The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

A timeless masterpiece. Amazing how a British band captured the true spirit of an American folk song...
That in essence was the entire British invasion. Young British bands from London and the North found Blues and folk, largely African-American music brought it back to America and the white youth.
I didn’t even know they were British. Dang.
Folk?
@@Carvalhion yes folk. If I’m correct they didn’t write and no one knows for sure who wrote it and the song is really old. But idk. I might be thinking of another song.
The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s, but probably has its roots in traditional English folk song.
Eric Burdon was like 22 or 23 at this time. One of the most powerful vocalists of all time. His low notes sound amazing and so do the same notes an octave up. That is SO rare. Most vocalists just tend to sound different when singing in different registers but this guy keeps his tone consistent, no matter if he is singing low or singing very high. And I’m sure this has been pointed out 1000 times before: no auto tune.
Absolutely agree👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
They sound incredible live👍🏿💯
my hero
Two octaves up!
One of the best voices to ever come out of England, you're right about his range and the way he could change octaves was truly masterful
Magnifique
Such a big voice for a young kid. A voice beyond his years.
So true. You'd never believe a voice like that could come from that face!
@@everwake2689 Actually think his face is perfect for his voice -
very strong-looking!
Exactly. Dude was killing it! No "Lip Synch". No auto-tune. Straight-up LIVE and in your face. HUGE voice for a kid.
@@scottbaron121 🤗
Voice does not come out of the face. Look at the size of that chest, neck, and width of those shoulders. He's not fat either. He's built like a brick .... house. And got the musical talent to back it up. I know they got monitors in front of them but I doubt they could very much of themselves. The audience seems to be feeding back through the mics. Maybe they mic the audience and left them up too high when the screams began.
No dancing , NO smiles
Just an epic voice
1:08 - 01:13
What's wrong with smiling ? 😭
Could you imagine his voice with today's recording technology?!?! WOW! Search Chris Cornell, Tarja Turunen.
With an incredible band behind him. Just epic music making. Damn. To be in that audience
No In Ear Monitors. How were they able to hear themselves!!!!
Eric Burdon is a legend. He looks like he's only giving us half of what he really could. What a voice!
Legendario rockero inglés Erik Burdon
They slowed down the song
Heavily censored, everything had to be done under strick orders from Ed Sullivan
That's for sure!!
Damn straight on the legend part!
Fifty years later and this is still the most bluesy rock song ever concieved.
House of The Rising Sun is an old American folk song that has been covered by many artists.
This is The Animals arrangement of the song and the best of all the version, they did not write it.
Simo in Italia prego. Parla in italiano
There are tons of songs like that in American music. Been around for a long time but no one is certain who sang/wrote it first. It's especially the case with blues and bluegrass
They don't make music like this anymore.🤔
57 years ago 💕💋🎶
I can personally attest that every High School garage band(including mine, The Beau Street Runners, Franconia, Virginia) learned to play and perform this song when it came out for every single backyard party, sock hop and battle of the bands. And it was the first song I learned on electric guitar that had picked arpeggios. We played all The Animals songs. I saw this exact Ed Sullivan performance live on 10/18/1964, when I was 14...Thank you Lord for allowing me to see it again. Amen.
Ditto.. We must be twins .... I learned this song in 1964, as well.. Wooo
Learned this song back in 1978 and still play it on my guitar today. Nice hearing this live version
you guys are blessed to be alive back in those days
Isn't RUclips great
Still inspired a bunch of 16 year olds in Australia in 2006 as well also in our garage 👍🏻👍🏻
Eric is so relaxed here and killing it. Awesome. Dude isn't even breaking a sweat and sounds like freight train barreling down the track. Top 5 rock singer of all time. Thanks for the upload.
This is one of the best performances of a last century - Eric's voice wont get silenced by any theater full of screaming fans.
It's actually unbelievable how powerful his voice is. The drummer and the keyboard player also excellent.
Every time I see this I think "Where is that voice coming from?" and then a bit later I think "How did that kid have SUCH confidence? To sing like that and hit those notes?" Absolutely legendary performance.
I read a review decades ago that he was the "Draino voice of rock 'n roll." If you can find it, read his book: "I Used To Be An Animal But I'm Alright Now." Fascinating read.
His voice has sooo much soul in it.
Yes Eric sings so you fellet in your body and soul, he is one of a kind.

i'm 87, i listen to this song every day, in 1964, this song was introduced, it's a very popular!
23 year old Eric Burdon nails it. Thankfully CBS never erased these beautiful black & white videos. I wish I was in the audience.
I saw that when it originally aired as with the Beatles and the Stones debuts on Ed Sullivan. Classic and Eric’s voice was amazing.
How the hell did The Beatles and The Animals sing with those screaming fans still bamboozles me. Legends for a reason

Honestly incredible voice for his age. Whole band were way beyond their time.
I still consider this the first folk rock hit, something the Byrds often are credited for
The bass player, Charles "Chas" Chandler, discovered Jimi Hendrix and managed him.
Its an incredible voice at ANY age. I always thought it was inredible long before I ever saw what he looked like.
Wasn’t he like 22 or 23 at this time? I mean the amount of control he has over his voice is insane. There is no difference in tonality between the low and high parts. That’s so difficult to do. The Beatles are my favorite band of all time but there are a few of their songs when they are really belting it out that I can’t help but think “Eric Burdon could do this better”. Not that I would ever replace any original Beatles recordings. I just wish the guy covered some of their songs in the same way that Joe Cocker covered “help from my friends”. But part of the magic of that cover is switching the song to 3/4.
@@randymillhouse791 Before that it was Chas Chandler who discovered the lead guitarist in the Animals, Hilton Valentine. A very underrated guitarist and a key component of The Animals' distinctive sound.

That organ. The way the music takes you on that ride he warns against. The voice. That voice telling me not to do what he's done, etc.
I believed. NEVER doubted that voice.
Yup, he REALLY tells you not to and it's tear jerking stuff
Yes!. He's literally at the train station, on his way back to New Orleans, telling us to try to do what he can't.
The way Burdon sings it is both thrilling & scary. It's a masterpiece.
@@tothelighthouse9843 Great comment. It's just a shame that verse was missed out of this wonderful performance - no doubt due to time constraints imposed by the TV format - the one that starts "I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train". For me that line especially captures the dramatic tension at the heart of the song, pausing in midst of making his fateful decision - that inner conflict you just described - to tell us his story and sound a warning..
@@papercup2517 Yep, the guts of the song are really missing in this version, lol. It's not just the 'one foot on the platform' verse, but also the one that I find hits hardest--the one where the son sings about his father. The son who longs for his father, but has to admit what he knows--his father doesn't need his family, he only needs a suitcase & a trunk. The son who knows he's not enough for his father who is only ever really satisfied when he's drunk.
The vocals in this live version are spectacular tho.
