Yes, yes, yes!! "The Odd Couple" is a must see! It wasn't their first film together but, it was the movie that really established Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon as a great comedic duo. 😊

Minnesotan here - ice fishing is a time honored tradition. Nothing like sitting in the shed when you hear the ice cracks. Glad you watched this one - as others have said, watching them together is comedic gold.
These guys were two of the greatest actors of their generation. Jack Lemmon was known for comedy but in his later years, he did dramatic turns that were amazing and in fact, won him an Oscar. But before that, they were the original Odd Couple. You should check out that movie. It is a classic and they were both hilarious.
If you guys liked this, You need to check out the Original Odd Couple Movie, that the TV show was based on, Jack Lemon played Felix and Walter Matthau played Oscar.
Parts of this movie were filmed in my hometown in Minnesota when I was in third grade. I got to meet the director, and Anne Margaret talked my ears off in between takes. Such a nice woman. What a classic, amazing movie! (If you're interested, all the stuff from the opening credits sequence are places around my hometown).
These guys were amazing together (Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau). ... they did their first movie "The Odd Couple" in 1968 (should watch it on this channel). The second one they did was "The Front Page", also brilliant and should also be reacted to. It was the big draw for this movie that they were teamed up again.
Yes, Burgess Meredith played Mickey in "Rocky". He was also the Penguin in the 1960's "Batman" TV show with Adam West. You saw Kevin Pollack before in "A Few Good Men" and "The Usual Suspects"
Love this movie so much. Don't forget to watch the second one "Grumpier Old Men" also. It is just as funny. So glad that you did this for Thanksgiving. Makes my whole day.
Thanks you two for giving a grumpy old grandpa a good laugh watching this movie. The only person in the world, my father, who is in his nineties. Called me and wished me happy Thanksgiving. Neither of my brothers, nor my daughter, granddaughter, or daughter in law even remembered me this year. They all have busy lives and I lost my wife three years ago. I live alone and RUclips and Facebook are most of my daily social interactions except for the three times a month that I go into town to buy groceries and fill my water jugs. Other than that. It's just me, my dog and my RUclips family. I always look forward to your videos. So when I saw that y'all uploaded a movie reaction today I was very happy and it's one of the better movies that you two have done lately. So I had my Banquet Turkey TV dinner and the one beer I saved and then enjoyed watching y'all react to the movie. Believe it or not. You two made this lonely thanksgiving just a little less lonely. Thank you both! ♥️
I am sorry that you were alone this year. I am glad that you DID get a phone call & were remembered by your father. That was nice. I also find it nice to be able to turn to my favourite RUclipsrs for their nice "company" & reactions. It does make you feel like they are there with you. I think that next year you should take charge of the holiday (& any others) for yourself! Make a point of calling your various family members YOURSELF & not wait for them to make the 1st move that may not come. That way you WILL get the conversation, even if only for a few minutes for each case. Maybe you know some other people who might also be alone at the holidays? It certainly is not uncommon at all unfortunately. Do your best to make it happy & don't leave it to circumstances, as we all know, circumstances don't always work out in our favour! I don't know if it's possible for you, but if you have friends not too far away, or ones that could stay overnight/for the weekend, could YOU have a get together - even with neighbours & others you know without family near? If you can't cook, maybe the bunch of you could come up with a sort of plan on how to have a potluck with (semi) holiday foods (as you did alone - but maybe a little better ie. someone buys turkey sausage & cuts it into chunks & mixes it with a few boxes of stuffing & some canned cranberry sauce (heated of course) for on top. Someone buys a pumpkin pie & ice cream or whipped cream. Maybe someone brings apple cider & bread rolls. Then there are bunches of salads in a bag these days with the salad dressing packets & toppings included. They are a little more expensive, but maybe okay for a special occasion. I don't know if you have Campbell's - Gardenay soups where you live. They are sold in the tetra cartons next to canned soups & they have a really good squash soup variety. These are just suggestions to think about. If nobody is making something better for you (& it is important for you especially), then maybe work at it (& be creative if you have to) to make it good for yourself! (Even if the best you can do is watching your favourite RUclipsrs watch a movie you have "saved" for the day & eating an extra special treat for yourself that day in food or dessert form [or both! - it IS the holiday after all!].) I know that you did do this to the best of your ability this year, but if you start planning now (for Easter if you celebrate & then for the others far in advance, maybe each year could be even a little bit nicer than the last. If money is tough, you might even be able to start saving literally just a dollar or 2 a week or so to have a bit more for your holidays to treat yourself a little extra more.) I hope you don't mind my suggestions & think that I am being too intrusive. I DO know what it can be like! When you see this note, it will be in 2024 - so Happy Belated New Year (by a few days)! I hope that this year will turn around for you & be a lot better & be the start of much better times ahead. Take care. 🙂
The thing about Minnesota Winters and that fish is, things freeze solid. That fish would need to un-freeze, just like pulling it out of the refrigerator's freezer. I live about 20 minutes from where they partial made this in Wabasha, MN.
I have heard good things about Wabasha. I have heard as small towns go, the people are pretty friendly. I don't know how they would be with people like me...but ever since this film came out back in 93...I have kind of wanted to live there. I love to fish and it just seems like a fun community while being small enough to feel relatively safe.
@@WolfsDE Most Minnesotans really don't give a rat's about others doing. We have all here, including a trans that goes to the American Legion post, and nobody says squat about. If not, Wabasha try driving SE to a town with 2.5 colleges with plenty, like you.
@@WolfsDEI've lived in that town for most of my life! I don't share enough of the small, quiet, riverside town interests to stay in Wabasha as a young adult, but I'd say that it's pleasant for those who do enjoy that lifestyle. It's close enough to cities like Winona and Rochester if you ever need a change on a free day or evening.
Ann Margaret was the female lead She was considered a huge sex symbol in the 60's. You would love seeing her in the musical Bye Bye Birdie with Dick Van Dyke.
I was on a forum I frequent some time back and they asked - 'Sophia Lauren or Marilyn Monroe?' and I respond 'Ann Margret?' Raquel Welch was about the only other one that could get me that revved up.
@jackieknows9129 Ann-Margaret also starred opposite Elvis Presley in one of his movies after he returned from the Army. Can anyone please 🥺 please tell me the title? I have forgotten it over time.
My best friend and I saw this movie in the theater back when it was released. We realized that we would eventually be like Mathau and Lemon. So - for many years we referred to each other as Moron and Putz. Watching this movie now makes me realize how much I miss him. RIP to my buddy, he passed in 2016... Thank you for this wonderful reaction!
Jack Lemmon is my favorite actor -- and one of America's greatest. He was like the Tom Hanks of his day -- playing the everyman. For a B&W comedy treat, check out "The Apartment" (1960) nominated for 8 Oscars (and other awards) and the first role for Shirley MacLaine, who also is a legend now.
I have been trying FOREVER to get a USA-playing copy of his film "Macaroni." I loved that movie so much. But it's impossible. Another of his that I love that he's in with Shirley MacLaine is "Irma La Douce."
They come back with another one "Grumpier Old Men", But Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon are good friends and have done several movies together. "Out to Sea" where Walter's character signs them up to work on a cruise ship. My favorite Jack Lemmon movie is "My Fellow Americans" with James Garner (from Maverick), where they are ex-Presidents running for office again.
Great pick, enjoyed watching this with you. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon were extremely close friends dating back to the movie The Fortune Cookie in 1966 where they first worked together. Ann Margaret was 52 when she played this role..... Not bad.
How did I miss this movie? I've never seen The Fortune Cookie. I need to find it! I always thought The Odd Couple was their first movie together. Thanks!! X)
The blonde who played Melanie is an actress named "Daryl Hannah". She starred in a movie with Tom Hanks, John Candy, and Eugene Levy called "Splash". It's a great rom-com that I think you guys would love! I believe it was Tom Hanks' very first movie, too! 😃🧜♀️
While I too know her as the mermaid from "Splash", I think most people know her as the replicant Pris from "Blade Runner" or as "Roxanne" in Steve Martin's modern remake of "Cyrano de Bergerac". She also starred as Robert Redford's client Chelsea in "Legal Eagles" and as the one eyed assassin in "Kill Bill Vol.2".
To answer your question about snow in Minnesota, I’d say yes, for the most part, it is like this every winter. It was filmed in Minnesota too, btw. But what I’ve found living here for the last 13 years or so, once the snow starts falling and sticking, which can be as early as October, it just stays and piles on and piles on until about April. Some winters are worse than others, but I can’t remember a winter that I’ve been here that I didn’t have piles of snow next to my sidewalk or driveway, several feet high, all winter long.
Sometimes, the snow melts away in March before piling back on in April. Our seasons are usually early winter, heavy winter, still winter, and road constructions.
This movie is set and filmed in Minnesota. Ice fishing is fun. The "buildings" are called fish houses but some people call them shanty's. The come in all shapes and sizes and they are heated. There are the hard core folks that will actually camp out on the ice in their fish house. The ice is normally around 2 feet thick. It's a lot of fun.
Please, please do the second one! I watched this with my grandfather, he loved it. Both of these movies are gems!!! Love you guys, and love the fact you are into this movie!!!!
Stars: 1. Ann Margaret- the red head she’s a singer and dancer and actress, she was in a movie with Elvis!! And she was a sex symbol! 2. Kevin Pollack - you saw him in A Few Good Men 3. Darryl Hannah- you saw her in Steel Magnolias 4. Burgess Meredith - he is “Mick” from Rocky
Love this movie!!! Should watch the "Odd Couple" with Matthau & Lemmon. Also Jack Lemmon with Henry Fonda and James Cagney, "Mr. Roberts" a comedy drama.
Get another load of great Grandpa Gustafson outtakes in Grumpier Old Men! Besides Mickey in Rocky, Burgess Meredith was also the first actor to play Batman's Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot, a couple decades before Danny DeVito. His was the more dapper version, waddling around with a top hat and monocle, and he remains a favorite among old Batman fans. You might have also seen him in one of the most famous episodes of Twilight Zone. He was Henry Bemis, the unfortunate bookworm who survived a nuclear holocaust. His career goes back much further than that: he starred in an early classic version of Of Mice and Men, and appeared in almost every genre possible, from drama to westerns to war films. Of course, just about every actor in this movie was a legend in some way or another. Buck Henry, who played the villain, was co-creator of Get Smart (with Mel Brooks) as well as a screenwriter and actor in lots of memorable films.
Great selection of movies. The sequel is pretty good also. If you decide you are into flicks about old guys try "Second-hand Lions". It's a great cast, a great yarn and a lot of fun. Good job with this one.
Ann Margaret was 52 when this film was made. Both Ann Margaret and Sophia Loren are in Grumpier Old Men. You may not know them, but the hearts of old guys beat a little faster just hearing their names.
You guys have got to check out more of Walter Matthau and Jack Lennon. They are absolutely amazing actors they were in so many funny films make sure you guys watch the sequel to this Burgess Meredith will make you cry he's so funny
Jay & Amber Those iconic actors played John and Max were Jack Lemmon (John) and Walter Matthau (Max). Jack and Walter acted together in other movies such as iconic 1968's The Odd Couple. Both of them returned 30 years later in The Odd Couple II. Both of them died about year apart: Walter in 2000 while Jack in 2001. But their acting will live on in classics.
I really appreciate your reaction to this classic. One of the things that a lot of people miss in this movie is how John was a public school teacher for, what, 36 years(?), and John can’t even afford to live in the house any more in retirement. School teacher retirements, particularly in small towns, are an absolute joke.
1) It is interesting that John and Max's friendship was torn apart by a woman who came between them and stayed apart until a woman came and drew them back together". 2) Sitting in the sauna and then running and jumping, usually into a snow bank, is a Finnish tradition; I was so surprised to see it added in this movie; they really did an excellent job building the characters and representing small-town Minnesota in this movie. 3) Nearly every lake in Minnesota, which is called the "land of 10,000 lakes", is encrusted with ice houses from when the ice is thick enough to be safe to when it gets too thin in the spring. The same people set up their shanties on the same lakes every year, so it's like a little community all its own out on the ice. 4) I'll echo everyone else here and say you must watch the sequel "Grumpier old Men"; it is just as good and just as Minnesota (though less cold looking).
This is my 9yr old grandson's favorite movie...LOL!! You wouldn't think that a KID this day and time would like something like this...but bless his heart...HE LOVES IT!!! He made his mom buy it for him....and also the second one too. HILARIOUS movie!!!
What made this so special for those if us who where around when this came out in 1993 was the fact that these were all award winning actors in there day. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau both won accademy awards. Ossie Davis was not just an exceptional actor, director and writer but he was an activist in the civil rights movement in the 60’s along side of Martin Luther King. Ann-Margaret was a very sexy singer, dancer and actress who also won awards. She starred in the movie adaptation of The Who’s Tommy as well as starring along side Elvis in Viva Las Vegas. Yes, Burgess Meredith played Mickey in Rocky. He was a very prestigious TV, Stage and movie actor who’s career spanned from 1945 until his death in 1997. The then younger two actors Daryl Hannah and Kevin Pollak were also well known actors. Daryl played the mermaid along side Tom Hanks in Splash. Kevin Pollak was in A Few Good Men with Tom Cruise. Kevin is not only an excellent actor but also a comedian and does crazy good impressions of people. Like Jack Nicholson also in A Few Good Men which probably made for an interesting set. This movies holds up well. Loved your reaction to the out takes.
Both of those grumpy old men (Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon), are legendary actors who have been in many, many great movies. Now you have to watch the sequel, Grumpier Old Men. Ann Margaret was one of the sexiest women ever! In 1964 she starred in Viva Las Vegas, with Elvis Presley and their onscreen heat was palpable, which led them into offscreen heat as well. Not only did she have curves that made every other woman jealous (and man drool), but she had such a sparkling personality that just made her irresistable. Even in this movie, she is still a very attractive woman for her age. "He reminds me of Mickey, from Rocky." Probably because it IS Mickey from Rocky (Burgess Meredith). This movie was not only very funny, but it had a lot of heart and touched the feelings as well. The way it ended tied everything up nicely and just left me happy and satisfied. Love this movie!
I grew up in Minnesota. Yep, winters are that cold, and there's usually that much snow. Wabasha is a real town, southeast of St. Paul, right on the Mississippi River. It's beautiful there! So many things in this film made me laugh outright because they are SO Minnesota, right down to the last name Gustufson. It's nice seeing you enjoying it.
@@SarahManleyYep, and they'll do things like plunging into freezing February water as if it were a summertime swimming pool. In all my time living there, I've never understood it, but those who participate seem to find it delightful.
@@lsmit6121 think of it like sweet and spicy foods. Or Sour Patch Kids candy. People love to have the sensory overload. Going from super hot to snow cold can really “wake up” the skin. They do it in Scandinavian countries-and MN is traditionally Swedish/Norwegian/Danish/German immigrants.
A great duo of actors in so many great films. The sequel to this is just as funny, as well as The Odd Couple & one that isn’t as well known, Out to Sea.
It is Mickey from Rocky! Burgess Meredith! He's been in many movies, a great actor. Was also The Penguin in the campy, great live action Batman & Robin live action tv show so many of us kids grew up on, even in reruns in the 70s.
Being from Minnesota this is a special movie. I've had multiple friends married in that church and I have tipped a few beers back in that bar. The second movie is almost as good as the first in my opinion.
You have seen a lot of these actors before- John’s daughter was played by Daryl Hannah who you saw as Annelle in Steel Magnolias , Max’s son was in a Few Good Men among other films, that was the actor who played Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore, Ann Margaret was the red head who has a long career going back to Elvis days. That was Burgess Meredith who played Mickey in Rocky. The two leads Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon are legends. PLEASE watch Grumpier Old Men
The son was in "A Few Good Men." He was part of the Jag team with Tom Cruise and Demi Moore. But you must watch "The Odd Couple" with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon. Also Walter Matthau is in a serious role in the suspense thriller "Charade". You won't be sorry.
Minnesota has four distinct seasons. We often get snow as early as October, with a few wicked cold or blizzards on Halloween over the decades. Other times we have no snow even come Christmas. Right now, day after Thanksgiving, we’ve had no snow accumulation at all. Chilly, not even bone chilling. So, you dress a little warmer. It’s been a mild winter so far. Though we may have snow through end of March. You should visit! It’s lovely up here. 😊
Thank you guys! Grumpy old man spending Thanksgiving alone but got to watch this with you. One of my all-time favorites. As others have said, the sequel is pretty darn good too. Thank you for sharing your time with us. You're both too cute for words!
That's Minnesota baby!! As someone who has lived the majority of life in lovely beautiful Minnesota; this movie is the most accurate portrayal of Minnesota I've ever seen. I know men like that!! Don't forget the sequel Grumpier Old Men. Minnesota in the summer with Sophia Loren. Also has great outtakes at the end. ENJOY!!
For extra special viewing, I recommend watching the AFI Lifetime Salute to Jack Lemmon. Walter Matthau is BRILLIANT! Their friendship is so real and warm, it’s lovely.
You know Walter methau and Jack Lennon. The two gentlemen that played the grumpy Old Men died one year apart and they were good friends for most of their life in real life. Walter Wynn first one year later to the day Jack died
They died almost exactly (4 days shy) of one year from each other. They were good friends in real life. I still love this movie. Great memories.
my mom said they are buried close to each other too

These guys were amazing together (Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau). ... they did their first movie "The Odd Couple" in 1968 (should watch it on this channel). The second one they did was "The Front Page", also brilliant and should also be reacted to. It was the big draw for this movie that they were teamed up again.
Their first film together was The Fortune Cookie in 1966 for which Walter Matthau won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Burgess Meredith also played the Penguin on the Batman TV show, Popeyes dad in the movie with Robin Williams, and the trainer in Rocky.
He was also in several very good Twilight Zone episodes.
Nice reaction, and that IS Mickey from Rocky. The son you recognized was an attorney in A Few Good Men
Thanks you two for giving a grumpy old grandpa a good laugh watching this movie.
Wish I knew you and could have wished you a happy Thanksgiving!! Even though you were alone I hope you had a pretty good one!
Take care. 🙂
3 of the greatest actors together in one movie! That's what made this movie so amazing!"❤👍💯✌🇨🇦🤣
Yes, the grandfather was Mickey from Rocky. He was also the Penguin in the original 1960s Batman.
Grumpier Old Men the sequel is funny as heck too.
Viva Las Vegas with Elvis
Another of his that I love that he's in with Shirley MacLaine is "Irma La Douce."
perfect description of Jack Lemmon, the Tom Hanks of his day!!!
Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacClaine along with director Billy Wilder in 1963 for the romantic comedy, "Irma La Douce".
Yes, they would love The Apartment! And they should watch “Some Like It Hot”! ❤💃🏻
And Shirley McLaine also played "Weezer" in Steel Magnolias.
Burgess Meredith was an absolute joy. I miss him ALL THE TIME.
Such a hilarious movie! You'll love the sequel 'Grumpier Old Men'. There are more 'Pop' outtakes at the end of that one too.
Thanks!! X)
@@xzonia1You should watch it, it's great. Directed by the great Billy Wilder. Walter Matthau won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
That scene where she comes out of the sauna and then rolls in the snow is sorta common. It's awesome.
The blonde who played Melanie is an actress named "Daryl Hannah". She starred in a movie with Tom Hanks, John Candy, and Eugene Levy called "Splash". It's a great rom-com that I think you guys would love! I believe it was Tom Hanks' very first movie, too! 😃🧜♀️
They may also know her from "Steel Magnolias." "Splash" is the cutest movie ever!
She was also Anell in "Steel Magnolias "
It was Tom Hank's first movie but he was in Bosom Buddies before that.
@@KrazyIndeed
Actual Lee: Tom Hanks first movie appearance was the slasher flick "He knows you're alone" (1980).
The outtakes at the end of these movies are still the best.
Please, please do the second one! I watched this with my grandfather, he loved it. Both of these movies are gems!!! Love you guys, and love the fact you are into this movie!!!!
@user-qz8lyrgb7k "Lesbians yummy!"
"Cocoon" is an AMAZING movie. Super funny, sad and supernatural!
Stars:
1. Ann Margaret- the red head she’s a singer and dancer and actress, she was in a movie with Elvis!! And she was a sex symbol!
2. Kevin Pollack - you saw him in A Few Good Men
3. Darryl Hannah- you saw her in Steel Magnolias
4. Burgess Meredith - he is “Mick” from Rocky
The outtakes at the end are my favorite part of the movie. You can tell they had fun making the movie.
Love Grumpy and Grumpier Old Men.... My Fellow Americans is another good movie with Jack Lemmon in it
I love that one! "Hail to the chief, he's the chief and he needs hailing"
One of my all-time favorites. Part two next!!!!!!!
One of the best movies I can remember as a kid! Now, I’m a Grumpy older man! Lol Great Reaction!
My folks lived in a small town in Minnesota......trust me when I say this is a very ACCURATE DEPICTION OF SMALL TOWN MINNESOTA 👍🤣
The outtakes are just as hilarious
Getting out of the sauna and rolling in the snow is a rush, and then Yes, you definitely need to run back inside to warm up again.
Second-hand Lions is another excellent choice!
Loved Second-Hand Lions.
Jay & Amber
Those iconic actors played John and Max were Jack Lemmon (John) and Walter Matthau (Max). Jack and Walter acted together in other movies such as iconic 1968's The Odd Couple. Both of them returned 30 years later in The Odd Couple II. Both of them died about year apart: Walter in 2000 while Jack in 2001. But their acting will live on in classics.
They were very good friends and Jack Lemmon spoke at Walter's Funeral, they were also buried near each other in the same cemetery.
Walter Matthau is an excellent villain in "Charade" with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. You guys might enjoy that. I just love your reactions.
I really appreciate your reaction to this classic. One of the things that a lot of people miss in this movie is how John was a public school teacher for, what, 36 years(?), and John can’t even afford to live in the house any more in retirement. School teacher retirements, particularly in small towns, are an absolute joke.
I'm from Minnesota & I thought the winter last year would never end. The snow would never stop.
How about Max completely redeeming himself at the end! There's a heart of gold in there lol
The 2nd one is great as well. These two men were an amazing duo every time they were on screen together over the decades.
I literally was watching this a few days ago and I said "I hope ROB SQUAD reacts to this soon." What a wonderful thanksgiving treat!
And there's a sequel!!! Grumpier old men! You guys have to see it.
The 2nd movie is also hilarious!
The oldest grandpa is out of control!!
PLEASE WATCH ..THE APARTMENT...with Jack Lemmon. One of the Best movies ever made
Both of those grumpy old men (Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon), are legendary actors who have been in many, many great movies.
One of the best movies of the 90s and part two is just as good.
The way Amber said, "It's a wedding!" is why everyone loves her soooo much!!!
Yeah we can get a fair bit of snow. Not as much as places like Buffalo but what falls generally sticks around all winter until spring
These two men were in 10 films together. Eight of them, they were the stars, or co-stars, of the movies. They just worked so well together.
I remember the days Walter Matteau and Jack Lemon died. Was a huge loss. You have to watch the sequel as well as The Odd Couple (both movies).
Ann Margret looked fantastic for a 53 year old!! Especially when she came out of her house and rolled around in the snow!
Wabasha MN has had a Grumpy Old Men festival every year since this movie came out.
@@SarahManley Oh cool! That's awesome!
“He reminds me of Mick from Rocky.” 🤣 Yeah he reminds me of Mick from Rocky also Jay. 😂
The two guys Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were in a ton of movies and they are both Oscar winners!! They were in a few more movies together!!
Don't forget the original odd couple 1,970s
Love this movie and the sequel. As my grandpa loved to say, “ they don’t call it MinneSNOWda” for nothing…lol
There's also a sequel that's equally funny. "Grumpier Old Men"
Minnesota has four distinct seasons.
ENJOY!!
I'm so happy you are giving this movie a chance. A great movie, and it's sequel is just as good.
Love this movie and Grumpier Old Men also. Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon were hilarious together
