The sequel is a must for anyone who enjoyed the first. Great actors in these two films; Burgess Meredith just stole every scene he was in. So funny.
Burgess is a legend in the sequel. :D
Speaking of Burgess Meredith, did Ashleigh already see the Rocky series?
(I can't remember.)
@@nealsterling8151 - She's done a reaction to the first movie.
@@kendric2000-q3d, no shit.
Especially since the sequel has Sophia Loren!
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau made a shitload of great movies together and separately. The sequel Grumpier Old Men is just as funny and touching in my opinion...
Yes the sequel Grumpier Old Men amps up the zaniness and slapstick and is even more endearing ....definitely must watch, Ashleigh!
@@bigtip8371 Add the legendary Sophia Loren to the cast and you have a movie sequel even better than the original
They were simply legendary together which makes it all the more amazing that every second Burgess Meredith was on screen with them he managed to steal the show. This and the sequel were brilliant.
Pop Gustavson’s telling of the of The Three Bears remains, to this day, my personal favorite rendition of that story.
Out To Sea is also very funny. It's basically Grumpy Old Men on a boat, even though they technically play different characters.

My sister’s ex boyfriend used the spray on hair. It stained the back of their couch. 😂

Weird Al wrote a song about the guy that invented spray on hair and the pocket fisherman “Mr Popiel”
@@yendub No, you're not allowed to be sad because that means I'm sad too. :-/
Ann Margeret was drop dead gorgeous when she was young and lost none of her beauty with age.
Fun fact: the old man with the glasses who played Jack Lemmon's dad was played by Burgess Meredith, who was also Mick in Rocky. Also, he was the Penguin on the old Batman show and was in a lot of episodes of The Twilight Zone. Needless to say, this silly little movie has a really good cast.
He w also played George in the movie Of Mice and Men in 1939. Lon Chaney Jr. played his buddy Lenny. Truly a sad movie, really great though
@@revjim123 If we were to list all of the great performances from Burgess Meredith, it'd completely take over the comments section.
Burgess Meredith was also great in 'Foul Play' (1978) with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. Definitely one to put on the list.
Also in Clash of the Titans, one of my favorite movies.
The main cast had 3 Oscar wins & 15 nominations.
Lol!! Beans’ reaction to the footsteps made me think of “A Christmas Story”.
“Randy laid there like a slug. It was his only defense.”
Years ago, I edited an interview my boss did with Jack Lennon and he referred to Matthau as "my Walter" throughout. They were a special, unique double-act. Hats Off Entertainment made a really good documentary about them.
Now you must watch "Grumpier Old men", the sequel. Which is every bit as good as the original and also has bloopers at the end.
This movie was a massive hit when it came out. That's one reason why it spawned a successful sequel. And since Hollywood loves to jump on a successful formula, the year after this came out was littered with movies starring lots of older, veteran actors. They weren't as brilliant as Grumpy Old Men, and the fad waned quickly.
This was one of the last hurrahs for the leads; Lemmon, Mathau, and Ann-Margaret had been household names for decades. Even the supporting characters were well-known: Ozzie Davis, Burgess Meredith, Kevin Pollack, and even Buck Henry. Daryl Hannah was one of the biggest draws in Hollywood at the time, and she signed on to play a small, supporting role.
For anyone watching movies when this came out, it was a huge movie; it's one of those rare movies that almost everyone loves. But younger generations are not going to be so quick to try a film about old men, especially when they no longer recognize the actors. And unlike a lot of other big movies of the time, this is probably not the kind of movie parents would share with their kids-- so the love doesn't get passed on.
I'm glad you liked it. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I knew you were going to love this one.
(As for the sequel, it is a solid movie and worth watching, especially if you are invested in the characters. It is not as good as the original, in my opinion, but that's measuring it against a pretty high standard.)
Don't forget we also got these two in The Odd Couple II (talk about the longest time between original and sequel, wow), and Out to Sea. Not to mention Jack Lemmon with James Garner in My Fellow Americans. And they were all hilarious
I agree, I loved, "Grumpier Old Men". Also, Sofia Loren is titanium. I have a picture of the house she used to live in in Rome somewhere around here.
@@k1productions87 My wife and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE "Out to Sea"! I hope Ashley gets around to it, sooner rather than later... it also has a fantastic Blooper Reel.
This cast is phenomenal. It’s so weird for me to see a younger person not knowing who every single person is in this movie.
You also need to see "The Odd Couple" it stars Walter Matthau, and Jack Lemmon. Also, there is a sequel to this film that is also worth watching called "Grumpier Old Men"
But be warned - a major part of the plot in the beginning involves an attempted suicide. It's a fantastic film, though - AND it has Stanley Zbornak from The Golden Girls!

This is definitely one of those movies that just gets better with age, and by age I mean both the movie's age as well as the viewers'. The Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau combination was just such an incredible pairing, going back to the sixties. Check out their first movie together, The Fortune Cookie, or their most successful movie, The Odd Couple.
"HER DRESS IS SO UGLYYYY." Taking time out of your cry, because of how emotional you were, to say how ugly the dress is was SO HYSTERICAL, and adorable.
@gilkesisking, that is the story of this whole movie.

Not in the top 100, but in the top 200 favorite movies for me.
And uncalled for
@gilkesisking - Yes, I actually laughed out loud too! I imagine her thoughts were "Thank god he's still alive! He survived! He's ok.......oh my god....her dress is so ugly though!!!" LOL!
In Ariel's defence she bought a wedding dress in the middle of Winter. Most weddings happen in the Spring and Summer, chances are all the good dresses are sold out until the Wedding season starts again.
Oh, Ashleigh....That shit cracked me up!!! 😂😂😂😂
The sequel is even better. "Grumpier Old Men" is a MUST WATCH.
I like the sequel better too. This one is great but the sequel I thought was even funnier
If they ever make a sequel to Grumpier Old Men (have they yet?), I just hope they don't call it Grumpierer Old Men, like how the sequel to Dumb and Dumber is called Dumb and Dumberer. And why did I actally just spend the time to type all that out? And why am I STILL going? Your guess is as good as mine, mi amigo.
Adding Sophia Loren was a brilliant move.
Jack and Walter were one of Hollywood's BEST comedic dues of ALL time!
Between this and the sequel Grumpier Old Men Grandpa Gustafson is EVERYTHING I want to be when I'm in my 90s.

If you liked this, you HAVE to see more movies starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau together--starting with the original Odd Couple (1968). They were one of the greatest on-screen duos.
Their first pairing was The Fortune Cookie (1966) which is also great! And the sequel - Grumpier Old Men - is good, too.
Out to Sea!!!
"Why is this not more talked about?!" We who grew up on it did talk about it. And we happily recommend it as one of the greats. I think it has something to do w/ the "common knowledge" problem where many of us who are a bit older already know and don't think to tell other people b/c we assume they already know lol. It's one of the few movies where the sequel is just as good too. Lemmon and Matthau were stars from an earlier generation, but they had no problem crossing the divide with Grumpy and Grumpier (their other team-ups were good but these two were the best imho). And Burgess Meredith is always worth watching. Love the channel!
One of the characters was in Days of wine and Roses, 30 years earlier
Grumpy Old Men 2!!! It’s totally worth it with the cast all returning and it is a totally good sequel!
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were the leads, but Burgess Meredith stole the movie in every scene that he was in. The absolute legend!

Oh, and there is a sequel to Grumpy Old Men called Grumpier Old Men that is really funny too!
The 3 main actors here were already famous when this movie came out for they had been in the business for years. Anne Margaret has been in a few musicals including Viva Las Vegas (an Elvis movie) and Bye, Bye Birdie (it has Dick Van Dyke in it).
So glad you included a few bloopers here for they were funny. It's interesting with this movie had so much adult humor and a good chunk of it went over my head when I first saw this lol.
The sequel is amazing too! The two lead actors had a long and fruitful history of working together. They were the original The Odd Couple.

Yeah well, Michael Jordan's house is worth well over 20 million dollars.
John's dad was Burgess Meredith, "Mickey" from Rocky.
The sequel is definitely worth watching.
Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau are a great team. You have to see them in "The Odd Couple".
This movie was a big hit when it came out.
He was also the Penguin on Adam West's Batman.
It wasn't known at the time, but Burgess Meredith's "bloopers" were because he was having trouble with his lines due to having Alzheimer's.
Burgess Meredith...old school character, for sure.. one of the greats.
for sure The Odd Couple!
Can probably skip Out to Sea, but you do you, haha.
Me waiting to see if Ashleigh recognizes Darryl Hannah from Steel Magnolias. .. and Ashleigh you definitely need to see the sequel. It's better than the first
The reason this is so under rated is because it came out the same year as some BIG MOVIES! Scent of a Woman, A Few Good Men, Unforgiven, Malcom X, The Crying Game and a little known movie Disney did called Aladdin. Tough competition!!!
Since you liked this movie so much I’d like to recommend “ Some Like It Hot “ . Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, & Marylyn Monroe. Jack Lemmon was one of America’s great comedic actors. I think his movies are worth watching.
Understatement. Jack Lemmon was a great actor who could make you feel anything, you could relate to his highs and lows, his authenticity and skill earned him eight nominations and two Academy Awards.
I feel like Ashleigh should watch a Cary Grant movie before she watches 'Some Like It Hot', so she will understand why Tony Curtis starts talking in an odd British accent.
I agree with Thread Bomb that having knowledge of who Cary Grant is, is helpful in understanding the character that Tony Curtis' character is putting on. (Besides the fact that Cary Grant is amazing, and Ashleigh should definitely watch his stuff!) "Operation Petticoat" would be a good chance to see an older Grant and a young Curtis playing opposite each other; it gave Curtis a chance to practice his Grant impression.
I also would be interested in seeing a millennial's opinion of "Some Like It Hot" I'm curious to see how the premise plays in 2021.
@@ThreadBomb "No-body talks like that!"
Although I heard the last man who said that about Cary Grant was Archie Leach - a week before he cut his throat!
My favorite Jack Lemmon movie has become The Apartment - not to mention Shirley MacLaine's appearance! And it's a Christmas movie, just sayin...
I was in this movie. Real talk! They filmed a couple scenes for this movie in my hometown of Faribault, MN. During the drug store scene they needed people to keep walking down the street outside to make the scene look natural, so my 2.5 year old nephew and I can be seen walking by in the background!
So cool! My best friend lives in Faribault. I'm from LeCenter.
That's awesome!
Man that is cool you earned those bragging rights ❤️
I remember hearing about them filming a little bit of the movie on Fairbault and was bummed we missed the chance. Grew up in Mankato.
My nephew ran out into the filming area at one point and Anne Margaret picked him up and brought him over to me. She said "Cute kid!" and walked back to her chair.
The late great Jack Lemmon is one of my favourite actors of all time. Very much missed. I recommend *_"The Apartment"_* around Christmas/New Year's Day.

Jack Lemon & Walter Matthau have appeared together in 10 movies. They were in the original 1968 film The Odd Couple which was spun off into an iconic TV series that was more recently revived. Their last film together was a sequel to The Odd Couple, 30 years later.
Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Ann-Margret were all seasoned actors from classic movies. Seeing them in this comedy was such a treat. This is one of the funniest movies I've seen. I love your reaction to this.
This was probably my dad's favorite movie of all time. When he was dying of cancer, he would watch almost everyday and laugh like he was watching it for the first time! Glad you liked it.
You owe it to yourself to check out the 1968 movie The Odd Couple, the very first comedy pairing of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau. Comedy gold was created in that movie, and this here a chance to get back that old cantankerous chemistry but in a new way. It's very nostalgic, because Ann-Margaret was one of THE great sex symbols of the 1960s and it's so good to see her still smoldering. Extra thanks for this one!
Lemmon and Matthau actually started out in "The Fortune Cookie".
Grew up watching this with my grandpa. He’s been gone for many years but this movie always brings lots of smiles and laughs. Miss you grandpa and merry Christmas to everyone reading 🎄🎅
Those two actors are classic, just fantastic fellows.
You might like the original odd couple movie, starring both of the male leads from this movie. It was made in the 60's

@@Michelle-DiPalo yeah, but it wasn't very good

Second this, Odd Couple is a GREAT shout
Fun facts: Ariel was based off of my theater professor Vivian Fusillo at Winona State (30 miles south of Wabasha). The writer of this movie was an old student of hers and I can confidently say that she is represented perfectly in this movie. I was honored to be in the last class she taught before she retired. Also, Spam was invented in Austin, Minnesota
And if you drive through Austin on 90 at certain times of the day you can smell the Spam factory.
Hey fellow WSU-er! I knew Vivian - actually, I worked for her long-time S.O. George who ran the aviation program, who (I'm also told) was the inspiration for Matthau and Lemmon's characters.
That's an awesome story. I'm also a WSU alum, and Vivian's son-in-law is my best friend. 😀
That's actually pretty cool to know.
If you set your wayback machine to the 50s, I recommend an earlier Jack Lemmon role with Henry Fonda and James Cagney in "Mr. Roberts", one of my family's favorites, a comedy/drama where Jack Lemmon delivers a lot of the comedy, a great choice for your older film knowledge. As for Mathau, "A New Leaf" with Elaine May is such an adorably cute and funny cult classic of a movie, I think you'd love it.
"I'm looking for marbles All. Day. Long!"
Oh hell yeah, Mister Roberts for the win.
Oh boy can't wait for Ashleigh seeing the bloopers on the second movie!
When Ashleigh says “why is this movie not talked about?” am I thee only one who yells “It was…back then!” 🤣
I remember when the 90s animated movie, Cats Don't Dance! came out, in the credits they showed animal versions of 'famous movies' and Grumpy Old Men was one of them lol. So yeah definite 90s classic and it's a shame it's not really talked about now.
I say “Cuz most people would watch The Odd Couple or maybe The Fortune Cookie instead”
That's not a good response. We can say the same thing for Lawrence of Arabia. This film is a classic comedy. I saw this movie as a kid in the theater, and I loved it. I'm not even 40 years old. These young people are too infatuation with the MCU. Oh well.
"Why is this movie not talked about more?"
It was talked about a great _deal,_ back in '93. But time has passed and that's how things go. 🤷
Yep the movie was huge back then, and it was on TV all the time.
Yeah, we all saw it when it came out
Yup, it was a huge hit.

As a native of Minnesota, where this was filmed and set in, this movie was a big deal when it came out. My grandparents actually lived in Wabasha.
You need to go back through the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau pairings, they were (still are!) one of the best comedic duos in screen history. The Odd Couple, The Fortune Cookie (my personal fav), The Front Page, Out to Sea...all classics!
Speaking of The Fortune Cookie Lemon's collaborations with Billy Wilder are similarly an absolute must.
The sequel is good also! Glad you liked this one.
You must be THEE best reactor on YT IMO. I have seen A LOT of movie reactions and your reactions are by far the most entertaining.
I love you so much! LOL! When you were freaking out, asking about the ice fishing cabins, then made the comment, “I learn so much watching these movies. Old houses creek. I lived in a wood sided house as a kid and it made a lot of noise that sounded like footsteps upstairs. The mention of “70 degrees” makes it likely that the noise is from the wood expanding and contracting from large temperature changes, or changes in humidity. Could be a spirit, but probably weather + old house.
i agree with you that old houses make expanding and contracting noises. my house was built in 1954 and it's not as old as ashleigh's house, but the "settling" noises my house makes are really loud. but, i still think ashleigh can tell the difference between house settling noises and footsteps on the stairs. no offense, btw.

I didn't see this movie in the theatre, unfortunately, but so many of my coworkers were talking about it I rented it as soon as it was released on home video. I definitely went to see the sequel, Grumpier Old Men, in the theatre. Local theatre was packed to the brim and it was filled with laughter. Definitely a good film to watch multiple times.
I knew that you would love this movie, it has so much heart. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are comedy legends, and Ann Margaret was a sex symbol from the 60s that was still stunning when the movie came out. Totally unexpected hit Xmas movie in that era, but it totally worked.

I knew before even clicking that Ashleigh is gonna really like this, and when you said you knew nothing about it, especially since you know at least an actor or or something, I knew you would absolutely love it. Please, if you do another after Grumpier Old Men, please, please watch "The Odd Couple", it's one of the first of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau's dynamic comedic duo-ness, and is all around a very good movie I think you would enjoy:)
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau have co-starred in many films together going back to "The Fortune Cookie" (1966, for which Matthau won the Oscar for best supporting actor) and the original "The Odd Couple" (1968). They were best friends off screen, as well. Ann-Margeret, among other films, co-starred with Elvis Presley in "Viva Las Vegas" (1964).
Tangential information: keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman (Bowie, Strawbs, Yes, etc.) now refers to himself as 'The Grumpy Old Rock Star'.
This film is probably not talked about because when it came out, most of us who saw it were about 30 years old. That means most of us are over 55 now and so many of your viewers are a little below that demographic. The good part is there are so many other good movies out there like this you also haven't heard of as of yet. But you will. Fried Green Tomatoes was one such film. Now you need to see The Big Chill and The Crying Game.

Regarding hearing footsteps in older houses with wood floors. Sometimes, when you step on wooden steps, it presses the wood down, and then later, the wood pops up, sounding like someone is walking on wood floors or steps. At least that is what my dad told me. Wooden floors in old homes are pretty creaky, expanding and contracting and you did say it was hot up there...but yes, I still believe in ghosts as well. So....
haha yes, we bought an old house and fixed it up. Before we put the new floors down, I was constantly hearing "footsteps" in another room when I was the only one there. It really creeped me out, but then I would notice it happening like when I was in the front room and my husband was walking around at the back of the house and we figured that's what was going on. It stopped once we fixed the floors.
Yep.
If you want to exorcise your staircase ghost, use screws to hold the stair treads down.
Yep, not a ghost. Houses with temperature changes make all kinds of noises.
Lemmon and Mathaws (the two leads) earlier movies they did together in the 60's were very good, especially "The Odd Couple" (68 version) and "The Fortune Cookie" (their first team-up)

I couldn't believe someone was reacting to this movie (because it's never talked about) and I'm so glad you did. I love this movie. I actually love the sequel more but that doesn't cancel out how much I love this movie.
If you don't notice all reaction channel react to the same movies as everyone else at the same time, Ashley did this after at least 5 popular reaction channels did this movie in the past week. I don't know why? It's like they get a list of movies to react to each week
"That plow sure ain't doing much to that road." Welcome to Minnesota. The town in Minnesota where I lived for 2 years, using a snow plow was pretty much pointless.
John's dad is Burgess Meredith who also played Mickey in Rocky. He's one of my favorite actors just for those 2 roles.
Ann Margret. That’s all I need to hear. I first fell for her when she was a leading lady opposite Elvis Presley. What an eternal beauty. Of course adding Burgess Meredith, and the original Odd Couple didn’t hurt.
❤️😂✌🏼😎
Who just got better and better as she matured.
I watch this every Christmas. This was me and my dad’s favorite movie. He’s not here anymore, but I know he’s sitting next to me every time I watch it. I’m so happy you’ve gotten to see this. Now you need to watch Grumpier Old Men too!
“How do you like your eggs? Fertilized.“
Ohmygod 😂
Lol, I was like 'UN-Fertilized' before she could say it. Luckily I think at that age Ariel didn't have to worry about that anymore!
Did you catch that Burgess Meredith (the older man) was Rocky's trainer ("Cut me, Mick.")? He also played The Penguin in the original Batman series. And speaking of Dynamic Duos 😁 ...Walter Mathau and Jack Lemmon surely fit the bill.
There is a part 2… Grumpier Old Men. And personally I love it just as much as the first.
I go the other way, I remember I saw it but I remember nothing about it which means I found it completely unmemorable.
I'm so glad you watched this one! It's a very underrated classic, and I knew you were gonna love it before I even saw the review (I was right) :)
These guys are my heroes. I really identify with Burgess Meredith, the old man. This is a classic for sure and I loved your reaction to it all.
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are one of the greatest comic duos of all time!
Oh, the "Hair in a Can" was a very real product. Still no idea who was desperate or gullible enough to ever actually buy it, but there were enough.
When the product first appeared, I didn't quite need it... Now IT'S TOO LATE!!!
I have a feeling that the people that bought AND used it would still say "Yeah. Who would buy such a silly thing? It obviously doesn't work. I mean look at it." lol
If you like this you should check out their original screen collaboration the 1968 movie The Odd Couple basically these characters but younger. The movie spawned a successful TV series starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman.
Since you loved Grumpy Old Men, I highly recommend the sequel, Grumpier Old Men. It's just as good as the first one.
As a lifelong resident of Minnesota, both of these movies have a special place in my heart. I think you pretty much got the gist of everything uniquely Minnesota about the movie. They really do have the ice houses out on the lakes like you see in the movie, or at least did. I don't see them as much anymore.
And yes, the building Ariel had outside her house was a sauna. That is something we crazy Minnesotans are known to do. Sit in the sauna (or hot tub) for a long while and then go roll around in the snow.
Really loved that you watched this. I grew up watching this at my grandparents house all the time and I grew to love it. Definitely watch the sequel!
Burgess Meredith kills me. I always watch the bloopers :) There is "Grumpier" Old Men as well if you are interested.
Ann Margaret is, was and remains one of the very best looking women ever...
Three way talent, looks, acting, dancing, singing, you name it she could do it. And look great doing it.
(Watch THE VILLAIN (aka Cactus Jack) if you wanna see her doing a great send up of herself in a comedy that sends up EVERY star that is in it.
Thanks for giving a shout out for Ann-Margret. If someone else hadn't, I was going to. Bye, Bye, Birdie. Carnal Knowledge.
she was in her 50s when this movie was made, so 20 years younger than Lemon and Matthau. *gg
@@stefankrautz9048 52 to be exact. Sophia Loren was in her early 60s when she appeared in the sequel.
Jack Lemmon & Walter Matthau were in several movies together. Two of my favorites are the 1966 film "The Fortune Cookie", directed by Billy Wilder (I love Billy Wilder's films), and the 1968 film adaptation of "The Odd Couple". Both are funny in their own way.
The red head is Ann-Margret. Ann-Margret was in the film adaptation of the musical "Bye Bye Birdie", and the Elvis movie "Viva Las Vegas". She had a relationship with Elivis during the production.
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau always had incredible chemistry together, which brings such life to any project they did together.
Now Ashleigh just has to watch Grumpier Old Men. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were comedic geniuses and just work so well off of each other!
Ashleigh after this I'd suggest The Odd Couple. This was a continuation of this very senario started by The Odd Couple. Same two actors and a very witty like this. Glad you loved it as one of my dad's favorites as well as mine
Jack Lemmon who played John is also in the DVD you received ... "SOME LIKE IT HOT". A MUST watch.
My mom owned this movie on VHS, and at first glance, my first thought was that it must be a catalogue for flannel shirts or denim pants or something. But then I read the title...and I was even more convinced!😝🤐
