Will the ultimate compound work in my situtation because I have some chipped paint on the hood and I think of sanding it and I am curious if it works after sanding
If the paint is chipped using a compound will not help as the paint has already been chipped/removed in those areas. Typically the only thing that will fix chips is touch up paint.
HELLO HARRY MEGUIRE... I have a car that is in a similar condition. I would like to introduce the water sanding sanding step in this process. I want only to lightly sand it by hand maybe with the use of a machine with very light pass and Grit grade. What grit would you guys recommend and what would be the correct order for these steps to include the light sanding. To complicate things I want to add a light 2k clear coat to the paint as evidently all this sanding and cutting compound will remove clear and paint as at 8:35 on an oxidised car surface. Thank you
Typically we would recommend finshing with 2000-3000 grit paper. You will then want to compound and polish to remove the sanding marks and give great shine/gloss. Here is a video that shows how best to do that with some of our best compounds and polishes... s.3m.com/s264vu

A couple of quick questions, after the wax is applied does it just soak in or does it require further buffing? Also if I have a couple of rust bubbles forming do I need to avoid going there with the polisher?
Thank you for the feedback. 👍 The Gold Class Wax should be applied in a very thin coat then allowed to dry to a chalky haze before wiping off with a good quality microfiber towel. This can take as little as 10-20 minutes in some environments but it can take even longer for the product to dry if it is over applied and/or the weather is not ideal. If you have rust spots you will want to keep the product away from them simply because the residue could become trapped in those areas and difficult to remove.

Hi, great video, thanks. I've been trying to achieve the same on a 2007 Honda Jazz but it has been a complete fail :-( I started with finer pads / compounds which had no effect at all, then gradually went coarser - still no effect. Then I tried 2000 grit wet and dry, very lightly with plenty of water and a slightly deeper colour began to appear, but only a few strokes after that it was through to primer. I'm guessing that this particular car has a very thin colour coat and a hard clearcoat over the top. Would that explain why it takes an aggressive approach to get to the oxidisation, but then there's not enough depth to get back to a rich colour? Any insight into what's going on here would be appreciated! Thanks.

The compound is designed to actually remove the oxidation but how fast future oxidation might take place is highly variable and depends on many factors including the future care the vehicle receives and the environmental elements it is exposed to.
Not sure which step/product you are referring to when you say "final polishing" but typically for application of a polish or wax with a good DA polisher we recommend about 3000-4000 opm (orbits per minute).
What pad is better using this product because my truck paint faded some can I use a yellow pad or another color like orange. I am using a rotary polisher though.
We don't necessarily recommend this product be used with a rotary buffer as it is designed for hand, orbital, or DA application. The effectiveness and ease of use could vary widely. That being said we don't have a recommendation on a pad for a rotary but if it were used correctly on a Dual Action Polisher we would typically recommend our foam cutting disc (burgundy).
No, it is designed to remove oxidation not just hide it. In theory given the same environmental conditions oxidation could occur again but that usually take a considerable amount of time. Of course how well the vehicle is maintained has an impact on that as well.
If you are asking how long might it take for the oxidation to return that is a highly variable and depends on a number of factors including how well you maintain your vehicle and the environment it is exposed to.
If you are planning on using all three steps the order would be compound, polish, and then wax. Keep in mind polishing can be an optional step. Whether or not you choose to polish is often a decision based on the condition and color of your paint as well as your personal desires for it. The darker the color the more visual impact a polish might have. Someone who is merely trying to maintain their white daily driver in good condition might not feel it is worth their time/money to polish. Someone who is incredibly particular about their black show car may consider polishing a vital step. Hope that helps.
That very much depends on the condition of the paint and your personal desires for it. Feel free to reach out via live chat on our website to discuss the specifics of your vehicle with one of our surface care experts. s.3m.com/p3nsv9
Not sure why our friends over the pond chose this particular route. It is also possible that this video was not intended to cover every step for every situation. Keep in mind the wax has polish in it too so many times you can still get great results even if you only compound and wax.
New to this stuff. I did it on my car in large areas and it dried on me and i wasnt able to buff it out well enough by hand. Its been 2 days and its dry and cloudy white. Does not come off with water or alcohol. Whats the best way to remove this? Thanks for the help.
As you may have already figured out the compound should only be applied to a small section (2'X2") at a time and wiped off immediately. There is another link below for a video that shows how best to apply compound, polish and wax by hand. The best way to remove it is to reapply the compound the correct way as the compound will help re-release the dried residue from the first application. s.3m.com/3zhw5k
@@meguiars I am trying to understand the functional difference when repairing oxidized clear coat by using the compound versus re-applying a new clear coat. So would you say the compound is like an alternate way to get a shiny transparent top coat (thus avoiding the need to respray a new clear coat) ?
Those are two very different things. Compound is used to remove defects including oxidation in the existing clear coat (paint). It does not leave anything behind and does not coat your vehicle with anything. It is simply remove to store existing paint. Repainting is of course a much more expensive and difficult process most consumers would not undertake on their own due to the lack of expertise, tools/equipment, proper paint booth, etc. If you are trying to diagnose whether or not your paint is salvageable please feel free to reach out directly to our Solutions Hub via our website. Any of our experts would be happy to help you figure out whether your vehicle possible has oxidation or has failed entirely requiring a repaint. s.3m.com/9pxkwwi3
This is not faded paint. You can clearly see that this is some kind of compound that they have left to dry to give the faded pink salmon effect paint to make you all think this is actually faded paint when it's not. Please believe me. I am a professional detailer. To address faded paint you will need to prep before compound polishing by using wet and dry sand paper. The polishing step is often optional and a personal decision likely based on the color and condition of the paint as well as your desire for it. If you have a darker color car and want the absolute best shine you may want to consider polishing between compound and wax. If you have a white daily driver in good shape and your primary concern is protection you may not see the benefit of a polish. Again, often a personal decision based on the specifics of your vehicle and your desires for it.
That is something done routinely by professionals (although likely not even a majority of them) not something required by the average person working on their own vehicle. There is a different level of time commitment and attention to detail depending on who you are. Many videos are created for the average person who might be just learning to detail not only for the elite detailers of the world. Hope that makes sense. 😃

The current oxidation is actually removed. It's not just being hidden. That's not to say a vehicle with old paint being beaten up by the elements regularly will not slowly oxidize again in the future. The same thing that caused this situation could of course happen again and that is why frequent care/maintenance is important.

What you are describing could be paint failure. If that is the case unfortunately the only true remedy is repainting. Here are some examples of paint failure... meguiarsonline.com/forums/showthread.php?20411-The-Clearcoat-Failure-Photo-Archive&highlight=paint+failure+archive
@@meguiars My neighbours Mini 1st Gen has a total paint failure but not on all panels. The bonnet, roof and rear are perfectly fine, one door and side panels are disastrous. That makes me think it is not just oxidation but a failure of painting itself, in the factory. All panels are exposed to natural elements in the same way since 2003 but only now it shows possibly different environments, methods or ingredients during the process of painting.
Red fades the fastest (besides black) because it has the longest wave length in the colour spectrum. This means it's the easiest wave to disrupt and more importantly absorbs the most photons which in turn leads to faster bleaching cracking and other UV damage than a colour such as blue which would naturally reflect a lot of that energy back away from the finish.
Yes, the burgundy pad is a cutting pad typically used with compound and the yellow is the polishing pad typically used with a polish or light compound. Ultimate Compound can be used with either it is just a questions of how aggressive you want/need to get.
It does actually remove the oxidation if that is what you are asking. It does not mean that your paint exposed to time and elements would never possibly oxidize again.
The primary function of a compound is to remove defects in paint not give a high shine. Of course removing defects, especially oxidation, will dramatically improve the appearance of the paint. As shown in the video you would typically at minimum want to wax after compounding which would add gloss and protection.
Polish is designed to create the highest shine possible. A pure polish does not offer an defect removal or protection and would be used between compounding (defect removal) and waxing (protection). How much of an impact a polish has is relative to the condition and color of paint.
My cars paint is more faded than this one, I have been told I need to sandpaper it with 1000 then 3000 grit before getting it polished, or cab I use the polish directly
That depends on the severity of the oxidation. A couple of things to keep in mind... 1) If your vehicle's paint is actually failing/failed and not just oxidized the only real remedy is repainting. We may be able to help you diagnose with pictures. 2) Wet sanding is a professional process and will require the appropriate machine and skillset to remove the sanding marks. All these comments. You guys have no clue. All you watching this are purely commenting on what your watching. It don't work like this. This needs lacquer treatment wet sanding then polishing.
I'm not sure I trust a guy who uses a waterless wash on their car 😅All that's doing is rubbing tiny dust and sand particles into your paint causing scratches.
The faded paint will become worse after the surface dry out. If you polish it after you compound it and seal it with wax, it may hold up for 3 to 6 months. Again, you can't save faded paint by keep cutting it. Compound will make each single narrow scratch become Grand Canyon. From a distance, the paint looks haze.
I have used Meguiars on my heavily faded red Suzuki. As you said, polished and waxed well made it well-protected but a year on the care for the paint was still a breeze. The effect didn't fade again, on the contrary, with some further polishing troublesome places for absolute perfection the paintwork was absolutely spotless. Cleaning bacame easier and all it needed was a waterless wash and thick fiber cloth. No marks, no fading, water marks, scratches and any sign of oxidation. .
😅 yeah and then in 2 weeks time the car will be pink gain 😂 this isn't how this would work. Trust me on this!! Red paint is a nightmare 😫 and notorious for fading. I won't take any cat with paint as bad as this golf! I would tell the customer sorry I am not interested in taking the job. It would waste too much of my time. I spend a maximum of 5 hours on a vehicle at £55 per hour

How come a clay bar wasn't used to clean the fine dirt and dust before applying the Ultimate Compound like I've seen in other videos by Meguiar's?
Claying is not always necessary but yes, that would happen after washing and before compounding if you have bonded contaminants on the surface.
Why does the oxidisation come back after a couple weeks after polishing?? Seems pointless putting all the work in?
You have to seal it so that it’s protected from the air, it’ll stay like that
Need a layer of polish and then wax on top of that to seal it all in
What a satisfying video 💪

Whether or not you choose to polish is often a decision based on the condition and color of your paint as well as your personal desires for it. The darker the color the more visual impact a polish might have. Someone who is merely trying to maintain their white daily driver in good condition might not feel it is worth their time/money to polish. Someone who is incredibly particular about their black show car may consider polishing a vital step.
Hope that helps.
what do you guys prefere on black paint
That very much depends on the condition of the paint and your personal desires for it.

Won't it be pink after a few days of rain again when polish wares off??
No, the compound will actually remove the oxidation not just hide it.
Is there still clear coat on the faded paint?
That depends on whether or not it is a single stage paint or clear coated vehicle.
Noted you used yellow pad for roof/bonnet but dark burgundy for sides.
Reason?
It looks like the sides were worse than the top & needed more cut from the red cutting pad.
Which liquid you use before the restorer
Sorry, not sure we understand your question. Can you please be more specific?
Hii in this case why don't apply últimate polish after compound

@@meguiars THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REPLYING. Will do it the correct way this time!
Happy to help! 👍
Very indeph video and demonstration 💪🔥🔥 thank you
Thank you for the feedback. 👍

When would you polish after compounding?
If choose to polish after compounding you would typically do that right after compounding.
@@meguiars I guess I meant to ask is polishing required after using Ultimate Compound, or can you go right to waxing after compounding?
The polishing step is often optional and a personal decision likely based on the color and condition of the paint as well as your desire for it. If you have a darker color car and want the absolute best shine you may want to consider polishing between compound and wax. If you have a white daily driver in good shape and your primary concern is protection you may not see the benefit of a polish. Again, often a personal decision based on the specifics of your vehicle and your desires for it.
wht type of pad for DA ?
find pad/medium pad?
Assuming you are referring to application of our Ultimate Compound we recommend our DA Foam Cutting Disc/pad for use when applying with a DA.
Why You guys never apply any kind of panel wipe like IPA or something before Wax or whatever??????
That is something done routinely by professionals (although likely not even a majority of them) not something required by the average person working on their own vehicle. There is a different level of time commitment and attention to detail depending on who you are. Many videos are created for the average person who might be just learning to detail not only for the elite detailers of the world. Hope that makes sense. 😃
@@meguiars it make sense, thank you
I wish it was that easy, my black car roof has a white haze on it, and isnt overly black and shiny 😔

The compound dry quickly on the hood and was hard to buff off , i did it by hand
Not sure how large of a section you are working on but we recommend only do a 2X2 area at most before wiping off immediately.

and silicone grease on the black plastic parts to make them look like new black color ! and the black rubber moldings ! silicone grease !

Hi I've tried this and the paint is still faded, any idea why? 😊
Difficult to say without more information or a picture. It is important to understand there is a big difference between faded (light-moderate oxidation) and paint failure. If your paint is already at the point of failure there is nothing that can be done but to repaint. Please feel free to reach out to our Solutions Hub with a couple good pictures and more details. We likely could give better guidance with more info.

Why do people polish faded paint a using Meguiars Ultimate Compound? Is it because it contains silicone?
A good compound like Ultimate Compound is what is necessary to restore/remove faded/oxidized paint. It has nothing to do with silicone.
Great video! , is there such a polish that will remove orange peel from paintwork?
Orange peel requires sanding then buffing to remove the sanding marks and restore shine. A compound alone will not do the trick.
The Paint transfer is strong with this one...
Probably it’s uni-lacked, no metallic and clear coat
is the result permanent or need to repeat in a year or so?
The current oxidation is actually removed. It's not just being hidden. That's not to say a vehicle with old paint being beaten up by the elements regularly will not slowly oxidize again in the future. The same thing that caused this situation could of course happen again and that is why frequent care/maintenance is important.
@@meguiars thanks for the reply
I think that some parts like the mirror its impossible to be restored , the varnish completely missing an d the colour is faded
Maybe in that occasion you just masking ? Im asking all this because : i have a problem with my red perl hood (swift sport 2008) , 2 spots diameter about 15cm each , seems like varnish removed(not sure)
When you pass your finger feels like light scratching
The optical result is like light matt
Any thoughts ? Need to be painted or by all the process i will have a permanent result( without care for 3 years )
What you are describing could be paint failure. If that is the case unfortunately the only true remedy is repainting. Here are some examples of paint failure...

@@meguiars thanks a lot
Unfortunatelly as i see by the photos im in the beginning of clear coat failure
@@meguiars My neighbours Mini 1st Gen has a total paint failure but not on all panels. The bonnet, roof and rear are perfectly fine, one door and side panels are disastrous. That makes me think it is not just oxidation but a failure of painting itself, in the factory. All panels are exposed to natural elements in the same way since 2003 but only now it shows possibly different environments, methods or ingredients during the process of painting.
Friend has a hood trying to remove oxidization
Wash, clay, compound, polish, wax
Sniper Paint Correction that’s exactly what we did. Used ultimate wash wax and the clay bar kit and Ultimate polish finishing with Gold Class Wax
How did it come out? Feel free to ask any further questions.
Meguiar's it came out great it would be perfect if we had a DA polisher but by hand. It removed alot
Just depends on the particular trim pieces, how easy it is to avoid them, etc. There are definitely times you would want to tape off the trim.
Wonderful
Red fades the fastest (besides black) because it has the longest wave length in the colour spectrum. This means it's the easiest wave to disrupt and more importantly absorbs the most photons which in turn leads to faster bleaching cracking and other UV damage than a colour such as blue which would naturally reflect a lot of that energy back away from the finish.
I though yellow pad was for polish and brownish pad for cutting
Yes, the burgundy pad is a cutting pad typically used with compound and the yellow is the polishing pad typically used with a polish or light compound. Ultimate Compound can be used with either it is just a questions of how aggressive you want/need to get.
Is the effect permanent?
It does actually remove the oxidation if that is what you are asking. It does not mean that your paint exposed to time and elements would never possibly oxidize again.
Is this just one process? So you use the compound and it gives this shine? I imagine it wouldn't last long
The primary function of a compound is to remove defects in paint not give a high shine. Of course removing defects, especially oxidation, will dramatically improve the appearance of the paint. As shown in the video you would typically at minimum want to wax after compounding which would add gloss and protection.
@@meguiars What is the job of Polish? I see you can also get Maguires Polish and Wax. I assume you could do this as a 3 stage
Make sure you are prepared to undertake that kind of project.

No marks, no fading, water marks, scratches and any sign of oxidation. .
Way better
George Ezra look a like
Jeez
Your putting waterless wash and WAX on a car your just about to polish with a cutting compound, surely you want to he washing and then clay baring
They just wax it some poeple they repaint it.
Man you need to stop putting your fingers in paint and chemicals. Quick way to get liver failure.
Dont use masking tape across a panel, its just stupid!
This is for testing/demo purposes only. No one is recommending you do this without reason on you average detail.
stupid music. stop it.
Check back a few weeks later and it'll be faded again. Meguiar's is one of the worse products to use.
Must be a Turtle Wax employee. I've used both Mequiar's and Turtle Wax and both worked very well.
I bet that on this Golf is fake faded color on the roof and on the door and on the mirror housing. Prepared these surface for hours to demostrate this chemicals goodness. Sad to see this kind of cheating.
Wrong I’ve just done this myself on a vehicle in the same level of state and it really does work that well
Off to Supercheap to pick up some of that magic goo :)
