  • UPDATE:
    I managed to get my hands on the 6K camera to conduct a real life test, find all the details in this link: • BlackMagic 6k Vs 4k IN...
    BlackMagic 6K: A comprehensive preview before you buy it
    BlackMagic dropped another bomb! They disrupted the market again and are now stepping on the RED Camera’s toes and all the other big players out there.
    As glamorous and exciting the camera’s specs might sound, I don’t believe this is for everyone.
    This is NOT AN UPGRADE. It’s a different version of what we already have. It is a bit of a set back in many areas compared to the 4K.
    Here, I’ll be digging deep into the details you need to know to make an informed decision to whether this camera is for you or not.

    I really appreciate how you went through all the features, frame sizes, and benefits of each camera and made some great comparisons. But it's not realistic to assume something marketed as a cinema camera would have DSLR features like a flip screen, IBIS, great battery life, and so forth. You are buying a professional tool that performs with one thing in mind, which is image quality in a controlled environment. If you bought any other professional cinema camera system you would most likely not even get a battery and monitor unless you buy those parts separately, and everything is manual. The reason people build out extensive kits for the BMPCC 4K & 6K is so that it suits their needs for what they need, but a lot of people think since it looks like a hybrid DSLR camera it should just have those features built-in.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +3

      I see your point, but keep in mind there isn't anymore any very sharp line between what is Pro and what is not. The form factor now is not an indication of that. This pretty much have the features of a PRO camera, yet it looks like a DSLR for photography. In the end of the day some of those features I'm talking about are things are already implemented in other pro cameras such as the URSA mini camera with The flip screen. Also for the BMPCC4k and 6k they already have a battery grip with Sony batteries. Which a single battery can easily fit in the compartment. So wasn't sure why with that rational they still didn't add it to the 6K? IBIS is a choice that seems to match that form factor as well like int he GH5 and Sony cameras... In the end of the day, those are wishes that I know they can implement. They have the tech and the means,... they already did it.

    For those still on the fence, the P4K ($1295) plus the MB Speedbooster ($650), is just about the same price as the P6K now on sale everywhere for $1995. I went with the 6K for the slightly sharper image, slightly better color, but mostly because I already have EF glass.

      Thanks to The DP Journey for these great videos! For Nikkor (Nikon) glass owners, it may still be better to own the P4K. I own a lot of Nikon Glass, many AIS lenses. The MFT version plus my existing speed boosters after many years in the GH1.GH2, GH4 video scene means going to EF mount is not as convenient for me! Ughhhh. I hate it when I see so few offerings for Nikon F mount, lol. But seriously, the Metabones SB and a screw attachment to hold it stable on MFT mount, as seen in the video from Tilta or SmallRig is more stable for Nikon glass than an EF mount + skinny F mount adapter, with no way to stabilize the minute shake you may get from pulling focus.

    Actually, DOF will effectively be the same as the 6K when using a speedbooster on the 4K with the same lens at the same focal length. Blackmagic in their comparison image didn’t take into consideration a speedbooster and was showing the same field of view with the same focal length on both cameras, but with the 4K having a smaller MFT sensor, you would have to back the camera out in order to get the same field of view as the 6K, thus reducing the shallow DOF effect on the 4K. Therefore when using the 4K with a speedbooster, you’ll be getting roughly the same FOV and DOF since the distances will be roughly the same from the subject as the crop will be very similar with the speedbooster on the 4K. Sensor size does not change how the physics of light interact with the lens and characteristics of DOF. It’s the focal length, distance from the subject and aperture that effects the DOF. Other than that, great video explaining the pros and cons of the 6K vs the 4K. 4K is still the best deal out of the two cameras in my opinion. A lot more bang for your buck, compared to the 6K.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +2

      I actually did that test and you'd be very surprised at my finding. I'm editing that test in my next video coming tomorrow. But yeah, the concept of bigger sensor = shallower depth of field is very widely miss-understood... calls for an episode just for that subject. happy to see knowledgeable viewers like you on the channel. Would love to hear from you again in my next episode.

    • @echelonredmedia6512
      @echelonredmedia6512 5 лет назад +1

      THE DP JOURNEY Yes, it can get a bit confusing so I can totally see why people can misunderstand the concept. It took me some time to really grasp it as well initially. I’m sure with Metabones XL on the 4K, you can probably get away with an even shallower DOF than the 6K with the same lens with similar framing of the subject. Sounds great. Can’t wait to check out your findings!

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +2

      @@echelonredmedia6512 for sure if you retain the same FOV, then since the 4K+MB will have a wider FOV, getting closer will result in a shallower DOF and the 6K. But in my test I kept the same exact distance, to be comparing apples to apples as much as possible, even with having a wider FOV on the 4K... retaining the same lens, but only adding the speed boosters.

    As always a great video! A few more points to consider in favor of 6k for VFX work
    7. If you're capturing wide shots for a chromakey shot, the increased color and spatial resolution can can help you get cleaner edges when keying
    8. Higher spatial resolution helps you get more usable features for 3D tracking and extracting geometry from moving shots (photogrammetry)
    9. Higher resolution images are more useful for VFX plates (clean backgrounds) and set extensions

    Well to point this out. RED's Gemini sensor is supposed to do 16.5 Stops vs BMPCC6K 13 Stops. That's a big difference. I prefer Dynamic range over resolution any day If I can.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +2

      yeah for sure, but when you consider that those extra 3.5 DR would cost you $23,000 would you still consider RED? In the end of the day, RED and BM have 2 different color sciences and workflow, just looking at the major difference in price would make me wonder why RED is costing that much if another company can produce pretty amazing results in a fraction of the cost.

    • @retroradfilms
      @retroradfilms 5 лет назад

      @@THEDPJOURNEY Why does Hollywood always shoot on Arri? They're very stable cameras. BM has had a lot of bad press for being unstable. I shoot BM myself and I see the issues it has. Honestly, I wish I could afford an Arri Mini. That's a very solid camera. I think also it comes down to engineering. Framerates are also important too. RED isn't trying to compete with BM it's trying to compete with Arri and Sony. BM does have one thing going for it in Hollywood. Due to the price and image, they make great crash cams. I say if you're working with a lower budget, shoot BM, but if you have a higher budget, shoot on something you want to shoot on. I think that they're cameras are more expensive because of the materials to make them and more features.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +3

      @@retroradfilms Actually Neither Arri or RED are as reliable as you think. Not sure how often you used them, I did quite a lot, I'll be shooting with the mini next week and I own a RED. IMHO, The main reason (beyond the amazing sensor quality) of why Hollywood is using Arri is the legacy they had since the film days. This company is literally 100 years old, very well established and reliable in that sense. Even RED is not grabbing that considerable market share from Hollywood. Which explains their move to go target the mainstream and the public with affordable cameras. BM is great... and I feel they might change that probably within the next 10 years if they're going with this pace

    Why 6K? 7. You can frame for center extracted 4K, avoid lens vignetting, and have room for reframing shots in post if needed. This is how many feature films are made, and why you shoot a framing chart. 8. When working in center extract 4K mode, you have additional information around the sides for camera tracking and stabilization. 9. Allows more options when you need to deliver 2.39, 1.78, 1.85 and 9:16 deliverables. The 1.78 version of a feature film has more picture information than what you saw in the 2.39 theatrical release (or less if the original was anamorphic).

I have the Nikon holy trinity of pro glass and I dreaded getting rid of it to buy Canon EF lenses. It just makes sense to wait for actual fullframe sensors to come out and use this glass on it later.

      Pierre, there are a few options for Nikon shooters. None with autofocus in Video, unfortunately. For manual focus there are many with a metabones Speed Booster and BM has a Nikon mount option for some of their bigger cameras. The more and more pro you want to be the more you need a positive locking mount to hold the lens rock solid for focus pulls, such as the Emount on the FS7 MK2 or the Metabones Canon EF Cine adapter (the posi-lock mounts are few and far between, apart from cine camera mounts). www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1361385-REG/blackmagic_design_cineursamuprotf_blackmagic_ursa_mini_pro.html

    I find it really disappointing that BlackMagic is making the 6K owners choose between shooting 6K in BRAW OR 4K in ProRes. I can't for the life of me understand why there's no option to shoot 4K or even 1080p in BRAW. It's got to be a pretty simple software switch, but I'd really like to know what the reason is.
    Still, I really like the directions that BlackMagic is taking the industry. If not for the BMPCC4K, RED wouldn't be teasing their "less ridiculously expensive" 6K camera. Kinefinity might not be a thing. And competition is only good for the consumer.
    Next on my wishlist for a PCC will be to split the PCC product into two versions. One with an articulating screen and IBIS and a larger battery. The other, with SDI out, 6K (or even 8K), 14 stops of dynamic range, real anamorphic modes, and better color scopes on board. And both of these levels of functionality should come in EITHER m43 or EF (or even better RF) lens mounts.
    This means that one version could be for gimbal using, vlogger and more on-the-run shooting, while the other is for more serious build-out cinematic film maker use. Hey, a boy can dream.

      What you cannot forget is the fact that Davinci Resolve comes free with the camera (otherwise 300 bucks) and as far as I know this program is capable of converting BRAW files into prores, so it might be an extra step but definitely possible. Also, who knows maybe the ability to record prores will come with a new firmware update

    • @goodeggproductions
      @goodeggproductions 5 лет назад

      @@ryushev2000 There currently is no codec that supports a 6K ProRes. Apple would have to create one. Which they may already be doing, and might be in a future firmware. The $300 full Resolve certainly isn't lost on me. It was the a wonderful extra for a camera I would have bought anyway (the 4K). And it's currently the ONLY option we have for working with BRAW. I'll assume that Premiere will eventually either support it or Media Encoder will accept it for transcode. But I'm trying to migrate 100% to Resolve anyway.

    • @ryushev2000

    • @goodeggproductions
      @goodeggproductions 5 лет назад

      @@ryushev2000 The only problem is the overhead of being restricted to using Resolve for any manipulation. For some, it's still a daunting proposition to switch editing suites, even if it's better. For example, I use Resolve for putting together short films, but I still use Premiere for doing multi-cam and green-screen shots, only because I'm more comfortable with it and haven't taken the time to learn to do it on Resolve. But now that 16 is full release, I'm planning to make that switch. What's really weird though is that for 4K and under, ProRes is the ONLY option. Why not allow us 4K BRAW on the 6k camera like we can do on the 4k camera?? It makes no sense.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +2

      @@goodeggproductions The reason why there's no 4K raw in that camera cuz the 4K is a downsample, while RAW would never be a downsample, since it's "raw". RAW is always a 1:1 pixel to pixel ratio. once you downsample, then it's processed... then to save it into a different format now. They can technically offer a 4K raw if they window the sensor, which they did in their 5.7K windowed version, but the 4K would be a steep crop that no one would use

    I guess they didn't make the second screw mount cause it would be obsolete anyway since this is not designed to be handheld, despite the fact that it looks like DSLR. To be honest I don't know what they went through designing the form. Maybe they just thought to sell these to vloggers as vloggers are a huge market these days. Even when these definitely aren't vlogging cameras. Also, the flipscreen - or screen at all for that matter - isn't something cinema cameras usually provide, so I've always kept the screen in these a huge bonus.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 года назад

  • @rizzo-films
    @rizzo-films 4 года назад +1

    This is great! But I'm still not convinced about the no-IBIS critique. Its advantage over mirrorless cameras is that it is a cinema camera at a tiny fraction of the price of a normal cinema camera (which also would not have IBIS), and its price is its advantage over bigger cinema cameras (which would have more DR, but still, would be at least 10k more). So, I would think that someone looking for a cinema camera would already be thinking of setting up a v-mount battery and a rig and not fretting over no IBIS. I'm guessing the interior of the camera body is packed with mechanisms that support the superior image processing and a larger body would need to be designed to facilitate 5 axis IBIS around the m43 or s35 sensors. Though TBH, that would be amazing. It would be a treat to just grab this camera and run with it and not take the time to set up the rig and v-mount battery! There are situations that call for this. But I'm pretty much expecting to have to deck it out.

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  4 года назад

      Yeah, well my point is that even cinema cameras now are starting to move to IBIS... there's no norm for not having IBIS in cine cams, it's not a sign of PRO level. It's a feature that a lot love and you can switch it off after all if you really don't want it. In other words, I would pay more to have it ;)

    Correction for 1899.00 you can get a Pocket 6k Gen 2.0 and for 1500 bucks you can get a Pocket 6k Gen 1.0 We have more options. The only buyers remorse I am having is the EF mount is being left out to pasture with these new 3rd party lens manufacturers. One shouldn't put a full frame sensor mount on a crop sensor camera. That dreaded 1.5x factor is a PITA. Being an electronics nerd I am pulling the trigger for the Magic Booster by Luc Adapter [look it up]. It's in Italy. I really hate crop [crap] factors. It's near impossible to get an f 1.2 wide angle lens to work the way it should. As far as I am concerned the EF mount is Blackmagics biggest mistake besides there not being an in body stabilization. It's a run and gun format body style, but in reality it's a studio tripod mount camera on the inside. If I could do this again, I would opt for the 4k and not the 6.

    The BMPCC 4K with Metabones XL is not a 1.36x crop factor. You don't subtract 2 - 0.64; you multiply it.
    So, the BMPCC 4K with the Speedbooster XL is 1.9 (the BMPCC 4K is slightly bigger than true MFT, with a 1.9x crop factor, not a 2x) * 0.64 = 1.216x crop factor, which is even closer to FF and considerable apart from the 1.56x crop factor of the BMPCC 6K.
    So, a 50mm on the 4K w/speedbooster would be a 60.8mm, and on the 6K would be a 75mm. That is quite the difference.
    For me, that is the main advantage of the BMPCC 4K, along with BRAW @ 4K DCI. Sure, BRAW @ 6K DCI is super nice, but even at 12:1, you start to get considerably larger files. Storing that can get complicated real fast.
    Nice video, man!

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад +2

      hey Israel, thanks for the comment, about the crop factors, I would urge you to do the calculation yourself mainly taking into account the actual sensor dimensions and measuring the Crop factor based on the diagonal length of the sensor. Check this article that can help you in how to calculate it: bit.ly/2YTcnVQ
      That's how i got my numbers basically, which is a standard way of calculating crop factors. Most people do the mistake of taking the width only and basing it on that, which doesn't make sense since the sensor is 2 dimensional.

    With horizontal sensor size which is usually what one is concerned about, BMPCC 6k is 1.56x crop factor to full frame, compared to 1.45x crop for true Super35 film. It's about 7.5% smaller than true super35. Not including anamorphic filming, with true super35 film, one usually displays in theaters at a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, which is shorter than the 16:9 ratio captured by the BMPCC 6K - so the top and bottom of the image on super35 film is usually cropped (and will be slightly cropped as well on the BMPCC 6K for presentation). In the case that you aren't filming in 4:3, you don't need to worry about the vertical size of the sensor.
    The most worrying aspects of the BMPCC 6K is that you are stuck with EF mount, considerably worse rolling shutter, considerably worse battery life, and the inability to shoot Prores 6K.
    The great thing is that it's been tested to have about 1 full stop more of dynamic range, better highlight rolloff, slightly warmer skin tones but overall cooler image, and 6K for stabilization compared to the BMPCC 4K.

As a fellow Gemini owner, I wouldn't go so far as to say I'd be moved to sell mine, but these cameras definitely do a great job. I still prefer the Gemini, as well as the RED raw workflow that can be used in all NLE's, which is a big advantage over BRAW so far--though I really like editing in DaVinci when I can. However, I still feel these cameras have a touch of the DSLR look as they lack the dynamic range of the more expensive cinema cameras. But, for the money, they really do shine, and look better than any of the competitors in or near that price range. Even compared to cameras twice or three times the price. I would be curious to see how well or not the BM6K camera footage matches up with the Gemini in post. It might be a good B-cam for gimbal shots and such. Make it more like the expensive cinema cameras by going with a square form factor by getting rid of the LCD screen and even the battery slot (batteries are crap, not even worth having them). You can make the camera smaller or maybe use that real estate for something else. Most people who buy this camera end up rigging it anyways with v-mount batteries and external monitors. Maybe if they do this, the camera could be cheaper, freeing up money for people to buy some of the externals for rigging.

    Quick question, if I shoot in 6K and edit in a 4K timeline in say FCPX, will the software automatically work with the extra resolution when I crop in or stabilize?
    Or do I need to be editing in a 6K timeline and export in 4K to get the benefit of the added resolution?

    As a pocket camera, the BMPCC needs urgently an ibis. Without it you really can’t make freehand footages. To film always with a big gimbal or tripod on travel tours is a hard and tiring job, so you too often prefer to leave the cam at home or in the hotel. I have the 6 K, but for run and gun it is the wrong camera.A good ibis would make this camera to a cinematic allrounder, so it is more for project filmmakings.

    Excellent video so maybe I should just wait till BlackMagic fixes these issues. I have a Very Tiny RUclips channel of 70+ subscribers I do videos on Car Audio and Video Electronic Add ins as well as Random Electronics unboxing and wanted something like this that can give me a cleaner image. I use my Samsung Galaxy note 9 in 4k @60fps and have a limit of 5 minutes per video before it stops. It does tend to get hot if I dont give it a few breaks here and there but even with the 4k recording feature, I did notice some image static or noise and the autofocus doesn't ways fix that somewhat of a blurry grainy look. But my videos on my car projects have been about an 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. I use Wondershare by Filmora to merge my videos together and make color changes but I do plan on eventually getting a better PC and a new better software in the side of the new Camera for Filming.

      Thank you so much for the comment. Honestly you dont need BM for you channel. A GH5 or a G9 even would be good enough. BM would be a bit of an overkill.. It's a high maintenance camera after all. And as much as it's cost is relatively low.. it needs a LOT of accessories and batteries to be practically usable on set.

    4:23 The crop of the BMPCC 4K sensor is not 2X (compared to "full frame"), it is slightly less. Even though the lens mount is MFT the sensor size is larger (four thirds)... Nice video, but make sure to have your specs in order. 🙂

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад

      I'm measuring it diagonally, I believe your calculation is based on the horizontal only, which would not be accurate as you need to account for both dimensions. WXH, that's a very common miss-information actually. Thanks for the support 👍

    • @DUST35
      @DUST35 5 лет назад

      @@THEDPJOURNEY So I understand better; what are the actual numbers you used? Did you compare using the same (or different) aspect ratios? To my thinking it is enough to use the horisontal measurement; as long as you (in the end) are using the whole width of the sensor... With the Pocket 4K camera I can see that this way of thinking might be a problem if you would use an aspect ratio of 16:9 since not the whole width of the sensor will be utilized. In this case the sensor crops the sides, while shooting 16:9 on a "Full Frame"-still camera (Canon 5d) it would crop top and bottom... 🤔

    • @THEDPJOURNEY
      @THEDPJOURNEY  5 лет назад

      @@DUST35 I would refer you to this article as their explanation covers everything: bit.ly/2YTcnVQ
      The only simple answer I would say about measuring only the horizontal... is that your image is 2 dimentional. So you need to account for both. With your rational, if a camera theoretically can shoot an image of 4K width but 1 pixel in hight, then would this be a 4K image? Your equation would say yes... but with my equation of accounting for both dimensions, then surely it's not a 4K. Hope that helps clarify
