Grandpa Gustufsun was played by Burgess Meredith, who had a very long career in the theater and cinema, though most people would probably recognize him from his portrayal of Micky in Rocky.
One of the rare films I think you should watch the sequel. It feels like one long story about these 2 guys, but the sequel we see more things tied together. Plus, it adds Sophia Loren to the cast. Also, Burgess Meredith is pure gold and steals every scene he's in.
This movie holds a very special place in my heart. When I was a little boy in 1994 I was visiting relatives for Christmas. Somebody rented 'Grumpy Old Men' on VHS. Four generations of my family sat and watched this movie and laughed. Everything from 80+ to 10 years old were sitting around the TV at Christmas laughing together. It is one of my fondest memories of Christmas from childhood. Any movie that can bridge that massive gap in generations and bring people together in laughter is something very special. I'm glad y'all liked it so much.
Matthau and Lemmon was a movie power couple. They are just perfect together. My personal favorite of theirs, and the best comedy I ever saw is "The Odd Couple". Absolutely genius movie.
@Asia and BJ what your watching is two of the top 100 actors of all time in Lemon and Matthau. Amazing flick and a FU to the Hollywood machine that never makes alot of content for the 40 and older crowd. They still are amazing with unreal chemistry was a treat to see you both come to love this. Watch the sequel it is one of the rare times the sequel is better then this original.
Now, Grumpier Old Men is a must! The sequel. This movie was that successful. 4 Hollywood Legends, Burgess Meredith 2 Oscars, Jack Lemmon 2, Walter Matthau 1, the beautiful Ann Margaret 2 nominations.
My dad took me to the theaters to see this when it came out and the whole room was falling out on the floor. My dad was a big time fisherman too, so a lot of the fishing jokes really hit him hard. We went back every Saturday and watched it again for like a month straight! It was an instant classic. You should also watch Grumpier Old Men also, great sequel and I'd say just as funny as the first one! And it was actually good as far as sequels go, followed right after the first movie and tied up a LOT of loose ends. DEFINITELY worth a watch!!!
"You guys definitely need to see the sequel to this movie called 'Grumpier Old Men,' which is one of the best sequels of all time! Both of these movies are gems." ❤️💎
The oldest guy that you said looked familiar he was the trainer in Rocky!! Mick!! Burgess Meredith, he was in a lot of movies and Tv shows! Dirty Bloopers !!
Lemmon and Matthew had great chemistry! You should check out their pairing in The Odd Couple. Both kicked out by their wives they take an apartment together. But Felix Unger (Lemmon) is a hypochondriac neat freak and Oscar Madison (Matthau) is a gruff sports writer slob. It was later made into a pretty good TV series with different actors, but the movie is the best!
Everybody knows Burgess Meredith was in Rocky, but he's also been a fan favorite of comic book nerds for being the first screen actor to play Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin, in the Batman TV series more than two decades before Danny DeVito made him a little monster. Even before that, he was Henry Bemis, the sad bookworm in one of the most famous episodes of Twilight Zone. He's a versatile actor who has been in everything forever, comedies, drama, westerns, war films, everything.
Now y'all need to do the original Odd Couple (same two dudes, just decades before this film) and Grumpier Old Men (one of the very few sequels that stands up to the original, if not surpasses it). Love to see you two digging into this legendary comedic duo!!
In Grumpier Old Men you get to see another legend Sophia Loren , for years she was considered by many to be one of the most beautiful women in the world!!
Ann Margaret / Ariel was in many Elvis Presley movies acting, singing and dancing. Daryl Hannah/Melanie (daughter) was the one eyed nurse in Kill Bill I and II.
Elvis and Ann-Margaret were only in one movie together Viva Las Vegas. They had a steamy love affair during and for a while after. In addition the movie was one of Elvis’ best and the songs were excellent!! She was so sexy!!
My father always loved these actors. And sometimes my dad seemed like Walter Matthau as a grumpy old man. By the way, these guys were in the original odd couple movie way back when.
The 5 main characters (played by Walter Matthieu, Jack Lemmon, Ann Margret, Burgess Meredith and Ossie Davis) all had/have STELLAR careers! Ann Margaret is the only still with us. Saw this when it was released in the theaters and it’s still great. Burgess Meredith was the highlight. You NEED to watch the sequel. The smiles on your faces were priceless watching this.
Walter and Jack were close friends for most of their lives. Walter past away first and almost exactly a year later Jack followed. They are buried in the same graveyard near each other. They were in over 20 films together.
The Odd Couple is one of their most famous pairings. My FAVORITE Matthau film is the comedy Hopscotch. He plays a veteran CIA agent who decides to burn his crappy boss by writing a tell-all book rather than be forcibly retired. Fab. And don't miss the fabulous Jack Lemmon in the memorable comedy Some Like it Hot with co-stars Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe.
My family adores Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon. We always watched Odd Couple and Odd Couple 2 and Out to Sea together and they never failed to make us laugh. We still quote their movies sometimes. I highly recommend those movies
So glad folks are watching this film..these two guys together were something special. Great film to watch during the holidays. The sequel is just as great.
Both Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon have made other movies together like The Odd Couple, Fortune Cookie, The Front Page, Buddy, Buddy, Out to Sea & The Odd Couple 2. They were also in JFK & The Grass Harp, but they weren't the main stars & in JFK they had seperate scenes. Please, PLEASE do the sequel Grumpier Old Men! It might not be in the same height as the 1st movie, but it's just as a great as well, funny as hell & it also has hilarious bloopers 😂😉🙂
Such a feel-good movie. Walter & Jack were such a great team. Think I'll watch this in time for Christmas. May I also recommend the sequel "Grumpier old men", just as funny.
*I grew up with my grandparents. They were my legal guardians as a kid* I LOVE that you did this film. I watched this every winter with my Grampa! Edit: Let's go! Get it! Get it!
Acting legends. I don't know why but of all the movies Walter Matthau has done I loved him in this and Dennis the Menace😂 Jack Lemmon was amazing in Glen Garry Glen Ross
If you liked that scene with Ann Margret rolling around in the snow then you must see her when she was much younger rolling around in a room full of pork and beans and milky froth in the movie "Tommy" by "The Who" during the song "Champagne".
Do y'all remember those movies where they show big cities like New York or LA and they always show a person walking down the sidewalk talking to himself in an agitated manner? The older I get the more I understand that person
Two of the greatest actors of their generation. I think you would love the classic The Odd Couple. I was so happy to see these guys returns to the screen in this movie. I always love your reactions. And especially some of the looks A’ja gives to you BJ lol.
This movie and the next one, Grumpier old men, filmed most of the exterior shots in and around my hometown of Annandale, Minnesota, around the time I graduated from high school. Our town motto was "The Haert of The Lakes" we had a lot of icehouse town for ice fishing. You can walk on the ice around 1 foot thick. And be able to drive on ice when it is 4 feet or more thick ice. But that's more around mid-January to the first week in March.

I grew up in the 70’s on Chicago’s west side in the hood. You’d never guess that based on my musical tastes. Being poor, my entertainment was spending hours traveling up and down the radio bandwidth listening to every kind of music. It was a gateway to learning about different cultures and countries, but one genre of music that I absolutely hated was classical music. I just couldn’t stand it. Wouldn’t you know it, years later one of my kids took up the violin, becoming classically trained at one of the best conservatories in the country. Now, understanding the genre, composers, stories behind the pieces, and the skill and artistry needed I love listening to classical music. It’s as soulful to me as listening to the Staple Singers.
Having a lifelong friend means having someone to reminisce on some of your oldest memories with. They're the other half of your memories. It's a real blessing...and when you're old it's just your privilege to be grumpy. Haha, it's to be expected.
Walter Matthau and Jack lemmon are two of the best comedic actors of their time they worked so well together in so many films. Please watch the sequel to this. Will fall out of your chair laughing
This movie introduced me to Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. One of the greatest comedy duos ever! Besides this, The Odd Couple is their best movie together!
Actors in this movie you may have seen before but failed to recognize: Kevin Pollack (Max's son) was one of THE USUAL SUSPECTS and was also Tom Cruise's assistant defense attorney in A FEW GOOD MEN and the Casino front man in CASINO. Darryl Hannah (Gustafson's daughter) was also the one eyed assassin Ellie Driver in KILL BILL and she was one of the androids in BLADE RUNNER if you saw that. Made famous though as the mermaid in the Tom Hanks classic, SPLASH Burgess Meredith (Gustafson's father) Was Rocky's trainer in ROCKY 1 and 2. But he had a very loing and illustrious career as a support actor. And I highly recommend one of his earliest films, OF MICE AND MEN (from the '30s) where he actually had the lead and won an Oscar for his performance I believe. Buck Henry (the IRS agent) is maybe best known as a comedy writer and for his frequent appearances on SNL. You will see him in the fantasy dramedy DEFENDING YOUR LIFE or the dark comedy CATCH 22 if you ever get around to reacting to them, both highly recommended. Ossie Davis (Chuck) had a very long career too. And you may have seen him in the Spike Lee breakout movie DO THE RIGHT THING. My favorite was THE SCALPHUNTERS from back in the '60s. Walther Matthau (Max) was as you recognized, in DENNIS THE MENACE. But he had a much longer career than that, one that started in the '50s where he generally played dramatic roles. And then in the mid '60s casting directors started to realize he was much better suited for light comedies. And that constitutes the bulk of his work since then. with a few dramas sprinkled in here and there. And Jack Lemmon (Gustafson) had an almost identical career to Matthau's that is maybe most memorable for the many movies he and Matthau were paired in. This is why they got the leads in this movie. It was kind of their swan song for their fans. They did a lot of Neil Simon comedies together but my favorite is JFK which you absolutely have to put on your must see list. One of my top ten favorite movies of all time.
AND you forgot to mention the incredible Ann-Margaret - every boy's wet dream in the 60s and 70s! BYE BYE BIRDIE, TOMMY, CARNAL KNOWLWDGE, to name a few! AND she was a badass on a motorcycle!
@@GirlWithAnOpinion Absolutely did forget Ann-Margret. Thanks for pointing that out. My favorite from her, by the way, is a movie the critics unfairly panned, the remake of STAGECOACH. I saw it long before I got around to seeing the John Wayne original and given its superior production values it has always been my preference. The critics however often being so controlled by politics never gave it a chance.
@@GirlWithAnOpinion Yeah I was light in movie suggestions for both Lemmon and Matthau. And I agree with you on THE APARTMENT and DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. MR. ROBERTS is however rapey and therefore cringy for modern audiences and I'e never been that big a fan of SOME LIKE IT HOT and I can think of better movies to represent all three main actors. As to MY FELLOW AMERICANS I don't recall seeing it so I have no comment. As to Matthau, my favorites of his serious movies where he had a starring role are LONELY ARE THE BRAVE, and A FACE IN THE CROWD. Of his lighter stuff he was perfectly cast as the reluctant little league coach in THE BAD NEWS BEARS.
Kids, you have seen most of these actors before. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are 2 great comedy combinations who had hugely long careers. THEY were the original ODD COUPLE! Jack Lemmon as John Gustafson Jr.(In “Some Like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe”) Walter Matthau as Max Goldman Ann-Margret as Ariel Truax Gustafson, John's 2nd wife (Bye Bye Birdie) Burgess Meredith as John Gustafson Sr., John's father (MICKEY in the Rocky movies) Daryl Hannah as Melanie Gustafson, John's daughter (the one-eyed California Mountain Snake in Kill Bill!) Kevin Pollak as Jacob Goldman, Max's son (One of the lawyers in “A Few Good Men” Ossie Davis as Chuck (Bait Shop Owner) (The “Mayor” in “Do the Right Thing”) Buck Henry as Elliott Snyder (IRS Agent)Character actor for years Christopher McDonald as Mike, Melanie's former. (you have seen him in many shows and movies)
I’m from Minnesota and I remember when they shot certain scenes down the street from my house in St. Paul. This movie is so endearing to me although I’m African-American I definitely can relate.
I remember when they filmed this movie! The grocery store was right across from where I did gymnastics. Always loved them and these movies are very special to my heart ❤️
You guys have to watch one of their best movies together ever called " The Front page " amazing movie , these guys were bestfriends and are legends and they did eight movies together
Walter Matthau & Jack Lemmon made many movies together. The fortune cookie in 1966 I believe was the first. Then after that one that really put them on the map was the Odd Couple in 1968. Then they did a couple of Grumpy old men movies in 1993 & Grumpier old men in 1995 & I believe their final movie together was Out to Sea which was fantastic. Great comedy team together. Walter Matthau died 3 years later after the Out To Sea movie. Jack Lemmon died a year later.
You've gotta check out the sequel, Grumpier Old Men. It's even funnier than the original! P.S. Spam is actually good if you fry it. Eggs, Spam and toast is one of my fave breakfasts.
Ann Margaret had a party to celebrate Elvis' birthday as she usually did and after getting close to many making this film she invited them to the party. In Hollywood Reporter it was reported Matthau along with Lemmon reminisced about there Odd Couple experience that had everyone laughing.
I just love the Grumpy Old Men movies. The 2 Grumpy Old Men movies have a certain, lovely, warm charm to them. For example, I love how the scenery of the state of Minnesota is practically a co-star. In Grumpy Old Men we get to see how nice it looks with all that snow and ice. And in Grumpier Old Men we get to see what it looks like underneath all that snow and ice. Just beautiful. The small hometown feel also really adds to the charm. Makes one want to move there to live and hopefully have Max, John, Pop, Ariel, Maria (and all the others) as neighbors.
Ok guys. If you think that was good. Now you have to watch Walter and Jack in their original duo, The Odd Couple (1968). A 5 season tv series was made with different actors after the movie.
Grumpy Old Men is one of my favorite movies but in all honesty I think the second one "Grumpier Old Men" is better than the first one. The acting chemistry between Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau is legendary. Both are class acts. Then you cast a woman with the class and sex appeal of Ann-Margret making it even better. That woman is like a fine wine. But of course who cannot talk about the comedy of Burgess Meredith in this film? He played the father perfectly. Honestly, the entire cast is a roll call of shining stars.
I grew up where the movie was filmed. I remember there was a lot of talk about famous actors being around but I was too young to know who they were. I loved this movie growing up.
I have seen this movie a couple of times, and I have watched a couple of reaction videos to this movie. But there is nothing better than watching a movie with BJ and you too Asia, but BJ is my movie man. Lol God bless the both of you.
Asia, The saddest part is when the 3rd person is not trying to ruin a friendship. Then they have to worry about being blamed or feeling guilty for something that isn't their fault.
How you guys not recognize Micky from Rocky? That's Burgess Meredith. He was also the Penguin on the Adam West Batman show. Jack Lemmon and Walter Mattheiu have been doing movies together since the 1968 movie The Odd Couple. Which is pretty damn hilarious. Its about two polarizing roommates, one is a neat freak, and the other is a slob.
This is the 3rd channel I’ve seen react to this movie in the last few days lol. It’s one of my favorite movies so I will watch every reaction to this classic.
Same! And I’m not mad at it. It’s funny to note how each channel’s reactors reacted to the “blue” material. Of all three, Asia & DJ have my fave reactions (most in line with my own, natch).
The sequel is funnier. Glad you enjoyed this movie. It's a classic! The old man, John's pop is Burgess Meridith. If you've seen the Rocky movies, he's Rocky's manager Mickey. Ariel is the famous actress/singer Ann-Margret. She was in the movies Bye-Bye Birdie and Viva Las Vegas with Elvis and had a relationship with Elvis for awhile.. Check out the video from the movie where Elvis and Ann sinjg the song, " The Lady Loves Me" Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon did 3 or 4 movies together; they made a great team. John's daughter is the actress Daryl Hannah. She was in "Splash" with Tom Hanks and "Steel Magnolias" with Dolly Parton and Sally Fields. I think you are right that Walter was in Dennis the Menace. If you haven't watched "Steel Magnolias" yet it's a must.
Watch the sequel too, Matthau and Lemmon are brilliant together
It's on Patreon. There's always a delay since they have to edit the reactions for RUclips.
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon were legends !! They did a few more movies together and a lot on their own!! Both Oscar winners !!
yeah they worked together for 30-40 years, something like that, several great films. one of the best comedy duos ever

Burgess Meredith (Gustafson's father) Was Rocky's trainer in ROCKY 1 and 2.
With regard to Jack Lemon, how about THE APARTMENT, MR. ROBERTS, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES, MY FELLOW AMERICANS, and SOME LIKE IT HOT????
I'm so glad this film is seeing a resurgence. It's been a favorite of mine since it was released and can't receive enough love.
Yep! Grumpier Old Men is a must see follow up.
Grumpier Old Men is even better.
Kids, you have seen most of these actors before. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are 2 great comedy combinations who had hugely long careers. THEY were the original ODD COUPLE!
Jack Lemmon as John Gustafson Jr.(In “Some Like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe”)
Walter Matthau as Max Goldman
Ann-Margret as Ariel Truax Gustafson, John's 2nd wife (Bye Bye Birdie)
Burgess Meredith as John Gustafson Sr., John's father (MICKEY in the Rocky movies)
Daryl Hannah as Melanie Gustafson, John's daughter (the one-eyed California Mountain Snake in Kill Bill!)
Kevin Pollak as Jacob Goldman, Max's son (One of the lawyers in “A Few Good Men”
Ossie Davis as Chuck (Bait Shop Owner) (The “Mayor” in “Do the Right Thing”)
Buck Henry as Elliott Snyder (IRS Agent)Character actor for years
Christopher McDonald as Mike, Melanie's former. (you have seen him in many shows and movies)
Just got home from doctor and Seen this and I'm so freaking excited to see y'all doing one of my all time favorites
I am from Lino Lakes Minnesota, back then we literally used to leave the doors unlocked all day even if we were gone for "just a few hours".
You guys have to watch one of their best movies together ever called " The Front page " amazing movie , these guys were bestfriends and are legends and they did eight movies together
or The Odd Couple, or The Fortune Cookie...
The OLDEST man was on Rocky as his trainer. Love the channel!!!
Ann Margret and Burgess Meredith also worked together on 'Magic' (1978) starring Anthony Hopkins. It's a hugely under-appreciated horror film.
That movie was creepy.
Ann Margret was a teen star opposite ELVIS PRESLEY.
Ok guys. If you think that was good. Now you have to watch Walter and Jack in their original duo, The Odd Couple (1968). A 5 season tv series was made with different actors after the movie.
You have to watch Grumpier Old Men now. On a Side note Burgess Meredith, Gustavsson's Dad, also played Mickey in the Rocky movies
This is me and my best friend from the military. Yes im older than him but this is how we will retire and remember each other. ❤
The father was Mickey, Rockys trainer in all the rocky films
Kevin Pollack was in Casino, Usual Suspects, A Few Good Men and lots of other movies. Also a stand up comedian for decades.
Yes Walter Matthau was in Dennis The Menace
I have seen this movie a couple of times, and I have watched a couple of reaction videos to this movie. But there is nothing better than watching a movie with BJ and you too Asia, but BJ is my movie man. Lol God bless the both of you.
From a grumpy old man, in case no one told you, I luv y’all!
👨🏻🦳👉💕
Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men.. classics
You will love the sequel GRUMPIER OLD MEN.
Asia, The saddest part is when the 3rd person is not trying to ruin a friendship. Then they have to worry about being blamed or feeling guilty for something that isn't their fault.
Burgess Meredith played Micky in the Rocky movies
Filmed in Minnesota and the redhead is Raquel Welch
It's Ann Margret
You have to watch the rest of the story!!! In "GRUMPIER OLD MEN"
How you guys not recognize Micky from Rocky?
The dad is Burgess Meredith and he was in rocky as well as the famous twilight zone episode called Time Enough at Last.
It's not something I'd want to eat all the time, but if you slice and fry Spam then add mustard it's pretty good.
I live in MN and these guys remind me so much of old guys around me.
The "weather man" was actually talk radio host Steve Cochran from WGN Radio Chicago.
I watched this movie 🎥 when I was a kid with my grandma this movie makes me cry 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
John's dad is Burgess Meredith.
Who is better known as Mick in the Rocky movies. Y'all need to watch those next! 😎
Check out the video from the movie where Elvis and Ann sinjg the song, " The Lady Loves Me"
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon did 3 or 4 movies together; they made a great team.
I never saw them as anything but brothers who had a love hate relationship. Constantly prankng and name calling
Burgess Meredith who played the old dad was also Mick in the Rocky movies
Thank you for doing this one!! Now do part two!!!❤
