Thumbs down for throwing the word "haters" around like candy ... which just showcases that you FAILED TO RECOGNISE THE VALID CRITICISM of Jason at the start ... because he did act like a jerk AND nobody from his "friends" liked him!

Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar) thought of the signature way the Thermians speak and move when he auditioned for the movie (he actually based the speech pattern on a vocal exercise that stage actors often do to warm up their voices before performing). The filmmakers loved his audition so much that they hired him for the role of Mathesar and put him in charge of teaching the actors how to act like a Thermian.

My father is a fan of the old 60's Star Trek and introduced me to it when I was a small child. Then we watched The Next Generation and the rest of the 90's Star Trek together. We saw this in a theater together and it was simply a great experience. From the non-referential comedy to the sci-fi and nerd in-jokes, even the 3 aspect ratio changes during the film, it was all so well crafted and with so much heart. One of my favorite movies and theater experiences.

I saw this with my biggest nerd friend (and he could say the same about me). We’re old enough to have seen OST in the mid 70s when it first went into syndication. We never got into STNG however. By the time it came out we had caught the D&D bug and/or were nerding out on different things.
A bit of fun trivia: erotic fan fic got started with the OST fandom. It was called Kirk/Spock fiction. If you’ve heard the term “slash fic”, it comes from the “/“ between Kirk and Spock. Once you’ve heard the concept, you can’t watch the original series the same way. The lovers’ triangle between Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy becomes clear. McCoy is the older lover, discarded for the younger, hotter Spock.

    Yes, Fred was stoned. 😆
Fun Fact: Rockwell's scream was unscripted. If you watch the scene again, Sigourney's startled jump was genuine.
... You are correct, this is less a parody than a love letter to fandom.
One thing I noticed was that the reboot appeared 18 years after the first show. That is the same time gap between Star Trek original series and The Next Generation.
Oh, if you look closely at Sigourney's lips at the start of the chomper scene, "Screw this!" was _not_ what she said. 😏

"She went from Ripley to this." Sigourney was actually excited to play against type and be the bimbo in this movie. It was brilliant casting.
"Young Laredo" was a Wesley Crusher gag. Basically the "boy wonder" trope.
"Why are you so casual?" In the original version, before they edited it to get a PG rating, Fred was supposed to be a stoner. That's why he also always has a bag of munchies.
"I would have taken my 'cap' off." As much as he complains about being typecast in his role, he never takes that prosthetic off... even when he's at home.

@@DeRockMedia is it the doc that mentions that Galaxy Quest was originally rated R? I don't remember where I heard that rumor from, but looking back at the film it does seem like it's true. There's a scene where Weaver's character says "forget that!", but her mouth CLEARLY says the words "F*CK THAT!", so it was dubbed over in post. Also Casey mentions Weaver's bewbs being out randomly, and I heard there was a sexaully suggestive scene that was deleted because it would ruin the PG rating, so it was cut out the film. Hence why her bewbs are out the rest of the film with no explanation lol

Watched Hawk the Slayer every time it was on TV (usually a weekend afternoon when they had nothing else to broadcast). Saw all the Star Wars and Star Trek movies in the theater first run. They never dissed the fans in this movie, they slightly dissed the writing of Star Trek and other shows by pointing out how some tropes were just bad, but even then they acknowledge that the shows had a cultural impact for the fans.
The scene with Tim Allen getting upset, is a parody of a Will Shatner bit on Saturday Night Live "Get a Life" . The thing is that fandom is about life balance.

Speaking as a '60s nerd, _Star Trek_ was first aired in 1966. And before that there were (gasp!) books. Heinlein. Asimov. Clarke. Bradbury. H. G. Wells. _The Moon is a Harsh Mistresss. The Gods Themselves. 2001, A Space Odyssey. Rendezvous With Rama. Fahrenheit 451. The Time Machine._
And nerd-dom isn't just about fiction; I'm a math nerd. My brother is now an electrical engineer, but back in the '60s he was collecting vacuum tubes in hopes of making his own computer someday. (And so he has, though transistors became readily available before he got around to it - I still have some of those old vacuum tubes in my basement.) He was also grinding his own mirror to make a telescope.
There were also things happening in real life that were *better* than science fiction. When I was 4 going on 5 my father took me out in the back yard late one night to show me the stars, including one strange star that was actually moving, while all the others seemed to be standing still. My father showed me Sputnik, because he wanted me to be able to tell my children and grandchildren that I was there at the beginning of the space age. I watched Alan Shepard go up, and come down safely. And John Glenn. I sat on the carpet in front of the television in our living room, all of the room lights off, only the Christmas tree lights on, and the television, and listened to Borman, Lovell, and Anders read from Genesis about "the Good Earth," as they passed over the barren landscape of the moon - that was Apollo 8, Christmas Eve, 1968. The next year we watched Apollo 11 land on the moon.

Also (and this is much more obscure... to the point that it might not be true) he might be playing as a white guy who's pretending to be Asian. Scotty was famously played by a Canadian actor with an over the top fake Scottish accent, and Tony Shaloub's character in this movie has an Asian name and tends to squint whenever he introduces himself. The rumor is he was asked to do a fake Asian accent but he thought it would be too offensive and people wouldn't get the joke so they figured they squinting would be enough.

Star Trek TNG, the spin offs and any other good scifi show I could find were a passion for me growing up. And what I wish show creators and actors on these shows would know is that these shows were inspirational to many of us and help develop a passion for being curious. I went into the sciences professionally, physics to be exact, and have had many nerdy talks with colleagues over the decades about scifi shows and star trek. You might be surprised how many scientist have tattoos that are scifi themed. 60's nerds had all the media of the 60's and prior. Planet of the Apes, Fantastic Voyage, 2001: a space odyssey, James Bond, The Man From Uncle, Dangerman, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, Lost in Space, Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Dr Who, Quatermass, Stingray, Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds, The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, War of the Worlds, When Worlds Collide, all the Universal Monster movies, It Came From Outer Space, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Ray Harryhausen, and on and on and on - and actual books, and comics, and radio... Also real space was constantly in the news, the cold war was on, and the coolest muscle cars ever

I would have loved to see this movie as it was originally intended. Still a great movie.

I love the question about the kid. That's probably a nod to Westley Crusher on Star Trek The Next Generation, a child prodigy that eventually had a role on the crew.

My dream shows for revival are: "Pushing Daisies" and "Firefly."
