One of the few cases where we would be like "it's completely fine to completely ignore the source material" and of course its the one case where they pull out all the stops to be true to the original.
Often both we the fans and creators are to black and white when it comes to the topic of "the source material!!!". It's about as over dramatized as the drinkers "the message!!!". Either people go all hard core it's got to be spot on with the source material, or some wildly ridiculous adaptation, but if it turns out good all is forgiven, well by most. If I had to hazard a guess I think they will keep much of the vibe of the first season, and that's a good thing. I'm sure there will be some questionable choices made in the telling of the story, or "the message!!!", but overall I'm looking forward to it.
@@quor2243it’s pretty simple actually. They changed and added stuff to the first season to be more woke because the original game was pretty based. They don’t need to do that to the second season because the second game was already woke as shit due to Niel Drunkmam
amen. I mean you can tell with the last us part 1 was meant to be a stand-alone, but because of it's success they did what Hollywood does and made a second game.
Exactly. A more interesting idea would have been a prequel based around the "20 years later" time skip after the death of Joel's daughter. Instead of an unnecessary sequel, chock full of THE MESSAGE.
@@Adam_Bombz Totally agree. I think it would have been great if it had been a prequel which focused on the years Joel and Tommy spent surviving together. Part of the game’s conflict could be Joel sinking further into darkness and Tommy trying his hardest to pull him back out of it for both their sakes.
It’s what killed it for most people I recommend the show too. Almost did for me but I like seeing the cordeceps virus so I kept at it, but even then it lack a whole lot of it.
A good show I watched was Helluva boss which is the best I've seen in recent years. They clearly have gay characters(if not bisexual) but, it's part of the character still telling a good story without pushing an agenda. Season 1 was good but, the ending to season 2 was disappointing. It's accessible on RUclips by the channel viviepop.
Ahh The Last of Us where the priority in a post apocalyptic world isn't food, water, or survival but gender politics. Exactly what people worry about at the end of the world.

The only “sequel” that would’ve worked for TLOU franchise would’ve been a prequel game following Joel & Tommy during the 20 years before the main story. All the brutal shit they had to do and go through. Would’ve been so interesting.
@@ThatBlueSkull Yeah this. Much more interesting to have "Last of Us" be a setting, with each title focusing on new events and cast. Could even one day track outside the USA. The fact the walking dead at least for the first couple seasons managed to be a better more enjoyable adaption of something much more niche on a lower budget should tell you something about the state of Hollywood.
Big disagree with that, the show fell off a cliff the moment they revealed that everyone was actually infected, like what the hell is the point then? season 1 was great, the finale of season 1 was garbage and kept being garbage after that.
I've seen so many comments of newer viewers who never played the games say "I can't wait to see what they do with Joel and Ellie in season 2". Oh boy are they in for something 😂
HBO is about to release a show with an insufferable girl boss at a point in time when the country is screaming that it is tired of the insufferable girl boss. Don't worry, it'll be fine.
Crazy huh? I was thinking the same thing. This season is being released just as woke culture is finally on the decline. It'll be interesting to see how this goes, I'm sure the majority of people who are unable to think for themselves will fall in line, as they usually do.
@@brainspout3447can’t wait for this woke thing to be over. Let’s be honest it was just corporate marketing like greenwashing decades ago. @mister-pinkman That's fair. But then if we're being honest, Bella looks like there's something...wrong with her? Doesn't exactly exude capability or intelligence.
The last of us part 2 had one major flaw that I can NEVER get over. Any doctor that immediately goes to: "Let's kill the only living sample we have access to." doesn't deserve the title of doctor. Especially in a world ending scenario like Last of us part 1. No matter what the second game said, Joel was right, the doctors were wrong.
It was a fake decision brought on by poor writing. A "to make the plot happen" moment. TLOU 1 was full of things like that. As you say, no real scientist would want to eviscerate Elle to find a cure. That's voodoo, not science.
Yea. Not to mention the lore is filled with information about the group not being anywhere near a cure & strongly hinting at the fact the Fireflies were internally & externally justifying their deplorable actions under the false premise of working towards a cure. It offered moral propaganda & allowed them to live with themselves while being terrorists to everyone else around them.
That’s just wrong? The option were potential cure or no cure and in the world they were in I can’t imagine the desperation for a cure they had Joel was NOT in the right for killing EVERYONE in the hospital including the only people in that hospital that could make a cure lmao you are just wrong
Honestly the one good thing TLOU2 did was show everybody that The Game Awards are rigged considering it "won" GOTY over games like DOOM Eternal and Ghosts of Tsushima.

Naughty Dog’s greatest skill is taking perfectly good IP and stripping it of everything the fans loved about it. I still mourn the death of Jak and Daxter from time to time. That game was transcendent and groundbreaking at the time, just as much as TLOU was. What a shame…

Hated that the writers went back in part 2 and acted like Ellie’s “ok” was her being naive and not fully understanding the weight of what Joel was saying.
3:05 It was in fact. Neil Druckmann was not the primary writer on the first game and the behind the scenes story is he underminded the woman that did while claiming to be a feminist. Also he wrote himself in as the ladies man in part 2.
I wish I could find the info, but I remember hearing about how much of a hate boner Neil had for Joel in that he wanted him violently killed off in the first game in no less than 4 instances but had to be reigned in by his colleagues. Wouldn't surprise me if he still has a circlejerk session watching Joel getting into the golf club.
@ He was not the “true mind” or whatever that exactly means to you. If you mean main story writer, he was not either. Straley worked on the ps3 game as Game Director, focused on leading gameplay sectors, far from influencing the story, although Druckmann stated their job relation to be “sort of like a marriage”, where they did have many opposing ideas but reached the same game vision in the end. You are just wrong, and trying to convince yourself the two games were not from the same “mind” by attributing all to someone else for the first game is just foolish and ignorant. Do better.
Considering they already completely ruined it in season one in every conceivable way..... no. No it is not. In any fucking capacity. That IS NOT JOEL OR ELLIE. At fucking all.
This would be the best outcome. Unfortunately as Drinker said, it's Neil's baby and he will never admit that he was wrong. Let's just watch the "vocal minority" get pissed off again.
Season one, literally made a whole episode about two dudes in love that was barely implied in the game, thus taking out one of the best characters entirely from the game before we even got the characters interacting with him. I think it’s safe to say “the message” was already heavy handed in season one
Druckman logic: make a girl who’s the key to everything. Put her in a situation where she could literally save the world by finding a good man, find a safe place to settle down, and have Mormon / Catholic levels of kids. So naturally we’re going to turn her into a lesbian girl boss.
I skipped The Last of Us originally like how I skipped K-Pax when friends wanted to watch something. These videos validate my choice further every time.
The Last of us Game did NOT, absolutely DID NOT, need a sequel. Its original ending left everything exactly where it should have been. And my goodness we did not need a tv show from it.
This. A hundred times. The only reason the sequel exists is to shame the people who sided with Joel in the first one and for Neil Druckman to push his weird ideology and fetishes that he couldn't push in the first one (thanks to Bruce Straley, I imagine).
@@thibaldus3if you sided with Joel at the end of the first game then you played a much more boring game than I did. To the point I would question why you find it any good?
@@kevtb874 Almost everyone did. Killing your adoptive daughter in the POSSIBLE eventuality that you can make a cure? When it's shown that others died from the procedure and that you've still failed to make it? That is enough for me to side with Joel. There is even an argument for letting Ellie grow up and have her own children to whom she could pass on her immunity. Of course it's conveniently and cowardly ignored by making Ellie a lesbian, but frankly I think that finding a strapping young lad to have a few romps with and having your own children is still better than dying on an operating table. So get to it Eliie. In the memory of Joel.
@@kevtb874 Man, honestly you make me sick. Anyone with real heart would side with Joel. I'm going to turn the question around to you and ask you the same thing. Why would you find it any good if you didn't side with Joel? That was the entire purpose of the story, to shows Joel's struggle.
They could easily fix tlou2 by making Abby more likable and charismatic, making her more conflicted with what she did, and by making Joels death less brutal. I can imagine a good actress going a long way to making Abby bearable. Also frontload her character building rather than try to do it after everyone hates her. I doubt they will take even those simple steps. I suspect the writers are too busy huffing their own farts to want to take basic steps.
I had the same feeling watching TLOU2 as I watched TLJ. They both did my boys dirty. johnson and druckman, How do these morons land these director jobs? FFS
why should she be conflicted about what she did? Joel was a mass murderer who killed dozens of her friends and most importantly her father while also sabotaging the possible cure. From her POV there is not a lot to be conflicted about, Joel has it coming the way he then did
@darthbroda you're saying that as if Joel was the only killer in the entire world of TLOU when there are crooks far worse than him. Not to mention that the Fireflies were all but perfectly fine with killing his foster daughter when they could have looked for other alternatives that would leave her alive, like using her blood. She doesn't get to have the moral high ground
I loved everything about Abby’s story, and a less brutal death for Joel would have been dumb. But you’re right about the sequence of events. We should have gotten to know Abby more at the start of the game than halfway through.
Bella Ramsey always reminds me of "Odo" from Star Trek DS9, her face appears both fake and somehow unfinished, like an artist who does a quick template sketch and then just... never finishes it. Oddly enough her personality kind of matches that too. an unfortunate truth.
I'm seeing it, it will be like what happened in The Walking Dead when Negan appeared the first time The difference is that Negan was a charismatic villain, and he didn't kill Rick

It's amazing to see the difference between the fallout tv show and this. Fallout show had an original story which stood on its own, not to mention well cast with talented actors who actually cared about actually making something good.

Not really. Other than some pacing problems and a couple of questionable choices by main characters, the story as a whole was fine. People just salty because Joel didn't go down in a "blaze of glory." Like some hero symbol.
@@kooken58 Strongly disagree. Yeah, Joel's death was stinging, but the core problem was the pacing. Having to play as Ellie for 3 in-game days before encountering Abby only to flash back to 3 days prior and play AS Abby up to and against Ellie. Frankly, the game would have been better if it took the Sonic Adventure 2 route of having Abby and Ellie be their own separate stories.
@NotSpecialDude that is a game problem though, one that I tend to agree with, but not necessarily one that is related to the overall story and something the show can avoid.
I only know one person who adored the second game. It was this 16 year old kid in my class who never played the first game, but always talked about how much the second game was a masterpiece. One day I basically told him the game was a massive middle finger to fans of the first game.
@Laughy-Flaaffy I get why people hate the game. I hated it too the first time I played it. But going back to it I changed my opinion. its also sold over 10 million copies, so what you're saying isnt accurate.
Bella Ramsey is absolutely hilarious as Ellie. Ellie in the game was made to grow in the game. She was naive and sweet and became a complete badass. Ellie in the game showed emotion. Bella Ramsey has the same look for every emotion. You can’t tell if she’s angry, sad, happy or confused. She has the same look for everything. And when you point it out, people get mad. She is like Kristen Stewart in the Twilight Movies.
@ I’m saying her facial expressions stay the same. Her voice obviously changes but her face has one look.lol. I didn’t mind her in GOT because she’s a child actor and I usually give them a pass.
That's the most ridiculous thing I ever heard in my life the game does not hate fans is the other way around because explain to me why the so-called fans went after that girl that played Abby amazed the rest of the fans look very bad in comparison
Ellie is supposed to be cute & charming which is what endears her to Joel and reignites his fatherly side. Nobody would want to die for that annoying Bella Ramsey gremlin or care to protect her lol, it’s unrealistic.
It's unrealistic and creepy for an old man to care for a 14 year old because she's cute lol...that is not why Joel started caring for Ellie...the long trip with her and getting to know her made him care for her.
"At least they're trying something new and bold, they're trying to say something instead of just playing it safe!" People used the same nonsense argument to defend Halloween Ends, too. Problem is that trying to say something and trying to do something original and unexpected means nothing if the product ends up being terrible and the thing they're trying to say is actually incredibly stupid. Original or unexpected does not mean good, people keep forgetting this.
Yeah the last of us 2 was the biggest waste in talent, an I.P. money and resources spent on that game could have definitely went to something better. Alot of people harped on Days gone and compared it to TLOU 1 and said tlou was better but i guarantee had Days gone 2 got greenlight, then it would have been 100x's better than tlou 2 which was the worst game ive ever played. So sad too cause the first one was pretty decent, and the second one, graphically looked amazing, gameplay was refined and smooth but the writting all the way through was complete cringe all the way through. The whole first half of the game was a damn lesbian dating simulator, that's all anyone talked about was ellie is gay this, she kissed a girl that blah blah blah nobody cares what about the Zombies, are they dying out are they mutating or getting stronger? They spend so much time focusing on "ellie is gay" they barley touch on anything else for the vast majority of the game. Wasted potention for sure
TLOU2 is an absolute abomination of a video game. The story is dishonest, manipulative, and exploitative just for the sake of Neil Druckman’s moral superiority and lecturing. The game is hostile to its own fanbase and revels in upsetting them. Hell, they even lied and misled the audience in the trailer, when they swapped a line said by the asian guy with Joel saying it. The sad part is that the gameplay itself is amazing. It is fun and engaging. The controls and character animations are fluid. Imagine if it was paired with a story that was written in good faith, and continued with the characters that the fans genuinely loved.
I recommend a TLOU2 video by Closer Look where he analyses every minute detail that makes the story sucky and then rewrites it in a way that makes it beautiful and tragic instead of ridiculous and idiotic.
Eh, I'd disagree. While there are certainly aspects of the story from the second game that I think would be better if changed, it does a lot of things really well. The point of the second game was lost on a lot of people. And it's somewhat understandable because it's a pretty deep cut. But I'll try to explain here: As the player the writers wanted you to understand that the world of the game is unbelievably convoluted. It is not good versus bad. No one is the "good" guy or gal. Everyone is just trying to survive. Which is exactly what that type of environment WOULD be like. And it succeeds incredibly well with that because it forces you into the shoes of the perceived antagonist and makes you consider why these people end up making the decisions they have made. It's actually really interesting on a story telling level if you divorce yourself from the arbitrary love for Joel as a character from the first game/story. Sure, it sucks to see him killed. But that's the point. It makes you heavily invested in a story of revenge only to ultimately make you question your own thought process entirely as a means of understand what these people really are going through. And ultimately if the revenge is worth it. TLOU2 is a very, very deep, human experience, overall. Now, that doesn't mean it's not without issues. The whole cult section and a good amount of Abby's playthrough felt forced along with some of the personal aspects of each character. But overall the game and the story are actually quite good. You just have to look at it from a difficult perspective that story tellers often do not give to their audience. I do agree that the blatant trailer manipulation and studio pandering is/was a problem though. Super shady for such a beloved IP to do some of that stuff during the launch window.
I'm so excited to be reminded of why Joel was so evil for protecting Ellie against people who wanted to murder and dissect her against her own will. That'll be fun.
IIRC the apologists for that position say that dissecting her would have provided a cure for the cordyceps and saved the world, and that Joel knew this when he rescued her and killed them all.
@@Ensign_Cthulhu i bet none of them had a problem in actually impersonating Joel and doing it in the first game. i also guess that after the first game was released none actually expressed criticism about that.
Pedro worked well in Unbearable Weight of Incredible Talent where he was the eccentric rich businessman. When he was having fun, the audience was having fun Too bad that's not how he's used
I've been saying this since Game of Thrones, Pedro Pascal is a charming actor, but he is not a *good* actor. He only works when he is being himself or being completely devoid of character.
I respectfully disagree that TLoUp2 is Neil's baby. The sequel felt like a bunch of man-hating millennials seized the writer's room and tied Neil to a chair and coerced him to put his signature on their script. I can scarcely believe that the same person who wrote the first one wrote the second one outside of extreme duress. That's just me, though.
Thats the little girl boss from GOT that slew the zombie giant, so naturally like the rest of them from GOT they will be shoving her all over the place.
You know you fucked up when you tried making a sympathetic character, but everyone hates them and wants them to die the whole time and when your character has a chance to kill them your character doesn't and walks away even though you definitely wanted that other character dead. The writers of The Last of Us 2 are so tone deaf it's actually baffling.

3:05 to clarify since i know Drinker isn’t big in gaming knowledge. The reason it felt like a completely new team was behind was literally the reason. Every major Naughty Dog head has left the company years before with Bruce Straley, Naughty Dog veteran of 20 years and the Co-Director of Last of Us 1, leaving the Company aswell in 2017. Meaning that the Last of Us part 2 was 100% all Neil Drunkman. No Amy Henning who he can just take her credit and no Bruce Straley who keeps him in check. That’s why LoU2 felt so alienated to the first game.
Why not? He’s good tbh it got to a point it was like he’s in everything but delivered everytime he’s not like Chris Pratt or The Rock where they ended up being nearly in every movie at one point and didn’t do nearly as good, Chris Pratt is decent but not Pedro Pascal.
You need a STRONG Ellie if you're gonna kill Joel. The show does not have a strong Ellie - the show's Ellie relies heavily on her relationship with the show's Joel.
What pisses me off about tlou2 is Abby's dad. He is the entire motivation for abby and he isn't even a complete character. You're telling me that man that would save a zebra that was trapped and injured in a world where food is scarce is the same man that would kill a 14 year old girl minutes within meeting her to "produce a cure" without looking for alternatives. I was expecting them to use tlou2 as a way to explain why they he was in a hurry but they didn't If it was up to me, I'd make abby have a brother that was very recently bitten but hadn't turned when ellie came in, he convinced the fireflies to let him operate as soon as possible thinking she would die anyway but operating early might save his son. For abby, she did not only lose her brother but she lost her father, when all he did was try to save him. And maybe after he died we could've had abby go to his room/home/office and seen a vision board of everything he knew and how he plans to make a cure, even if it is vague or something just to show us he did have a plan.
yes but at that point Abby'd have realized that Joel and his dad acted how they acted for the same reasons, which'd have made her think twice about her right to have her revenge.
That is more believable retcon than what I have seen Naughty Dog did with TLOU: Part II The original game, from what I read into the story, still has the ugly truth about the Cordyceps vaccine that Fireflies are so desparate in procuring, is not a cure but weaponized disease against Fedra settlements and anyone else that doesn't join forces with Fireflies. The TV Show wasn't subtle about this either, just word it differently. And that's why Marlene is kept alive for that purpose, but the fireflies are this close to mutiny, had Joel and Ellie not arrived at Salt Lake City.

One of the few cases where we would be like "it's completely fine to completely ignore the source material" and of course its the one case where they pull out all the stops to be true to the original.
And you know they'll use this as an excuse not to keep to the source material for future projects. It's a full circle of stupidity.

Bruce Straley is the true mind behind TLOU.
@ He was not the “true mind” or whatever that exactly means to you.
If you mean main story writer, he was not either. Druckman logic: make a girl who’s the key to everything. Put her in a situation where she could literally save the world by finding a good man, find a safe place to settle down, and have Mormon / Catholic levels of kids. So naturally we’re going to turn her into a lesbian girl boss.
But humanity caused the fungal apocalypse with their Global Warming TM, so they should not be saved (according to Cuckman).

I loved everything about Abby’s story, and a less brutal death for Joel would have been dumb. But you’re right about the sequence of events. We should have gotten to know Abby more at the start of the game than halfway through.

Anyone who knows anything about the source material has a bad feeling about this. Anyone who knows about Joel in 1 was likely too smart to watch season 1.
Yeah, that was what I did.
@kooken58 this is legit the same terrible argument TLJ fans made about Luke Skywalkwrs lmao
@NotSpecialDude that is a game problem though, one that I tend to agree with, but not necessarily one that is related to the overall story and something the show can avoid.
You know, I never thought of it that way. Last of Us Part 2 really is The Last Jedi of video games.
Bruh Bella Ramsay as Ellie was such a dumb choice. She’s got the acting range of a potato.
and looks like one honestly
But but she is non binary so its all good
@M11-t4h Yeah...not entirely untrue.
Wow. Like the potato that goes with everything? Cook em mash em stick em in a stew? Fry em? Poor choice of metaphor.
She legitimately did a good job in the show especially in the later episodes.
I think it's gonna be funny when Druckmann realizes mass audiences hate it and there's no gaming media to run cover for it
Unlikely, the asshat will probably prevail and be upstage, despite everyone wanting this to fail
Lmao. You're serious and that makes it even funnier @jefp65
There's still plenty of media that will run cover for him.
It’s obviously not the best they could come up with. But she checks “boxes”. So that’s obviously how that happened.

"but she was in Game of Thrones and she was good in that" says every person who overlooks that she also had no emotin in that either.

EXACTLY!!!! So very true!
i didn't hear people complaining about saving Ellie from the "scientists" when the first game was praised by everyone.
"At least they're trying something new and bold, they're trying to say something instead of just playing it safe!"
People used the same nonsense argument to defend Halloween Ends, too.
The Last of Us 2 is still a really fun game to play. The story may not be everyone's thing but I enjoy the gameplay.
The girl from Stranger Things and The Whale was the perfect choice for Ellie. I think that in the latter her character was even called Ellie.

Agree 💯 I still play it because of the fantastic gameplay. Well that and because I got it for 4 bucks 😂
I recommend a TLOU2 video by Closer Look where he analyses every minute detail that makes the story sucky and then rewrites it in a way that makes it beautiful and tragic instead of ridiculous and idiotic.
There was no moral superiority or even lecturing in The Last of Us part two, that was kind of the point.
Eh, I'd disagree. While there are certainly aspects of the story from the second game that I think would be better if changed, it does a lot of things really well. The point of the second game was lost on a lot of people. And it's somewhat understandable because it's a pretty deep cut. But I'll try to explain here:
As the player the writers wanted you to understand that the world of the game is unbelievably convoluted.

Bella Ramsey looks like she's 11 and I cant be sold on her as Ellie no matter how hard they try.

I was expecting them to use tlou2 as a way to explain why they he was in a hurry but they didn't
If it was up to me, I'd make abby have a brother that was very recently bitten but hadn't turned when ellie came in, he convinced the fireflies to let him operate as soon as possible thinking she would die anyway but operating early might save his son. For abby, she did not only lose her brother but she lost her father, when all he did was try to save him. And maybe after he died we could've had abby go to his room/home/office and seen a vision board of everything he knew and how he plans to make a cure, even if it is vague or something just to show us he did have a plan.
That is such a good suggestion
You're expecting too much of drugman. That mofo just wanted to shove his agenda up the libs' ass.
yes but at that point Abby'd have realized that Joel and his dad acted how they acted for the same reasons, which'd have made her think twice about her right to have her revenge.
That is more believable retcon than what I have seen Naughty Dog did with TLOU: Part II
The original game, from what I read into the story, still has the ugly truth about the Cordyceps vaccine that Fireflies are so desparate in procuring, is not a cure but weaponized disease against Fedra settlements and anyone else that doesn't join forces with Fireflies.
The TV Show wasn't subtle about this either, just word it differently.
And that's why Marlene is kept alive for that purpose, but the fireflies are this close to mutiny, had Joel and Ellie not arrived at Salt Lake City.
Write that book please!
