Excellent walk through the best ive seen, enough detail to for me to now decide, I've had it crawling on my back under cars and its off to the garage and the kids can starve for a week to pay the garage bill and the wife can do without her car until mine is fixed😁😁😁😁 Seriously this is a great video guide for those with experience to follow on key sequence's and for those without to understand the tedious work involved.
Thanks so much for the nice comment. It's one of them jobs you might Start regretting halfway through you started it in the first place. I personally wouldn't do it on the ground but it is possible just a lot harder.
Great video man.Im replacing failed EGR valve on my 1.6tdi Touran and can say changing cambelt is easier😅Glad I found your video that gave me an idea what I'm up against
Wow, just wow... Actually I wanted to buy a B8 cr tdi, but after watching a few videos like this, thanks NO. I will just stick with my old B5.5 avf tdi. Way easier to maintain in every aspect. You could try it. I never had any success with any egr cleaner on this type of egr. It's normally the electronics that goes wrong but it's a mix bag of problems with this egr, blocked, stuck open, the gears go, the motor/electronics etc etc. If you have any questions just ask. You can pull the motor off In 10 min and try test it / move the gears etc But it's 99 % of the time it's a replacement part

Hi it's on a sticker on the timing belt upper cover . It may also be on a sticker in the boot of the car. It's also on the user manual books on the first page and/ or service manual Hope that helps
Hi I'm not sure if it is stamped for the engine code but a engine number should be. I'll pop my head into the next VW with that engine and see can I find it
Man, thats a hell of a job. I just recently had the coil light come on along with the engine management light, took the car to a garage for a diagnostic scan and came back with 40 grams build up (I think in the dpf). Didn't have time to get it fixed so ended up getter the car back then the dpf light came on. Took the car for a drive and done an actve regeneration (driving in 4th gear at 3000 rpm) and the dpf light, coil light and engine management light went off. Got back home from the drive and the coil light came back on. Took the car bacl to the garage for another scan and came up with error code P246E00 (egr temperature sensor) but the emission build up was down at 7 grams when before it waa at 40 grams. I don't know if its the dpf thats causing problems or the egr temperature sensor, it's doing my head in and its stressing me out.
If you have any codes try fix that first The coil light is the engine light not sure why they have two lights . The egr temp sensor is easy to find out if its gone. That's probably all your problem is.
@@murphyslaw2020 Hey, thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it. So, turns out the EGT (temperature sensor) is away, I managed to order one and I'm just waiting for someone to come and fit it, I know it's a bit of a nightmare to get to but it needs to be done. There's always something that happens to me this time of year btw. Last year the turbo packed in on the taxi I was renting and because the turbo is built into the engine it was gonna cos the guy £1400 to replace it because its an engine teardown, replace the turbo and build the engine back up. Luckily he managed to source an engine with 65,000 miles on it for around £600 and got it back on the road. That car was amazing, it had 290,000 miles on the clock and still felt so smooth driving.
The egt can be hard to get out sometimes your better off cutting of the top of the sensor and just us a normal socket vs a open end spanner and maybe some heat.
@@murphyslaw2020 Quick update: the mobile mechanic came over and changed the EGT sensor but didn't have a code reader to reset the fault codes. Luckily a friend of mine managed to reset the codes but now the scan shows that the dpf is blocked. The EGT sensor code is away but there's some other codes. I'm gonna take the car to the garage tomorrow and see what happens, its really stressing me out, something always happens at this time of year..
You could do a force regeneration of the dpf. If you have a scan let's you or clean it in the car its normally easy on the vw just put the cleaner down the pressure sensor pipe that goes to the top of the dpf . You can get cleaners that are in spary can for like 30 Or make sure you have like 1/2 tank of fuel and try make the car regen its self by going for a long drive 20 min or more you might still need a scanner to reset it After you get it clean you should try to tell the car you put a new dpf in but make sure its fully cleaned I good scan tool can do all the above Let us know how you get on. The next time I'm doing a dpf clean I'll try video it.
Toil , took me about 12 hours over 3 ngts after work on the drive . Absolute mare of a job especially without a pit or ramps. No wonder VW want £2k to replace , i took turbo manifold out and pulled it up and out 😳

Nice video!! What car was it ?? I've just bought a Passat B6, 170BH, engine code BMR - with some issues of course 😢 The most annoying - leaking coolant. Got to top up pretty much every day - it's like a glass a day and I'm doing about 50-100 miles a day. There's no obvious sign of the leak on the floor, so... Could be HG... Or EGR cooler... Just wonder where this EGR cooler is on my one? Front or back of the engine?? Some people said this can be by-passed... Byt seems to be quite complicated job.... Any help would be appreciated :)
Hi that code points to a dpf problem but there maybe a underline fault. If you have a suitable diagnostics I'd clear /fix any codes and try a dpf Regen. What sort of milage is on the car
I can't remember it was around 400 Euro. Iv fit afew after market ones and 2 of them fail in less then year . I only fit OEM now. It's a big job to do so I never want to do it a 2nd time for free on the same car under warranty.
Which other brands did you try? i've change mine with a EGR from NRF (on a 1,6TDI Touran). No errors so far - but when i accelerate normally it's like the car is a bit hesitant around 1900-2100 revs. Nothing major (can be felt by a passenger only seldom) but can be felt easier by the driver (due to better feeling with the pedal). If the accelartion is very slow or i push "pedal to the metal" then it accelerates as it should with no "hesitation". So error can be felt a little only by normal accelartion by the driver. Do you think it could also be a bad quality EGR? also i've afterwards noted that the producer of the Orginal EGR is WAHLER and i've found out that they have an aftermarket part Wahler 710861D. Do you use that one or the VW branded part?
On this particular type of egr we used the VW part but I have used other bands that were the same make as the OEM part like you said above and you can see were they rubbed off the VW etc branding and there the same part. I can't recall the other brands as it so long ago.
@@murphyslaw2020 thanks for the quick reply. Can you remember which errors you got when using other brands? Was it functional errors - ie. the car does not drive/preform well. or was it electronic errors - ie. you get errors when reading out with a diagnostic tool.

I'm having issues on my scirocco 2.0 tdi, I suspect EGR related. It'll randomly jump, almost a stalling sensation, when accelerating, but doesn't matter if i'm doing 70 or 15mph, the feeling is the same, normally straight after the engine has had time to warm up anyway. I'm not sure if i'm fortunate or not to not have any fault codes on the dash, but makes it a nightmare figuring out what is wrong with it. Any ideas anyone??
Have you had the car scanned for fault codes ? Sounds like you maybe going into limp for a short time. The turbo actuator could be making it over boost
There is setting you can check for actuator on the live data or even maybe using a multimeter. Id test it with a vacuum tester. I'd had one that was working but not as intended. You will need to adjust it on the car I had to cut up an old 10mm spanner to adjust it
@@murphyslaw2020 I haven't, but that was next on my list to do. I know on the 2014 models like mine the EGRs are known to electronically fail, so I'm hoping its not that aha!
Update - so it turns out my EGR, DPF and turbo are all fine. There was a burst DPF pressure pipe however, although fixed that and that wasn't the problem. No error codes on OBD either. Throttle, fuel injectors, and boost pressure reading fine, the OBD didn't even detect anything wrong when driving it and the "jump" occurred. Garage reckoned its probably something electrical, loose wiring etc, maybe even software related. Unfortunately it has to go into VW for diagnostic - not looking forward to that bill! I'm also thinking maybe a dodgy/dirty MAF sensor, as that has never been cleaned or replaced, so if a firmware update can't solve it, that's next.

Hi it's most likely your egr the glow light is the engine light as well on this model There is afew different types of egr one on the front that a easy job. But it's mostly this type on your car as it's a 1.6
Hi it can affect the car in many ways. The car may go into limp mode. It could block the dpf Full the intake system whit soot Block up pipes Kill the turbo etc etc etc
I have alrady changed egr valves 3 times on my 1.6 tdi. Very often its the technology that goes bad. If you can screw it of and hack the moderboard and put it together agai. The mechanism steel works very well. Save money and time. Egr is just shit for our cars. My friend did deinstall that on his car and the car consumed 1 liter less fuel.
I have fixed one or two over the years but they just go bad again sooner or later. I would only fit a new oem one for the amount of work it takes to fit one
Hi the drive shaft is not really in the way that much. Iv done about 10 to 15 EGR valve of this type and never removed the shaft, I can see why you would think it would help but it just adds more work and time to the job for very little pay back
To many unknowns for most people. Not saying it wouldn't work just changing the software can be unset future repairs etc. The valve can stick open and mapping it out on its own won't work you will have to blank it off. The Regen should work normally even if the egr is mapped out but the egr helps achieve higher temps on regeneration of the dpf There is pros and cons to every job like this. The cost is probably much cheaper and quicker in most cases
@@murphyslaw2020 very true I had limp mode and egr code so had it mapped out don't think they blanked it off runs fine no loss of power but last week had dpf light on so motorway to clear it just was cheaper than a egr plus 4 hrs labour
If you want to blank it off it's easy plus you can get kits on ebay I'd only use stainless steel kits. Iv seen some of the mild steel and aluminium one fail and bits of the blanking plate go into the engine. The egr is a poor design iv done to many at this stage It's mad to think the Audi A4 has the same engine but the egr is about 100 and half an hour to fit. The newer cars are getting worse and even more problems
Jaysus h almighty! Y'know what, I'm going to go off and find a car like I used to own in the 1970's/80's, something simple that I could service repair or maintain all by myself with a few basic tools not all this crap modern vehicles are. I've got a VW T4 2.5 van I bought new in 2003, it's a bleedin nightmare to work on, currently in 'limp' mode and I'm spending time and money trying to make it go, it's been a month so far and no progress. I could fix my Mini van, Moggy van, Austin 1100, Austin Allegro overnight if they ever had a problem, which was seldom to never! I have a 1971 (so therefore historic) SWB Land Rover I'm seriously considering putting back on the road, it NEVER let me down in over 20 years. And they call this progress?
The newer car are even worse. Just not designed to last at all you will be lucky to see 10 year out of a brand new car you can buy today. If I was you I'd restore your 4x4 to be a good Daly driver and it will probably still be going in 30 years
The VW parts are around 350 to 500 I can't recall 💯 and at about 6 to 8 hours at 100 an hour . One of the vw TEC i talked to said he can do them in about 3 hours because he has done so many
No joke- After doing nearly every job imaginable on a number of cars without a lift... this was the job that finally pushed me over the edge and made me go out and buy a lift. I got under the car while on jack stands, remembered the other crap i've pulled on this tdi (a lot, including removing the trans, timing belt, CP3 HPFP, etc etc etc), and said "ya know what, I'm old enough and have wrenched for long enough to not go through this again". So I bought a used lift, restored it, got it aligned and adjusted yesterday, and will get this job done tomorrow. And I'm selling the car the next week, because out of every car I've ever owned, this has required the most maintenance, bar none. The most frustrating part being I always stayed ahead on maintenance and did my best to get everything in the area "while im in there". I enjoyed it when it was running, but never again.
You get to a point where I'll only use the lift and I wouldn't even dream of doing it on the ground. Its just me and the boss. He doesn't work in much in the workshop but we have 4 lifts. Sorry to hear about all the drama with the car. We get cars traded in all the time we're people just don't want to fix the problems and just had enough, so just buy a new car
@@murphyslaw2020 I'm about halfway through the job and I'm extremely grateful for the lift already. Honestly, I wasn't much of a VW fan going into it, but always had a soft spot for tdis. I wouldn't mind trying out an earlier PD car, but I don't want to wrench on this one again. I had bought it off a close friend a few years back, and did a fair bit to it- all the 100k repairs and then some, stage 2 tune, dsg tune, etc. Perhaps if it was a manual I'd like it a bit more. However, my friend comes back from living abroad next week and I told him "hey, you can have it back" and he agreed, so my close friend gets back the car he loves but with another 100k of maintenance complete and I get to funnel my money into something else :)

You could try it. I never had any success with any egr cleaner on this type of egr. It's normally the electronics that goes wrong but it's a mix bag of problems with this egr, blocked, stuck open, the gears go, the motor/electronics etc etc.
If you have any questions just ask.

If you have any codes try fix that first
The coil light is the engine light not sure why they have two lights .
You can get cleaners that are in spary can for like 30
Or make sure you have like 1/2 tank of fuel and try make the car regen its self by going for a long drive 20 min or more you might still need a scanner to reset it
After you get it clean you should try to tell the car you put a new dpf in but make sure its fully cleaned
I good scan tool can do all the above
Let us know how you get on.

Hi if your car has the egr on the front next to the throttle body. The cooler may be seized it's at the back of the engine next to the dpf . You can put your hand up and operate the value like in the video above there might be a small heat cover on it that may have to take off

Could this imitate a head gasket failure?
The cooler can leak and the coolant be used by the engine.

Recently started to get the flashing glow plug light when the car warms up a little bit,
Scanned it with a tinny scanner and got p0403
Any ideas mate ?
Hey sounds like you have an egr problem. clear the codes and see what comes back. The glow plug light is just the engine light it means the engine has a fault code
Even buy a cheap odb tool on eBay or the likes and pop up the codes

You will just end up with a new car with problems 10x more expensive to fix
No he should have removed the right driveshaft and flange, there is no washers just gaskets and the bolts arent that Hard to reach with proper tools
Hi the drive shaft is not really in the way that much. Iv done about 10 to 15 EGR valve of this type and never removed the shaft, I can see why you would think it would help but it just adds more work and time to the job for very little pay back
Madness
thank you show match
No problem
Best video.
Map it out and do dpf regeneration manually on motorway 😁
To many unknowns for most people. Not saying it wouldn't work just changing the software can be unset future repairs etc.
The valve can stick open and mapping it out on its own won't work you will have to blank it off.
The Regen should work normally even if the egr is mapped out but the egr helps achieve higher temps on regeneration of the dpf
There is pros and cons to every job like this.
The egr is a poor design iv done to many at this stage
It's mad to think the Audi A4 has the same engine but the egr is about 100 and half an hour to fit.
The newer cars are getting worse and even more problems
@@murphyslaw2020 yes this is a bad one to get to..where does the blanking plate fit on this one
@@glyncooper1491 5:10 sec in the video I point to were the blanking plate can go
Jaysus h almighty!
If I was you I'd restore your 4x4 to be a good Daly driver and it will probably still be going in 30 years
I guess I won't be doing it myself then
Not Straightforward there is afew hours in the job
Local garage just quoted me £3.5k to replace this.
That's just mad
The VW parts are around 350 to 500 I can't recall 💯 and at about 6 to 8 hours at 100 an hour . One of the vw TEC i talked to said he can do them in about 3 hours because he has done so many
No way in hell anyone is doing this without a hoist.
The hoist makes it easier for sure
@@RocanMotor 100%, I am going to sell mine once it is all fixed up.
Great video, but still kind of would have liked to have heard and seen all the grunts, groans, and tools being used removing everything ...LOL. With that said, OMG all that for a lousy EGR.
The video would've just been hours of bad Language and me talking to myself about Quitting the job lol
Fucking hell. Most of diesel cars arent that hard to reach out the egr! I have a polo tdi 1.2 and the egr is stuck open. It kept stalling the car but i unplugged the return gas pipe and the car is now working but exhaust basically coming into the engine lol i still drive it but i will sell it soon because i genuinely dont want the car anymore just because of how hard is to get to the egr. Not all mechanics can do yhis job. Never buying a VW again.
It's a real pain in the neck to do. It shouldn't be this hard. When some egr valves are 2 bolts to remove
@@murphyslaw2020 exactly..my egr is ruining my engine at this point. I know not all mechanics can do this job and if they can they will charge me a fortune. I rather look for a honda or Toyota car honestly
looks easier to drop the engine
Probably quicker 🤣
Nice one and No Swearing LOL
The first one I did was a nightmare 😂 there was more then swearing going on

I just have a issue atm is no boost also no fsulty code mechanic told me coud me blocked egr cooler
Could be the turbo actuator

2nd I’ve just put in WYNNS Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner , Which I’m trying out Before the expense of a New EGR valve
I’ve also ordered a Pierburg EGR Vacuum Sensor valve

holy fuck that is a small job when its not 4wd
I never did a 4wd one. Very rare to see anything like that we're I live.
@@murphyslaw2020 u have to drop the subframe, exhaust, right driveshaft and the halfshaft in the transfer case to remove the turbo oil drain.
since you need to take it out where the exhaust is.
Because the transfer case and the propshaft is in the way.
unplug diesel heater water hose.

Ive heard horror stories from this vw 1.6 tdi common rail engine from 2009 ? Imagine what that will cost you from a garage for a simple egr swap? Be warned stick to older 1.9 pd engine?
Yes they do have lots of problem's the 2.0 TDI is a better option in my mind less problems and basically the same engine
Yes im gutted? im after seat altea xl with both them engines plus how hard is it to get a reliable autobox nowadays? Dsg is ok till goes wrong? Or the ford powershift that is horrendous? With your skills if you could fix powershift gearboxes for less than a grand? Ud be a millionaire in no time lol?
The power shift is a nightmare. Even the local gearbox place won't work on them or if they do no warranty. We just stopped taking them in for sale or trade INS.

any other method on getting it out ? i have 4wd and i dont want to disassemble the driveshaft
Hi I've not done a 4wd one. I do recall someone talking about a 4wd one in the Comments.
The drive shaft is very easy to remove on most models. I mostly just undo the 3 bolts on the ball joint, the 6or so bolts on the cv at the box and just let it drop
