Drinker claimed before that he quit by episode 4, and only loosely follows it to dunk on it. So i imagine this only includes things he actually finished watching.
@@Sickofdrawingcowboys717 Yep. The Emmys have always been a "movie recommendation event" for my dad, we'd buy and watch the movies together and they were generally good. Now I watch the drinker's recommended stuff and go off that. His taste is usually on point.
@unknownvagrant6851 I would argue this is a very unrealistic and limited view of all 2024 had to offer. People may not like YMS, but that man really puts the work in when talking about best and worst of the year on a RUclips channel, and I'm not saying that's what I would go off. It just seems that you have put a very small limit on the media you consume is all I'm saying 🤷♂️
Thank You Drinker for keeping it simple and to the pint. Oh. Point. Seriously thanks again for a year of great videos and fun commentary. Here’s to 2025.
Honorable mention to Blue Eye Samurai. A diverse and inclusive show that doesn’t make a big deal of the fact that it’s diverse and inclusive that actually tells a compelling story with likable characters.
I'm so happy you mentioned One Life. The story of Nicholas Winton and the children he saved is such a special one. The fact that none of those people knew him because he didn't want recognition for his actions is a quality missing from most people in today's day and age. Sir Anthony Hopkins portrayed him immaculately.
I hope to watch One Life someday, but I really can't stomach any more WW2 holocaust stories until Israel's finished being a hypocrite with their own jen-e-side.
@@JasonFarrelldude…you’re welcome to come visit Israel and see for yourself not just watch news. War doesn’t equal genocide. If you’d like to hear it from Arab Israelis and not just ones like me, happy to share some accounts
@@JasonFarrellAre you aware that October 7th happened, which was an act of war that included the casual murder of infants? If you start a war, you get one. If you murder babies, your babies will get murdered. It's the most anti-Semitic double standard to say that Jews are "hypocrites" to match the savagery of their primitive, bloodthirsty enemies. Unfortunately, that's how wars are won.
The Wild Robot definitely should’ve gotten a place on the best of list. A heartfelt DreamWorks production the likes of which you don’t see too often these days.
I’d completely forgotten that _Shogun_ had even come out in 2024. In my mind I guess I kind of sorted it into the halcyon period before Marvel and Disney Star Wars
I was literally rewatching clips while bored at work when I saw the date in the description and full on had a Mandela Effect moment as I realized, "Oh yeeeeaaaaaahhhhhh, that did come out this year."
You might be thinking of a movie with a similar premise called The Last Samurai, released in *checks calendar*... TWO THOUSAND AND THREE, WHAT IN THE HOLY F?!!! It seriously feels like it was released around 10 years ago.
The Penguin was one of the few things that actually surprised me on 2024 due to how good it was. And the most mind-blowing part?It was written by a woman. I hope it sets the example on others to prioritize the story before the message.
@AnemoiaGuy Never insinuated something like that. I simply meant what writers can achieve regadless of sex when not bound to the message. Cause let's be frank, women like Kennedy,Anita Sarkeesian, the Acolyte production team have unfortunately scarred the idea that women can be talented. Hence why I hope more talented women like LeFranc come forward to shake that reputation off.
@@AnemoiaGuyI think he meant that the female writers assigned to comic book adaptations lately have been woke feminists like the ones that did acolyte and she hulk, so it's a nice change to see a normal woman do a comic book adaptation
Many excellent women writers. The problem is when they are given the job because they are diverse, feminist rather than actual talent, partly because they don't have the talent, and partly because it becomes a vehicle for their political views. So maybe you loathe Trump, fine, no issue with that, but having (as Doctor Who did for example) a very very slightly disguised Trump as your bad guy, usually way OTT, you alienate half your audience automatically, plus some of those who might actually not like Trump either but want decent sci fi not preaching.
Watched One Life in a small cinema room here in Brazil (movie wasn't marketed at all over here) and man, people had to be consoled out of their seats, such an impactful piece
I’ve been trying to figure out how to articulate my feelings about season two of Arcane, being both overwhelmed and overwhelmed at the same time, and you hit the nail on the head.
@@Skyhigh864 How about the fact that his entire existence is pointless, if not for Sideways Hats controlling the United States, to deny Unrestricted Immigration of German Children, and Women as far back as 1939 pushed before Congress? Finally someone and WHO ELSE but Drinker to touch on ArcaneS2. What a rushed piece of beautiful animation that was! Time and event jumps through powerpoint slides, script that is confusing by 2nd episode and ending that felt like there will be more and there should be more for Vi and Jinx but nope..that was it. Thank you!
There is actually an artbook of Jinx and Ekko preparing to help Piltover to fight the Noxus even showing them bonding together again and it's also part of deleted scenes. Also, the scene of Vi is suddenly re-joining Caitlyn and her army also too rush!
I cant believe they went down the “band against the common evil!” as the conclusion to season. The disparity between topside and zaun was completely overlooked from the first season.
They could have gotten another season out of it, easily. The events of Episode 6 would have easily worked as a season finale and would give all the plotlines leading up to it more time to breathe. Probably still keep the events of Episode 7 in there so we don't lose sight of Jayce and Ekko for too long. But Episodes 8 and 9 felt like they simply glossed over arcs that needed 3 times the attention they got, including; Vi and Jinx's resolution, Jinx and Ekko's reunion, the Piltover vs. Zaun conflict, Viktor's villain arc, Jayce's redemption, Mel's journey from captive to accomplished mage, and more. I don't know if I'd throw Arcane into the disappointment category like Drinker did, I really did enjoy it through the first 7 episodes. But I will agree that it didn't live up to season 1. Hopefully whoever's in charge trusts the showrunners enough to give future projects the time they need to tell good stories.
@@benmoore8809if you watched enough Netflix shows, you know one of few things will happen after first great season of a tv show. Either it gets bumrushed like daredevil, or gets completely ridiculous like House of cards, or simply gets cancelled when they realise that they have to pay the actors more because the show is doing so good, like Santa clarita diet. Arcane somehow got a mix of all 3 because we can’t call any of it an Arc more like a small hill that everyone ripped through to get to the end. Just as an example, I’m watching The Madness and you can see that it’s a limited series because they couldn’t get a full 2 season contract from anyone on the show.
You have captured in words what my wife and I felt about Arcane S2. We adored the first season but were just so confused and lost in the second. Incredible animation, voice acting, and cool set pieces (THERES NOTHING COOLER THAN THE DJENTY BATTLE BETWEEN WARWICK AND JINX!), but too many things were introduced with no payoff for a final season. Very odd choices.
I'm glad to hear the Drinker say he was confused - for a while thought I either hadn't been paying enough attention, or was just too stupid to understand half of what was going on. I did reach the conclusion it was mostly a pacing issue - and I actually thought the final episode was pretty decent - it was nice that they brought it back to Jayce and Viktor at the end, after a season that mostly seemed obsessed with Caitlyn and Ambessa, two of the most boring characters, IMO - and also spent a whole lot of time with Mel for what amounted to nothing.
I feel like they forgot about the non game playing watchers. I knew nothing about the games and loved season 1. In season 2 there were characters with no backstop given and also storyline like Victor's void was not explained well. Mel's storyline was a mess and I got to the point I was fed up seeing her on screen because everything with the black rose just confused me.
Drinker's Recommends of 2024: 1) Shōgun 2) The Penguin 3) One Life 4) Dune Part Two 5) Star Trek Unification And yes, one of these is actually a 7 minute short; turns out there are years so awful and creatively bankrupt that you can't even make a genuine Top 5 without going through some hoops.
His list is terrible. This year we got. The Substance, La Chimera, Flow, A Different Man, Aurora, Challengers, Kneecap, Nosferatu among others. You’ll find lots of good films if you’re not a fraud hack like Drinker
TV: Interview With The Vampire, Baby Reindeer, English Teacher, Pachinko, Industry, Somebody Somewhere, X-Men '97, Hacks, Say Nothing Movies: Flow, The Wild Robot, Memoir of a Snail, Anora, Sing Sing, Challengers, Didi, Conclave, Evil Does Not Exist, Robot Dreams, The Beast, The Substance I could keep going but I'll leave it at that
My biggest frustration with arcane is that the story was really only about 4-5 characters with a class clash dynamic in the background in season 1, only for season 2 to become avengers endgame level of stakes. Like wtf we went from the tale of two sisters to multiverse level threats so fast, just kinda came out of nowhere, even though there were hints in the first season. Still ok overall though
It really does feel "Marvel-esq" in Season 2. There are like 2-3 good episodes, and I do enjoy Viktor as a character, but the rest is just slop ngl. (in s2, s1 was more consistently good)
My dissapointment is probably Caitlyn. I thought she's gonna full dictator mode after being selected as General and also on revenge mode to Jynx for her mom but nope, one single word from Vi, "Cupcake" changed her mind and be good again. Also, that Black Rose storyline is just a filler to make Mel having a mage power because Mel was very useless in Season One despite being manipulator and being hot. I was expected her to die on explotion in Season One finale because if you look again, she was the one who are the closest of the bomb when the bomb was literally behind her! How did she survive? Also, she lowkey looks like Shuri from Black Panther with that new look.
I'd be curious to see if Nosferatu would have made this list if it had been produced a few weeks from now. I'd especially find it funny if Bill Skarsgard wound up headlining a best AND worst film of the year.
I'm with you on arcane season 2. As i was watching it i had an impression that they had a script full of awesome stuff and realised "oh crap, this is too much" and just started tearing out pages and whole acts of story so they could fit it in one season. I still enjoyed season 2, but wish they would have made the decision to make a season 3 so the characters and big events would've had some time to grow and make an impression.
I feel you. I can tell they really wanted to make art. What Arcane fans have picked up on in the last month or so is crazy, but I think it's clear that powers above them made them cut it down.
Yeah I was watching this season and getting completely lost half the time, my first thought was thinking I'm just dumb and not understanding, but no, the season was actually a mess making everything confusing and hard to follow
I definitely still enjoyed it, but the narrative and general pacing were certainly weaker than the first season. I still don’t exactly get the whole subplot with the black girl and her magic abilities, and it definitely feels like Viktor’s entire arc should have been stretched out across at least another season. This season should have ended around act 2 and they should have essentially fleshed out act 3 into its own full season imo.
I honestly really liked the "rushed" season 2. I am so done with these meandering series that never end that stretch their stories and concepts until they are unwatchable. E.g: The Mandalorian
I completely agree about Arcane S2. They needed more than 1 season to wrap up and develop all the character and plot threads they set up in the first season. The ideas and developments themselves in S2 I thought were actually good, but felt bland and rushed; they ended up just telling us what happened, rather than letting us watch the characters narrative journey through to the conclusion. They never had time to develop Ambessa at all as a villain (unlike Silco, who was an amazing character), show how Jinx came to change at the beginning of the season, really develop or explain the Jace/Viktor plotline or give it a satisfying conlcusion, develop Caitlyn's arc to authoritarianism and back, etc etc etc. The first season was one of the best single seasons of TV I've seen in a long time, so overall just really sad they didn't have the show run for longer and flesh out the conclusion in the way the characters deserved.
Jinx ended season 1 as a complete psycho, but then season 2 rushed her right back to being a mostly level-headed and good person. My wife was really annoyed at how different she was without enough time to mold her into being that different.
Talking thrones dissected it thoroughly. . Very troubled production history. . The HBO accountants didn't provide enough money for 10 episodes and only provided for 8, and instead allocated the money to true detective. And the writers strike happened so the show couldn't be condensed into 8 episodes. And it shows.
Who did leave? I know Ash Brannon did, who I think was a big part of why S1 was so great, I mean he wrote and co-directed Toy Story 2. Was there others that left as well?
Each act of season 2 should have been 4 episodes instead of 3 at the very least. I still enjoyed a lot of it, but the ending was definitely rushed. 7/10 for me and season 1 was a solid 8.5/10
Sigh, well knowing how Netflix is these days, especially with how they treat animated shows, it's safe to assume the showrunners wanted get out of the way before Netflix swings the ax on them.
@@liamphibia Arcanes first season was a huge success, why should netflix axe it right there when making season 2 at all? That one was not on Netflix...i enjoyed it, animation is insanely good, but compared to the writing of season one...big difference.
Season 1 had such a great and tightly woven narrative that I would have been fine if it had ended there. The second season was rushing through to many plot points, which is odd since the first season covered more in the same amount of time. They should of made Jayce and Ekkos story run parallel with the rest of the plot, because it slowed down Jynx and Vi's arc (which should of added quality but they didn't add any complexity). Jynx should have been a mess throughout the whole season, only improving at the end. Not this up and down with Isha (who was a throwaway and distraction from Jynx's arc). Vi should have punched Catilyn right back, and immediately raced to get her sister back. Only to fail again and again. Only succeeding with Echos help. Vander and Victor should have been minor characters till the end. Vander having a chance to come back but failing to do so would have been a better end then he's transformed into a robot with no memories. While Victor should have been gone till the 2nd to last episode to show how bad Jayce is in isolation and how much he needed him. It would have also contrasted how much the Hex Core affected Victor. Caitlyn should have been the dictator till the end, where only understanding that change doesn't happen till someone takes the first step will be what redeems her. This also makes Embessa a far better character to have Caitlyn's ear for almost the entirety of the story. Mel shouldn't have been isolated from the story at all, shes at her best when she's playing off other characters. She wasn't a strong woman because she could fight, she was strong because she fully utilized every tool she had to get a leg up on everyone. At least my favorite character got a great fight scene. Even if she disappeared till the final episode.
Honestly the worst part about Arcane s2 is that those rushed story lines would have been actually great directions if fleshed out. Caitlyn becoming a surrogate daughter to Ambessa in Mel's absence, Jayce getting his shit together after going through pure hell, Mel learning to put herself on the line instead of profiting from others, Jinx rebuilding herself and becoming a symbol for Zaun only to ultimately have it all taken away, Sevika dealing with Zaun's corruption without Silco, most of it is the bones of something great. The problem is the pacing. The biggest example is the songs excluding Ekko. They're good but they're treated like they're entire plotlines in 2 or 3 minutes instead of using them to flesh out plot lines.
Agreed, that's why I don't buy when the creators of the show say there was only 2 season planned, they clearly inserted like 2 seasons worth of content into one and it shows
@ I personally think they were either over ambitious or the studio didn’t expect Arcane to be the hit that it was and wanted it to lead into more league lore asap while also eliminating the show itself to the spin offs wouldn’t have to compete with what at that point would be a bigger name.
Agreed on the music video montages. They basically give us the Cliffsnotes version of what happens. Basically saying “this happens. Don’t question, just accept.”
For me, the biggest disappointment was 'The Boys' series 4. It felt like it was treading water. Nothing really happened of importance, new characters weren't that interesting and some major characters seemed to be given 'busy work' to keep them in the show without actually doing anything. I think 4 should have been the season when they wrapped everything up instead of waiting for series 5.
Definition they applied to The Boys. “ The phrase "squeeze the life out of it" is an idiom that means to take advantage of someone or something in a way that drains their energy or makes them feel worse”
This was how I summed up Arcane S2: The creators lost themselves, lost their dream. In their pursuit of great, they failed to do good. And unfortunately they can’t make it right. Drinker I could not agree more with your thoughts on Arcane. After S1 it became my favorite show. S2 had some really good moments but overall they tried doing WAY too much in too little time. I haven’t been that disappointed in a movie or show since GoT. It really is the definition of what could’ve been.
On the animation side of things, Inside Out 2, The Wild Robot, & Transformers One have been some of the absolute BEST animated movies many of us have seen in a long while. All three of them have gorgeous animation, superb voice-acting, thoughtful themes, and are enjoyed by children and adults alike. (We don't talk about Kung Fu Panda 4)
Flow was also an amazing movie that seemed to fly under the radar. I think Wild Robot will take the oscar but I hope that it is at least in contention.
I love Arcane but yeah, season 2 was a disapointment. Not overly trash like so many things, it's still watchable and entertaining but i feel like they tried to replace a good part of the story telling with violence and gore, i don't mind violence in a show but it cannot replace the story.
It was all downhill after episode 4. The fact that they just completely dropped the whole Zaun revolution story to instead focus on Werewolf Vander for two whole episodes just completely killed all the momentum that had been building to that point. Then they resolved the whole Dictator Caitlyn plot in quite possibly the most abrupt character 180 I think I've ever seen, which retroactively made that whole arc pointless; and the fact that the most we got from that whole conflict was a cringey punk rock music montage is just...inexcusable. I re-watched season 1 like a dozen times. It was literally one of my favorite pieces of media EVER. I haven't watched season 2 again since the episodes aired. HUGE disappointment.
Yah it kinda felt like mostly fan service. Also they spent too much screen time setting up stuff for another tv show (Mel). and even then none of her scenes made any sense. They didn’t have much time and they lowkey wasted a lot of it showing stuff that wasn’t relevant to the main story and characters.
@@idontthinkso6172Exactly. They spent so much time on characters from OTHER STORIES/ setting up new champions instead of following through on what was supposed to be the heart of the show - the vi/jinx relationship and the piltover/zaun conflict
@@tenoreyequetis EXACTLY!!! I couldnt agree more. I really disliked how it was basically no focus on Jinx/vi relationship and the piltover/zaun conflict. Cuz that was the story that season 1 was building up throughout! Instead, we got a generic "bad guy" that is Ambessa, and all of them teaming up to stop her. So stupid. This season could even have been better than the masterpiece and one of the best seasons to a tv show ever that is season 1 of Arcane, but they messed up big time. I still loved it, but I cant help but feel angry that we could have gotten a widely better season than what we got.
Arcane 2 really went off the rails. I was constantly reminded "oh yeah this completely unexplained plot point exists". The black rose magic was the worst offender
Although I enjoyed the show at the end of the last episode I had to go on RUclips to watch season reviews and Endings explained... not because I'm stupid and didn't understand what I saw...... but I don't know the League of Legends Canon story and often I felt myself asking the question "I'm not sure what's going on right now" where did furry Yoda go? did he survive? what's going on with the horror upside down chain torturous hellraiser witchcraft? it definitely needed another season.
100%! WHO was the Black Rose? No idea. Why was she there? No idea. What a huge letdown. Black Rose should have been the baddie for this season and then Victor for Season 3. Oh well...
@@317Chris That was a symptom of expanded universe syndrome. I know a good chunk of the lore of that world It made perfect sense to me but one good aspect of the first season is that it scaled things down so you didn't need to know these things. The World of Rune Terra is so massive and overpopulated due to League of Legends constantly pumping out stories and characters that the setting suffers from terrible World Bloat. If I'm not mistaken there are 4 or 5 other characters from that city with stories that weren't even mentioned or have been retconned out due to changes made by Arcane
@@317Chris its swain. 100%. and i heard 3 shows are green lit for the arcane universe involving the major civilizations Demacia, Noxus, and Ionia. Swain took over Noxus and im pretty sure thats where Mel is headed.
Here all about T1, awesome movie in all senses that even my gf thoroughly enjoyed despite she have not seen a single thing of transformers other than de first 3 chapters of G1 (due to its aniversary celebration being earlier this year)
2024's movie-going experience felt like a Dark Souls ending: you finally make it to the theater after dodging life’s obstacles, only to be greeted by an empty wallet, a sense of existential dread, and the burning question, 'Was it really worth it for a sequel no one asked for?'
@Walupeach4528I cant honestly say it was. They spent an entire excelent season building up Jinx, a magnificent drama that ends in tragedy with her becoming The Joker of her world.... just for s2 to practically ignore that spycho evolution and jump over it to a more sanitized version of herself. One of the cores of the story that brough me here pufff, gone. No time for that anymore. Just for this issue i cant, in good conscience, say it was a good season just because it had its moments and the animation is cool.
Hit the nail on the head with season 2 of Arcane. They tied up so many plot threads so quickly I got whiplash. Easily could have been 2 seasons, but with how much it costs to animate, I get it.
@@benjaminmason7378 Finally, someone that understands. Imagine if Arcane had a budget like rings of power. Very based, appropriate it. Rewatch it you’ll notice how the writers didn’t waste a second. They just had so much to do in so little time.
The failure of Joker 2 is so much funnier since the whole Luigi situation. Clearly, a lot more people sympathize with an angry, disillusioned gunman raging against a corrupt, dehumanizing system than the movie studio expected. If only they had made a previous movie whose reception could've told them so.
I gotta give a round of applause and “Best Short Film” vote to The Drinker for his first short feature film, “Rogue Element”! Agree with most of it, expect Romulus.. kinda liked it. It's no near perfect, but compared to the lastest Alien movies like Prometheus etc, it's pretty good.
@@r.e.holding Then you've not been looking hard enough. Romulus is bad. You don't need characters to be braindead morons who do stupid things that nobody would ever do, like keeping lethal parasitic aliens with acid blood that could compromise your ship's hull in cold storage in a room that can for some reason be turned into a sauna in minutes, not to mention failing to put them in any kind of cage or basically anything stronger than a plastic bag. Everyone recognises the dumb horror trope of characters splitting up when there is no good reason for it as bad writing, but for some reason the same thing of characters doing insanely stupid things that no actual person would do, in order to facilitate the plot, is not recognised if it simply involves a different action. Prometheus and Covenant are also terrible, so even if I agreed that Romulus was better (and I'm not sure I do) then that really means very little.
If you liked Romulus then you like eating the same sugary shit over and over. It was simply re-hashed crap which many have moved on from (and many still suck up)
Pretty sure the public mostly agrees on Arcane. When season 1 dropped no one would shut up. Season 2? Almost passed by my echo chambers entirely. There was clearly no content to discuss for the same people who flagged it tall and proud the previous season. Time will tell if someone will have a deep dive for it.
One scene that bugged me was Vi and Kate in the cell. No issue with their relationship, but the timing. Vi's sociopathic, suicidal sister just escaped, Piltover is about to fall, but let's bump boxes? Ugh.
There is an entire season just in the blink and you'll miss it appearance of Ryze in Jayce backstory. I always liked the nigh godlike champions more anyway. Like the shackled Star Dragon. Or the immortal Ice Phoenix. Or the living embodiment of darkness itself. And they are apparently on even footing with man with big sword.
Trying to tell a story for to many characters in parallel. Without taking the time to do so. I could not understand a lot of the characters motivation especally why they switch directions so quickly. It's a big downgrade from seasion 1 where everone hat a reason to act like they did.
Have you noticed how there are no white heterosexual couple relationships presented? It's either mix race or lesbian ones. I know the first season suggested this thing strongly, but it wasn't so much in your face. This time they just went all forward with this kind of shite.
Great picks Drinker- we had a very similar list I would, however, heartily recommend “Ripley”- I tied it with Shogun for my favorite series of the year. I keep waiting for you to watch and review it.
I've outgrown pop culture, to be honest. Even the so-called good stuff doesn't interest me. I've moved on to other pursuits. However, I do like watching these RUclips videos from time to time just to see what's up.
That's healthy. 99.9% of entertainment, at this point, is just slop for adolescents. There's zero 'sacred mythos' that's inspiring and motivational. It's the same old tropes and themes and archetypes re-combined in new packages by a soulless corporate A.I., and most of it is straight-up propaganda pushing 'The Message'. Moving away from it is a sign of healthy sensibilities, and growing up.
Same with me. After Avengers Endgame I lost all interest in comic book movies. The only Marvel movie I saw after that was Spiderman Far From Home just to see all three Spiderman actors together.
@JADBeats that's why DarkMatter2525 made a parody of his reviews using Aliens and Terminator 2. If they came out today despite how they're the GOATs of movies, they would be roasted by him, people like him and their audience.
With how Netflix treats animation and cancels it without warning, I can’t be super hard on Arcane for jamming itself into 2 seasons instead of 3 or 4, no matter how popular it is there’s always the chance it gets nuked before it can end
To my knowledge, it wasn't Netflix but Riot. Their plan was to make several shows set within the Runeterra universe and didn't want to just focus on Arcane's story. Two seasons became a compromise that both Netflix and Fortiche fought for, and the show ended up falling flat because of it.
Is drinker ever going to do a review on it? I had mixed feelings on it. Absolutely loved season 1. Season 2 fell a little short for me but I was so invested after that stellar first season I had to watch.
☝This. Yes, there was a lot to keep track of, but it wasn't THAT difficult. Plus, I know many animators in the industry who said to buckle down, because the fact that season 1 was so amazing was due to a chain of events that are unlikely to happen ever again. Looks like they know what they're talking about.
Thanks for naming One Life. I was fortunate to attend the premiere here in Prague. Attended by many of the crew (much of it was filmed here) and Wintons grandson. I - like most of the audience- was deeply moved, with heartfelt applause at the finish. The story is well known here, a matter of national pride, but living most of my life in Scotland I did not know it: which goes to show how important it is to get stories like this out to the world. A world that seems to be focussed on the evil, morally challenged and weak minded of todays society rather that true heroes like Winton.
Yeh I thought I had missed an episode or something. The aftermath of Viktor getting taken out and the best getting shot just jumped to a whole new story with no explanation of how they escaped and army
I think it was still about second best season of any series ever. There should have been about two more episodes, but biggest reason it didn't feel that great at first wiewing was that first season is such masterpiece.
@@themarsman5155that was always gonna happen tho, its just the way he came back was stupid he should’ve just come back as WW permanently, or at least when he was melting wouldve broken out into a rampage
@EjayT06 no but I don't mind 1 project out of 10 being woke that is actually quite representative of the size of audience interested in that stuff. TBF if woke rubbish was rarer people might actually have more interest.
I think it’s way overhyped although I admire much of the craft. I give it a 6.5 out of 10. But I guess it’s just not my cup of tea. I also thought Oppenheimer was a bit overhyped though well made. My fav in the genre this year were Maxxxine and The Substance. Trap was a bit of a disappointment for me as well and I didn’t much care for Civil War.
I love that you mentioned One Life. Sir Nicholas Winton was a legend played perfectly by Sir Anthony Hopkins. There’s a great documentary called Nicky’s Children about it as well. I knew the story and was still crying at the end of it because I cry at stories involving children lol
Shogun is hands down my favourite series of the year. Absolutely brilliant television. No agenda. No message. Just brilliant writing and directing and honouring of the source material. My favourite movie is a little seen indie-actioner out of Australia - Life after Fighting - written, directed, produced and choreographed by the insanely talented Bren Foster. Yes, it's got some flaws, but the martial arts action is some of the best I've seen since 'The Raid' and the heart and soul that Foster puts into this is awesome to see. Better than most every other mid-to-big budget action flick put out by the studios this year. Check it out if you get a chance.

The most disappointing part of Arcane S2 is how it could’ve been better than season 1 and Episode 3 shows some of that potential but unfortunately it was too rushed
Worst top 5 4me 1. Joke2 2. Joke2 3. Joke2 4. Mad(am.. e..) web 5. Tied: weaked, snora, substance, perez (Plottwist: i haven't watched either of them, n absolutely never will!)))
Yeah. For Arcane all the plot points made sense, but it was missing the stuffing that makes most of the pay offs hit hard. It depended really hard on the characterization done in the first season. I personally they did the best they could with the sheer amount of story they wanted to tell. Still this is Netflix and I’m happy we got a completed story rather than two seasons only to have the show not given a final season.
S2 obliterated most of what made Arcane valuable to the bare minimun and a fantastic animation to cover. I would have prefered for s1 to be it, honestly, that having to see that followinf such a touching and well though plot were just a collection of animated instructions.
Man you nailed it, specifically about Arcane, I totally lost track of the story mid season. Loved Shogun, one of the best shows I've watched since Band of brothers
I agree with your view on Arcane Season 2. Season 1 had 3 major arcs running in tandem, peppered with numerous minor plot lines that while entertaining, never stayed longer than needed in each episode. In season 2, everything is a major plot making important events compete against each other for screen time, and thus, non ever get the proper time to breath and be compelling.
@@altalena9139 I don't think that season 1 was a fluke, but I think that Arcane ran into the same problem so many popular shows have run into since the pandemic and the aftermath. And that is: too much time between one season and the other. I get that a show's future is not written in stone, and that it all boils down to ratings. But much like Stranger Things, if you got a story tell, and it will be told in seasons, you better fucking make sure that you got the WHOLE story ready to go so you don't spend years fucking around trying to figure out what to do next in the plot. Arcane feels like it was that issue. It has been what? 3 years since season 1 aired? That is a lot of time to spend cooking. And money is not guranteed. Fortiche needed to have as much in lockdown before the first episode of Arcane ever made air. But with these big gaps between seasons, you risk losing audience interest, and more importantly: investor interest. The writing of season 2 is still very strong, and there is a clear story they want to tell, but it is muddled by trying to cram to much into too little space. I think Drinker is right, they crammed more than they could, because likely money was running out, and a season 3 was not guaranteed anymore. And who will wait 9 years for a 3 season show (10 episodes each) to wrap up telling its tale? Not me, and I am sure Netflix was sure that many other viewers wouldn't sit around waiting either.

The Penguin was one of the few things that actually surprised me on 2024 due to how good it was. And the most mind-blowing part?It was written by a woman. I hope it sets the example on others to prioritize the story before the message.

It looks like you're implying that women can't write wonderful stories
@AnemoiaGuy Never insinuated something like that. I simply meant what writers can achieve regadless of sex when not bound to the message.

Thank you!
Apparently Jinx is still alive and might show up in Bilgewater seasons later (theorized by some)
There is actually an artbook of Jinx and Ekko preparing to help Piltover to fight the Noxus even showing them bonding together again and it's also part of deleted scenes.
I think it was still good, it just had a monumental task of following up on S1, which was nearly perfect imo
@@thegreatfitzgerald2660 for sure. Good, but could have been a top 25 all time TV show if it had been same quality of S1
Arcane 2 is coocking The Boy and The Heron by Studio Ghibli.
Studio Ghibli:😭😭
Drinker's Recommends of 2024:
1) Shōgun
2) The Penguin
3) One Life
4) Dune Part Two
5) Star Trek Unification
And yes, one of these is actually a 7 minute short; turns out there are years so awful and creatively bankrupt that you can't even make a genuine Top 5 without going through some hoops.
His list is terrible. This year we got. The Substance, La Chimera, Flow, A Different Man, Aurora, Challengers, Kneecap, Nosferatu among others. You’ll find lots of good films if you’re not a fraud hack like Drinker

Movies: Flow, The Wild Robot, Memoir of a Snail, Anora, Sing Sing, Challengers, Didi, Conclave, Evil Does Not Exist, Robot Dreams, The Beast, The Substance
I could keep going but I'll leave it at that
@@danculbert6349Nosferatu hasn’t released yet and most people think Challengers is shit.
@danculbert6349 Kneecap was a total blast!!
I think he missed Fallout.
It also destroyed the look of Viktor for any who main him in the game, but I'll admit that's secondary.
GLORIOUS EVOLUTION indeed...
and I still do not know wtf is with those black roses , Yeah those are witches, she stole a kid, but why, when ??
They were propping her up to become the next champion in the game. At the cost of the story.
I'd be curious to see if Nosferatu would have made this list if it had been produced a few weeks from now. I'd especially find it funny if Bill Skarsgard wound up headlining a best AND worst film of the year.
Yes
I'm with you on arcane season 2. As i was watching it i had an impression that they had a script full of awesome stuff and realised "oh crap, this is too much" and just started tearing out pages and whole acts of story so they could fit it in one season. I still enjoyed season 2, but wish they would have made the decision to make a season 3 so the characters and big events would've had some time to grow and make an impression.
I feel you. I can tell they really wanted to make art. What Arcane fans have picked up on in the last month or so is crazy, but I think it's clear that powers above them made them cut it down.
@@spencerstabio5936 It's sad knowing that it could've been perfect if only it had another season worth of time to flesh it out.
Thank you thank you thank you for including One Life! This movie had such an impact on me this year and it deserves all the acclaim it can get!
So rushed
Agreed, also Vander and Isha deserved better😢.

Jinx ended season 1 as a complete psycho, but then season 2 rushed her right back to being a mostly level-headed and good person. My wife was really annoyed at how different she was without enough time to mold her into being that different.

Drinker, if you never watched the 80' version of Shogun, I recommend giving it a go as I personally think it's far better except in budget.

The Boys is such slop nowadays. I liked season 1, but after that THEY CHANGED WRITERS, and now it's mostly political propaganda.
Couldn't agree more season 4 was awful really
I liked the episode with Homelander visiting his childhood lab and the ending. But the farm sequence and the Teknight stuff was dreadful.
I honestly gave up on the Boys once they abandoned all semblance of a plot to push the political views of the writers and creator.

We also don't talk about the other DreamWorks "movie" that came out this year.
Okay then
Real
Well said
Flow was also an amazing movie that seemed to fly under the radar. I think Wild Robot will take the oscar but I hope that it is at least in contention.
The movies/TV of 2024 have barely aged, but you decanted an excellent summary and verdict on them all. Going away now.
I can't believe that Naughty Dog announced a game starring Will Smith's wife in space. Lol.
GI Jane in space. don't tell will i said that or he'll slap me on a stage.
Wait that was his wife?
Not gonna lie, I thought it was the transgender boy or girl from The Last of Us 2, you know, the bald kid who is Abby's sidekick.
A bit surprised these two are missing:
Ripley - an exquisite masterpiece.
Juror #2 - almost flawless movie making.
I love Arcane but yeah, season 2 was a disapointment. Not overly trash like so many things, it's still watchable and entertaining but i feel like they tried to replace a good part of the story telling with violence and gore, i don't mind violence in a show but it cannot replace the story.
Felt like it was REALLY rushed.
It should've been 3 season if this was going to be the finale we had
Although I enjoyed the show at the end of the last episode I had to go on RUclips to watch season reviews and Endings explained... not because I'm stupid and didn't understand what I saw......
but I don't know the League of Legends Canon story and often I felt myself asking the question "I'm not sure what's going on right now"
where did furry Yoda go?
did he survive?
what's going on with the horror upside down chain torturous hellraiser witchcraft?
it definitely needed another season.
I agree, It wasnt necessarily bad but certainly worse then first season
Last time I was this early, I was told that "No one is above the law." Repeatedly.
Except of course Biden’s son hunter
I'm looking forward to a lot of things in 2025, but unfortunately not one of them is cinema. Thanks for all you do, Drinker! I raise a glass to you!
Unification reduced me to tears without a single word being spoken. That cast and crew completely hit it out of the park.
We can’t forget about the Animated movies like Inside Out 2, Transformers One, and The Wild Robot which were all absolutely amazing.
Inside out 2 was mid for me
Transformers One is amazing. Marketing did it wrong.
@@jpedro77733thought it would be much bigger with huge stars like Chris hemsworth and ScarJo voicing. Jon Hamm too
@ for real. Marketing did not do it even a fraction of justice.
Honestly. You're reviews are awesome. Keep going, you're doing the world a great service.
Yes I agree one hundred percent with you on Arcane. Should have been three seasons. Rushed rushed rushed. Too bad 😔
I'd say it was good, but I definitely agree that it should have had more episodes
Really says something when there's so much bad and disappointing stuff that Rings of Power season 2 doesn't even get mentioned
Hit the nail on the head with season 2 of Arcane. They tied up so many plot threads so quickly I got whiplash. Easily could have been 2 seasons, but with how much it costs to animate, I get it.
it still is the only show on imdb that has an entire season with a rating of 9 or higher
@youtshorts-ztn Don't get me wrong, I still love the show as a whole but the final season was very rushed to a close.
@@benjaminmason7378 Finally, someone that understands. Imagine if Arcane had a budget like rings of power. Very based, appropriate it. Rewatch it you’ll notice how the writers didn’t waste a second. They just had so much to do in so little time.
Thanks for reminding me of "One Life". I had forgotten about it. It is now on our watch list.
I watched it twice-and it was even better the second time when I watched with my young adult son (he said, “That was awesome!”). I’ll financially support the next project, for sure!
where can I watch it?
More lows than highs 😅
Most definitely
Isn't that how it usually is? The only exception was the year 1999 which is why some consider it to be the best year for Hollywood.
@@CyanRooper nothing beats 1984, the best year in cinema history in my opinion
@@Sanj1n damn, I think you're right just by looking at this list:
1984
Gremlins
The Karate Kid
Dune
The Terminator
Footloose
Ghostbusters
Once Upon A Time in America
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Beverly Hills Cop
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
This Is Spinal Tap
Police Academy
The Killing Fields
and finally, the best film of 1984:
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo
@ it was a great year full of classics
I for one absolutely loved The Acolyte! I still haven't officially watched it, but the parade of reviews from this and other channels filled me with great merriment for weeks.
Agree with most of it, expect Romulus.. kinda liked it. It's no near perfect, but compared to the lastest Alien movies like Prometheus etc, it's pretty good.
Drinker is the only one I've seen that rags on romulus...
@@r.e.holding idk, I've seen a few say it wasn't a good movie but they still kinda liked it because of the franchise.
It was simply re-hashed crap which many have moved on from (and many still suck up)
I also liked it. Was refreshing to have competent, intelligent characters after 2 films of emotionally unbalanced morons who should never be in space.
100 % agreement with Arcane. It was 3-4 seasons of material jammed into 1. I felt so much was missing and jumping all over the place.
Yeah, the show really needed a couple more seasons than it had.
Have you noticed how there are no white heterosexual couple relationships presented? It's either mix race or lesbian ones. I know the first season suggested this thing strongly, but it wasn't so much in your face. This time they just went all forward with this kind of shite.
Great picks Drinker- we had a very similar list
I would, however, heartily recommend “Ripley”- I tied it with Shogun for my favorite series of the year.
Yep, I went from a "day one!!" fan boy of multiple franchises to pure apathy toward anything from the entertainment industry.
@@c3bhmI hate how critical drinker fans spam “the message” whenever there’s diversity in anything
@JADBeats that's why DarkMatter2525 made a parody of his reviews using Aliens and Terminator 2. If they came out today despite how they're the GOATs of movies, they would be roasted by him, people like him and their audience.
Have a great year's end, Drinker. You're simply the best.
With how Netflix treats animation and cancels it without warning, I can’t be super hard on Arcane for jamming itself into 2 seasons instead of 3 or 4, no matter how popular it is there’s always the chance it gets nuked before it can end
I don't think I'll ever stop being bitter at Netflix for their decision to end 'I am Not Okay With This' after one season.
@@IdleNomad Ya that show was brilliant. So damn frustrating we don't see it continue.
Excellent content. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for the Arcane shout! Wow what a weird season, so hard to follow
Yeah I have to agree, it wasn't bad but definitely not as good as season one. It seems odd to bring Vander back when he died in such an impactful way.
Drinker pretty much spelled out my thoughts word for word on this one.

Doesn't come out in the UK until New Years Day. Check back in a year I guess.
He should watch Juror # 2 aswell
Thank you, Drinker for your recommendations! For Nightcrawler and Covenant and for One life. Thank you so much.

Thank you for this take on Arcane. I felt the exact same way man.
Same!!
I am truly surprised that Megalopolis didn't make the list!
This year had so many really really awful movies.
The less we talk about it the easier it is to forget about it
Me too!
I think it's because no one really watched it. I switched it off after half an hour.
I had my hopes up so high for season 2, and yet I'm so disappointed. Makes me feel like season 1 was a fluke
Sir, you provided me with more hours of entertainment than Hollywood did this year, and I thank you kindly for it.
Totally with you on Arcane season 2! Glad you've mentioned it and called it out for what it is
