I really like when you make these "Series" reviews James. Your style of commentating is great, so when you're going through a list of movies in a series it just makes for an awesome time. I can sit back, have my morning coffee and learn about movies I may want to see since I don't watch that many. Thanks for all the great content coming out this October, it's absolutely insane and absolutely wanted/appreciated!
I felt Mary (Psycho II) warranted being mentioned. To me she was the highlight of the movie. Her unwavering effort to keep Norman on track and comforting him was the sweetest thing to me.
8:50 PSYCHO III was done simply because PSYCHO II made more than what the studios thought it would, so they wanted to "strike while the iron was hot". Anthony Perkins' condition for coming back was him directing and doing whatever he wanted. As pointed out in the RLM review, there are a lot of Hitchcock _and_ Argento (and general Giallo) references and stylistic visuals, so I think it was just Perkins having fun. PS: the "suicidal nun" was played by the same woman who played Christina in MOMMY DEAREST.
Here's an interesting yet unsettling trivia about Anthony Perkins. He was married to a woman named Berry Berenson-Perkins who had a few films of her own such as Remember my name with Anthony Perkins and Cat People with Malcolm McDowell. Berry Berenson-Perkins died in the Sept 11 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center. She was a passenger on flight 11. Her name is among the many listed in the Sept 11 memorial.
"Norman Bates' mother has been dead and buried in Greenlawn Cemetery for the past ten years!" "I helped Norman pick out the dress she was buried in. Periwinkle blue." "Well, if the women up there is Mrs. Bates... who's that woman buried out in Greenlawn Cemetery?"
I know times rough and you don't have much but if you happen to read this James, I actually really enjoy your solo written reviews on movies more than the Rental Reviews. Your style of commentating and your perspective on things is so fucking interesting and I've always loved that shit. Thx for keeping up with Monster Madness. Much love bro
Great video, James. I agree with how you ranked the films too. I've read the Robert Bloch books as well, so "Psycho" technically has two sets of good sequels.
You mean to tell me someone called PhatDookie420 didn't follow through with a commitment, leading to the disappointment of others? That's shocking. The internet is full of mystery.
Dude I've been waiting years for a Phantasm series review, or individual movies. Its crazy you guys haven't done it yet. Perfect Monster Madness material!
My favorite series. 1 and 4 are incredible. 2 was great 3 was corny and 5 was terrible especially with how much hype and suspense surrounded it's release. Based on the strength of 1,2 and 4 makes it my favorite series
Anthony Perkins was really good. I just saw all the movies and i love them. I only didn't really like 4, but even then.. 4 explained a lot of things about his past. It wasnt a bad movie, just not my taste. 3 was pretty strange but had cool moments and still wasn't horrible. 1 and 2 however are the real deal! REALLY good movies.
Richard Franklin, who directed Psycho II, was an Aussie director and a big fan of Hitchcock. I he actually met him when he was studying at the University of Southern California and they became . Two of his best films are Patrick, about a guy in hospital with telekenisis, and Road Games, which is basically Rear Window but set in a semi truck on the open road.
Psycho II is a fantastic film. Richard Franklin was a Hitchcock protege and they had met before, so it is highly likely that Hitch did approve of him making the sequel
I recently watched all of these and they're all pretty good to decent. I couldn't really say any of them are "bad" films. Which is surprising cause I hadn't seen the sequels prior and assumed they were garbage. They aren't. Anthony Perkins and the struggles of Norman Bates' journey actually made me appreciate the character a lot more.
Me and some friends actually sat down to watch Psycho a few years ago. Its always kind of strange sitting down to such an iconic and well known movie after so long. You sort of get an idea of what to expect based on all the famous scenes, but then you see it and... its just a good film. Its difficult to look at it the same way people in the 60's would have.
A good, concise, entertaining review of the four. You're the only human on the planet to turn off Psycho half-way through. Good story. I'm a Psycho 3 fan.
Yeah, while the sequel is surprisingly good, and well-written, it's fairly tame in the end. The book sequel on the other hand is totally wild, and would have made a movie that people would've talked about long after. Especially since nobody was doing meta stuff like that back in the 50s
@ Harperlarp - You should watch the second one. It's really good. The third one though is okay, but it seemed to have been made only to wrap up loose ends from the second film.
I remember when James did a Top 10 Movie Sequels That Aren't As Bad As Everyone Says. He said that, in contrast to Psycho II, both III and IV were movies that you should forget about. Here, he's far more positive about the fourth one, oddly enough.
Always pleased with the variety and quality of the content you make James. Nice to have a fan or horror keep the spirit alive while the genre gets its shit back together.
The movie Peeping Tom pre-dates Psycho by a few months and Alfred Hitchcock actually changed a few things in Psycho due to some of the criticisms Peeping Tom got.
What's up James? Thanks again for the years of entertainment an of course the abundance of laughter cinemassacre has brought in all it's forms. Keep it up bro, we are always here to watch.
Psycho is probably my favorite Hitchcock and thriller movie. The sequels aren't as good but I'm so glad we got to see Anthony Perkins continue with the character. He's so creepy but you still feel some sympathy for him. That last shot in the original, still gives chills. It's so good!
I've wanted to watch this series for years now but never got around it it. I need to actually do it some day soon. I love watching you talk about movies for the record. Seeing anyone talk about something that they have such a pure passion for is always fun.
i rarely leave comments but just wanted to say thank you for all the great videos. Over the years I have really enjoyed them. Its like having an old friend to reminisce with about childhood pleasure like NES and VHS movies. Thank you for all that you do!
Honestly I remember being 7 or 8 and marathoning this series at my grandparents house. Leaning up against the old broken heater they had the tv sitting on and all my cousins fussing at me to move out of the way. I just really was hooked lol! Note I would not let my kid watch these until older but watching this and the Night of the demons with my big cousins really set up my taste in films
Jokes aside, I doubt he just threw this together at the last minute. He's probably had this on the list for months now. It's coincidental. Though when he came out with "Re:view" at the same time as RLM, it was a little comical. It would be nice to see them connect because I think both channels have a lot to offer each other.
James, did you know that has a Norman Battes reference, in the film The Orient Express (1974) from Agatha Crhistie??? RedLetterMedia did an interesting retrospective review on Psycho series on their Re-View like James. They generally liked the sequels for second one being surprisingly good, third for stylistic colors, and fourth for drama'n stuff.
I remember catching a marathon on TNT in muy early teens and loving them all. I'm not sure I'd seen psycho before then so I saw it as a series. The entire story played well and had a great ending.

Ok i always wondered would Norman even care about the money . Me personally i dont think so he was just to Psycho to care. My introduction to this movie franchise was part 4 i really like it as a kid then i seen the orignal and like you i was just really underwhelmed didnt think much of it. Then i watched it again later in life and loved it. Norman Bates is probably one of the top 10 psychologically deprived characters of all time . Great review love Monster Madness.

Bates Motel has some missteps here and there, but it is a surprisingly excellent show for fans of Psycho. If you like the Psycho series, you should definitely give it a watch if you haven't already.

Woody Woodpecker and a guitar? Reminds me of an AVGN episode with Bugs Bunny.

@@jojoface4940 Why?

Psycho 2 is great.
Criminally underrated
Actually more unsettling than the original.

Saw it the other day. Sad that more people haven’t talked about it. It’s brilliant.
I prefer it over the original
