I’ve just discovered your fantastic channel and detailing through necessity! My car has taken a bad hit in the past week, 1. Washed while being serviced and there must have been grit on the garages sponge. 2. While at work it got covered, (every panel) in tar spots (1-5mm) as an adjacent footpath was being repaired. I am now prepping a wish list to get to repairing and the only thing I already have is meguiars UC!
Fantastic channel and methodical approach to all you do!

I'll tell you right away why I find this upload very helpful!
Actually, the UC is where it all started, and for many of us, before the market was flooded with too many products that are ... almost the same.
The UC does what it's supposed to do. And for a competitive price. Then a short quick finish with the SONAX Perfect Finish ... that's all you need.
And very easy to remove oxidation manually. Just think of hard-to-reach places, bird droppings, etc.
With an LHR15 and various pads, the options are endless and effective.
    Greetings.

I'm saying this before watching the video as I've not found UC to be all that great. Certainly not noticeably ahead of even cheaper ones. I bought it because of the reputation so it will interesting to see how John uses it and rates it. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

When I corrected my 2016 5 Series, the paint was rock hard, and of all the compounds I had on hand (Menzerna heavy cut, M105, and Ultimate) Meguiars worked the best. It also has very little dust, and a pleasant smell.

I learned how to paint correct using this product back in 2010, I found on black cars it hazed and would have to do a second pass with Meguiars Polish, now to be fair I was learning, and I haven't used the compound in years. I did keep it just in case I have some old car that needs a touch up. At the time the compound/polish combo worked great for me, I probably could still be using it and do just fine. Thanks for the video, always enjoy!

  • @Yorci62

Interesting 8 minutes describing the investigation and the causal factor that resulted in the marking of the paintwork.
I created a very long and heavy mark on the paintwork the same way all along the nearside, caused by brushing slow and hard along a recently cut hedgerow in the Lake District, when negotiating giving way to an oncoming vehicle on Hardknott Pass where there was no passing place nearby.
Thanks for the demo. I was going to use the Meguiar's scratch remover, but just did as you said and took my time with the ultimate compound then the polish and then the ultimate wax. I'm very impressed.
I have been a big fan of Meguiar's Ultimate range for many years and can’t praise them enough. I have always been impressed with the show piece the products create and its longevity. I am in the process of moving over to Bilt Hamber purely due to many car valeters on RUclips highlighting how good it is. I hope BH gives Meguiar's Ultimate a run for its money, in terms of value for money, creating a show piece, and longevity.

For what they are these products (both compound and polish) are amazing. For the price, accessibility (here you can walk into any auto store and pick it up), and ease of use, you will struggle to find anything better. It just does everything well and what it says it will do and introduces detailing to the masses. Nearly anyone can pick up a DA and this polish and take to the paint and make a noticeable difference. Also, not to mention it can be used by hand easily making it even more accessible.

  • @larsenttif

Interesting. I polished a Volvo once. I tried different combos during the compounding-stage. When I used D300 like a two stage-polish, first pass with 4 criss/cross motion - buff off - and the second pass with 2 criss/cross, it worked pretty well. I still had to refine it with something like SonaxPF or similar. Then I started to look for possible options in my little arsenal of products, because I was doing something like a three step combo, which is very time consuming. I kept the MF cutting pad, but switched my Meg's D300 with two dots of UC and two dots of a diminishing cutting compound with long working time - and boom - I had made myself a good one step for that Volvo- paint. I was thinking of getting rid of my good old bottle with UC before I polished that Volvo, because I thought it was too much of what we call a "consumer-style" product. I promise you, I will never throw away UC. An old lady as you say, and it is a really good product to use, for everybody, at least if this is detailing geek/freak -show is a hobby of yours 😂

Great Video Jon. This product has stood the test of time and is so easy to use. Rather than get the machine out, I fix small scratches with a dampened Megs Microfibre polishing pad and apply lightly using a number of passes until the desired result is achieved. I used Farecla G3 originally, but Megs UC requires minimal finishing with the 205, which is my go-to polish.

I have managed to totally get rid of branch scratches altogether, don’t remember what I used,

I find meguiar's ultimate compound and ultimate polish fantastic!!!. These are my #1 on black lacquer pieces. I used several combos but it was always quite aggressive enough not to have the perfect finish. While ultimate compound with a meguiar's DA burgundy pad followed by ultimate polish with meguiar's DA yellow pad, and the finish is perfect!, I think the products stay lubricated enough to protect the fragile finish and contain the perfect cut for this substrate!. M105 & M205 where M110 & M210 work well on black lacquer but don't get the ultimate finish! Maybe still too abrasive and less lubricated?!. On the other hand on body paint my favorite combo remains M110 & M210 see M205 if I want a little more bite on harder paint.

I had a huge scratch along the side of my Mk1 Puma once, it looked like someone had gone down the side with a pound coin from the rear quarter to the front wing, that’s not nice because you can get it repaired only to have it done again. Then, a while later ( months ) whilst in my study I watched the neighbours kid and his friends wobbling around my car on their bikes. Later I had a look and the scratch was at the correct height for handlebar damage. 🤬

I had the exact same looking damage, even down to the chattery bits, down the side of my black Astra J VXR once. That was also caused by a thick stick poking out of a hedge that I had to move over towards because a car came the other way. It literally managed to catch every panel down the side. Starting at the front bumper it then moved upwards over the front wing, smacked the wing mirror which sent it back downwards onto the door, carried on across the rear quarter and then exited over the side of the rear bumper.
The only reason I was down that road was to give my father in law a lift to his Christmas do and he'd offered me the use of his car, which I'd turned down, so I didn't use my petrol. It was dark at the time and I saw the stick at last minute as the oncoming car's headlights caused it to cast a shadow. I remember not being able to sleep that night and was straight out the next morning sorting it 😂

Hi Jon thank you for another great video. I wanted to ask I attempted to get rid of a scratch on my boot and managed to do a really bad job using 3000 and 5000 sand paper following a video on YT. I’ve been told that the best option to get rid of the haze and scratch is to get a DA with Koch Chemie H9 and F6 would this be the best option. If you can let me know I would really appreciate it and thank so much for your knowledge and guidance you have made into you 😂😂😂😂

Yes m8 h9 the haze out with coarse pad and some pressure. . Then finish out with m3 and finishing pad. But I don't know how much clearcoat u have left.

If by “bad job” you mean the scratch is still there, it may just be too deep to get out. Past the clear coat maybe. 3000 is pretty mild though and you may just need to step up to 2000. Just make sure you take it slow and don’t cut through the clear. Then you can refine it with 3000 and 5000 and any polish should be able to clear up 5000 marks

Hi Jon, You said you’d just cleaned the car beforehand, was this just a snow foam and shampoo or did you do any sort of decontamination before polishing? TVM! 😎

I just knew you were going to say a bush, I did exactly the same thing the problem is my car is ceramic coated and try as I might the scratches will not go as the coating is so hard and the scratch compound (not meguiars) does nothing with hand polishing, any ideas what else I could try. or do you think the Meguiars might be better, have you ever had the same problem with a coated car yourself?

As I posted here before you can buy another small bottle of perfect finish and you're good to go. Rupes yellow toad, CG Orange, etc.
You can't go wrong with the UC, absolutely not.

It’s sad, but I know some shops that would wet sand and buff those out, but charge customers for full refinish. 🤬

Can you cut by hand? I understand it would take much longer but wondering if it's possible.

Great if you can use it inside but in direct sunlight it flakes all over the car-not ideal on a hot day.
