    The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    One of my favorite groups of the '60's! Love their happy carefree sound! The Turtles made two appearances on the Sullivan show. On this first appearance, they sang "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be with Me", the latter of which has already been posted, and is really fantastic too! "Happy Together" went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was written by Garry Bonner & Alan Gordon. Fantastic post! Also, I've wanted to mention this for a while, to anyone who is interested, I'm the same Tom Smith who has been posting comments since near the start of the channel. When YT changed the handles, I chose Tom Elvis Smith as my new one because I thought it sounded more memorable than plain Tom Smith. :)

    By 67, some groups still played totally live (Doors, Cowsills) while others did live vocals over pre recorded backing tracks (Stones). I’m not sure who made the decision as to who did what. The live stuff was so much better and it’s a shame they phased it out.

    • @Ryan-on5on
      @Ryan-on5on 7 месяцев назад

      This was probably more a function of the musical and instrumental complexity of the songs being performed than a strict policy by the Ed Sullivan Show. It's also helpful to remember that studio recording technology during this era was advancing at such a rate that sounds were being created on record that couldn't easily be recreated in live performance. Heavy-production songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "Good Vibrations" would've been all but impossible to perform live without the aid of some pre-recorded tracks. It would be interesting, though, to know who most often had the final say as to whether a backing track would be used or not.

      It seemed to me that only the singer was live. Certain segments of the song were different than the original record unless it was recorded earlier and used for the show. Which also makes sense why the other singer came over. He knew his mike wasn’t connected.

    Always appreciated my home borough being represented by the lead singer. Yup, Howard Kaylan hailed from the only mainland borough of NYC.... THE BRONX!❤

    I was born in 74 and remember hearing this song as well as many others while my dad had the radio going on a local channel that played this era. I always felt I should have been in my late teens or early 20s to be able to be apart of this generation and enjoy it in person. Brings me so much joy listening to it.

    Brilliant number. But the thought that comes to mind is how far we've come since this time... technologically and socially. The sound system, cameras and broadcast technology at CBS were, of course, state of the art for their day.. and now would be considered downright primitive. Heck, my family watched this on a black & white TV!

    My grandsons she 8&9 hate today’s music. They say it’s rude and nasty. My music is so awesome. This is their favorite song. no druggy, screaming hate or sec filled lyrics. I’m so proud of my kids and grandkids. I stopped listening to “ Rock n roll when Abby road Beatles and Mic Jaggers Rolling Stones came out. I must have been 16 when I stopped. lol now they’ve hit me singing Monkeys , Turtle’s. Herman Hermits all over again. Yep I’m old but love the platinum oldies.

    This is one of two of our songs! My husband and I danced to this one at our wedding and When a man loves a woman ! He said these are our songs. So cheeky but so good and carefree! We’ve been married for 33 years !

    ...can we talk about what NICE GUYS The Turtles look like!?? ...they have 'ordinary Guy' looks, but are attractive enough to be thought of, as a "Rock Group" (0:55) ....lucky them, to have one of the most DEFINING tunes from the 1960's..... (1:11) ...
