_ know Language Y, and is thus able to translate for the tongues-speaker. Such an arrangement can happen, of course! ...but all other things being equal, it seems unlikely to happen _regularly,_ let alone "more often than not." Or am I misunderstanding your description?
"Words, sentences, and even entire verses in the King James Version were removed in the Revised Version." Entire books were removed in the Revised Version: the KJV contained the Deuterocanon until the 1885 revision.
Strange how some women take over and start a church whereas St. Paul says that women should remain silent and if they have a question, they should ask their husbands.
Paul was responding to problems within certain churches (Ephesus and Corinth) at the time of writing. His writings on women’s submission and silence taken literally and without such context goes directly against Jesus’ teachings and interactions with women.
Paul Said He Spoke "With The Tongues Of Men & Angels". Which The Greek Named "Known Tongues (of men) And Unknown Tongues (of angels)". The "Known Tongues" Of Men Must Have A Translator Of The Known Origin In The Languages Of Men. Translating The Word For Word Account Of God's Message To Men Of Certain Languages. Which They Translate Back To The Speaker. As On The Day Of Pentecost. While "The Unknown Tongues" Of Angels Must Have An Interpreter With "The Gift Of Interpreting Tongues". Which Interprets The Intent Of God's Message For Others. From One Given "The Gift Of Interpreting Tongues" As Well. Or One With Only "The Gift Of Tongues" May "Pray To Interpret" The Intent Of From God For Their Self. As Paul Said.
Absolutely not true! Apostolic do not believe in the Trinity. They believe in the one this of God! Jesus is the father, Jesus is the son, and Jesus is the Holy Ghost!
Still amazes me, as i was brought up Catholic and am now Jewish, how the pre-eminent difference is that as a Jew, I don't ascribe to the concept that I (or my soul) was born 'broken'. If that is the case, then God cannot be perfect. Nor can I conceive of a manner in which another human can vicariously absolve my soul, so imploring, or even preventing a non-believing person from potentially doing irreparable harm to themselves in a believer's view is sinful in my eyes. Lastly, why is it that faiths that look upon the Wedding Feast of Cana as the Lord's first miracle (water to wine) such abolitionists when it comes to alcohol. After all, consumption of that wine was under strict Rabbinic supervision (Christ himself), was it not?
The world does so hate the biblical teaching in genesis that in Adam we all fell into sin. The human heart is inclined to evil. Redemption comes when you realise that you sin consistently everyday and that you cannot save yourself and that is why God sent Jesus Christ to become your atonement and free gift of righteousness for you so that you may be reconciled to God and all he requires from you is to believe.

But then I guess Christianity requires vicarious sin to be redeemed by vicarious suffering/absolution. How is this preferable to G*d than they creating every soul a tabla rasa. So many women seam to take on the leadership of churches yet the scripture tell us this is wrong yet they making many arguments that the scripture dose not mean they should be silent in the church one thing they can’t change is that they have to be the husband of one wife.

Imagine being dishonest enough to call your made up heterodox movement "apostolic" even though it has nothing to do with the teachings and traditions the apostles received and passed down. I don't think "apostolic" means what they think it means. It seems that new movements that call themselves Apostolic are about as far from apostolic as one can get.

Speaking in " tongues'"which is also defined as " a language", is the only sign given in scripture that believers had recieved the Holy Spirit when they recieved( Acts ch.2,10,and ch 19). Without this initial sign, a believer has no scripturally backed proof that they have recieved the Holy Spirit yet.

Apostolic Pentecostals (not including charismatic movement where they knock people onto the floor and have convulsions, etc) we do not believe in the trinity but oneness. Speaking in tongues are recorded biblically in 3 different variances....tongues with interpretation, prayer and worship (when spirit over flows) not in unorderly disruption. Faith without works is dead (being in servitude and growing within the church (discipleship)) will reap what is sown as spoken of in Scripture....recognition when Jesus come and we are ALL judged with either book of life or death. Water baptism in Jesus name, Holy spirit baptism (can happen before or after water baptism). Modest godly apparel...focus is on God not on self gratification and hierarchy but meekness and gratitude. So much more but basics.

The 23 Eastern Rite Catholic Churches are just as Apostolic as the Latin Rite. Also, the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches are considered Apostolic by Rome.
There are Several actually, with different starting points in different decades. There's a Swiss group (1847), and the Portland Oregon group (1907), and of course the one you speak of, among others. Same with my denomination I grew up in: I was Church of God (1881- Anderson, IN) and there is a Churches of God (1825- now Findley OH) and the are several more including the Church of God (1886-Cleaveland TN - Pentecostal). Obviously the last group was not Pentecostal to begin with since Pentecostalism didn't even start till 1901. All this to say that just because a group of believers uses a word such as APOSTOLIC or a group of words such as CHURCH of GOD doesn't mean they are the same group or denomination. Some splinter off from the previous group, some just start up on their own, usually trying to use words they find in Scripture that would please the Lord. Hope that helps! 😊

I'm not a Pentecostal but I had the pleasure of attending an AFC service at their 'mother church' in Portland. It was a beautiful service and the music was amazing.
I have watched a number of their videos on YT, and you are right, the music is amazing...they have a large organ, a piano, a full orchestra which includes a harpist, and a large choir. Plus, their sermons are very Christ-centered. i haven't watched all of their videos by any means, but I appreciate the beautiful services I have watched. I have noticed much of their congregational singing is hymns, some of which I have not heard sung in years.

Have you ever been to a camp meeting there? As a child my family would always meet up there. My older brother is still a minister for that church. 52nd and Duke is a very nice area of Portland.
I have personally heard a teenage girl who said she knew no Spanish at all pray in fluent Spanish. At the same meeting I heard a person praying in fluent German, which I recognized although my German was nowhere near as fluent to translate. Same meeting an older lady standing next to me was praying in a beautiful, fluent tongue that I didn’t recognize. When she finished praying, her husband who was a seminary professor said, “That was a beautiful prayer, dear- would you like to know what you said?” She said, “ How do you know what I said? “ He answered, “Because you were praying in fluent Ancient Greek, and that’s what I teach!” She did not know Greek, much less Ancient Greek, but the translation he gave was indeed beautiful. A great book to read is “They Speak With Other Tongues” by John and Elizabeth Sherrill, who started out with scepticism as they researched the tongues phenomenon in the 1960’s.

@@bonniemoerdyk9809 The woman had no idea what language she was speaking, as she had never spoken it before. When you are baptized in the Spirit, you speak in a tongue unknown to you. The German speaker did not know German. The young girl praying that beautiful Spanish prayer did not know any Spanish. I do not understand my own tongue, although at times the Holy Spirit has given me the translation to share. The genuine thing is of God, but there are certainly frauds, many frauds.

@@SeanWinters Yes, I’m aware of that. But I tend to prefer the teachings of Dr. Derek Prince from the 1960’s and 1970’s. He taught that there are public tongues- a gift to others in the assembly, and private tongues- the least of the gifts, for the personal edification of the believer.
If one believes that there are believers who need no personal edification from the Holy Spirit, I suppose they would believe that not all are promised this least of gifts.
On the other hand, if one should simply refuse the least of the gifts, perhaps the Holy Spirit might simply withhold the “ more excellent gifts.”
The study of the gifts of the Spirit in Romans and 1 Corinthians, and probably other places, is always interesting. A bit confusing to those who are Cessationists, but always interesting.
I personally think the latter rain of Joel’s prophecy started in the middle of last century, but Satan was able to sabotage it rather thoroughly with all his counterfeits. I have seen way too many counterfeits in my life, and seem to be seeing even more today. My heart has always longed for that true fellowship of the Holy Spirit, but I don’t think I have seen it except perhaps in passing, sadly. Too much flesh, too many counterfeits!

When using the term "Apostolic Faith Church" this can also be used to describe some churches in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW), Church of our Lord Jesus Christ (COOLJC), etc. The differences are significant, such as baptism is Jesus name (Acts 2:38), and rejection of the Trinity, this should help explain some of the comments 😅

Good question. What does the Bible tell us? Well, every time we see an angel speaking it knows the language of the person it is talking to. So biblically, it appears that the "tongue of angels" is speaking the language of the hearer, whoever they are. This also corresponds with Pentecost, where every man hear what was said in his own language.
Of course, if there is a Biblically supported different view, it's worth considering too.

Acts 2 is the ONLY one example out of several others where the speaking in tongues were languages understood by the observers. In Acts 8, 10, and 19 the speaking in tongues is not said to have been understood by the observers.
There are clearly three types of tongues mentioned in Scripture, Acts chapter 2 where they spoke in another language, two; Paul talking about his private prayer language and three in group worship with another person interpreting.
One type. Pentecostals invent other types to reflect their practice of not using real languages: For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also.
That doesn't mean tongues is for prayer. Just the opposite.

"Follow after covenant love, and desire pneumatikos, but especially that you might prophesy.
For he who speaks in tongues doesn't speak to men, but to God, because no man understands him; however, in the Spirit he speaks mysteries"
I wrote verse 2 as an overview of how the 32 translations I read it in this morning say it. Oddly enough, it means exactly the same thing if you research it in Greek. When someone is speaking in tongues, no one understands it but God. So this begs the question...
How did men from 14 regions all hear the disciples speaking the wonderful works of God in their native tongues? This requires actual thought on the situation, for there are two camps as to who was in the upper room that Pentecost day. Some say only the Twelve were there. If that's true, then the people of 14 regions, each with their own native tongue, heard 12 men speak exclusively in their language...
Even Common Core math can't make 12=14.
Then there's those who say the 120 disciples that were mentioned in Acts 1:15 were there, which means that the 3,000 + men that came to see what had happened and subsequently heard God's works spoken clearly in their language were able to discern their particular language from 120 or so people shouting ecstatic utterances all at once.
Either way it took a miracle of hearing from God to make them able to hear the Gospel in their language, the first instance of Interpretation of Tongues in Acts. Some may say that's malarkey, but we're talking about the God who was able to make the footsteps of four hungry lepers sound like Doom's Own Army to the Syrians besieging Samaria. (2 Kings 7:3-7)
God said through Paul that NO MAN understands when a believer speaks in tongues. Only Holy Ghost granting a manifestation of Interpretation of Tongues makes it possible. That's what has happened every time from Pentecost to today. Paul mentioned this singular truth, that no man understands tongues, even the speaker, without Interpretation of Tongues, several times in 1 Corinthians 14.
The Bible means what it says. This chapter is no different. Did you notice that Paul and Jude agree that speaking in tongues builds us up in our faith? (1 Cor 14:4; Jude 20) This agrees with Isaiah 28:11-12 - tongues is the Rest that God gave us in Christ, a way for us to be refreshed from above as we speak with "stammering lips and another tongue". How is a "sign to unbelievers"?
Through my wonderful Father having Holy Ghost interpret what those speaking in tongues are saying to unbelievers who may hear. If he didn't do that, as Paul said, they would think we're "off our meds".

I read 1 Corinthians 14:2 in 32 translations this morning and also studied the Greek to be sure - when someone speaks in tongues, no one understands what is said but God. And still had each listener hear the magnificent works of God in their native tongues...
Could only do it through God granting each of them the manifestation of Interpretation of Tongues. So is it in every instance where someone speaks in tongues and those listening hear a known language.
For working in this area of denominational history, pick up a copy of Vinson Synan's (Pentecostal historian) original edition of The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement in the United States, Eerdmans, 1971. It's both scholarly and fair...which was a rarity for a historical account. (I don't understand why you, Joshua, select obscure, smaller denominations rather than a broader sweep of denominational history. 🤔)

He’s already covered Pentecostals like the Assemblies of God, Church of God in Christ, the Foursquare Church, etc.; both Finished Work Pentecostals and Holiness-Pentecostals; and non-Pentecostal Charismatic denominations like Calvary Chapel, Vineyard Association, Christian and Missionary Alliance, etc.
The Church of God in Christ (COGIC) is the largest most well known historically African American-majority Pentecostal denomination in the United States with an additional presence in the Caribbean and West Africa; it is also one of the denominational direct descendants of the Azusa Street Revival; it is a Holiness Pentecostal denomination.
The Christian and Missionary Alliance (CMA) is a broadly Evangelical denomination in the Higher Life movement.
The Assemblies of God (AG) was founded as an outgrowth of a merger between several Finished Work Pentecostals groups in the Church of God in Christ, Christian and Missionary Alliance, and various other denominations, including those of Reformed and Baptist traditions. It has a presence world wide through its regional and country-specific sub-divisions.
The Foursquare Church is another Finished Work Pentecostal denomination that grew out of the Assemblies of God and has a larger presence on the West Coast of the United States.
Calvary Chapel is a broadly Evangelical non-Pentecostal Charismatic denomination that grew out of the Pentecostal denomination known as the Foursquare Church, although it has historical Pentecostal origins, it is no longer Pentecostal due to its opposition to the Initial Evidence doctrine. It has a large presence in the U.S. West Coast and is well known for their missionary work among the Hippies, anti-war movement, and borderline-irreligious nominal Christians disaffected by Mainline Protestants and Fundamentalists during the Cold War, Vietnam War, and the 20th Century.

Have you ever heard of Watchman Nee and Witness Lee? I remember that I found a ministry online back in 2012 which distributed several of their works for free. I know there's some kind of movement behind their names, but I never got to research further into them or their related publications.
I would love to see a video about them (if a cult or not, etc.). They even have a New Testament version called "Recovery Version".

I'm always a bit iffy when a church is KJV only. And even though I'm a Creationist for personal reasons, I don't like it when a denomination denies scientific evidence, under the pretense that it somehow is a denial of God.

As a Roman Catholic, I am always interested in others' versions of their walk in Faith.
Unhappily, they always miss the Real Presence of Christ in the Breaking of the Bread.

Jesus’ graphic imagery about eating His flesh and drinking His blood is indeed puzzling at first. Context will help us understand what He is saying. As we consider everything that Jesus said and did in John 6, the meaning of His words becomes clearer.
Earlier in the chapter, Jesus fed the 5,000 (John 6:1-13). The next day, the same multitudes continued to follow Him, seeking another meal. Jesus pointed out their short-sightedness: they were only seeking physical bread, but there was something more important: “Food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you” (verse 27). At this point, Jesus attempts to turn their perspective away from physical sustenance to their true need, which was spiritual.
This contrast between physical food and spiritual food sets the stage for Jesus’ statement that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood. Jesus explains that it is not physical bread that the world needs, but spiritual bread. Jesus three times identifies Himself as that spiritual bread (John 6:35, 48, 51). And twice He emphasizes faith (a spiritual action) as the key to salvation: “My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life” (verse 40); and “Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life” (verse 47).
Jesus then compares and contrasts Himself to the manna that Israel had eaten in the time of Moses: “Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die” (John 6:49-50). Like manna, Jesus came down from heaven; and, like manna, Jesus gives life. Unlike manna, the life Jesus gives lasts for eternity (verse 58). In this way, Jesus is greater than Moses (see Hebrews 3:3).
Having established His metaphor (and the fact that He is speaking of faith in Him), Jesus presses the symbolism even further: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh. . . . I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you. But anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. . . . My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. . . . Anyone who feeds on me will live because of me” (John 6:51-56, NLT).
To prevent being misconstrued, Jesus specifies that He has been speaking metaphorically: “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you-they are full of the Spirit and life” (John 6:63). Those who misunderstood Jesus and were offended by His talk about eating His flesh and drinking His blood were stuck in a physical mindset, ignoring the things of the Spirit. They were concerned with getting another physical meal, so Jesus uses the realm of the physical to teach a vital spiritual truth. Those who couldn’t make the jump from the physical to the spiritual turned their backs on Jesus and walked away (verse 66).
At the Last Supper, Jesus gives a similar message and one that complements His words in John 6-when the disciples gather to break bread and drink the cup, they “proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). In fact, Jesus said that the bread broken at the table is His body, and the cup they drink is the new covenant in His blood, shed for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:26-28). Their act of eating and drinking was to be a symbol of their faith in Christ. Just as physical food gives earthly life, Christ’s sacrifice on the cross gives heavenly life.
Some people believe that the bread and wine of communion are somehow transformed into Jesus’ actual flesh and blood, or that Jesus somehow imbues these substances with His real presence. These ideas, called transubstantiation (professed by the Catholic and Orthodox churches) and consubstantiation (held by Lutherans), ignore Jesus’ statement that “the flesh counts for nothing” (John 6:63). The majority of Protestants understand that Jesus was speaking metaphorically about His flesh and blood and hold that the bread and wine are symbolic of the spiritual bond created with Christ through faith.
In the wilderness testing, the devil tempts Jesus with bread, and Jesus answers, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’” (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3). The implication is that the bread is God’s Word and that is what sustains us. Jesus is called the Word of God who came to earth and was made flesh (John 1:14). The Word of God is also the Bread of Life (John 6:48).
The book of Hebrews references the way that God uses the physical things of this earth as a way to help us understand and apply spiritual truth. Hebrews 8:5 says that some tangible things are “a copy and shadow of what is in heaven,” and that chapter explains how the Old Covenant, so concerned with physical rites and ceremonies, was replaced by the New Covenant in which God’s laws are written on our hearts (verse 10; cf. Jeremiah 31:33).
Hebrews 9:1-2 says, “The first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary. A tabernacle was set up. In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place.” According to Hebrews 8:5, the consecrated bread, or the “bread of the Presence,” was a physical representation of a spiritual concept, namely, the actual presence of God being continually with us today. The physical tent of meeting has been replaced by a spiritual temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16), and the physical bread of the Presence has become the spiritual bread that abides within us through the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus said we must “eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood” (John 6:53), He spoke, as He often did, in parabolic terms. We must receive Him by faith (John 1:12). “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). We understand that we need physical food and drink; Jesus wants us to understand that we also need spiritual food and drink-and that is what His sacrifice provides.
All we can do is pray that they will return to the One True Church
Ummm.... let's review. Correct me if I'm wrong. Catholics proclaim the bread and wine used for Communion, to "change" from bread and wine by the Church's own power when it is presented...to then be actually Christ's blood and flesh ( "Transubstantiation", correct?). Very similar, it seems from the Lutheran belief that the bread and wine being presented *IS* the body and blood of Christ (Luke 22:19-20... Jesus says the bread IS is body...and the wine IS his blood). The only difference is the biblical literal translation used by Lutherans (*IS* means "*IS, it doesn't mean to them "represents")....wheras the Catholics come to same end-game, by the church's power to CHANGE the bread and wine to blood and body. In the end....it's the same thing being presented to the believer. I think Lutheran and Catholics are the only 2 denominations claiming "Real Presence" that you refer to.

Given that there are probably thousands of languages that have died out, how would one determine that some tongue is just jibberish? Or how would one know the interpretation of that tongue was just made up? Also, what are "Heavenly languages?"
Languages follow patterns. If speech has no patterns it cannot be language.
And if you had a valid interpretation and it were real speech a linguist could transcribe the speech in the lost language and start working out the vocabulary and grammar. Obviously this won't work on nonsense and that is how you would know.
The speaking in " tongues" in Acts ch.2 and 1Corinthians is actually one spiritual language spoken by more than one believer at a time.
In Acts ch.2 the miracle for the men in the crowd wasn't that the believers were all speaking in their native languages.
It was all the believers speaking in one spiritual language and those in the crowd Hearing what they were saying in their individual native languages.
The Word alerts us to the fact by repeating that the men were wondered three times how they were hearing what the believers were saying in their native languages.
This is a sign unto unbelievers, the men in the crowd.

I'm curious whether the "altar call" brings them up to an _actual altar,_ or if they strongly deny that the table used in the sanctuary is an _altar,_ because they deny the sacrificial nature of Holy Communion?
I'm also curious how often the spontaneous speaking in other known languages occurs. That would seem to be an objectively testable thing, unlike "prayer language" glossolalia.
in an old pentecostal church i went to as a child as well as a baptist church i went to later on, it means to go up to the front of the room and kneel on the floor.
The “altar”, in this sense, is spiritual. This “Altar Call” is when people are called, [ or compelled by the Holy Spirit], to the front of the church [ building]. To pray and get prayed for. This “going “ to the “altar “, is looked at as someone “going “ to God, rather that just waiting for God to come to them.
As far as Speaking in tongues, it depends on the church. It happens more often than not in some [ as “tongues- with an interpretation]. And is usually a warning with an encouragement.
There is also “praying in tongues “, which is different. But whatever, must be done in an orderly manner. My experience is that [ when it’s real], the Pastor will recognize that the Holy Spirit wishes to move in such a manner, and will create a time for something. He will usually end his sentence- speaking, and wait on the Lord. This is where there are definite rules regarding it. When it is real, it tends to convict, and cause hearts to be broken. Often this can lead to people , on their own, moving to the “altar “. And prayer can take the rest of the service.

That would indeed seem noteworthy.
But it would also seem odd to me that a congregation who mostly speak Language X would happen to have, among their number, a tongues-speaker who _doesn't_ know Language Y, but who starts speaking in Language Y by the Holy Spirit ...and also, in the same congregation, another person who _does_ know Language Y, and is thus able to translate for the tongues-speaker.
Such an arrangement can happen, of course! ...but all other things being equal, it seems unlikely to happen _regularly,_ let alone "more often than not."

1st Corinthians 14. refutes much of tongues. Paul said I’d rather speak 3 words of a known tongue than 10,000 of an unknown tongue.

Strange how some women take over and start a church whereas St. Paul says that women should remain silent and if they have a question, they should ask their husbands.
Paul was responding to problems within certain churches (Ephesus and Corinth) at the time of writing. His writings on women’s submission and silence taken literally and without such context goes directly against Jesus’ teachings and interactions with women.

The word "Apostolic" is used by many different denominations. The one in this video is absolutely trinitarian.
Still amazes me, as i was brought up Catholic and am now Jewish, how the pre-eminent difference is that as a Jew, I don't ascribe to the concept that I (or my soul) was born 'broken'. If that is the case, then God cannot be perfect. Nor can I conceive of a manner in which another human can vicariously absolve my soul, so imploring, or even preventing a non-believing person from potentially doing irreparable harm to themselves in a believer's view is sinful in my eyes. Lastly, why is it that faiths that look upon the Wedding Feast of Cana as the Lord's first miracle (water to wine) such abolitionists when it comes to alcohol. After all, consumption of that wine was under strict Rabbinic supervision (Christ himself), was it not?
The world does so hate the biblical teaching in genesis that in Adam we all fell into sin. The human heart is inclined to evil. Redemption comes when you realise that you sin consistently everyday and that you cannot save yourself and that is why God sent Jesus Christ to become your atonement and free gift of righteousness for you so that you may be reconciled to God and all he requires from you is to believe.

But then I guess Christianity requires vicarious sin to be redeemed by vicarious suffering/absolution. How is this preferable to G*d than they creating every soul a tabla rasa. TLDW: Conservative Pentecostals, a bit legalistic, (“all prayers end with in Jesus name, Amen”, “no dancing in our services”), Episcopalian structure under their own organization, allows women to be ordained, entire sanctification.
Imagine being dishonest enough to call your made up heterodox movement "apostolic" even though it has nothing to do with the teachings and traditions the apostles received and passed down. I don't think "apostolic" means what they think it means. It seems that new movements that call themselves Apostolic are about as far from apostolic as one can get.

Speaking in " tongues'"which is also defined as " a language", is the only sign given in scripture that believers had recieved the Holy Spirit when they recieved( Acts ch.2,10,and ch 19).
Without this initial sign, a believer has no scripturally backed proof that they have recieved the Holy Spirit yet.

Apostolic Pentecostals (not including charismatic movement where they knock people onto the floor and have convulsions, etc) we do not believe in the trinity but oneness. Speaking in tongues are recorded biblically in 3 different variances....tongues with interpretation, prayer and worship (when spirit over flows) not in unorderly disruption. Faith without works is dead (being in servitude and growing within the church (discipleship)) will reap what is sown as spoken of in Scripture....recognition when Jesus come and we are ALL judged with either book of life or death. Water baptism in Jesus name, Holy spirit baptism (can happen before or after water baptism). Modest godly apparel...focus is on God not on self gratification and hierarchy but meekness and gratitude. So much more but basics.

There are Several actually, with different starting points in different decades. There's a Swiss group (1847), and the Portland Oregon group (1907), and of course the one you speak of, among others. Same with my denomination I grew up in: I was Church of God (1881- Anderson, IN) and there is a Churches of God (1825- now Findley OH) and the are several more including the Church of God (1886-Cleaveland TN - Pentecostal). Obviously the last group was not Pentecostal to begin with since Pentecostalism didn't even start till 1901. All this to say that just because a group of believers uses a word such as APOSTOLIC or a group of words such as CHURCH of GOD doesn't mean they are the same group or denomination. Some splinter off from the previous group, some just start up on their own, usually trying to use words they find in Scripture that would please the Lord. Hope that helps! 😊
