that's funny, it's really a matter of taste because I was thinking I prefer when they film on Panasonic. I agree the Blackmagic maybe have more detail or sharper fine detail, I don't know. But I find it less comfortable to watch, less smooth.
I just got the 6K Pro a bit ago and freaking **love** it. Amazing output, ND filters are fantastic and I've been able to finally pick up a set of cinema lenses (all of the Meike primes) and a Great Joy 50mm anamorphic lens. I'll be getting the 35mm Great Joy when it comes out, too. I bought the original BMPCC 4K not long after it was released, and still have it for a 2nd cam.
I like this brutally honest take on black magic and agree with everything you said from praising the image quality to criticizing the ridiculous body design (and dumbass naming scheme black magic is sticking to). It’s to a point where black magic needs to pick a lane with a body redesign. They either need to build a better mirrorless body or go full box style camera. Because the current design is neither and is struggling with an identity crisis. It has the worst ergonomics of any mirrorless style camera on the market and sucks to rig out, unlike box style cameras. And this camera absolutely requires a complete build out to function anyway. You need to Mount an ssd, batteries, mics, etc. If they’re going to stick to horrible ergonomics, why not just make it a box like the countless cinema cameras out there. For example, I’d much rather rig out a zcam box than a bmcc. Hell that would be an amazing product imo, a red Komodo or zcam style mini box cinema camera for $2000 with decent mounting points. I’m sold.
Agree with all you've said, but the body design, despite appearing like a children's toy, is very comfortable and solid to hold and use, and the large screen is a God send compared to other smaller, sexier cameras. But again, Blackmagic should, in parallel, release different form factors including 'box' design preferably with internal space for one or two SSDs (seeing they're the go to option in the 'pocket' cameras) and an external monitor with cables / connector built into the mount, like their viewfinder, to eliminate cables dangling around..... but again, they should also keep the 'mirrorless' photo camera form factor too in my opinion.
Finally there is 1080p standard in camera screen resolution world. I hope soon all camera screen using that standard. 1080p = 2 mpx (RGB) = 6 mpx dot. Also I hope many more camera can record raw footage in the camera.
6:20 I kind of recommend against an external recorder. The HDMI out on the thing is only 1080p so you'd lose a lot of flexibility in POST if you decide to use an external recorder.
Yeah, I don't get why the GH6 doesn't support BRAW, at least externally. Well, the poll during a Lumix Live some time ago was heavily in favour of Apple, , but still. Also, why they are so slow with feature updates....
Former Pocket 4K owner. Didn’t really like the form factor as the body is quite wide so you need a bigger camera bag than it actually looks unless you don’t rig it up. The 6K series seemingly has the same issue, it’s just weirdly bulky.
No internal NDs means better lens compatibility with a PL mount conversation. The Ursa broadcaster G2 also uses the 6K sensor but faster processing and you can put an EF/PL mount on it. So that's the step up if you don't want to have 80MP
the bluetooth app is really good for the one man set up i have the 4k the braw is good but would i want the gh6 ...no raw is a problembut like you said get a ninja 5
There's been a funny amount of video-centric cameras over the last couple of years that have launched with CFast. I thought it was dead but it's definitely been revived! My theory with these newer cameras is that they do it because CFast uses SATA as opposed to PCI-E 3 like CFexpress, while available speeds are good enough.
The pro market is very conservative about adopting things that don't have concrete benefits, and the additional bandwidth simply isn't needed for compressed-RAW formats like BlackMagic Raw or ProRes Raw. The market will move if/when there's actually a requirement for more bandwidth, but until then backwards compatibility is more important. BlackMagic knows their customer and what they're doing here. I think their media choices make perfect sense.
It's not the camera for me, but I could see where this would be a good option for some people. The Pro model is definitely worth the extra cost for the ND filters. That X-H2S does sound mighty appealing. For me, I'm taking a hard look at the Canon R7 though. It's less expensive and still offers 10-bit recording with reliable autofocus and IBIS.
I think , canon is Crap . except there cinema lineup. Think 10 times before choosing canon Bro ! ( My personal experience) They have one of the Worst "Dynamic Range "
@@Hiah.l it's a flag ship product with both amazing video and photo capabilities. It's priced more than fair and I'm saying this as a Sony A9 a7III A7R4 shooter
@@Hiah.l Exactly. I'd love to have an X-H2S, but the R7 is soooooo much less expensive. Maybe the X-T4 is a good option? As with many things, it's not always about having "the best." Sometimes, it's about getting something you can afford that's "good enough."
Blackmagic needs to bring back the Global Shutter, like in the old days. And I want to see a camera from them to compete with the RED Komodo. Global Shutter, same square body style and mirrorless or interchangable mount. That would be a massive hit!
Its a video camera of course but can ik take 'raw' photo's as well? Like the bigggg tillable screen. Would be great for interior photography on a tripod
Great review ! 👍You didn't try to be hokey, jokey, and pokey 👍The image quality on the 6K looks really cinematic -In particular, the flesh tones are superior to any of the hybrid cameras I have seen lately (Maybe not so much as compared to the S1H ?). I think I would go the route of the URSA mini Pro 12K instead of the weird body the 6K comes in.😳
As someone who’s been watching your channel for a long time: The Blackmagic portions look so much better than the gh6 footage (as did the S1H footage) to my eyes.
I'd like to see BMD join the L Mount Alliance. Would give a nice boost to L Mount lens production and give BMD a modern mount without the cons of a long flange.
@@unn4medfeel1ng Yes there is. You can adapt any lens to it with adapters and sigma does sell all there APSC lens for L mount. Also a lot of Cinema glass is only for APSC coverage. Remember the RF mount it uses now is also a "full frame" mount.
@@unn4medfeel1ng it's FF and APS-C. Leica TL and SL used the L Mount to have a unified mount for both sensor sizes. Oh and nothing is stopping BMD from developing a FF camera.
@@jessecumberledge4530 my bad, I didn't know about Sigma crop lenses for L-mount. EF mount has EF-S crop lenses, although I'm not sure if BM supports it on the 6K.
Hey. Thanks for the review. What I'd like to see BM do, in order of priority, is: - mount with a more accommodating flange distance: I'm sticking with the BMPCC 4k with speedbooster so I can use my FD lenses, but I'd rather go straight in. Would be great if it had positive lock. But I know that is unlikely. - image quality (high iso noise) and rolling shutter improvements. I favour these over higher resolution, go back to 4k. - true full frame/Super35 sensor. I've had enough of camera companies claiming to have super35/full frame sensors when they just don't. i.e. BMPCC6K Sensor size = 23.10mm x 12.99mm. Super35 = 24.89mm x 18.66 - a body that is less of an odd shape. I'd sooner have a box, with a handle. But please BM don't lose the built in screen, it's excellent. - auto focus that's on par with Sony On another note, I'd say keep CFAST, because with sd cards users are VERY limited with choices for record formats.
Great video! How would you compare the 6K FF and Pro against the 6K G2? I'm considering the 6K G2 over the other two, because the difference of the 6K Pro pretty much only is the built-in ND filter. The 6K FF is full-frame, which can be worth it, but not sure if that's a big leap worth the money. Currently have a rigged out BMPCC 4k (with ext battery, matte box and nd filters, ext monitor etc.) and I am also not sure if it is worth the upgrade to the 6k G2. The 6k G2 has a crazy deal of €1500 and if I sell the BMPCC 4k, it is only €400 extra for me to upgrade.. Thank you!
Excellent review. If you're shooting long-form formal docs (lots of interviews) this camera series is unbeatable. I do think the Pro is worth the extra money although fair game to BMD squeezing an extra model out of the machining for the body.
I've never had an issue with the naming of Blackmagic cameras, and English is not my first language. What I'd like to see in a future iteration of the Pocket series is more of a cube shaped body, E-mount, Sony's autofocus system, higher frame rates and global shutter sensor...
@@mack_solo 😊 I live in PL lens mount and MFT lens mount world at present. I don’t own any EF mount lenses or EF native mount bodies. I’ve never owned a Canon video camera that I know of. Only Sony and Panasonic. 😊
I know that this video was made a long time ago but I would like you to comment on this bmp 6k g2 camera since its LCD monitor reduced its brightness to almost 50% less than the 6k pro, creating a big problem when it came to film thank you
Hey there! Long-time viewer. When I got my first camera I watched this channel's video a lot. GO CANADA! As a narrative creator, the more I watch review videos the more I see certain patterns in the talking-points. All these concerns sound like the issues that people who shoot weddings and church services and NOT narrative or documentary. Maybe you can address that in some of your content in the future? For me a 'cinema camera' is for..., well.., content that is going to be seen on a big screen, or will look great on a big screen. The fact that a cinema camera can be used to shoot a 2-hour TEDx conference keynote is nice...., but that's not cinema. Most of the time it's overkill or used as a selling point to clients..., The P6K reminds me of a film camera which is a box with film in it and a lens stuck to it. It's the choice of film stock, the operator, and the color timer who make the magic happen. Shooting at max settings makes my work as a creator easier. Autofocus? H265 Recording Options? Rolling Shutter? Using a wide variety of photograph lenses for video? These features would have been welcome additions to the ENG and Studio Cameras from days gone by...., As a solo shooter, I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having them. Showing an example of rolling shutter by panning a camera wildly in a scenario that doesn't call for it is kind of pointless, but the drummer was awesome! Maybe showing how the rolling shuitter effected the drummers moments would have been a better choice or sports, but then again who considers a cinema camera appropriate for sports????? I just want the best quality image possible in order to tell the story. Sometimes that is a Smartphone camera, a 360 Camera or a Rented Alexa. It would be great to see videos of other creators' workflows with the cinema cameras and does a particular camera benefit certain types of shooters or not. BM has excellent image quality at a great price, but most of the opinions and reviews are for commercial shooters IMO. One more thing..., Why are internal NDs such a big deal?? To me using internal NDs are like buying a Porsche and keeping the stock rims the car came with! and Mr. Drake...., we need MORE cowbell!
It seems that the wonderful quality images is what makes this camera special, and really, isn't that what good video is all about ? I'm looking forward to the next generation of BM cameras with mirrorless, with stabilization, smaller size, but keep the wondeful image quality.
Thanks Jordan! I wonder how you feel about Pocket 6K versus Panasonic S5 with the BM Video Assist 5". Price wise they end up around the same bracket, so would love to hear your thoughts on that as an option. Also do you think Blackmagic Design might end up being the next member of the "L-Mount Alliance"?
Hi! Great review and very helpful! May I ask your opinion as to what camera is best when in comes to producing Narrative Films (full lenght and short) and Documentaries? This or the Sony FX3? Thank you!
Black Magic has created one of the best software(davinci Resolve). Now its time for them to focus and create a better camera to look at! And address some of the issues with AF, missing wave form and battery life.
They need a box shaped camera with RF mount and better batery option. I use and love Davinci Resolve an still waiting for that new camera... But I'm afraid that they will came late for the "Red Komodo-Z cam - Canon C70" party
Keep wishing, they have never officially announced or leaked any type of information regarding a box design from Black Magic. I blame the RUclips channels who kept hyping this idea up with "facts" they either made or got from other unreliable sources and nothing ever came out
Thanks for the review. Questions... Is this camera great in low-light conditions, or not great? Another question... Your audio came through great. Was there a mic under your shirt or is the mic on the camera just that good? Thank you.
Why are people complaining about having access to the largest range lens mount? That was the whole point of moving away from MFT. Yeah, it's not E-mount for a reason. Good point about Cfast and waveforms, but it's a bit evident you're not a regular user - which is fine, it's just that there was no mentioning of first things first: geta grip and them batteries 😄 (and external power option are excellent also) ; and no mentioning of AF select and gyro data. Interesting to see people's take on ND filters. For me $500 is better spent somehwere else, so this version is fine.
The big advantage for me was that I already own like 20 EF lenses, so that investment is a good match, all things being equal - I wish Canon took a page from Nikon with lens mounts... seems like a waste to have to re-buy all your lenses or be stuck with adapters... I have many cameras, but I couldn't pass the G2 up when it was sub $1500 new... I recommend the Small Rig Cage for it with the wooden handles too!
I really appreciate your reviews. I am *SUBSCRIBED!* I want IBUS and excellent auto focus in a camera. I think a Sony Alpha a7S III is in my future. Have you reviewed it? (I'll search for it on this channel.) I love the levity. Keep it up.
The main advantage and maybe the only advantage of specialized videocameras is the intergraded multiple optical neutral density filters. ND filters are vital for videographers because beyond the triangle of shutterspeed-aperture-ISO there is the frame rate rate factor too which usually demands ND filters.
I’m getting ready to buy one of these. Good thing SSD memory prices have come down. I’m going to buy a 4TB external SSD which should easily give me over 12 hours of video.
I think it can compare to the Sigma FP, which outputs raw and is full frame. Also, the BMPCC 4K is still only $1295 and you don't have to use EF lenses with that.
We are creating a second look video focusing on the Sigma FP after the updates. We are planning to compare to some of the top offerings to see how this little camera measures up after a couple of years and some 4 firmware updates. Sub if curious. It should be an interesting one.

A fair assessment. I still have the BMPCC original, and part of why I love it is the entirety film-dedicated menu.
I do want to point out that B-Raw inside of Premiere works great now. I personally own a BMPCC 4K and my employer has us use the 6k Pro.
Hello great content I enjoyed it. So u can only edit blackmagic footage in Divinichi ? Im so used to Sony Vegas 🤦♀️
Used to read your reviews years ago. Nice to see you on YT, Just subbed
Thanks BMD for EF-mount!
Yeah, I don't get why the GH6 doesn't support BRAW, at least externally. Well, the poll during a Lumix Live some time ago was heavily in favour of Apple, , but still. Also, why they are so slow with feature updates....
Excellent review that was badly needed. Thanks !
Jordan, your lav cable is happy to see us 👀
Great review! Are you going to test the Z Cam anytime soon?
Is the screen on the 6k G2 the same brightness as the original 6k or something in between the 6k and 6k pro?
Another Blackmagic camera announced today (2/23/2023) with the EF mount. Is there any hope they could use the Fuji XF mount?
Former Pocket 4K owner. Didn’t really like the form factor as the body is quite wide so you need a bigger camera bag than it actually looks unless you don’t rig it up. The 6K series seemingly has the same issue, it’s just weirdly bulky.
When will you do the complete analysis of om-1?
No internal NDs means better lens compatibility with a PL mount conversation. The Ursa broadcaster G2 also uses the 6K sensor but faster processing and you can put an EF/PL mount on it. So that's the step up if you don't want to have 80MP
the bluetooth app is really good for the one man set up i have the 4k the braw is good but would i want the gh6 ...no raw is a problembut like you said get a ninja 5
Gotta give it to BM. They do some magical skin tones!
Thank you for comparing the rolling shutter readout on this system. something I didn’t know
There's been a funny amount of video-centric cameras over the last couple of years that have launched with CFast.
I wish camera manufacturers adopted well proven computer standards. Imagine NVMe M.2 drives - 1TB for 100 bucks at 1.7Gb/s.
@@patrickchase5614 I agree.
@@mack_solo You know that that's a legit option with these cameras, right? The USB C recording option is so great to have
It's not the camera for me, but I could see where this would be a good option for some people.
( My personal experience)
They have one of the Worst "Dynamic Range "
H2S is lightyears ahead of the R7
@@QUINPANO H2S's price is lightyears ahead too of R7
Can’t wait for black magic to come out with a new body design. Smaller and more of a cube.
Hmmm....Lumix S5 + Blackmagic video assist. Full frame, much better rolling shutter, AFC is slightly better, better in low light etc etc
I think I would go the route of the URSA mini Pro 12K instead of the weird body the 6K comes in.😳
As someone who’s been watching your channel for a long time: The Blackmagic portions look so much better than the gh6 footage (as did the S1H footage) to my eyes.
and Davinci now has gyro data stabilization. It's by no means a gimbal replacement but you can edit the short clips shoot wide and get that stabe.
Beautiful. Can you record with G2 in Braw 4k dci in 24 and 60 frames? Thanks a lot
I'd like to see BMD join the L Mount Alliance. Would give a nice boost to L Mount lens production and give BMD a modern mount without the cons of a long flange.
Yep big mistake sticking with the old RF IMO. Really limits the versatility in 2022.
L Mount is full frame, while BM has no FF cameras, so there's no point
@@unn4medfeel1ng Yes there is. You can adapt any lens to it with adapters and sigma does sell all there APSC lens for L mount. Also a lot of Cinema glass is only for APSC coverage. Remember the RF mount it uses now is also a "full frame" mount.
@@unn4medfeel1ng it's FF and APS-C. Leica TL and SL used the L Mount to have a unified mount for both sensor sizes. Plus you can adapt just about any SLR lens to it, including FD lenses that can't adapt to EF.
And finally, there are plenty of native APS-C lenses already available L Mount.
What I'd like to see BM do, in order of priority, is:
- mount with a more accommodating flange distance: I'm sticking with the BMPCC 4k with speedbooster so I can use my FD lenses, but I'd rather go straight in.
Super35 = 24.89mm x 18.66
- a body that is less of an odd shape. I'd sooner have a box, with a handle. But please BM don't lose the built in screen, it's excellent.
- auto focus that's on par with Sony
On another note, I'd say keep CFAST, because with sd cards users are VERY limited with choices for record formats.
Thank you!
I know they’re not new, but would like to see you do a review of the ZCAM line up
Great video! But can you do a low light performance review aswell? I really wanna know how it does in those circumstances
In the $1500-$2500 price range, what is the best video capable camera for enthusiasts? The new Fujifilm? The OMD-1? A Sony APS-C?
Excellent review. If you're shooting long-form formal docs (lots of interviews) this camera series is unbeatable. I do think the Pro is worth the extra money although fair game to BMD squeezing an extra model out of the machining for the body.
I've never had an issue with the naming of Blackmagic cameras, and English is not my first language. What I'd like to see in a future iteration of the Pocket series is more of a cube shaped body, E-mount, Sony's autofocus system, higher frame rates and global shutter sensor...
You can move autofocus area by touching screen and You forgot mention Gyro stabilization with this camera in Davinci.
EF mount being phased out? This video is the first place that I am hearing this. Thank you for being such a great resource. 👍
...where have you been? 😄
Most of the time it's overkill or used as a selling point to clients...,
The P6K reminds me of a film camera which is a box with film in it and a lens stuck to it.
One more thing...,
Why are internal NDs such a big deal?? To me using internal NDs are like buying a Porsche and keeping the stock rims the car came with!
and Mr. Drake...., we need MORE cowbell!
It seems that the wonderful quality images is what makes this camera special, and really, isn't that what good video is all about ? I'm looking forward to the next generation of BM cameras with mirrorless, with stabilization, smaller size, but keep the wondeful image quality.
Man this defs beats my Nikon...nice bumping into you both shooting the G6 today, keep up the awesome work!
bmpcc6kG2( the way we cut it in text, need more time to sound it because i stuck between the last C and 6 at evrey time i do!!
May I know which leofoto tripod you are using to shoot this video? Would you recommend the same for wildlife photo/video?
Good video, how is the autofocus
Does it has dual recording or livestreaming and recording internally
Thank you.
Nice! What file format does it save the video as .mov? .mp4?
I am *SUBSCRIBED!*
I want IBUS and excellent auto focus in a camera. I think a Sony Alpha a7S III is in my future. Have you reviewed it? (I'll search for it on this channel.) I love the levity. Keep it up.
They should join the L mount. Although Rf is more likely.
A workable AF and shooting "real" high quality stills are the two features I wanted from upcoming pocket cameras.
Strobe sync would be amazing.
The main advantage and maybe the only advantage of specialized videocameras is the intergraded multiple optical neutral density filters. ND filters are vital for videographers because beyond the triangle of shutterspeed-aperture-ISO there is the frame rate rate factor too which usually demands ND filters.
could you please elaborate on the relationship between framerate and NDs?
Where's the audio for Jordan's band?!!!
Panasonic S5 or GH6 are way better options imo, the S5 can now output RAW to blackmagic now so that is a huge plus.
Just a heads up it’s not the same Braw when it’s not an actual bm camera.
Hello, does it have the same blue tint issue?
Thanks for a well made video!!
How much expenses after i just buy the BMPCC6k body only ?
Love these guys.
Just hold down on the focus point and it can be moved. You can also tap and hold to focus
I’m getting ready to buy one of these. Good thing SSD memory prices have come down. I’m going to buy a 4TB external SSD which should easily give me over 12 hours of video.
Will we see a Wooden Niccolls with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2?
Unfortunately not, I didn't have enough time with the camera to put together a narrative production.
Does anyone know if that Blue tint issue has been resolved on the BMPC6K Pro camera?
Get one of those Fujifilm X-H2S sensors on a new Blackmagic body asap!
I think it can compare to the Sigma FP, which outputs raw and is full frame. Also, the BMPCC 4K is still only $1295 and you don't have to use EF lenses with that.
Except the biggest problem with the FP is the file sizes, it chews through memory because it’s uncompressed raw, and only up to 4K
@@djmatt1 But SSDs are getting so cheap. They're almost down to $100 for a terabyte. I use them for my BMPCC 4K and forego the dumb cards.
We are creating a second look video focusing on the Sigma FP after the updates. We are planning to compare to some of the top offerings to see how this little camera measures up after a couple of years and some 4 firmware updates. Sub if curious. It should be an interesting one.
@@angryrabbitproductions1690 That will be fun!
