I use both. I’d say that if you get familiar with both, you really want to always have both available at your disposal. 3D to me is a better polish, and UC is a better compound IF you time the working time properly. If you get that right with a green pad, it works wonders. That said, if there’s one to take to the grave, it’s 3D. So flexible, lasts forever, no dust, and beyond consistent. MEGUIARS works great on model car finishes as well. Tried some on Tamiya LP40 lacquer (Metallic Black ) with nice results. Clear coat afterwards for some depth. Just manually do it with Novus cloth and a light touch. Practice on some spoons first.

MUC is really a great product. I just had an aluminum car carrier with 188 feet of tree branch scratches. Client loves Meguiar's products and always wants me to use them. MUC teamed with the Rupes Wool Polishing pads took out the scratches efficiently while not being too aggressive on the thin enamel paint.
I love these cheap vs expensive shootouts! Ultimate Compound is very easy and very effective compound to use. I have seen it do amazing stuff as well, when you throw it at certain applications . If you told me that all I could do is 1-step on a certain car, it would most likely be 1 of 5 compounds I choose. I know this compound probably better than I know any other. Very easy and forgiving, designed to just work for beginners. Great shootout! You picked two of my favorites!
Jimbo, nice test. To be more fair to the Ultimate compound, you said it gave just as good of results as the 3D one but since 3D one is a Hybrid Cutting Compound & Finishing Polish, and Ultimate is just a compound, wouldn't you need to finish off the Ultimate side with their Ultimate polish too for more apples to apples comparison? I bet with the Ultimate Polish added, it probably looks better than the 3D one!
I've used the meguiares ultimate compound many times and it does a fantastic job and polishes out nice. I don't like that it breaks down quick, it dusts and has a tendency to cake up on the pad. Long working time not only saves time, but it also saves on product. I've never used the 3d one product but I'm about to get some. I want something that cleans up easy and doesn't break down as quickly, and also polishes out well.
I've got some 3d on the way, and a chemical guys torq polisher. Got a deal on it, $109 for a kit with their 2 step compound and polish that I might use on my mom's car cause I'm using the 3d on my truck since I don't have a ton of clear coat to play with and don't want to compound the clear away lol
@@DownHillgamer The 3D one, one step compound and polish works really well. If you don't need heavy correction, the one step works really well and you can get a car done fairly quickly. It's probably my favorite for rapid results and excellent results on a daily driver.
Here's a tip for the viewers: apply the product on the pad first, and divide it over the entire pad, plus a few extra dabs, place the machine on the surface, and dab it on the surface three or four times and then turn on the machine...
DIY detailer used ultimate compound on my audi and the gfs bmw both dark paints, fantastic results even with some patches of deep marring. Found sticking to a 2 by 2 the best process so you can work it more and finish out with there ultimate polish 👍👍👍👍👍
I’ve been using UC and pair it with M205. Don’t underestimate the ultimate compound like he said, it can do serious damage lol I tried UC on 3000 grit before and I knew UC could take it out. Good stuff brotha 🤙🏻
Amen! I live on the East coast of Canada. I live within 500ft of the Atlantic Ocean, so salt water and road salt are extremely prevelant in this area. A black car looks white by the end of Winter, but a clean car and some Mequiars and you are good to go! I am actually going to the garage in the next hour to detail my 2018 Harley Davidson 48 and hit the Vivid Black paint with some Mequiars compound!
Great job, Thanks for the review. Was thinking about using ultimate compound to try and get out overspray. I have usrd black claybar on it and still see the haze of the overspray. Thank you.
Jimbo you need to make a video on the new wool pads rupes made along with buff and shine wool pads and which one is the best one when is comes to finishing
My concern is the clear coat. The ultimate products really adress that. The car should last many years. So why people use heavy cut? Makes no sence to me. The ultimate product is gentle on black paint and can be used when you need to. You want paint failure use heavier compounds. Very simple.
Different cars are cared and maintained differently. To keep it simple Daily Driver vs special interest vehicle. Special interest vehicles are generally better cared for and garaged.
Just finished with Mequiars Ultra cut 105. Removed swirls very well. However micro scratches are still there. Comments, suggestions. Oh,I used an orbital with orange pad. Thanks
I'm a professional detailer. At work, I use strictly Meguiar's compound and polish, paired with the MT300 DA and it does wonders. I also use Meguiar's at home alongside with Adam's Polishes products and Mother's. We call these "AutoZone" products because you can get them all there for pretty cheap. But as I could tell by your video, the quality of Meguiar's is just the same as a professional compound. I should say that some products do make a drastic difference when it's cheap vs expensive because that's how it works, but it's all about testing and finding what's good
I have both and l don't remember how much the Meguiar's cost but l recently bought a 16oz bottle of 3D One for $17 at my 3D retailer. Cheaper than Amazon.
Turth be told, eliminated 1000 grit scratches using 3D-ONE and a Lake Country yellow pad, all by hand. Granted, it took about 8 applications to get it done. Since then, I generally go as low as 3000 grit for the common swirls. It takes 1-2 applications to do the work.
in your opinion for a airbrusher guy on a budget is the ultimate compound a good go to product and what would you recommend as a final polish Thanks for the videos.
Not really. I use ultimate compound and ultimate polish myself. Polished one panel twice and compared it to the panel i did once and there was no difference. Might not always be the case but haven't noticed any difference on the cars i do
I actually hand-polished my ‘17, black Camry with Ultimate Compound. It took a long time, but it came out looking really good. Total cost for correction: $14!
Good channel just found it. It good idea what your doing. Are people really hating on you for these tests. Detailing snobs are worse than craft beer snobs
I been using a port a cable for14 years , and I do a lot of the top of the line cars , like Porsche. iT'S not always the buffer , It's the one using it.
Sure newer fancier machines are nice but, If you know what you are doing you don't need them. But I have got to say the Meguiars does a great job for how inexpensive it is.
You can see in the reflection of the bigger scan grip light that there was a huge difference when you moved it from the meguires side to the 3D. Meguires had a nice finish but a bit hazy. The reflection of the scan grip on the 3D side was very clear and had a lot of depth, no haze.
Just used it 1 step with orange pad on my own 2013 Durango. I was shocked very impressive. Very amusing bcuz it yielded great removal and finished out glossy at the same time🤘
I was very surprised using ult compound, along with ult polish, I don’t really buy any other compounds or polishes, I do send a little more on quality pads though 😎
I think the major advantage Meguiars Ultimate products is the access and price. I have used 3D hd cut plus and matching polish, end result was great. i don't think anyone can be a bigger hack than Ziebart. I am just an all around auto/ semi truck enthusiast. To me, there is nothing better than doing a project while listening to Metallica or Megadeth.
I use Meguiars m105 most of the time for toughjobs but I still reach for Ultimate Compound for those that's not too bad but where a polish doesnt give me what I'm after. Little dusting Easy wipe off Easy to find. OTC
I have it in my arsenal JB, one of my go too's is TLC by Jace Price. One of the reasons I love this product so much is one, It's very versatile, two finishes out very nice, three it was made by a detailer for detailer's. I gave it a slogan, smooth as butta, cuts like a knife. OGDetailer.
Using Mequiars Ultimate Compound, Polish, and Wax with a Chicago Pneumatic Platinum DA polisher, Lake Country backing pad, and Hex-Logic Buffing Pad Kit. Paid for itself with the first detail of my personal vehicle. Very pleased with the results and I did not spend an arm and a leg. Have a couple more cars to do and with the confidence these products induce, remove all hesitation for a do it yourselfer.
I had this old plastic orbital polisher that you fitted microfibre and wool bonnets to. Taking my time and knowing my machine and product, I did an as good job on my car panels as my mate that took his car to a pro detailer. Might have taken me a little longer cost me about 10% of his cost. Using a Rupes/Flex barely makes no diff if you're doing it for yourself
I don't own 3D one, but my understanding about the product is that it is an all in one. What this means is that, if you want to do a 2 step, first you team 3D one with a cutting pad and cut. Then, you change pads to a finishing pad, and do another pass with 3D one and finish. Never done it, but it is my understanding that this is the big deal with this product. Also, it is supposed to be a great One Step. Just combine it with a medium pad and go at it. Anyway, my 2 cents based on what I have heard of the product. I personally use D300 and D302, with Meguiar's microfiber pads. They work well. May get 3D one for a One step at some point. Finally, if you want something that can really cut, you need 3D ACA500... also known as the ultimate cutter.
I actually forgot how good of a product Meguiar's Ultimate Compound was. Haven't used it in years, but is definitely good stuff. I would like to see Ultimate Compound, 3D One, and Turtle Wax One and Done all side by side on different paint types etc. That would be an interesting showdown.
Why? There not at all the same. Meguiars uc is not a one step it needs meguiars ultimate polish followed. One and done and 3d one are a one step..... you can't compare them
I use the Ultimate Compound from time to time I buy Meg's 105 compound and I by Meg's 205 polish but they come out this year with Meg's 110 and Meg's 210 and its really good one of my favorite compounds to use is going to finish P1 then I like HD speed for all-in-one and I do like HD cut HD polish and HD finish got started on 3M perfect it like it but it dust a lot
Was thinking the same. The UC side looks hologrammed to hell and needs a second stage, the 3D side much closer to finished and would of been pretty much spot on with a few more passes.
Thx for the demo. I'm purchasing a new truck and want to know if I can just use the mcguires for routine polishing, is there anything else I can use to get the show room finish Thx Mike
Isn’t the 3D One a Compound+Polish, and the UC just a Compound? Not a fair comparison, but since UC did well even without a Polish, that says a lot to me...
The labeling on the ultimate compound says that it can even get perfect finish like a Polish but if you want even better results to use the ultimate Polish
I'm new in the ''da'' world but with my rotary tool (dewalt & yellow whool pad) i love using Ardex Product (alpha grit & 1500 plus) the alpha is a bit ''agressive'' but the grit melt by the time you polish with and work easy on 1000/1500/3000 sanding mark.... But here in Canada only the professional retailer can have those product 🤷🏻♂️
Seemed like there was a lot more product on the side of the meguiars when you worked it in but I presume that’s not the case , but it just spreads and breaks down different compared to 3D one but according to other reviews , the 3D one can finish down a lot better as the 3D one is a one step compound and polish but the meguiars is just a compound for the first step of 2-3 step process so comparing these two is not fair as they are both different products
I own a body shop and am looking for something better than the 3m options they don't seem to get the scratches out I usually 2000 then go over with 3 and always have to rebuff
I didn't get a good chance to see the swirls I do see something but curious from this step would you go to a Polish or a cleaner wax? For perfect result 0 scratches? I tried the ultimate compound I was impressed what I got using the drill da but I couldn't get the final result I wanted due to contamination on the panel still or wrong pad or haven't tried a cleaner wax but using the Polish didn't seem to get anything better then the compound did.
Joseph Connolly I have a whole bottle that I haven't used yet. I was thinking of mixing some with my m205 just for less dusting and used as a one step but not to sure. How do you like using 105? My other plan was just having distilled water in a spray bottle to help the dusting.
The sanding was to ‘create a problem’ safely that demonstrated the compound’s performance. You could probably wet-sand clear with 2500-3000 a lot of times (if done uniformly) without real concern. Even with modern clearcoats that are thin. If you really wanna go down the rabbit hole, research clearcoat leveling and ‘orange peel’ removal. Some use denim pads to do this. Not for the faint of heart, but an everyday affair at paint shops in the early stages of paint correction. Just practice on a junk hood before tackling your daily driver. Trust me.
And 3D 1 on say a used 3 year old paint. Littler tougher than swirls. Used chemical guys VSS and did t get it done. Was super thick. I'm usednto the Ole 3m white top.
Two questions. After compounding aren’t u supposed to polished? Also when do u do the IPA wipe down? Is it after the polish before the sealant? What about after compounding before the polishing as well? I’m really confused. Please help. Thanks in advance
Themachine hello I just doing paint correction so maybe you still need help Yes after compound is good to polishing is call 2 step correction os course change you pads!!! No need of IPA yet Since you still dealing with oils When you finished then wash quickly or not but definitely use a IPA 15% , no need of 25% or 30% as well u can used "eraser " great product then apply sealant , Always 2 coats to get 10 months, then after cured 24hous in the garage wax it If if if you did not start you work yet used first at the beginning a good clay like adam's then menzerna 1000 then menzerna sf2500 in my case extra step menzerna sf4000 IPA menzerna power lock plus , collinete 915 "cream of ettiquet " You will be amazed believe me

In fact the UP is a glaze. But you're right.
I've tried both. 3D One is the way to go.
Yup it’s a good product for sure
I’ve been using UC and pair it with M205. Don’t underestimate the ultimate compound like he said, it can do serious damage lol I tried UC on 3000 grit before and I knew UC could take it out. Good stuff brotha 🤙🏻
UC and 205 is a phenomenal combination. I’ve even used it on brass instruments!
Ultimate compound 7$ and some change in my local Target
Cost me 20$ at Indonesia'e Ace Hardware.
Cost me 37.. im in Australia.. figures..
$10 at walmart and advance auto in kentucky usa
Ultimate Compound is my go to compound. I live in South Carolina where the salt water kills your car paint.
Thank you.
I may be mistaken but most black clay bars are heavily abrasive and will actually haze your paint like fine sandpaper which needs to be polished out.
Been using a PC 7424 for the last 12 years. Still works like a champ!
I love Ultimate Compound! Just found it at my local Menards for 8.98! I am well stocked!
Score!
Thanks
3D one is $30 for 32 oz. That's not exactly expensive...
That's because he's pushing Meguire's at under $10.00, dummy.
3d one is also the polish in one though. So you could leave to product on and chase it with the polishing pad.
It takes 1-2 applications to do the work.
in your opinion for a airbrusher guy on a budget is the ultimate compound a good go to product and what would you recommend as a final polish
Thanks for the videos.
Great video!! Sorry I'm a little late to this party, but do you think this process would work on older Imron paint? Thanks for your comments
👍🏻 for the average look correction. Not easy to notice, UC may need a second polish finish step for extra shine.
Thanks man - glad to have you along. Yup the hate is getting a bit better but it’s still there. Lots of “internet detailers”
Ultimate compound beats everything at the store
Would be nice to know if this panel had a hard or soft clear coat on it for referrence.
Nice vid! Thank you!
Incidentally, you are using my two favorites..
I always thought you was supposed to move slowly when u used a cutting compound.. Otherwise it doesn't worked very well?
Jimbo, you tried Griots complete compound before? What is your thoughts?
Just used it 1 step with orange pad on my own 2013 Durango. I was shocked very impressive. Very amusing bcuz it yielded great removal and finished out glossy at the same time🤘
I was very surprised using ult compound, along with ult polish, I don’t really buy any other compounds or polishes, I do send a little more on quality pads though 😎
Love this vid and the commentary. Had to like and subscribe for that sign off. We appreciate you man
Thanks!
3D/HD Cut +, and Polish + are excellent products.
..absolutely nothing wrong with Porter Cable still use mine good as' any of my other's, cool demo video..✨☕
I use Meguiars m105 most of the time for toughjobs but I still reach for Ultimate Compound for those that's not too bad but where a polish doesnt give me what I'm after.
Little dusting
Easy wipe off
Easy to find. OTC
I have it in my arsenal JB, one of my go too's is TLC by Jace Price. One of the reasons I love this product so much is one, It's very versatile, two finishes out very nice, three it was made by a detailer for detailer's. I gave it a slogan, smooth as butta, cuts like a knife.
OGDetailer.
Nice!
Plz let me know whether the Ultimate Compound is temporary or its a permanent solution for light swirls and paint defects
it is a permanent fix as long as you keep up the right kind of washing @Indrajit Karmakar
Can I use a regular polishing machine with with either of these compounds or will it leave swirls?
One and done and 3d one are a one step..... you can't compare them
Porter Cable 7424xp and the pre XP model are my all time favorite tools.
Tried and true machines!
I use the ultimate compound however it dusts like crazy.
Mike, spray water as you are compunding.
It can dust. Usually from:
1. Over working / too much heat.
2. Contaminants on the paint.
3. Old residue still in used pads.
Unless it was lamp positioning, there is a night and day difference in results.
Absolutely, I’ll take the 3D any day
Was thinking the same. The UC side looks hologrammed to hell and needs a second stage, the 3D side much closer to finished and would of been pretty much spot on with a few more passes.
Thx for the demo. I'm purchasing a new truck and want to know if I can just use the mcguires for routine polishing, is there anything else I can use to get the show room finish
Thx
Mike
Weekend warrior. FG400 and TLC. Thanks for all your videos brother.
Thanks for watching them!
You Right Bro, U Dont Need All That New Age Shit To Get Great Results, Sum Guys Just Talk To Dam Much Without A Difference Being Made, 💯
Great comparison! UC is underrated.
Definitely is
Screw the haters. Love the channel!
👍🏻
I was big menzerna fan ,after tried sonax will never get back to any other brand
Love the Sf2500 and SF4000
Id love to see some imperial measurements like using a gloss meter & other things on each panel
Empirical?
Isn’t the 3D One a Compound+Polish, and the UC just a Compound? Not a fair comparison, but since UC did well even without a Polish, that says a lot to me...
The labeling on the ultimate compound says that it can even get perfect finish like a Polish but if you want even better results to use the ultimate Polish
I thought the ultimate was classed in reviews as a polishing compound I have used it by hand and it’s more polish than a harsh compound
The UC can finish also just by switching pads both are similar, the issue is the UC sucks with rotary polishers, it's made for hand or DA's
Best to compare old school compounds
3M vs 3D vs Presta Vs Surface Vs Malco vs sonax vs Manzerna
Seemed like there was a lot more product on the side of the meguiars when you worked it in but I presume that’s not the case , but it just spreads and breaks down different compared to 3D one but according to other reviews , the 3D one can finish down a lot better as the 3D one is a one step compound and polish but the meguiars is just a compound for the first step of 2-3 step process so comparing these two is not fair as they are both different products
I own a body shop and am looking for something better than the 3m options they don't seem to get the scratches out I usually 2000 then go over with 3 and always have to rebuff
There are a lot of better options than the 3M body shop stuff.
What's your beef with m105? I find it it's pretty versatile and more cost-effective than most other products. Is it the dusting?
Joseph Connolly tries out to fast and dust to much. It’s also almost double the price of the much better m100
@@autodetailingpodcast
Hopefully m110 will be better
Agreed!
Joseph Connolly I have a whole bottle that I haven't used yet. I was thinking of mixing some with my m205 just for less dusting and used as a one step but not to sure. How do you like using 105? My other plan was just having distilled water in a spray bottle to help the dusting.
Retailing
I tried to blend the two (homebrew M155) it gave me a longer working time and less dusting but came out streaky.
Great comparison! Why did you sanded the hood with 3000 first?
Should you always wet sand the car before polishing?
The sanding was to ‘create a problem’ safely that demonstrated the compound’s performance. You could probably wet-sand clear with 2500-3000 a lot of times (if done uniformly) without real concern. Even with modern clearcoats that are thin.
If you really wanna go down the rabbit hole, research clearcoat leveling and ‘orange peel’ removal. Some use denim pads to do this. Not for the faint of heart, but an everyday affair at paint shops in the early stages of paint correction.
Just practice on a junk hood before tackling your daily driver. Trust me.
Great video bro . I think ether product would be a great cheap way to over deliver and give your clients a real wow factor.
you got a new subscriber man keep up the good work💪🏽
thanks
What would you recommend for apparent sun fading on a motorcycle, that i assume has color through ABS body work ?
Can you use the 3D to polish as well using a polish pad?
And 3D 1 on say a used 3 year old paint. Littler tougher than swirls. Used chemical guys VSS and did t get it done. Was super thick. I'm usednto the Ole 3m white top.
yes you can.
Okay thanks.
After the compound is done ,then you can put the meguiars wax polish down or should you wait a day or so ,thanks good video
No need to wait. You can go straight to wax
Two questions. After compounding aren’t u supposed to polished?
Also when do u do the IPA wipe down? Is it after the polish before the sealant?
What about after compounding before the polishing as well?
I’m really confused. Please help. Thanks in advance
Themachine hello I just doing paint correction so maybe you still need help
Yes after compound is good to polishing is call 2 step correction os course change you pads!!! No need of IPA yet
Since you still dealing with oils
When you finished then wash quickly or not but definitely use a IPA 15% , no need of 25% or 30% as well u can used "eraser " great product then apply sealant , Always 2 coats to get 10 months, then after cured 24hous in the garage wax it
If if if you did not start you work yet used first at the beginning a good clay like adam's then menzerna 1000 then menzerna sf2500 in my case extra step menzerna sf4000 IPA menzerna power lock plus , collinete 915 "cream of ettiquet "
You will be amazed believe me
So I just purchased a blk Chevy impala that has a lot of swirling Mark's, watermarks, and some imperfections. I took it to a shop who wants $700 to correct it. Do you think I can do the job myself or leave it to the professionals??
