This scene is from the 1956 movie, Rock Around the Clock. Bill Haley and the Comets are primarily famous for two songs - Rock Around the Clock and See You Later, Alligator.
Yes Jay, 'cutting a rug' is a thing, LOL I used to play in a Blues/R&B band, and we used to love it when the swing dancers showed up. Made the gig awesome!!
Benny Goodman Sing, Sing, Sing wld get my vote, for earlier swing. I think Amber needs to get Jay some dance classes! He's always so into this stuff. Love it!
Agree with the Joe Turner comment. That is exactly what I was saying in my post. People may cover a song different even better but we have to understand our musical roots. And in America that usually leads us to the Delta.
Just one more thing. When you listen to CCR you think that music came from some old man in the Delta but as you learned Foggerty turned his california upbringing into great American old folk music that was almost all original. Thats why they are the greatest American rock n roll band. That and they helped stop a war with music.
So happy to hear a song and see a video that is FINALLY before my time too! Allows me to know how Jay & Amber feel with all of the old songs they watch.
Cut a rug is a term that's been around since at least the 1930s. Mainly associated with the jitterbug. It's used as a way of saying someone can *really* dance but originally it was also literally referring to marks that lindy hoppers / jitterbuggers would leave beneath their feet once they got dancing. I go through phases of watching lindy hop competitions on RUclips; there are still great dancers around. It's fascinating to watch -so fluid. Wish I could do it!
everyday common teens and early twenties could dance like that, I remember my parents who were teens in the 40's and jitter bug was popular, could dance like those two at the ballrooms where swing dancing was popular. I really liked the diso dance era where knowing the steps was important, and so much fun.
Yes, there are places where people still dance like this! Here in Portland, Oregon, where I live, there are a few places for dancing like this, and several local bands which specialize in music like this. It isn't dead. Amber and Jay in Oklahoma City could probably find something where they live!
Yes, someone is doing this music and dance today. You MUST watch The Brian Setzer Orchestra - Jump Jive An' Wail. HORNS, JIVE DANCING, GREAT MUSIC, great video.
I had the joy of seeing Bill Haley twice, once in a stadium with others of the era and once in a small dance club, very similar to this scene, and yes we jived. Such good memories. ✌️
Yes, I heard of "cutting the rug" expression before. It means dancing until you wear out a spot on the rug! I grew up in the disco era and dancing was fun. Nowadays it seems to be sexual foreplay! React to "See You Later Alligator " from Bill Haley next. Thanks. 😎
I love this! There was a swing dance/jive revival in the 90’s that was so much fun. I had a good upper hand since I learned how to swing dance from my grandparents. I wish we could have another fun revival again.
Yes! We should see more reactions to the 90s swing revival. My personal favorite is the Squirrel Nut Zippers and their song Hell, but there are many to choose from.
The female dancer was Lisa Gaye. She was a professional dancer and actor who was in a lot of the 50s Rock and Roll movies. Her dancing was so distinct. She was so pleasing to watch.
I’m old enough to know, this video was from an old Allen Freed movie. Allen Freed was a disk jockey who played black rhythm and blues songs late at night, and called himself, “Moon Dog”. He also coined the term “rock and roll”. He got so big he made Rock & Roll movies with all the latest acts. They were corny movies, but the important thing was he got this great music on film.
My dad lived in Brigantine, NJ and used to have lunch with members of the Comets that lived nearby in Ocean City. One of my dad's favorite bands, along with the Four Seasons.
I had the pleasure of meeting guitarist Franny Beecher and piano player Johnny Grande several times. Great guys, both. Al Rex (bass) was still giving interviews into his 90s just a few years back.
It was music like this that you can say. Wow, you can say why they made so many babies during this time. Listen to that I get tired about talking about it it's yeah yep
I think this is from the film DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (1956). Bill and the Comets were in a couple movies. My parents were semi-pro dancers, and got into swing because of movies like this. I inherited two left feet.
You guys reacted to Stephen Bishop about 7 months ago but if you are looking for another great song it was the theme song for the movie Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman The song is titled " It Might be you"
The couple who hit the dance floor were Lisa Gaye and Earl Barton. Gaye was Debra Padget"s sister. Earl Barton was also the choreographer for this movie.
My sister (now deceased) & oldest brother were born in the 40's. The went to the Hop in Illinois & used to do the Shag. They went to the sock Hops & dance roller skate. They knew how to do their stop.
Um J,Cut a Rug is slang for dancing in an energetic way,it dates back to the 20’s and 30’s when couples would dance the jitterbug. When the dance was performed in one area continuously the carpet would appear as though it was cut or gashed.
How about reacting to some more Little Richard? You could check out his songs, The Girl Can't Help It (from the movie), Tutti Frutti, Rip It Up and All Around the World.
I like what you guys are doing you’re getting into the swing of things with a lot more reactions . Check out Glen Miller chatanoga Cho cho with the nickcalous brothers awesome
Dazzle Dazzle was 1955. You cannot go to your ever after without hearing/seeing Bill & The Comets ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK. It was the teen anthem and opening song for the movie Blackboard Jungle. In 1955 When the song came on in the theater, all the teens got up and started to dance and the manager turned on the lights and stopped the film and warned us all to sit back down or else…. That is how powerful rock n roll music was for us in the 50’s. This happened in North Hollywood , California.
@@alansmith7626 Yes, and for the first season [1/2 year in early 1974] of Happy Days until that show had a song written for them to use called, uh, "Happy Days..."
Apology. I hit a “D” instead of “R”. Of course, I know it’s Razzle Dazzle. I have Bill Haley’s Greatest Hits on my MP3 player and still enjoy the memories each song evokes. Also, one of the dancers in the film shown was Nick Fotaine, a high school classmate. I just googled The Blackboard Jungle movie and it was banned in Memphis and Atlanta. Elsewhere the song was removed from showings. Didn’t stop Rock n Roll, did it?
"Cut a rug" as slang for dancing is ancient. I've heard it used in 1930s movies and I doubt it was new even then. I remember seeing/hearing Curly of the Three Stooges circa late '30s inviting someone to "cut yourself a slice of rug". It likely goes back at least to the jazz era of the '20s, if not before.

Real music! I was lucky enough to see the Comets in the late 80s, fantastic
"Cutting a rug" came before "Dancing a jig." Same thing. Have you done Down In Mexico by The Coasters? I'll guarantee that you'll love it.
Down In Mexico! What a great song! Quentin Tarantino thought so too.
Jay is so funny !😂 has he been under a rock? Cut a rug is old as DIRTT 😂😂
I hope you realise that this was the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll. I can still see my parents of the floor jiving in the 60/70’s. Times were good.
