It's not a parody of Star Trek, it's a love letter to both the show and its fans. In my humble opinion, it's one of the very few "perfect" movies I've ever seen, I absolutely love it.
Spaceballs is a parody and a spoof, Galaxy Quest is a parody and a love letter. You have to REALLY love something to be able to make fun of it so well.
If anything, it is a parody of fan culture and typecast actors who can't escape their one big role. Two of the characters are probably loosely based on Nimoy and Shatner, but even then it isn't 1:1 parody like Spaceballs.
David Mamet actually called this a perfect movie too. The relationship between Tim Allen's character and his castmates is definitely inspired by Shatner's relationship with his!
It only didn't get as much money from the box office because marketers didn't know how to advertise for a movie like this. It didn't really fit any obvious genres. It's a parody of star trek, so you can't really sell it like a star trek film because you'll just piss off a lot of star trek fans. And yet even as a parody, it does it so well that it is a great movie in its own rite. Even for parodies like space balls I couldn't really say the same, since it riffs off of star wars so heavily that a lot of the jokes wouldn't make sense if you hadn't seen it.

I love this movie and I do have the DVD but I never knew that was an option. But honestly it sounds awful....just like Puni Puni Poemy and the track that makes everything oinking pigs. Funny at first but jesus would not want to watch the movie that way lol. Still fun knowing that. I love knowing useless movie knowledge like that.
I love to point this out to people as well.. the fact that they took the time to dub in the Thermian language is just.. it adds another level of perfect to the movie.

True Story: Patrick Stewart (at first) refused to go see this film, because this was after TNG had wrapped up, while still in the next-gen era of Trek (DS9, Voyager, Enterprise), and he thought that it was another low-brow parody movie (they were turning into a plague at the time) and they were going to make fun of the show. Jonathan Frakes called him up and told him he had to go see it. So, on the word of his on-screen second-in-command, he went to see it, and said it was one of the most brilliant movies he ever saw, that even for its silliness in parts, it was a brilliant examination of and love letter to the science fiction genre and what a powerful, positive force it can be to society. For my part, I took a science fiction literature class in college a few years after this film released, and my professor said pretty much the same thing. He also said that this wasn't technically a "science fiction movie", but that it was "a movie - perhaps the ONLY movie - ABOUT science fiction". Though steeped in pop culture tropes, it embodies the quote by Isaac Asimov: "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today - but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all."
You forgot to mention Sir Patrick Stewart's quote, "Why didn't we think of this," realizing Star Trek could have done this if Galaxy Quest didn't do it first. Honestly, I just feel that he's upset that he didn't get to play himself acting like a Hollywood snob on the bridge of the Enterprise.
@@Ncyphen A long time ago I read a short story where the main three from the TOS cast are beamed on to the real Enterprise via a Mirror, Mirror kind of accident. Shatter thinks they are playing a joke on him until he realizes the set has a ceiling. It has that kind of vibe. I think it was in a book and feel like it was actually written by David Gerrold but I can't find it with google.
I didn't see this movie until a few years after it was out for exactly this reason. When I saw the commercials for it I thought, "Great, now they are going to do the whole Scary Movie treatment to Star Trek!?" and so I wrote it off. I was a fool!
Sigourney Weaver had all the best lines in this movie. "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!" is one that just doesn't get enough attention.
I never thought of it as a "had to" thing. It's so obvious, I just considered it part of the joke. Like, maybe the translator changed it so it could be included in the historical documents.
"I've never seen a shirtless Tim Allen." This is a joke about William Shatner from the original series, who was always getting his shirt torn up. This is simultaneously a parody of and an homage to both the Star Trek series and their fandom. If you've never seen the original series, you're probably missing a lot of the in-jokes, but it's a great fun show on it's own. When this came out, Star Trek: The Next Generation was big. The cast of the show thought it was going to be a mockery, and Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard) refused to see it. But Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) called him up and said "It's not what you think, you have to see it! In a crowded theater!" He went, and said no one in the theater was laughing as hard as he was. He realized it wasn't a mockery, but a love letter to the show and its fans.
Exactly. It is movie about Star Trek rather than just a Star Trek movie. It's about the culture and relationships between the cast and the audience rather than being a story set in the world

Galaxy Quest isn’t so much a parody of Star Trek culture and Sci-Fi convention culture, but more like a satire of these things. Satires and parodies are very similar, closely related types of comedy, but are significantly different from each other. Parodies use almost exclusively direct references to what is being made fun of, thus they’re not as funny when you don’t know the references. Satires make more general references to what’s being made fun of, and is thus funny to a wider audience.
For me the best part of this movie was how Alan Rickman's character came to realize how much his character meant to other people and how much he inspired them. No matter how much he hated the character, he learned to occasionally put other peoples needs and desires above his own

I don't think that's quite the moral for that character, because he was always turning up with the rest of the cast, even though he didn't want to, and I think he did it because he was loyal to his cast, not for the money. So he always was doing the ethical thing. But what changed was, as you said, he came to realise what the character and the show meant to other people, and that gave him joy in what he did.

Supposedly Sam Rockwell adlibbed that scream and it wasn't in the script. If you watch the scene, Sigourney Weaver really jumped when Sam screamed because she wasn't expecting it.
Sam is why I originally watched this movie. He was my favorite actor for a long time and I just had to watch everything he was in. I'm not a Sci-Fi person generally, but this movie won me over. I love it and it's one of my favorites to watch reaction videos for.
Everyone talks about Alan Rickman's performance, but the scene with Enrico Colantoni in sickbay is absolutely heart wrenching; having his whole world shattered.
He basically invented Thermians all by himself. How they talk and move couldn't be written in the script, it was just something he tried out. When anyone else asked the director how to act like a Thermian, they just pointed at him and said "do what he's doing."
Apparently Rickman and Tim Allen didn't exactly get along. After the sickbay scene with Enrico, Allen asked for a break because he was getting so emotional acting with Enrico. Rickman's response was that Tim Allen had finally experienced what acting was.
I genuinely think this is a perfect movie. It's a shame that it was not properly marketed when it came out. There's a really great documentary about it on Amazon Prime called "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" that I highly recommend. (edit: I didn't have the right name of the documentary originally)
The marketing totally let the film down. Galaxy Quest is like The Velvet Underground, unappreciated at the time, but do foundational that it affected everything.
I have not heard of "Never Give Up Never Surender" before but Galaxy Quest is a favorite movie of mine.... on so many levels . I will look for that in my Amazon Prime . Thank you for mentioning that . 🖖
I was home visiting my parents one weekend and my Dad and I went to the library to get some movies. We picked up Galaxy Quest knowing nothing about it but we both liked Tim Allen so we gave it a try. I can't remember a time I laughed so much with my Dad, he's gone now but it is a great memory.

He loved to laugh and Seinfeld and the David Letterman show were his favorite so when I went home for an extended stay at the end we would watch Seinfeld and Letterman and we were just laugh together. The funny thing is, at a Star Trek convention in 2013, Galaxy quest was actually voted to be the 7th best Star Trek film (out of 13) by Star Trek fans... even though it's not a Star Trek film.
There's a saying Star Trek folk say about Galaxy Quest - "It's the best Star Trek movie we never made." Patrick Steward (who plays Captain Picard) was reluctant to see the movie when it came out, because he thought it was going to make fun of Star Trek, maybe make fun of him or his character, when one of his co-stars called him up and said "you need to see this, and you need to see if in a full theater" and he did and absolutely loved it.

The joke about "Fabricate some sort of rudimentary lathe" is a bit from a scene in the original star trek series where Kirk was fighting this reptile creature, Gorn, on a rocky planet and he scrounged the supplies to make a rudimentary cannon (gunpowder, etc). The rock creature fight was a joke on that whole scene.
My wife and I use that line on each other any time one of us is having some kind of trouble finishing some project we are working on around the house. "Look around you… can you fashion some sort of rudimentary lathe? " LOL!
One Star Trek fact to know - - When the original show ended, Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock, wrote an autobiography titled "I Am Not Spock", because he felt trapped by the role in getting new ones. Later on, he got over it, became more accepting of the success of the films, and later wrote another book, "I Am Spock"!
He ate up the cons too. He really seemed to love being around fans and would play with them and joke. It must be a funny position to be in. To want other roles to continue acting in things etc, but to have created something so iconic that it becomes forever a part of human culture but to not really understand that yet. I'm just very glad he did come to terms with it.

Almost every cast member has talked about this too. They went through a period where they wanted to move beyond the Star Trek roles and stop being known for just that but after years of seeing the impact they had on people they grew to embrace it.
Fun fact: Sam Rockwell's scream after they get to the ship was not scripted. The other actors didn't know it was coming, so their reaction to it is real!
By Grabthar's Hammer, what a review! 3:16 That's a reference to Jeri Ryan, who had joined Star Trek Voyager a year earlier and whose interviews mostly consisted of her being asked how she was able to get into her catsuits. 3:37 Tim Allen's character is a blatant expy of William Shatner during his Star Trek days, right down to this exact feeling. 4:00 Alan Rickman's character is an expy of all the classically trained Shakespeare actors who've done prestige movies and great works of fiction but are primarily remembered for one thing beyond all others. Think Alec Guinness for Star Wars, Leonard Nimoy for Star Trek and Patrick Stewart from the early days of Next Generation. 19:40 As had been pointed out by others, the movie was meant to be rated R, but the studio wanted it to be PG-13, so they had to cut a lot of stuff, like excessive swearing and the fact that Tony Shaloub's character was high all the time. This moment is the most blatantly obvious fact of that.
Also, the rock monster is a reference to Star Trek V, which William Shatner originally wanted to end with Kirk fighting giant rock monsters, but the budget ran out. ALSO also, the villain Sarris is named after film critic Andrew Sarris, who gave the producer's previous movies harsh reviews.
If I recall correctly, Sigourney Weaver's character at the part with the "death chamber" where she says "fuck that!" was one of the few cuss words they actually left in and could stay PG-13. I'm not sure why it is censored now, perhaps because it was adapted to be shown on tv, but personally, I think that's perhaps one of the best uses of a cuss word in cinematic history.
I love the overdub, it reminds me of the ADR of "Vegas" for "Dallas" in Dr Strangelove (JFK was assassinated in Dallas while the movie was in post production).
In fact, with the exception of that bad dub, (which by the way Sigourney Weaver says was intentionally bad), so much of the film was edited down that it ended up getting a PG rating instead.
Daryl Mitchell who played Tommy was involved in an accident about 2 years after this move and is now paralysed from the waist down. He still works as an actor and founded the Daryl Mitchell Foundation to raise awareness of spinal cord injury.
I _just_ found out about this a few days ago, despite his injury being over 20 years ago. He had memorable parts that I love in "Sgt. Bilko" and "10 Things I Hate About You", and I went looking to see what he'd been up to.
There are so many great lines in this movie. Anytime it comes up in ANYTHING, my wife and I race to say "I see you managed to get your shirt off" or "Does the rolling help?" or "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy." Alan Rickman's delivery of the Grabthar's Hammer line still gives me chills after dozens of viewings.
One thing I love is how the Grapthar's Hammer line changes. Earlier in the movie when they were at the ribbon cutting you could almost feel Alexander's (Alan Rickman) soul die. Then when Quellec dies- he puts so much feeling in the line that you know he means it and means business. Alan Rickman was a legend.
9:47 Enrico Colantoni who played Mathesar is the person who came up with how the Thermians talk and move. During his audition he first did a normal sounding reading (which the director said was great), but then he asked to also do it with the signature weird Thermian intonation which he based on a vocal warm up exercise that many actors do before going on stage. The director loved it, and Colantoni became the on set expert in Thermian speech and body language. When new extras joined the cast to play Thermians, they were told "See that guy (Colantoni)? Do whatever he does."
YOU: "This is no time to have an existential crisis." EVERYONE ELSE: These people are being confronted with the fact that an alien race has based their entire civilization on your acting job. This is the PERFECT time to have an existential crisis.

He can take a cantankerous character in a crazy film whose script couldn't decide if it was a parody send up of Star Trek or an homage, and Alan Rickman gives a performance that starts in the depths of self centered depravity yet launches like a comet into the stratosphere. Alan Rickman is was and forever shall be a STAR. Stellar performances, and Galaxy Quest is no exception.
I believe with all my heart that this is one of Alan Rickman’s finest performances. He had me all the way through this movie. I love him and miss him so much!
This was the first time i can remember seeing Alan. It made such an impression that when I saw the casting for Harry Potter my reaction was "Hey, its the Galaxy Quest guy!"
There's a story that, during the scene with Mathezar and Jason explaining to him that the show wasn't real, that they lied, Tim Allen got overwhelmed and had to step away for a moment. And as he walked away Alan Rickman said "I think he just experienced acting."
There is a similar story from Home Improvement where he stopped filming because he thought Patricia Richardson was upset and she goes "It's called acting, Tim"
The bit where Quellig dies...gets just about everyone. Here's this character you know next to nothing about, and have only seen for a matter of minutes, total. And they manage to make him endearing enough, and connect him sufficiently to Dr Lazarus, that when he dies, and Alan Rickman delivers the line he SO hated for so long...it's just a gut-punch. . This is a ridiculous movie full of plot holes and dumb things. But it is still definitely fun...and then for them to have pulled off a scene with that kind of gravity in the middle of the whole thing...that by itself a hell of a thing that hardly any other movie or show has ever succeeded at.
That "By Grapthar's hammer" scene surprised many people by its emotional power. Delivering that line that he so despised, but with REAL meaning for the very first time really elevated it to another level.
That's just the pure talent of Alan Rickman on show there. Shame we lost him so young. He's one I wish could have lived forever. And yes, to me he was still young, maybe not twenties kind of young, but he wasn't 90 lol.
As to how Fred knows the tech, he doesn't. There's a great deleted scene that has him taking a tour of the engineering deck, slyly asking questions that will give him information. When the crisis happens, he questions the Thermians as if he's a professor testing their knowledge, and then approves of their "correct" answers. Then he just relays the info to Jason as if he knew it all along.
There's also a deleted scene where they show him smoking weed before going to space which explains why he looks and sounds completely out of it. The man was high the whole time and was just having the time of this life.

The fact that Sam Rockwell was in this the same year as The Green Mile is amazing. Having seen both at the time of release, it really demonstrated the guys incredible range. Incredible actor. (and hilarious knowing that despite all of Guy's fears about dying, he was the only one that wasn't shot and killed by Saris at the end.) Also Tony Shalhoub's character is so chill because originally this was meant to be R rated. And his character was a stoner. He wasn't bothered by anything because he was high as fuck. And yeah, this isn't a parody. It's a love-letter.
Now that I think about it, the TV show "Other Space" is probably referencing this movie, since it also has a Chief Engineer character who acts high all the time (played by the original guy from MST-3K). Worth seeing if you haven't already, though be warned it's pretty low budget.
Sam Rockwell's scream ("It is a valid reaction!") just after they arrive on the ship was ad-libbed. Watch Sigourney Weaver - she wasn't expecting it and gave a very realistic jump as a result. Fred's constant snacking would seem to explain his lack of urgency - he's pretty much baked for the first half of the movie.
The guy that plays “guy” is Sam Rockwell who went on to win a Tony, Academy award, and numerous other acting accolades for his performances. You need to watch Charlie’s Angels. He’s in that too.

I'm so glad you loved it. I played a stage hand at the Con. those scenes took a week to film. Galaxy Quest is a sweetheart gem With the joke being how it started off mirroring the original Start Trek TV show, and conventions with over enthusiastic fans and and SNL sketch with Willaim Shatner cracking at the the podium and yelling at fans that it weass only a tv show, and there was no ship. Other than its a completely original story and people love it.👍😀🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
It occurred to me when I first saw this movie that, after Rickman's character said that line to the dying Thermian, he would never be able to say it again in such a flippant way as he did at the mall opening. It would have too much meaning for him. I was a grown man when I first saw this movie, and my allergies kicked in during that scene. Watery eyes are such a pain. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Also, after seeing it, I told my sister, "so, Fred was smoking pot when he wasn't on screen, huh?" She didn't catch it, but I picked up on all the clues, especially his constant munchies. I believe it has been confirmed that Shalhoub was playing the character that way. One last thing, Ashleigh. You didn't have the edited version. Weaver's F-Bomb was overdubbed so they could get the rating they wanted. This is exactly the way it was shown in theaters. Anyway, one of my top 5 favorite movies.
Yeah, was a grown man, didn't know what to expect, was suspicious, not a Trekker, BUT... Surprised, it was REALLY funny, NOT cheap, there were some EMOTIONALS moments (I'm triggered at all: "We lied", "You shall be revenged", etc.). The quality of the CGI was quite good. A family movie without being dumb. And adult level comedy with empathy. Maybe one of my top 3 comedy movies.
@DanEcho67 Ohhh, I did not know that about Sigourney Weaver's super obvious F-bomb. I watched this movie online years after it came out and wondered how I got a censored copy.
If you see the bonus extras on the DVD you can see a few deleted scenes that made it more clear Tony Schalub's character was supposed to be high. They had to cut the scenes to hit PG-13. You never see him actually smoke in the deleted scenes but there's more implications that he does.
Gwen’s “well screw that” while her lips clearly say something else is actually the theatrical and DVD release version. I suspect they only shot it with her swearing and had no alternate shots to use when trying to avoid a PG-13 rating, so they just dubbed the “fuck” out of it. In my head, I imagine that since no one on the TV show would have been allowed to swear, the Thermians built some kind of technology into the ship that actively prevents people from doing so… either way, the juxtaposition of lips and words is very funny.
I belonged to a Star Trek club that was aligned with a bunch of other sci fi clubs when this movie came out. Our president worked for the cinema chain and would get us an early showing of all the sci fi movies that were coming out and they'd sell tickets with the proceeds going to charity. When this movie came out, we were all told to come dressed for a Con if possible (it was at 7pm after work on a Friday night). Well we had Klingons and Dr Whovians, Red Dwarf fans, Storm Troopers, Red shirts you name it plus those of us in normal clothes (because I didn't have time to go home and change) and when the opening credits rolled to show the convention audience, we just lost it. Was one of the best nights ever... plus we did get to hear Sigourney say the F word!
I always assumed that they dubbed that in as a meta reference to the structures of network television. I believe, though this may not have been the case when the movie was released, that a PG-13 movie gets a 1 f-bomb budget.

There is a deleted scene where Gwen unzips her uniform to distract a couple of enemy alien guards. With that being cut there is no explanation for why she is suddenly unzipped.
Fun fact: on the DVD, one of the language tracks is Thermian, the alien language. It sounds just like in the film, and yes, it's for the whole movie. Also, Sarris has some amazing creature features. I love how his antenna move around, and his "plumage" flares out when he gets angry. Another fun fact is that it has multiple aspect ratios. It starts with 4:3, old TV ratio for the old TV show scene. Then it moves to 1.85:1 (about 16:9) for the stuff while Tim Allen thinks he's on Earth. Then, once he realizes the truth when the pod bay doors open, it goes to 2.35:1 (about 21:9), a standard for action films and scifi.
This is considered an official Star Trek movie by many fans, even though it’s not Star Trek, because of how amazing it is. It pays so much respect to the original series while also creating its own mythos. So great. 10/10!
The fact that it bridges the gap in the Star Trek curse probably helps (it is an even numbered film, while the controversial Nemesis/Into Darkness become odd-numbered).

4:45, this scene was inspired by a real incident that happened to William Shatner at a 1996 Star Trek Convention, where he was called a fraud while using the restroom. He was hurt by the ordeal.
As a 43-year old man that grew up watching "Alien", I can confirm that Sigourney Weaver is an amazing actress, and is ALWAYS incredibly beautiful. SHe was then, is now, and will be when she's 187. Fact.
When this movie came out I was part of a Star Trek community and I was one of those hopeless nerds who knew every detail from the technical manuals. And actually we had discussions like "does it make sense, that this system is connect with this?" It was a great time and when this movie came to the theatres we all instantly loved it. It suddenly felt like we where part of a much bigger community. I don't think that there is any TV show today that gets nearly as much love from it's fans as Star Trek did.
For my part, I say that as long as Star Trek lovers exist in this world, there is hope that we can make it through another century. Mr. Roddenberry, it seems, was more influential than he knew. 😊 (Hmmmm. Had he never lived, would we really have gone through the Eugenics Wars in the 90's, et cetera ad infinitum? Would Kirk have to once again penetrate the Guardian of Forever to ensure his own existence by eliminating Gene Roddenberry? 🤔 😬 It's a certainty that this thought has occurred to tens of thousands of aficionados over the decades, but it's always delicious to savor.) 🤯
Joke all you like, folks. We know perfectly well it's MORE than a TV show. The evidence is all around those with senses to see and hear with - unless you've adjusted them to admit only certain frequencies. 🙂
Missi Pyle makes me swoon, even as an alien. Enrico Colantoni came up with the mannerisms and speech patterns himself. The director loved, so he taught it to everyone else to use in the movie.
I knew before starting the video that she would say "Tim Allen can get it" once he lost his shirt. Also, if you think Sigourney Weaver looks good with any hair, Alien 3 showed us she also looks good with no hair.
Still love Alien 3 for it's atmosphere and cinematography but man, has the studio butchered that movie. I still can't get over that the experience was so terrible that David Fincher nearly quit making movies over it. What a loss that would have been.
OH MY GOSH, YOU KNOW WHAT "MONK" IS. It's my favourite show ever and I'm so excited you recognized him. This movie means SO much to me, and not just because Alan Rickman's in it. I love showing it to people because they're always floored by it. I had a friend who literally cried of laughter when the spaceship hit the space station. When I went to my first convention and was in line to meet someone, I looked around and went- "Oh my gosh. I'm in 'Galaxy Quest'." It nailed fan culture in such a wonderful way.
Tony Shalhoub played Antionio Scarpatchi (scar patch) a loser cab driver on Wings. He was only supposed to be in one episode but he nailed it and became a regular.
I remember watching this movie with my late mom a few years ago. She was a huge Star Trek fan and got me into it too. We had a blast watching this movie. Everything about it was great, from the cast to the comedy and the story, and is honestly one of the best Star Trek films that isn't Star Trek! Instantly became one of our all time favorite films!
Much like The Orville is the best current Star Trek series. The people behind it appear to know and love Trek far more than the people making the current official Trek series (except for Lower Decks, which is clearly made by fans and is great fun).

This is one of my favorite movies!!! I adore Sigourney. I actually met her once at her last performance of Mrs. Farnsworth at the Flea theater in NYC - her husband's off-off Broadway theater. She's gorgeous, and I found her super intimidating - not sure why...
A friend of mine won tickets to the opening of this film. I came along as the "plus one." We expected it to be pretty lame, based on the promos we'd seen. Totally caught off guard when it turned out to be such a funny, well-written, original concept. When it airs as a rerun, I almost always watch it start to finish.
My first memory of Tony was in a movie called "Quick Change" with Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid. He almost stole the entire movie with his supporting role in a movie full of comedic performers.
His most emotional acting roll (IMHO) was playing Agent Frank Haddad opposite Denzel Washington in "The Siege" (1998). Monk was his baby from start to finish. He developed that character from the ground up and played it perfectly.
The reason I kinda hate Monk is because I love seeing Tony play a completely different character in every movie he's in, and playing the same character on a TV show week after week sucked up the time he could have been doing that.
This movie is to Star Trek and its fandom what Spinal Tap is to metal rock and its fans. It's a loving, humorous look at a subculture. It's like family members poking gentle fun at each other, and it hits all the notes perfectly, which is why it's so beloved. An absolutely wonderful movie that will never become old or tiresome.
Holy cow this film rules. There's an excellent documentary about it you should try, it's VERY clear that everyone involved are still hugely proud of it, and they're right to be. Look at that CAST! Look at the SCRIPT! Look at the STORY! Look at the JOKES! Look at the EFFECTS! Look at the love it has for the subject AND the fans! Easily a top 3 Star Trek movie, and as a great man once said, it's a perfect movie. (David Mamet).
I love when the soldier hits and slides across the windshield, they look like humanoid insects and it’s like when you driving along and suddenly splat you hit a big grasshopper or dragonfly and it leaves a big smear on the windshield. Alan Rickman did sadly pass away about 6 years ago, a week after David Bowie. They died at the same age from the same illness
Them both dying was a gut punch, I was in mourning like I lost my own family. I wish she’d watch Dogma so she could see Alan in that as well, I love that movie. Might be hard for her to get a copy though, I don’t ever lend out my copy.
Actually, they did NOT die of the same illness, Alan Rickman died of pancreatic cancer and David Bowie died of liver cancer. They're two different organs, serving similar purposes though. And actually Bowie died January 10th 2016 whereas Alan died January 14th, 2016, both at 69 years old. 2016 is also the year Prince died, and a very heavy handful of other very influential people and ones I'd idolized in my life. Everyone whining about 2020-now and I still say 2016 was worse lol.
“Sigorney Weaver looks great with any hair” I laughed at that… try the Alien sequels where Ripley has a crew cut/shaved head… she looks pretty damn good with no hair too!
Yes, this is a good representation of what a comicon is like... crowds of fans in cosplay to show their appreciation for their favorite characters, going to panels to hear their favorite stars speak and answer questions, roaming the dealer room to nab nifty bits and bobs of fan-love stuff, lining up to pay ridiculous amounts of money to get a favorite actor's autograph and/or picture, and just basically having a really good time!! --- You definitely need to go to one and cosplay while you are at it.
It's an experience for sure. And it's exactly what you said during the film... why make fun of someone who just likes what they like. A con is people of all sorts from all over who come together over a shared like of a thing, and it's crazy, weird, and wonderful.
@@ksavage681 I have never been to THE comicon but I went to my first Trek convention in 1975, and then discovered Dr. Who in the 1990's so yeah, been to many, many, many, many cons, lol. Always a great time!
I feel like the relationship _Galaxy Quest_ has with _Star Trek_ is similar to the relationship the Marvel Cinematic Universe has with the comics: you don’t need to “do the homework” to have a great time… but if you do, there are a lot of Easter eggs and references that make it all the more enjoyable.
That's actually a very good take, I never thought about it like that. But yeah, when you think of it that's true of any movie adaptation of different source material, if it's well done you'll recognise stuff from the original material they couldn't really dedicate any significant time to in the various details. :)
This movie is really a tribute to Star Trek. So it's okay to see it when you haven't seen any Trek, but it's maybe not as layered for you as it is for someone who grew up with Trek. I'm so glad you loved it! REALLY looking forward to Mr. Smith Goes to Washington! That is such an excellent movie. And 9 to 5 is a lot of fun. Have a great week!
I am so glad you finally watched this! And thanks for including the Gilligan's Island moment. There is nothing in this that is not perfect. From the big to the little. Their ship ID starts with NTE, for Not The Enterprise. Fred is stoned the whole way thru, which is why he is mellow and munching. He didn't come up with the endothermic solar sailing, his techs did. Sigourney's open uniform bit came from a deleted scene between the chompers and the button, wherein she started a seduction of the aliens that had caught up to them. Oh, and we ALL got the edited version of her reaction. They dubbed in "screw" after the screeners objected to the obvious choice. Great reaction to another great movie!
This movie also came out at the end of a time where being nerdy/geeky and into science fiction or science fiction universes (the biggest of which from conventions and the like was star trek) was decidedly outside the main stream, just before the culture changed and it became much more mainstream (partially through Marvel movies, partially through other cultural changes like the internet showing lots of communities and interests and what not).
I miss the time when nerd culture was a special group. It was untouched by the wanna be's and the outsiders who took advantage of the fans. Then they pushed the true fans aside to produce schlock, destroy franchises, and call anyone for exposing the spiritless and less than intelligent excrement a bunch of toxic fans.
I think too that we had reached a time when everyday tech had become so complex that the nerd became a valuable member of society. Everybody wanted know a nerd (at least a tech nerd) to fix their stuff the way people like to know a good plumber or mechanic.
I'd say it's more of a homage than a parody. It certainly has more of the Star Trek spirit, feel, and message than some of the newer Star Trek series and films.
Like, there's a fair amount of skewering, but unlike so many other shows/movies to me it feels like Galaxy Quest is genuinely poking fun out of love instead of mockery.
My head cannon about Sigourney's character's character: Real language comprehension is incredibly complicated for computers. Rather then risking potential problems, the NSEA assigned an extremely limited number of people to be trained and authorized to give verbal commands to the ship's computer, and programmed the computer to ignore anyone else talking. Repeating back the computer is part of protocol for the same reason as repeating back orders in the Navy, sacrificing effeciency to reduce potential catastrophic errors.
you make it sound like a parody is insulting the work instead of being a comedic homage to the work which is what they are... in most cases. Like people love scary movies but scary movie is paying homage to as well as making fun of horror movie cliches
@@magus104 yeah, you're not wrong, I guess I was trying to differentiate between the more absurd parody, like Scary Movie, Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Space Balls, and the like and how this one doesn't break the consistency of the movie for goofy asides that are winking at the audience. @@JoshuaKirtley I think this movie is hard to place with other parodies because it is such a perfect movie in it's own right that it transcends the parody genre. It is a parody movie but it is the best parody movie ever made. It works as it's own movie without needing much knowledge of what it is parodying. It's an incredibly funny comedy that has really dramatic and heart wrenching scenes. Most importantly it is never really mean spirited in it's comedy so it becomes a feel good movie in the end. I don't know if there is a perfect movie or not but this one would come close.

I loved Zaheed in ME2. One of my favorite squadmates and I was blown away when I realized he played Sarris. He was also in Jurassic Park 2. I think he was dad of girl attacked by compies
It is a parody, but the best parodies come from a place of love. Being able to laugh at yourself and see the inherent silly-ness (and beauty) in your cultural touchstones is one of the keys to an enjoyable life.
It was a star trek parody, but it was also a behind the scenes parody. Leonard Nimoy genuinely hated the character of Spock, then grew to appreciate what he meant to fans and even himself deep down. William Shatner had a gigantic ego, just like Tim Allen's character, thinking of himself as the star of the show at the expense of his castmates. Galaxy Quest was an all around clever and funny movie.
Fun fact: Monk's character was supposed to be high the entire time, but they cut the scene of him getting high so now he just seems really unbothered for no reason lol
No - not for no reason. If you look carefully, every scene in which the rest the rest of the cast were shown that all the stuff that was happening was real, Fred arrived late or missed it until after/during the digitizer scene. Until then, I think Tech Sgt. Chen considered it all a very elaborate high production value set. The reason he fainted with Liari is because that was the first time he realized she was an actual alien.
@@Cyclone001c That checks out. I still thought that they were doing a "if you know, you know" with Chen being stoned without showing it. I've heard there is a deleted scene of him getting high sometime before getting taken to outer space but it was cut to get a lower rating which makes sense why he's late/not getting it until the alien reveal.
I love that they were able to poke a little fun at the fans but still treat them with respect. None of these shows would be around if it weren't for the fans who enjoy watching.
Back in 1974 there was a parody of Flash Gorgon called Flesh Gordon (would be considered R rated now-a-days). There was a line in it where they got off the space ship and the scientist took a big sniff and exclaimed "Good! There oxygen on this planet".
Since you brought it up, you do need to watch "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" at some point (if none of the others). Even if you know nothing about the franchise, taken on its own, it's one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. 😎

By the end of the 90’s into the first couple of years after, we were seeing games like UnReal, Half-Life, Deus-Ex, and the MMORPG, EverQuest. Speaking of EverQuest: did you know that the original reason for the “targeted auto-attack/skill-rotation” combat paradigm that pervaded MMORPGs for over a decade was because EQ popularized it as a way to deal with the extremely low data rates provided by dial-up internet? FPS gameplay was effectively impossible in the early years of MMOs due to high pings across the board when servers operated at that scale. There were still multiplayer FPS games like Starship: Tribes that could support up to 64 players in a match, though.
It wasn't just the latency and ping times of internet connections it was also the processing power of the servers themselves that couldn't handle a lot of concurrency.
Also, may I point out that the difference in graphics capability between 1990 and 1999 was so extreme that I wouldn't know how to describe it. The difference between a 2012 game and a 2022 game is less than what that decade saw from year to year...

For me, Sam Rockwell (who played Guy) stole every scene he was in. Absolutely hilarious. In 2018 he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
This movie is so underrated. It's the Shawshank of comedy features. The Alan Rickman payoff scene, one of my favorites of any movie. And the physical comedy is top notch.

I've seen Sam Rockwell in so many movies but "Is there AIR?! You don't know!!" Is still probably my favorite of his lines in his career. Also, you mentioned it seemed like Tim Allen was taking more than shots of alcohol and he was pretty famously arrested in Denver for having a bunch of cocaine 😂
Enrico Colantoni who played the lead alien, invented the way they talk. He did it for his audition, and the producers were blown away, hired him, and made him teach everybody how to do it.
My aunt showed me this movie specifically for Alan Rickman who had just been cast for the first Harry Potter movie. I loved it, even though back then I myself had never seen Star Trek. Now that I am older, I can get the little nods to everything from Star Trek. 🙂 Also you should ABSOLUTELY find yourself a Comic con! Look for your local cons and see what celebs may be in attendance bc a lot of times it will have at least one person you would LOVE to meet! I myself got to meet Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) in 2019. He did the Freddy laugh and had the glove. And he even showed me how to pose for the photo op so both our gloves were showing but we are basically hugging and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience 🥰 You will also just love all the fans costumes and try not to go broke in the dealers room buying merch! 😅 glad you loved this movie! It is one of my favs!
Its not actually a parody. A Parody is a joke version of an existing IP. While this IS a comedy its not actually a recreation of any existing IP. Its really just a comedy based on the entire SciFi genre. This movie was so underrated when it first came out, glad to see it gets so much love these days. Fun Fact, Sigourney Weaver was 50(!) years old when doing this movie... Talk about winning the genetic lottery, god damn.
Galaxy Quest, one of the very best Star Trek films ever made and/or as George Takei describes it “A chillingly realistic documentary.” Major shout-out to Alan Rickman’s superb performance in this film in general, and especially the scene where he sincerely utters the “By Grabthar's hammer” line.

It's not a parody of Star Trek, it's a love letter to both the show and its fans. In my humble opinion, it's one of the very few "perfect" movies I've ever seen, I absolutely love it.
Good parodies always are. You have to really understand the show to do it well.
Spaceballs is a parody and a spoof, Galaxy Quest is a parody and a love letter.
You have to REALLY love something to be able to make fun of it so well.
If anything, it is a parody of fan culture and typecast actors who can't escape their one big role. Two of the characters are probably loosely based on Nimoy and Shatner, but even then it isn't 1:1 parody like Spaceballs.
David Mamet actually called this a perfect movie too. The relationship between Tim Allen's character and his castmates is definitely inspired by Shatner's relationship with his!
It only didn't get as much money from the box office because marketers didn't know how to advertise for a movie like this. It didn't really fit any obvious genres. It's a parody of star trek, so you can't really sell it like a star trek film because you'll just piss off a lot of star trek fans. And yet even as a parody, it does it so well that it is a great movie in its own rite. Even for parodies like space balls I couldn't really say the same, since it riffs off of star wars so heavily that a lot of the jokes wouldn't make sense if you hadn't seen it.

@@zachariousmccool5768 I can usually get through maybe 5.. 10 minutes of the Thermian language dub version. It's great.. It's funny.. the fact that it actually runs through the entire movie for no reason other than to have it, is fantastic.
True Story: Patrick Stewart (at first) refused to go see this film, because this was after TNG had wrapped up, while still in the next-gen era of Trek (DS9, Voyager, Enterprise), and he thought that it was another low-brow parody movie (they were turning into a plague at the time) and they were going to make fun of the show. Jonathan Frakes called him up and told him he had to go see it. So, on the word of his on-screen second-in-command, he went to see it, and said it was one of the most brilliant movies he ever saw, that even for its silliness in parts, it was a brilliant examination of and love letter to the science fiction genre and what a powerful, positive force it can be to society.
For my part, I took a science fiction literature class in college a few years after this film released, and my professor said pretty much the same thing. He also said that this wasn't technically a "science fiction movie", but that it was "a movie - perhaps the ONLY movie - ABOUT science fiction". Though steeped in pop culture tropes, it embodies the quote by Isaac Asimov: "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinder critics and philosophers of today - but the core of science fiction, its essence, the concept around which it revolves, has become crucial to our salvation if we are to be saved at all."
Oh, to be in that movie theater when Sir Patrick watched this movie. He even said he laughed the longest and the hardest at jokes in the movie.

You forgot to mention Sir Patrick Stewart's quote, "Why didn't we think of this," realizing Star Trek could have done this if Galaxy Quest didn't do it first. Honestly, I just feel that he's upset that he didn't get to play himself acting like a Hollywood snob on the bridge of the Enterprise.
@@Ncyphen A long time ago I read a short story where the main three from the TOS cast are beamed on to the real Enterprise via a Mirror, Mirror kind of accident. Shatter thinks they are playing a joke on him until he realizes the set has a ceiling. It has that kind of vibe. I think it was in a book and feel like it was actually written by David Gerrold but I can't find it with google.
I didn't see this movie until a few years after it was out for exactly this reason. When I saw the commercials for it I thought, "Great, now they are going to do the whole Scary Movie treatment to Star Trek!?" and so I wrote it off.

I never thought of it as a "had to" thing. It's so obvious, I just considered it part of the joke. Like, maybe the translator changed it so it could be included in the historical documents.

"I've never seen a shirtless Tim Allen." This is a joke about William Shatner from the original series, who was always getting his shirt torn up.
This is simultaneously a parody of and an homage to both the Star Trek series and their fandom. If you've never seen the original series, you're probably missing a lot of the in-jokes, but it's a great fun show on it's own.
When this came out, Star Trek: The Next Generation was big. The cast of the show thought it was going to be a mockery, and Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard) refused to see it. But Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker) called him up and said "It's not what you think, you have to see it! In a crowded theater!" He went, and said no one in the theater was laughing as hard as he was. He realized it wasn't a mockery, but a love letter to the show and its fans.
There is a difference between laughing at something and laughing with something, and Galaxy Quest really shows you the difference.
Galaxy Quest has a lot more respect for Rhodenberry's vision for Star Trek than several of the newer canonical Star Trek shows (like Discovery)

Galaxy Quest isn’t so much a parody of Star Trek culture and Sci-Fi convention culture, but more like a satire of these things. Satires and parodies are very similar, closely related types of comedy, but are significantly different from each other. Parodies use almost exclusively direct references to what is being made fun of, thus they’re not as funny when you don’t know the references. Satires make more general references to what’s being made fun of, and is thus funny to a wider audience.
For me the best part of this movie was how Alan Rickman's character came to realize how much his character meant to other people and how much he inspired them. No matter how much he hated the character, he learned to occasionally put other peoples needs and desires above his own
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one.

I don't think that's quite the moral for that character, because he was always turning up with the rest of the cast, even though he didn't want to, and I think he did it because he was loyal to his cast, not for the money. So he always was doing the ethical thing. But what changed was, as you said, he came to realise what the character and the show meant to other people, and that gave him joy in what he did.
Sure. But his career ended with that role. He really highlighted the catch-22 of Hollywood of old, where once you get typecast, your career is over. You can now only play that one character according to the powers that be
Sam Rockwell really knocked it out of the park with this movie. The way he delivered his lines... and that scream. Just brilliant.
Supposedly Sam Rockwell adlibbed that scream and it wasn't in the script. If you watch the scene, Sigourney Weaver really jumped when Sam screamed because she wasn't expecting it.
He was the plucky comic relief!

Sam is why I originally watched this movie. He was my favorite actor for a long time and I just had to watch everything he was in. I'm not a Sci-Fi person generally, but this movie won me over. I love it and it's one of my favorites to watch reaction videos for.

Everyone talks about Alan Rickman's performance, but the scene with Enrico Colantoni in sickbay is absolutely heart wrenching; having his whole world shattered.
He basically invented Thermians all by himself. How they talk and move couldn't be written in the script, it was just something he tried out. When anyone else asked the director how to act like a Thermian, they just pointed at him and said "do what he's doing."
There's not a weak link in this movie.
Enrico is one of the best character actors we've ever had, and his turn as Keith Mars on "Veronica Mars" was TV dad icon material
Apparently Rickman and Tim Allen didn't exactly get along. After the sickbay scene with Enrico, Allen asked for a break because he was getting so emotional acting with Enrico. Rickman's response was that Tim Allen had finally experienced what acting was.

I genuinely think this is a perfect movie. It's a shame that it was not properly marketed when it came out. There's a really great documentary about it on Amazon Prime called "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" that I highly recommend. (edit: I didn't have the right name of the documentary originally)

Galaxy Quest is like The Velvet Underground, unappreciated at the time, but do foundational that it affected everything.
I have not heard of "Never Give Up Never Surender" before but Galaxy Quest is a favorite movie of mine.... on so many levels . I will look for that in my Amazon Prime . Thank you for mentioning that . 🖖

I was home visiting my parents one weekend and my Dad and I went to the library to get some movies. We picked up Galaxy Quest knowing nothing about it but we both liked Tim Allen so we gave it a try. I can't remember a time I laughed so much with my Dad, he's gone now but it is a great memory.

He loved to laugh and Seinfeld and the David Letterman show were his favorite so when I went home for an extended stay at the end we would watch Seinfeld and Letterman and we were just laugh together. The funny thing is, at a Star Trek convention in 2013, Galaxy quest was actually voted to be the 7th best Star Trek film (out of 13) by Star Trek fans... even though it's not a Star Trek film.

Patrick Steward (who plays Captain Picard) was reluctant to see the movie when it came out, because he thought it was going to make fun of Star Trek, maybe make fun of him or his character, when one of his co-stars called him up and said "you need to see this, and you need to see if in a full theater" and he did and absolutely loved it.

The joke about "Fabricate some sort of rudimentary lathe" is a bit from a scene in the original star trek series where Kirk was fighting this reptile creature, Gorn, on a rocky planet and he scrounged the supplies to make a rudimentary cannon (gunpowder, etc). The rock creature fight was a joke on that whole scene.
My wife and I use that line on each other any time one of us is having some kind of trouble finishing some project we are working on around the house. "Look around you… can you fashion some sort of rudimentary lathe? " LOL!
My dad use to call my mom Nancy as a joke when she wanted more salt on her food, Star Trek fans totally get who Nancy was.
The rock creature may also be a reference to the rock creatures they couldn't afford to put in Star Trek V.
Not to mention the show where Kirk & co. were taken to a planet where there actually was a "rock creature".

One Star Trek fact to know - - When the original show ended, Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock, wrote an autobiography titled "I Am Not Spock", because he felt trapped by the role in getting new ones. Later on, he got over it, became more accepting of the success of the films, and later wrote another book, "I Am Spock"!
He ate up the cons too. He really seemed to love being around fans and would play with them and joke. It must be a funny position to be in. To want other roles to continue acting in things etc, but to have created something so iconic that it becomes forever a part of human culture but to not really understand that yet. I'm just very glad he did come to terms with it.

Almost every cast member has talked about this too. They went through a period where they wanted to move beyond the Star Trek roles and stop being known for just that but after years of seeing the impact they had on people they grew to embrace it.

If I recall correctly, Sigourney Weaver's character at the part with the "death chamber" where she says "fuck that!" was one of the few cuss words they actually left in and could stay PG-13. I'm not sure why it is censored now, perhaps because it was adapted to be shown on tv, but personally, I think that's perhaps one of the best uses of a cuss word in cinematic history.
I love the overdub, it reminds me of the ADR of "Vegas" for "Dallas" in Dr Strangelove (JFK was assassinated in Dallas while the movie was in post production).
In fact, with the exception of that bad dub, (which by the way Sigourney Weaver says was intentionally bad), so much of the film was edited down that it ended up getting a PG rating instead.

He had memorable parts that I love in "Sgt. Bilko" and "10 Things I Hate About You", and I went looking to see what he'd been up to.
There are so many great lines in this movie. Anytime it comes up in ANYTHING, my wife and I race to say "I see you managed to get your shirt off" or "Does the rolling help?" or "Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy."
Alan Rickman's delivery of the Grabthar's Hammer line still gives me chills after dozens of viewings.

One thing I love is how the Grapthar's Hammer line changes. Earlier in the movie when they were at the ribbon cutting you could almost feel Alexander's (Alan Rickman) soul die. Then when Quellec dies- he puts so much feeling in the line that you know he means it and means business.
Alan Rickman was a legend.
9:47 Enrico Colantoni who played Mathesar is the person who came up with how the Thermians talk and move. During his audition he first did a normal sounding reading (which the director said was great), but then he asked to also do it with the signature weird Thermian intonation which he based on a vocal warm up exercise that many actors do before going on stage. The director loved it, and Colantoni became the on set expert in Thermian speech and body language. When new extras joined the cast to play Thermians, they were told "See that guy (Colantoni)? Do whatever he does."
He was awesome in Veronica Mars as Veronica's dad.

This was the first time i can remember seeing Alan. It made such an impression that when I saw the casting for Harry Potter my reaction was "Hey, its the Galaxy Quest guy!"

Ashleigh saying “Hentai?” has restored my life force, she is so funny.
The bit where Quellig dies...gets just about everyone. Here's this character you know next to nothing about, and have only seen for a matter of minutes, total. And they manage to make him endearing enough, and connect him sufficiently to Dr Lazarus, that when he dies, and Alan Rickman delivers the line he SO hated for so long...it's just a gut-punch.

This is a ridiculous movie full of plot holes and dumb things. But it is still definitely fun...and then for them to have pulled off a scene with that kind of gravity in the middle of the whole thing...that by itself a hell of a thing that hardly any other movie or show has ever succeeded at.
That "By Grapthar's hammer" scene surprised many people by its emotional power. Delivering that line that he so despised, but with REAL meaning for the very first time really elevated it to another level.
That's just the pure talent of Alan Rickman on show there. Shame we lost him so young. He's one I wish could have lived forever. And yes, to me he was still young, maybe not twenties kind of young, but he wasn't 90 lol.
As to how Fred knows the tech, he doesn't. There's a great deleted scene that has him taking a tour of the engineering deck, slyly asking questions that will give him information. When the crisis happens, he questions the Thermians as if he's a professor testing their knowledge, and then approves of their "correct" answers. Then he just relays the info to Jason as if he knew it all along.
There's also a deleted scene where they show him smoking weed before going to space which explains why he looks and sounds completely out of it. The man was high the whole time and was just having the time of this life.

Galaxy quest is probably one of the few movies that I rewatch ever years or so, it never gets old for me
The fact that Sam Rockwell was in this the same year as The Green Mile is amazing. Having seen both at the time of release, it really demonstrated the guys incredible range. Incredible actor. (and hilarious knowing that despite all of Guy's fears about dying, he was the only one that wasn't shot and killed by Saris at the end.)
Also Tony Shalhoub's character is so chill because originally this was meant to be R rated. And his character was a stoner. He wasn't bothered by anything because he was high as fuck.
And yeah, this isn't a parody. It's a love-letter.
Now that I think about it, the TV show "Other Space" is probably referencing this movie, since it also has a Chief Engineer character who acts high all the time (played by the original guy from MST-3K). Worth seeing if you haven't already, though be warned it's pretty low budget.

Shaloub's performance is really funny anyway. He's so laid-back, he's like the anti-Scotty.
In at least one scene Shalhoub's character is carrying around a paper bag which supposedly has his stash in it.

Sam Rockwell's scream ("It is a valid reaction!") just after they arrive on the ship was ad-libbed. Watch Sigourney Weaver - she wasn't expecting it and gave a very realistic jump as a result.
Fred's constant snacking would seem to explain his lack of urgency - he's pretty much baked for the first half of the movie.
The guy that plays “guy” is Sam Rockwell who went on to win a Tony, Academy award, and numerous other acting accolades for his performances. You need to watch Charlie’s Angels. He’s in that too.
"Oh they have those at the gynecologist, you'll be fine" and this is why you're one of my favorite reactors.
"Don't worry, they have those at the gynocologist" isn't as soothing a phrase as you seem to think it is.

The set pieces on the original Galaxy Quest TV Show were just gyno tools cause they probably couldn't afford making alien tools.
I'm so glad you loved it. I played a stage hand at the Con. those scenes took a week to film. Galaxy Quest is a sweetheart gem With the joke being how it started off mirroring the original Start Trek TV show, and conventions with over enthusiastic fans and and SNL sketch with Willaim Shatner cracking at the the podium and yelling at fans that it weass only a tv show, and there was no ship. Other than its a completely original story and people love it.👍😀🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
It occurred to me when I first saw this movie that, after Rickman's character said that line to the dying Thermian, he would never be able to say it again in such a flippant way as he did at the mall opening. It would have too much meaning for him.
I was a grown man when I first saw this movie, and my allergies kicked in during that scene. Watery eyes are such a pain. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Also, after seeing it, I told my sister, "so, Fred was smoking pot when he wasn't on screen, huh?" She didn't catch it, but I picked up on all the clues, especially his constant munchies. I believe it has been confirmed that Shalhoub was playing the character that way.
One last thing, Ashleigh. You didn't have the edited version. Weaver's F-Bomb was overdubbed so they could get the rating they wanted. This is exactly the way it was shown in theaters.

Yeah, was a grown man, didn't know what to expect, was suspicious, not a Trekker, BUT...
Surprised, it was REALLY funny, NOT cheap, there were some EMOTIONALS moments (I'm triggered at all: "We lied", "You shall be revenged", etc.). The quality of the CGI was quite good. A family movie without being dumb. And adult level comedy with empathy.
Maybe one of my top 3 comedy movies.
@DanEcho67 Ohhh, I did not know that about Sigourney Weaver's super obvious F-bomb. I watched this movie online years after it came out and wondered how I got a censored copy.
If you see the bonus extras on the DVD you can see a few deleted scenes that made it more clear Tony Schalub's character was supposed to be high. They had to cut the scenes to hit PG-13. You never see him actually smoke in the deleted scenes but there's more implications that he does.
Sigourney jumping when Sam Rockwell screams after being transported was a genuine reaction - she didn't know he was going to do it.
I just commented this as well. It makes the scene way funnier knowing that lol
Gwen’s “well screw that” while her lips clearly say something else is actually the theatrical and DVD release version. I suspect they only shot it with her swearing and had no alternate shots to use when trying to avoid a PG-13 rating, so they just dubbed the “fuck” out of it.
In my head, I imagine that since no one on the TV show would have been allowed to swear, the Thermians built some kind of technology into the ship that actively prevents people from doing so… either way, the juxtaposition of lips and words is very funny.
I belonged to a Star Trek club that was aligned with a bunch of other sci fi clubs when this movie came out. Our president worked for the cinema chain and would get us an early showing of all the sci fi movies that were coming out and they'd sell tickets with the proceeds going to charity. When this movie came out, we were all told to come dressed for a Con if possible (it was at 7pm after work on a Friday night).
Well we had Klingons and Dr Whovians, Red Dwarf fans, Storm Troopers, Red shirts you name it plus those of us in normal clothes (because I didn't have time to go home and change) and when the opening credits rolled to show the convention audience, we just lost it. Was one of the best nights ever... plus we did get to hear Sigourney say the F word!
I always assumed that they dubbed that in as a meta reference to the structures of network television. I believe, though this may not have been the case when the movie was released, that a PG-13 movie gets a 1 f-bomb budget.

There is a deleted scene where Gwen unzips her uniform to distract a couple of enemy alien guards. With that being cut there is no explanation for why she is suddenly unzipped.

I love Gene Roddenberry telling 'trekkers' "I invented you and you're _trekkies."_
Fun fact: on the DVD, one of the language tracks is Thermian, the alien language. It sounds just like in the film, and yes, it's for the whole movie. Also, Sarris has some amazing creature features. I love how his antenna move around, and his "plumage" flares out when he gets angry.
Another fun fact is that it has multiple aspect ratios. It starts with 4:3, old TV ratio for the old TV show scene. Then it moves to 1.85:1 (about 16:9) for the stuff while Tim Allen thinks he's on Earth. Then, once he realizes the truth when the pod bay doors open, it goes to 2.35:1 (about 21:9), a standard for action films and scifi.
This is considered an official Star Trek movie by many fans, even though it’s not Star Trek, because of how amazing it is. It pays so much respect to the original series while also creating its own mythos. So great. 10/10!

As a 43-year old man that grew up watching "Alien", I can confirm that Sigourney Weaver is an amazing actress, and is ALWAYS incredibly beautiful. SHe was then, is now, and will be when she's 187. Fact.
When this movie came out I was part of a Star Trek community and I was one of those hopeless nerds who knew every detail from the technical manuals. And actually we had discussions like "does it make sense, that this system is connect with this?" It was a great time and when this movie came to the theatres we all instantly loved it. It suddenly felt like we where part of a much bigger community. I don't think that there is any TV show today that gets nearly as much love from it's fans as Star Trek did.
For my part, I say that as long as Star Trek lovers exist in this world, there is hope that we can make it through another century. Mr. Roddenberry, it seems, was more influential than he knew. 😊

I still can't get over that the experience was so terrible that David Fincher nearly quit making movies over it. What a loss that would have been.

OH MY GOSH, YOU KNOW WHAT "MONK" IS. It's my favourite show ever and I'm so excited you recognized him. This movie means SO much to me, and not just because Alan Rickman's in it. I love showing it to people because they're always floored by it. I had a friend who literally cried of laughter when the spaceship hit the space station. When I went to my first convention and was in line to meet someone, I looked around and went- "Oh my gosh. I'm in 'Galaxy Quest'." It nailed fan culture in such a wonderful way.
Before Monk he was on a very successful sitcom called Wings.
Tony Shalhoub played Antionio Scarpatchi (scar patch) a loser cab driver on Wings. He was only supposed to be in one episode but he nailed it and became a regular.
Honestly, "Monk" is the best TV show ever made, so far. (In my opinion.)
He was also on Men in Black, the alien whose head grew back after getting shot off by J.
I remember watching this movie with my late mom a few years ago. She was a huge Star Trek fan and got me into it too. We had a blast watching this movie. Everything about it was great, from the cast to the comedy and the story, and is honestly one of the best Star Trek films that isn't Star Trek! Instantly became one of our all time favorite films!
Much like The Orville is the best current Star Trek series. The people behind it appear to know and love Trek far more than the people making the current official Trek series (except for Lower Decks, which is clearly made by fans and is great fun).

A friend of mine won tickets to the opening of this film. I came along as the "plus one." We expected it to be pretty lame, based on the promos we'd seen. Totally caught off guard when it turned out to be such a funny, well-written, original concept. When it airs as a rerun, I almost always watch it start to finish.
Tony Shaloub was great as Monk, loved that show. He was also the alien pawn shop guy in Men In Black, another great alien sci-fi comedy.

My first memory of Tony was in a movie called "Quick Change" with Bill Murray, Geena Davis and Randy Quaid. He almost stole the entire movie with his supporting role in a movie full of comedic performers.
His most emotional acting roll (IMHO) was playing Agent Frank Haddad opposite Denzel Washington in "The Siege" (1998).
Monk was his baby from start to finish. He developed that character from the ground up and played it perfectly.

The reason I kinda hate Monk is because I love seeing Tony play a completely different character in every movie he's in, and playing the same character on a TV show week after week sucked up the time he could have been doing that.
This movie is to Star Trek and its fandom what Spinal Tap is to metal rock and its fans. It's a loving, humorous look at a subculture. It's like family members poking gentle fun at each other, and it hits all the notes perfectly, which is why it's so beloved. An absolutely wonderful movie that will never become old or tiresome.
Holy cow this film rules. There's an excellent documentary about it you should try, it's VERY clear that everyone involved are still hugely proud of it, and they're right to be.
Look at that CAST! Look at the SCRIPT! Look at the STORY! Look at the JOKES! Look at the EFFECTS! Look at the love it has for the subject AND the fans!
Easily a top 3 Star Trek movie, and as a great man once said, it's a perfect movie. (David Mamet).
I love when the soldier hits and slides across the windshield, they look like humanoid insects and it’s like when you driving along and suddenly splat you hit a big grasshopper or dragonfly and it leaves a big smear on the windshield.
Alan Rickman did sadly pass away about 6 years ago, a week after David Bowie. They died at the same age from the same illness
Them both dying was a gut punch, I was in mourning like I lost my own family. I wish she’d watch Dogma so she could see Alan in that as well, I love that movie. Might be hard for her to get a copy though, I don’t ever lend out my copy.

Actually, they did NOT die of the same illness, Alan Rickman died of pancreatic cancer and David Bowie died of liver cancer. They're two different organs, serving similar purposes though. And actually Bowie died January 10th 2016 whereas Alan died January 14th, 2016, both at 69 years old. 2016 is also the year Prince died, and a very heavy handful of other very influential people and ones I'd idolized in my life. Everyone whining about 2020-now and I still say 2016 was worse lol.

Yes, this is a good representation of what a comicon is like... crowds of fans in cosplay to show their appreciation for their favorite characters, going to panels to hear their favorite stars speak and answer questions, roaming the dealer room to nab nifty bits and bobs of fan-love stuff, lining up to pay ridiculous amounts of money to get a favorite actor's autograph and/or picture, and just basically having a really good time!! --- You definitely need to go to one and cosplay while you are at it.
It's an experience for sure. And it's exactly what you said during the film... why make fun of someone who just likes what they like. A con is people of all sorts from all over who come together over a shared like of a thing, and it's crazy, weird, and wonderful.
@@mycroft16 my grandmother took me to my first Star Trek convention in the 90's Gates McFadden and Jonathan Franks were on the panel.
I've been to around ten of them, enjoyed every one thoroughly. There is something for everyone at these.

I feel like the relationship _Galaxy Quest_ has with _Star Trek_ is similar to the relationship the Marvel Cinematic Universe has with the comics: you don’t need to “do the homework” to have a great time… but if you do, there are a lot of Easter eggs and references that make it all the more enjoyable.
That's actually a very good take, I never thought about it like that. But yeah, when you think of it that's true of any movie adaptation of different source material, if it's well done you'll recognise stuff from the original material they couldn't really dedicate any significant time to in the various details. :)
The script went boldly where no script has gone before, so I think it was meant to be mostly a big homage with alot of funny parts.
This movie is really a tribute to Star Trek. So it's okay to see it when you haven't seen any Trek, but it's maybe not as layered for you as it is for someone who grew up with Trek. I'm so glad you loved it!

You don't NEED to watch Star Trek, but it definitely gives you an extra appreciation for this movie. It is full of references and parodies.

There is nothing in this that is not perfect. From the big to the little. Their ship ID starts with NTE, for Not The Enterprise. Fred is stoned the whole way thru, which is why he is mellow and munching. He didn't come up with the endothermic solar sailing, his techs did. Sigourney's open uniform bit came from a deleted scene between the chompers and the button, wherein she started a seduction of the aliens that had caught up to them. Oh, and we ALL got the edited version of her reaction. They dubbed in "screw" after the screeners objected to the obvious choice.

This movie also came out at the end of a time where being nerdy/geeky and into science fiction or science fiction universes (the biggest of which from conventions and the like was star trek) was decidedly outside the main stream, just before the culture changed and it became much more mainstream (partially through Marvel movies, partially through other cultural changes like the internet showing lots of communities and interests and what not).
I miss the time when nerd culture was a special group. It was untouched by the wanna be's and the outsiders who took advantage of the fans. Then they pushed the true fans aside to produce schlock, destroy franchises, and call anyone for exposing the spiritless and less than intelligent excrement a bunch of toxic fans.
I think too that we had reached a time when everyday tech had become so complex that the nerd became a valuable member of society. Everybody wanted know a nerd (at least a tech nerd) to fix their stuff the way people like to know a good plumber or mechanic.

I'd say it's more of a homage than a parody. It certainly has more of the Star Trek spirit, feel, and message than some of the newer Star Trek series and films.
Like, there's a fair amount of skewering, but unlike so many other shows/movies to me it feels like Galaxy Quest is genuinely poking fun out of love instead of mockery.
My head cannon about Sigourney's character's character: Real language comprehension is incredibly complicated for computers. Rather then risking potential problems, the NSEA assigned an extremely limited number of people to be trained and authorized to give verbal commands to the ship's computer, and programmed the computer to ignore anyone else talking. Repeating back the computer is part of protocol for the same reason as repeating back orders in the Navy, sacrificing effeciency to reduce potential catastrophic errors.

I'd say it's a little bit of a parody, but really more of an homage. I was never a huge Trek fan, I respect it, but I love Galaxy Quest.
you make it sound like a parody is insulting the work instead of being a comedic homage to the work which is what they are... in most cases. Like people love scary movies but scary movie is paying homage to as well as making fun of horror movie cliches
@@magus104 yeah, you're not wrong, I guess I was trying to differentiate between the more absurd parody, like Scary Movie, Airplane, Naked Gun, Hot Shots, Space Balls, and the like and how this one doesn't break the consistency of the movie for goofy asides that are winking at the audience.
Parody is probably a more encompassing term than I was thinking, can you think of a better characterization for the type of over the top parody that I'm talking about?
@@JoshuaKirtley I think this movie is hard to place with other parodies because it is such a perfect movie in it's own right that it transcends the parody genre. It is a parody movie but it is the best parody movie ever made. It works as it's own movie without needing much knowledge of what it is parodying. It's an incredibly funny comedy that has really dramatic and heart wrenching scenes. Most importantly it is never really mean spirited in it's comedy so it becomes a feel good movie in the end. I don't know if there is a perfect movie or not but this one would come close.
I absolutely love the obvious dubbing of Sigourney Weaver's yelling of "fuck that" to "screw that" .

I loved Zaheed in ME2. One of my favorite squadmates and I was blown away when I realized he played Sarris. He was also in Jurassic Park 2. I think he was dad of girl attacked by compies

Actually, it's both. Which makes it even more brilliant.
It is a parody, but the best parodies come from a place of love. Being able to laugh at yourself and see the inherent silly-ness (and beauty) in your cultural touchstones is one of the keys to an enjoyable life.

It was a star trek parody, but it was also a behind the scenes parody. Leonard Nimoy genuinely hated the character of Spock, then grew to appreciate what he meant to fans and even himself deep down. William Shatner had a gigantic ego, just like Tim Allen's character, thinking of himself as the star of the show at the expense of his castmates. Galaxy Quest was an all around clever and funny movie.
Fun fact: Monk's character was supposed to be high the entire time, but they cut the scene of him getting high so now he just seems really unbothered for no reason lol

No - not for no reason. If you look carefully, every scene in which the rest the rest of the cast were shown that all the stuff that was happening was real, Fred arrived late or missed it until after/during the digitizer scene. Until then, I think Tech Sgt. Chen considered it all a very elaborate high production value set. The reason he fainted with Liari is because that was the first time he realized she was an actual alien.
@@Cyclone001c That checks out. I still thought that they were doing a "if you know, you know" with Chen being stoned without showing it. I've heard there is a deleted scene of him getting high sometime before getting taken to outer space but it was cut to get a lower rating which makes sense why he's late/not getting it until the alien reveal.

I love that they were able to poke a little fun at the fans but still treat them with respect. None of these shows would be around if it weren't for the fans who enjoy watching.
Back in 1974 there was a parody of Flash Gorgon called Flesh Gordon (would be considered R rated now-a-days). There was a line in it where they got off the space ship and the scientist took a big sniff and exclaimed "Good! There oxygen on this planet".
This movie is so good. They perfectly balance parody and homage to sci fi series.
Since you brought it up, you do need to watch "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan" at some point (if none of the others). Even if you know nothing about the franchise, taken on its own, it's one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made. 😎

Absolutely. Not only was there a 3D tour of the entire Enterprise available for purchase in the 90’s, but it looked better too. By the end of the 90’s into the first couple of years after, we were seeing games like UnReal, Half-Life, Deus-Ex, and the MMORPG, EverQuest.
Speaking of EverQuest: did you know that the original reason for the “targeted auto-attack/skill-rotation” combat paradigm that pervaded MMORPGs for over a decade was because EQ popularized it as a way to deal with the extremely low data rates provided by dial-up internet? FPS gameplay was effectively impossible in the early years of MMOs due to high pings across the board when servers operated at that scale. There were still multiplayer FPS games like Starship: Tribes that could support up to 64 players in a match, though.
It wasn't just the latency and ping times of internet connections it was also the processing power of the servers themselves that couldn't handle a lot of concurrency.
Also, may I point out that the difference in graphics capability between 1990 and 1999 was so extreme that I wouldn't know how to describe it. The difference between a 2012 game and a 2022 game is less than what that decade saw from year to year...

For me, Sam Rockwell (who played Guy) stole every scene he was in. Absolutely hilarious. In 2018 he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
So hard to believe that Guy and Wild Bill from The Green Mile are the same...guy. Great actor!

This movie is so underrated. It's the Shawshank of comedy features. The Alan Rickman payoff scene, one of my favorites of any movie. And the physical comedy is top notch.

Enrico Colantoni who played the lead alien, invented the way they talk. He did it for his audition, and the producers were blown away, hired him, and made him teach everybody how to do it.
Not just talk, I think he also invented the walk as well.
My aunt showed me this movie specifically for Alan Rickman who had just been cast for the first Harry Potter movie. I loved it, even though back then I myself had never seen Star Trek. Now that I am older, I can get the little nods to everything from Star Trek. 🙂
Also you should ABSOLUTELY find yourself a Comic con! Look for your local cons and see what celebs may be in attendance bc a lot of times it will have at least one person you would LOVE to meet! I myself got to meet Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) in 2019. He did the Freddy laugh and had the glove. And he even showed me how to pose for the photo op so both our gloves were showing but we are basically hugging and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience 🥰 You will also just love all the fans costumes and try not to go broke in the dealers room buying merch! 😅 glad you loved this movie! It is one of my favs!

Comic con or an anime con. Both are great and you can cosplay anything at them. Always keep your food budget separate from your merch budget.

A Parody is a joke version of an existing IP.
While this IS a comedy its not actually a recreation of any existing IP.
Its really just a comedy based on the entire SciFi genre.
This movie was so underrated when it first came out, glad to see it gets so much love these days.

Galaxy Quest, one of the very best Star Trek films ever made and/or as George Takei describes it “A chillingly realistic documentary.” Major shout-out to Alan Rickman’s superb performance in this film in general, and especially the scene where he sincerely utters the “By Grabthar's hammer” line.
