Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are legends. They've done a bunch of movies together including the sequel to this, called Grumpier Old Men which is also great and worth checking out. Also, check them out in The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple, The Odd Couple II, The Front Page, Buddy Buddy and Out to Sea.
Burgess Meredith, the father of Jack Lemmon's character also played Mickey Goldmill in the Rocky movies. He was a scene stealer in this and the sequel. So funny!

They get grumpier in the sequel and I simply can't recommend it highly enough. Comedies just don't get much better than this pair of films.
One thing I particularly love about these films is how they showcase the genuine, real life friendship between Walter Matthou and Jack Lemmon. Although they are great and tallanted actors, they weren't acting here. That's just letting them be who they are and filming the magic.

You've seen John's father, the really old grumpy old man, Burgess Meredith in the first two ROCKY movies. He was Rocky's trainer. But he's had a very long and memorable career and maybe his best role was back in the 30s as a the main character in the John Steinbeck classic, OF MICE AND MEN. Great movie, by the way. Put it on your list of must sees.
You've also seen Max's son, Kevin Pollak, as one of THE USUAL SUSPECTS and as the assistant defense attorney in A FEW GOOD MEN. And his wife Daryl Hannah you've seen if you caught BLADE RUNNER, KILL BILL 1&2, SPLASH or ROXANNE. For a while in the '80s she was a real hot porperty
As to the title characters, Jack Lemmon and Walther Matthau both are A-Listers that are kind of hard to miss if you've seen any movies from the 50s to the 90s. Often cast in light hearted comedies and a few dramas too. And they were also commonly paired together in Neil Simon movies back in the '60s (most notably in THE ODD COUPLE) which is why they were cast again for this one. It gave it a nostalgic appeal. For another great modern movie where they appeared take a look at the OLIVER STONE iconic 1992 masterpiece, JFK. (One of my top ten all time favorites).
The other familiar face from 60s cinema is Ann-Margret (Ariel) whom you may enjoy in the 1960s remake of the old 1930s John Wayne classic, STAGECOACH. The critics at the time hated it. But critics are often politically motivated. It is actually quite good as '60s westerns go.

Great reaction, Madison. Subverting expectations (or "not giving the audience what they want") does seem to be the new norm in movies these days.

I love that Kevin Pollock said about this film in an interview, that Matthau actually hated the script and only did this movie because it paid him a million dollars to do it and he happened to owe his bookie a million dollars at the time. So the only reason that legend is in this is because of his gambling problem.

Chick Marx had a similar movie for money motivation.
As had Norm Macdonald...or so the Germans would have you believe.

Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon made several movies together and each of them is a hoot. I think my favourite is "Buddy buddy", last movie directed by Billy Wilder. Helping them is Klaus Kinsky in an unusual role.

You need to check out The Odd Couple, you'd love it. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are chemistry incarnate.
Burgess Meredith (Gustafson Sr.) is a legend with a long list of television and movies behind him. He's probably best known for roles in Rocky, The Twilight Zone, and the 1966 Batman series.

There might not ever be a comedic chemistry like the one that Lemmon and Mathau had. They managed to pair up perfectly for this to be both really funny and really captivating as Max and John.

'Wizard of Oz' were on TV every year. later, the musical great tenth anniversary show of ' Les Miz' was an every year feature on PBS. haven't seen that on TV lately either. probably good, commercials ruin everything. Ya an always rewatch Casablanca and Lonesome Dove.

From somebody who lived all his life in Chicago, that snow is just normal winter snow. I've been through storms that piled up above the cars by morning. Last year was my first winter in NC and I don't miss the snow one bit. You can have it all.

Jack Lemmon is an Academy Award winning icon. Too many films to list, but DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, GLENNGARRY GLENN ROSS, SOME LIKE IT HOT, THE ODD COUPLE are but a few. Burgess Meredith was another well respected actor with a fantastic resume. Walter Matthau ALSO has a long list of fine films.
Your summary and reaction is superb as always! Have a great Thanksgiving Ms. Madison
