    Galaxy Quest is amazing because you don't need to know anything about Star Trek, and it's still a great film, full of heart. If you know Star Trek lore, you recognize a lot of situations, but it's not a parody, neither it mocks Star Trek. It's a love letter to it. There's not a single drop of mean-spirited content in the whole film. It doesn't even show the fans under a bad light, and most "parodies" love the "hurr durr nerds" approach. And Alan Rickman is a treasure.

So many comedies back then had to have a stoner character or at least a scene where somebody got high. This movie still feels surprisingly fresh (excluding some special effects, though even that holds up pretty well overall) but making his character just be high would have dated it a bit. It's personally way funnier to me that this is just the character's personality. It gave me the impression that he never quite fit in with his fellow humans, and meeting and interacting with these aliens was way more natural for him.

    The main reference to the original Star Trek is that all of the actors were so typecast after the show, that most of them had to just get by, hence the conventions. William Shatner came out ok. Leonard Nimoy somewhat (but also typecast). While there were other things like Tim Allen losing his shirt, and the one expendable guy, they point it out in the script, so it's not really an inside joke.

    • @Serai3
      @Serai3 3 месяца назад +1

      Shatner had a good career going until ST was canceled, and then he wound up severely typecast for nearly a decade. He did an occasional crappy low-budget movie but mostly he was living in his car, traveling around doing dinner theater to support his family back home. He didn't do well again until the late 70's and his series "T.J. Hooker". All of this explains his attitude of getting all the gusto possible out of life, because you never know when it'll all be taken away.

    Your reaction was so good that I'm watching it a second time, so here's another fun fact for you: Tony Shalhoub has confirmed Fred is indeed stoned throughout the story. The director hired him because the character was thinly written, and Shalhoub is a master of making something out of nothing. He showed up on the set clutching a greasy paper bag, saying, "I think my character is in this bag." The bag was full of snacks, of course - Fred has a raging case of the munchies throughout. (That moment when they're walking the halls arguing, and Fred's in the back murmuring "Wow, the floors are so clean!" - pure stoner.) Another way he played with the character is on the issue of his identity. Fred Kwan plays Chen, an Asian character, even though he's clearly not Asian. (This is made painfully clear in the old TV episode at the beginning.) He even admits that "Kwan" is not his real name. But he's become so wedded to the character that when the Thermians first see him and whisper in awe, "Tech Sergeant Chen!", he responds unconsciously by _narrowing his eyes._ Seriously, go back and look. It's one of the best character beats in the film, but it's so subtle that most people miss it.

    It was great to show this movie to my mom who is a Trekkie (OG series). She absolutely loved this movie, and I personally love the fact they cast Sigourney Weaver in this. She has said many times it was one of her favorite roles she has done. What I think that made this movie work so well is the fact it would fit right in as a Star Trek episode. And they made it to where the fans where key to helping them complete their mission.
    It bombed when it first came out, but now some many people love this movie. There was talks of a sequel but after Rickman pass they decided it would not work without him.

    The only direct inference to Star Trek is hidden. The Letters on the side of the ship Protector are NTE. It's short for Not The Enterprise, which, of course is Star Trek's flagship.

    "He doesn't understand!" has been a little soundbite that pops into my head every now and then but I could never remember where it came from, until today. Thanks, guys!

    I remember the first time I watched this movie. Justin Long's character is explaining what's happening to his parents, and my mom just turned to me and went, "That's you."

    This is funny, silly, hilarious and - when a devastated Mathesar says "But whyyy" - it also becomes heart shattering!

      They're both in a movie called Snow Cake, which is fantastic and worth watching. Look it up, Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman are fantastic together
