Thing I always find funny about the old days is just the amount (and quality) of sound some drummers could get out of just the most basic drum kits. Like if you watch Greg Errico from Sly & The Family Stone - - - half the time he's on a friggin' Sears Silvertone set!! But then after they've made it big, they'll upgrade to something choice like a Ludwig, or Gretsch kit and forever chase the sound they once had with the el cheapo kit. Life's funny like that, y'know?
Because Barbata was so great on the drums, especially on that performance on Ed Sullivan, I'd always wished that they had a separate camera on John exclusively. He was that great as not only a drummer but a performer.
The guy playing the Rickenbacker manages to break his guitar strap at 1:11 and ends up holding it....Totally agree about John Barbata on the drums...pure class.
OMG..thank goodness for the great memories. What a WONDERFUL, INCREDIBLE time it was to be young! We didn't realize how VERY blessed we were. Howard was such a great front man, and, they made such "feel good" music. TURTLES FOREVER! 🤗❤️❤️❤️🎵🎶
Howard's voice was amazing; he is truly an under-rated singer; Mark V 's harmonizing incredible- entire group was awesome! This group to me was right up there with "the Beatles" - Loved soooo many of their songs and listed to several all summer in my pool!
Mark Volman was quite the showman judging from this old footage. I remember as a small boy growing up in England in the 1960s the Turtles were always being played on the radio. As they were American, we knew little about them. Such an underrated band. It's good that, thanks to the internet, we can revisit the music from that time.

Bill Danoff and Taffy Nifert of The Starland Vocal Band who had a Hit with their Song "Afternoon Delight" wrote it for Johnny Cash but when John Denver heard it, He wanted to record it and then he helped finish the song so, he only wrote part of it.
13 years old in 1967, and I loved this great band. They were a US band who were charting great hits in the middle of the British Invasion in the USA !!! ROCK ON TURTLES !!!!
PS: the British Invasion was the term used about all of the British bands that came to the USA after the Beatles success in the USA. Most of them were mediocre at best with one or two mediocre songs, but they dominated the US top 40 charts for no other reason then that, they were from england. "hello, we're from england, just like the Beatles."
It had good things for sure. But the past always looks rosy. We also had the Vietnam War and gross hippies spitting on veterans. And Charles Manson, so things weren't perfect.
I remember seeing this performance on Ed Sullivan. i was a junior in high school and went next door to see it on our neighbor's homemade Heathkit color TV.
They sure were a happy bunch . The clowning around was kind of energizing . I am 74 now and watching my second Turtles video . Remember them from decades ago and still listening if played on oldies radio .
I’ve fallen in love with this band, proper gone down a rabbit hole of their music all from a sample or two from some hip hop tracks i love. Such a talented band.
Loved them from kiddo on up! If I’m ever having a bad day, this song is a great pick-me-up! Turtles and the Monkees should be in the R&R Hall of Fame. This performance was so smooth and engaging. The 60s hippies colors in the background are awesome too!
You've got a second vote in that nomination. Anyone who was young during that period,(1967), could not avoid the ubiquity of those two acts. The Monkees, The Turtles and yes, Paul Revere & The Raiders were all over the place that year, and what a good one it was.
Incredible string of hits from 1965 to 1969 gave us great memories for those who lived during that time. This song peaked at #3 in June, 1967. This sounds better than the studio recording. It really bothers me that for years the only song of theirs many radio stations play is "Happy Together", forgetting that their were eight other top 40 hits. These guys should have been millionaires by this time but their label White Whale cheated them out of as much as they could. When the group left the label folded not long after.
I probably saw this watching Ed Sullivan with my Grandmother when I was 3 years old...It's still a great song to this day and the only Turtles song that has stood the test of time....The great vocal style here is very similar to other singers from that era John Sebastian And Don Ciccone (Mr Dyingly Sad)...This is the sound the Turtles should have stayed with. If you listen to their greatest hits their song styles were all over the place and mostly not sounding good. This was their one great fun song...
