Ashleigh, save Little Shop of Horrors for Friday, September 23. That’s the day the movie / play takes place so it would be perfect before the start of Hallobeans!! And John Candy is in that movie too and he has a job on the radio!
Old dynamite is even more dangerous than good condition dynamite. As the nitroglycerine ages and sits neglected, it leaches into the paper and can form crystals on the surface of the sticks. These crystals are extremely shock sensitive and even bumping them can cause a detonation.
Came her to say this. The nitroglycerin can also leak out, build up, and explode without warning if it's kept in damp conditions so if that mine section is normally filled with water like that they might be in even more danger there.
"Did you know raccoons purr?" Yes. "Did you know they don't produce their own spit?" Yes. That's why they "wash" their food. It's not a hygienic thing, it's to make up for a lack of salivary glands.
You might like Summer Rental, a very underated Candy film which is him on vacation with his family but it's Rather subdued compared to the great outdoors but it's still very funny
Summer Rental was filmed here locally, one of the guys from our drama class got a bit part in the movie, he's on screen for like a minute and has a few lines. We were so jealous. LOL.
The bald bear was played by Bart, who was probably the most famous bear in Hollywood. He was in movies, TV, and advertising in the '70s, '80s and '90s, before succumbing to cancer in 2000. Every human actor who played alongside him was impressed by how well he was trained. Can't wait for Thor Ragnarok!
To add to fun facts about Bart the Bear, he was truly massive! Stood at a height of 9 ft 7.5 in (293 cm) and weighed 1,500 lb (680 kg)! And crazy enough, he appeared in the 70th Academy Awards on stage as part of a salute to animal actors and "handing" Mike Myers the envelope. You can can find the clip of it here on RUclips.

This movie touches on so many things about going on vacation in the northwoods. Every summer our family went to northern Wisconsin in the 60's through the 80's. We did the bears at the dump, the restaurant which in real life was called Paul Bunyans, as a teenager there always seemed to be someone you might call a summer love whether it was a local or someone else at the resort and going fishing early in the morning. The trash cans all had the latching lids to keep the racoons out.

Oh good lord! I was a kid at Bass Lake watching this being filmed. The scene where his son goes to the A&W, watched all the takes. It's an ice cream shop, or was, but never was an A&W. I need to drive back up to see what all is there today. I remember Hollywood took over the entire beach area we hung out at. Bass Lake was never the same after unfortunately. You got my respect for liking John Candy and Dan Akroyd and John Hughes! Also, you have beautiful hair and a Golden Girls cup, I'm subscribed after this viewing!
I was a young teen when my Mom took my sister and I to this movie. We had such a great time! The bear scene in the end had the whole theater just rolling and we were to. Just a happy childhood moment I wanted to share. Love it, and nostalgic for me.
Ashleigh wants candy. John Candy that is. 😁 Funnily enough, my aunt, uncle and cousin had a similar experience to the bat thing. But it wasn’t on vacation, it was at their house! Thankfully, it was a just a bird not a bat.
If you want to hear John Candy in a more surreal role, try watching "Heavy Metal." It's one of those weirdly addictive cult animated films, but he fits in so well with his part.
I may have told the story before, but I'll tell it again. Some years ago, I was an extra on an episode of ENG, and John Candy turned up on the set. He wasn't in the episode or anything, he was probably there just to see someone. Anyway, while he was there, he came down to the cafeteria and kind of held court, surrounded by all the extras and bit players. He was a funny, charming guy, and really the only celebrity I ever met who FELT like a celebrity. When I heard he had died, I was stunned. He was such a nice guy, such a character and so well loved by everyone. RIP John.
One of my fave movies growing up. When they’re chasing the bat, you can see Dan Akroyd hiding behind the staircase counting to 3 and then they all run back out. 😂
I just got back two days ago from a family vacation just like this, my dad is Chet and my uncle is Roman. This is hilarious, I can't believe I never noticed it before.
Funny little blooper in this movie: in one camera shot when the bear is standing on top of the door, the bottom left corner of the screen includes a person waving a stick. That's the bear's trainer signaling to the bear what to do. 🤣
Fun Fact: In the scene where they come back to the cabin after Chet eats the steak, when he runs to vomit and his family follows, you can see Dan count 1, 2, 3 in the background and then everyone runs out of the cabin.
That’s still one of my favorite movies. I loved the story, both Lucy and Bonnie Bedelia were cute as heck, and Fred Gwynn & Louise Fletcher were unexpected treats.
Annette Benning who played Dan Aykroyd's wife (spin cycle) is a fantastic actress in so many films. Grifters is my favorite with John Cusack and Angelica Huston. ❤️❤️❤️
VOLUNTEERS…. It’s a all time FOREVER CLASSIC!!! Such a great movie! Love that Tom Hanks is also in cast. Which is an amazing bonus for me cause I loved them together in SPLASH! Yasss please add VOLUNTEERS to the reaction list! You won’t be disappointed! 🤗😎👍🏼☮️
Miss John Candy. RIP One of my brother in laws picked John up from the Vancouver airport back in the late 80's and he was a very nice guy. I haven't seen this movie in years. John Candy and Dan Aykroyd are both legendary funny men and great Canadians 🍁
I worked for 22 years as a pest control technician, and one of the weirdest calls I ever got was a bat that was roosting in a customer's recessed lighting. I had to use one of those claw things people use to pick stuff up when they're too infirm to bend down, and a drawstring bag to contain it while I took it outside. Very strange episode. Also, I hate to burst your Raccoon Love Bubble, but raccoons are the soccer hooligans of the animal kingdom. They break stuff and make messes just because they can and they don't care. Also, Raccoon Love Bubble is the name of my Pussy Riot cover band.
the majority of The Great Outdoors was filmed at Bass Lake. The Cabin was built for the movie and still stands to this day. One of my daughters works for the company that rents it out and I used to work for a lumber company that displays the blueprints signed by some of the cast and crew (including John Candy, Dan Aykroyd and John Hughes among them) hanging on the wall behind the counter.
I'm sorry, but to capture all of the Shakespeare-y goodness of that sentence, I simply must insist we refrain from modernizing the original Elizabethan English. *clears throat* Exeunt, pursued by a bear. Now, let the hysterics commence. 😁
I love this movie. I didn't get to see it until it came out on VHS, when I was 12. My little 12 year old self loved every minute of this movie, and I still do to this day.
This movie has a special place in my heart. I was 8 or 9 when I first saw it. We were at my mom's folks' house up in the backwoods of northern Minnesota and my uncles were watching it, but we weren't supposed to. My grandma and aunts found out we were and yelled at my uncles for letting "the kids" watch something so inappropriate and so my uncles made one of my boy cousins stand in front of the TV during the "racy" parts so we couldn't see them. It still makes me giggle now, some 30+ years later. Solid gold.
This movie proves that polls arent everything. If you love John Candy, you should watch more John Candy. (start with Only the Lonely, and then Cool Runnings)
There is a restaurant in Amarillo, Texas called The Big Texan and they have a "if you eat it its free" steak that is 72oz and you have to eat the whole steak with the fat as well as the baked potatoe, green beans, rolls, corn and apple pie. Then its free if you eat it all. My dad tried it once and it wasn't too cheap to have to pay for.
So glad you watched this! One of my childhood faves. Another film with A LOT of comedians is HARLEM NIGHTS starring Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Red Fox, Robin Harris, Charlie Murphy & Della Reese.
When I was 7 we were caretakers on a farm, there were bats in one of the barns and my older brother & I convinced our younger brother that vampires lived in the barn. He's been terrified of bats and barns ever since, even little sheds that look like barns.
I love this movie! One of the many vhs we loved to rent at the library. Golden stuff. Happy you enjoyed! Recommend: Innerspace The Sting The Darjeeling Limited
Wow, haven't seen this movie in YEARS. Such a treat to see the edited version. I ate three hot dogs today. Dan was busy with Ghostbusters II that year. This was Annette Bening's film debut. More John Candy--The Blues Brothers, Cool Runnings, Canadian Bacon, Wagons East, Boris And Natasha, Once Upon A Crime..., JFK, Delirious, Only The Lonely, Nothing But Trouble, The Rescuers Down Under as Wilbur, The Rocket Boy, Speed Zone, Who's Harry Crumb?, Little Shop Of Horrors, Armed And Dangerous, Dave Thomas: The Incredible Time Travels Of Henry Osgood, Volunteers, Summer Rental, Follow That Bird, Brewster's Millions, The Last Polka, Going Berserk, Stripes, Double Negative, 1941, Lost And Found, The Silent Partner, Tunnel Vision, It Seemed Like A Good Idea At The Time. RIP John. There you go Ashleigh; your patrons can vote on his next movie. Movie suggestion: The Boy Who Could Fly with Lucy Deakins (in this film), Fred Savage, Bonnie Bedelia, Colleen Dewhurst, Fred Gwynn, and Jay Underwood.
This was one of my dads favorite movies when I was a kid so we watched it a lot. So many jokes went over my head as a kid that finally clicked when I went back and watched it as an adult (the vodka joke lol). Apparently John Hughs always had to have a teen romance in his scripts which, looking back at it now, explains why that story felt a bit forced/weird.
you buy leeches at the bait store in Minnesota. They are used to fish for Walleye Pile, a very tasty fish. They attach if you let them. Usually, they attach to a finger or thumb while you put them on the hook.
Wagons East was another great John Candy movie and also his last. PS. Old dynamite sweats pure nitroglycerine and a good bump will cause it to explode.
@@markwilliams6394 I believe John Candy died on the set of Wagons East. And yes Canadian Bacon was funny but maybe I'm in the minority but I liked Wagons East more.
I said it was filmed before Wagon's East just came out after it. I think it went straight to VHS. They held up the release cuz he had died. I prefer Wagon's East more but both are funny.
Ashleigh's comment about "something you keep in a drawer" reminded me how young she is. At the time this movie was made, those kinds of things were illegal to sell in much of the country, and the kind of places that DID sell them were incredibly sketchy to say the least. There are still places where those things are illegal. Looking at you Alabama.
John Candy is my favorite actor. Cool Runnings is another great movie of his. And he also has a small cameo in Little Shop of Horrors (1986) (Theatrical cut). It stars Rick Moranis and has Steve Martin in his greatest-ever role. You'll seriously love his singing and dancing. HOWEVER, there is one thing about the movie I suspect you'll hate and be unable to ignore the whole time.

Great movie! My brother and I took our dad to see this in the theatre for Fathers Day when it came out, and since they’re both no longer with us, this movie has a lot of sentimental value to me. I definitely had a thing for Cammie, and I don’t know if she went on to be in anything else. I’ve tried the 96 oz steak challenge a couple times because of this movie, and it’s even harder than it looks. "Bart the bear" was in a lot of movies and TV shows and was indeed a big boy at 1,779lbs and 9 foot, 7 inches tall. In case anyone is wondering, they didn't shave him, he's wearing a prosthetic rubber butt.
We say "Processing nicely" from time to time, when we've gone too far. My wife also had a raccoon as a kid. They used to take it on road trips in the motor home.
This is definitely one of my favorite John Candy movies. It's so good. I love the stuff with the bear and the raccoons. This one is one of Joghn Hughes best movies. And I hear you about John Hughes being hit or miss. I love a good lot of them, but then there are others like Sixteen Candles and Ferris Bueller's Day Off that I can't stand. I'd also recommend Weird Science. That's one of my favorite John Hughes movies. Clerks is great. I think you might love that one, but I also recommend watching Mallrats and Dogma. Those are also great movies by Kevin Smith.
John Candy did a romcom film a couple years before he died with Ally Sheedy called "Only The Lonely". It's really good and shows more of what a good actor he was.
Is it a "good" movie? Nope Is it a standard 80s sit com movie? Yep Is John Candy ALWAYS worth watching? Yes! Is this movie one of my favorite movies? Also yes One of those movies that is much, much better than it should be and it's mostly because of one guy.

She won't like Heavy Metal.
@@blagoyavichrod why not?
I may have told the story before, but I'll tell it again.
Some years ago, I was an extra on an episode of ENG, and John Candy turned up on the set. He wasn't in the episode or anything, he was probably there just to see someone. Anyway, while he was there, he came down to the cafeteria and kind of held court, surrounded by all the extras and bit players. He was a funny, charming guy, and really the only celebrity I ever met who FELT like a celebrity.
When I heard he had died, I was stunned. He was such a nice guy, such a character and so well loved by everyone. RIP John.
Another great John Candy movie that you'll love is "Summer Rental". So funny!
I always have to laugh when Ashleigh is shocked by the films from the 80s! It was a different time. 😆
Summer Rental along with Armed and Dangerous are John Candy's most underrated movies IMO.
Lots of fun and Meg Ryan is sooooo young in that!
Summer rental soon funny
I agree with summer rental
Summer Rental is amazing
Funny little blooper in this movie: in one camera shot when the bear is standing on top of the door, the bottom left corner of the screen includes a person waving a stick. That's the bear's trainer signaling to the bear what to do. 🤣
Fun Fact: In the scene where they come back to the cabin after Chet eats the steak, when he runs to vomit and his family follows, you can see Dan count 1, 2, 3 in the background and then everyone runs out of the cabin.
Ashleigh, your timing is perfect. "I wonder if we're gonna see the bald bear again."
But my favorite scene is the water skiing.
Lucy Deakins who played Buck's love interest was also in "The Boy Who Could Fly". Great movie and awesome story.
Oh man, I forgot all about that movie -- I loved it!
I love that film, I was obsessed with it for a minute when it came out.
Only just realised her father is the great Roger Deakins
I had to look her up, she's no longer acting but she is a lawyer now looks like maybe she was in college when she was acting
You should add Volunteers to your list. Highly underrated comedy IMO with John Candy and Tom Hanks.
Lucy Deakins was a major crush back in the day. She's an attorney in Colorado now.
Here we go!! Time for some more comedy!!! Ashleigh is laughing A LOT lately, which means we've got tears and screams coming, too!!
Can't have Sunshine without Rain.
I need more screams, hallobeans can’t come fast enough
Ashleigh correctly predicted every scene just before it happened.
The Great Outdoors and Summer Rental are my favorite John Candy movies.
Same!!
Absolute +1 on Summer Rental
Miss John Candy. RIP
One of my brother in laws picked John up from the Vancouver airport back in the late 80's and he was a very nice guy.
I haven't seen this movie in years.
John Candy and Dan Aykroyd are both legendary funny men and great Canadians 🍁
25:56 - Ashleigh, it absolutely kills be that you just casually sing along with various songs in various movies, and your voice is *so beautiful!* ❤
Our miniature southern bandit pandas don't get the love they deserve in the world. They're just misunderstood. Great reaction!!!
Glad you caught the end credit scene! As a kid I also loved the racoon scenes so much!
End credit scenes before end credit scenes were cool. lol
The bear was named Bart. There's a documentary about him. It's beautiful and heartbreaking. RIP Bart.
Ashleigh's facial reactions are a whole nother level of impeccable.
For more Dan Aykroyd, watch "Dragnet"! Also starring a very young Tom Hanks! Hilarious! Also watch Dan in "Doctor Detroit"!
PAGAN= People against Goodness and normalcy. Definitely a fitting movie for these times!
the majority of The Great Outdoors was filmed at Bass Lake.
So glad you were finally able to watch this! This was one of the films my sisters and I would watch together as kids. It's a classic in our household!
24:23 'Exit, pursued by bear' - Stage direction from Shakespeare's 'The Winter's Tale'.
I like the way they had the bear in the credits!
I'm sorry, but to capture all of the Shakespeare-y goodness of that sentence, I simply must insist we refrain from modernizing the original Elizabethan English. *clears throat*
Exeunt, pursued by a bear.
Now, let the hysterics commence. 😁
I love this movie. I didn't get to see it until it came out on VHS, when I was 12. My little 12 year old self loved every minute of this movie,
and I still do to this day.
Same! Been watching it on and off every summer since I was 5! Love this movie.
@@pumkinheadfanvhsforever6087 same
One of the great 80’s comedies i still love to revisit now and never seems to get old.
"Where you two little gremlins going?" 😆 🤣 😂 that was funny. I came up with this movie as a kid 😆 one of my favs. Keep up the terrific work 👌 👏 👍
If raccoons don't produce their own spit are you implying raccoons produce spit for someone else? LOL
1941 is another one with john candy, dan Ackroyd in not as main chars but ;) its a fun film
Growing up in Alabama we used to catch fireflies and tie strings to their legs and fly them around like our own personal kites.
This is both classic John Hughes and classic John Candy. I love this move! So freaking funny! Love this reaction Ashleigh!
Another film with A LOT of comedians is HARLEM NIGHTS
starring Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Red Fox, Robin Harris, Charlie Murphy & Della Reese.
I get my mouth all ready for some orange juice and there's only one swallow left in the container.
@@UtopiaTX LOL! When Della Reese calls Benny (Red Fox) the "stupidest MF-er in captivity" I lose it every time.
I watched this movie as an eight year old, and would watch it every other month for years. This and Caddy Shack. Love these movies.
I'd like to recommend Adventures in Babysitting - perfect millennial movie, Thor is even in it!!!
And the Kingpin.
Thor/Private Pyle.
"They didn't have any faces!"
"O my gawd!"
"Nothing?"
"Just a pool of mushy goo!"
"Like Spaghetti-Os?"
""Like Spaghetti-Os with MEAT!"
Great movie! Elizabeth Shue is underrated.
NOT Chris Hemsworth... just so she's not confused lol

Canadian Bacon came out after Wagon's East but I think was filmed before Wagon's East. Both are great underrated Candy movies.
Yeah places like where Peewee Herman was caught 😁
John Candy is my favorite actor. Cool Runnings is another great movie of his.
And he also has a small cameo in Little Shop of Horrors (1986) (Theatrical cut). It stars Rick Moranis and has Steve Martin in his greatest-ever role. You'll seriously love his singing and dancing. HOWEVER, there is one thing about the movie I suspect you'll hate and be unable to ignore the whole time.
I think she is going to watch LSH in October
@@brianhammond2832 no, it needs to be the 23rd day of September. Perfect movie before the start of Hallobeans!
On the twenty-third day of the month of September
In an early year of a decade not too long before our own
The human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence
And this terrifying enemy surfaced, as such enemies often do
In the seemingly most innocent and unlikely of places
Little shop, little shop of horrors
Little shop, little shop of terror
Call a cop, little shop of horrors
No, oh-oh-oh, no-oh
@@brianhammond2832 That'd be great! hopefully it's not the "director's cut"
@@boshooda No, it ought to be that version, it's the closest version we have to Frank Oz's vision.
@@christopherwall2121 nope, the director's cut just doesn't work for so many reasons. The theatrical version is the way to go. Of course, the deleted scenes are interesting to watch on their own since so much work went into them.
Cool Runnings with John Candy is a MUST for sure!! Next patron poll, keep the John Candy love rolling!
Kinda surprised you didn’t notice Fred Savage from The Wonder Years, and this was also Annette Bening’s first big movie. Thanks for sharing.
She was in the Boy Who Could Fly.
@@zerubbabelsbridge thanks. I wasn't aware of that movie
The reason she didn't notice Fred Savage is because Fred Savage isn't in this movie, the kid's name is Ian Giatti.
@@deraykrause4517 whoops. My bad. Should've looked it up before I posted
@@ianfeuerhake1859 haha no worries. I haven't seen this movie since it first came out, and in my mind I remembered Fred being in it. Watching her review I was thinking to myself, wow did something happen to Fred's face? I had to IMDB that sh!t before I realized what was going on. 🤣
"Bart the bear" was in a lot of movies and TV shows and was indeed a big boy at 1,779lbs and 9 foot, 7 inches tall. In case anyone is wondering, they didn't shave him, he's wearing a prosthetic rubber butt.
i love this movie! great reaction, you should check out summer rental its a good one too
We say "Processing nicely" from time to time, when we've gone too far.
My wife also had a raccoon as a kid. They used to take it on road trips in the motor home.
If you want more simple 80s Comedies, I'd recommend:
- Weekend at Bernie's (1989)
- Twins (1988)
- Inner Space (1987)
Bernie's is a little on the dark side. Not sure it's up Ashleigh's alley.
@@glenerickson358 Dark Side?... It ain’t Star Wars! 🤪😂
I literally was just talking about this movie the other day.. and boom you review it. :)
She saw Weird Science, it's on the channel.
@@tonyrossell832 Yeah I discovered last night. Somehow I missed that?
John Candy did a romcom film a couple years before he died with Ally Sheedy called "Only The Lonely". It's really good and shows more of what a good actor he was.
Is it a "good" movie? Nope
Is it a standard 80s sit com movie? Yep
Is John Candy ALWAYS worth watching? Yes!
Is this movie one of my favorite movies? Also yes
One of those movies that is much, much better than it should be and it's mostly because of one guy.
