"Who says horror has to be dark and gloomy?" One of my favorite examples of horror working despite the lack of constant doom and gloom is The Legend of Boggy Creek.
That... thing deserves the #1 spot on it's own list. In fact, I think James DID give it the number one spot on a giant monster movie list many years ago. Maybe as a joke though :P
You can't leave this empty. True. There's only so much one can expect him to be an afficianado of. Video games on multiple platforms, 80s-90s hard rock, horror, sci fi movies, kid cartoons, etc. James is a beast!
I was so hoping forbidden planet was going to get recognized. I actually caught this movie late one night and was like alright when it gets sci fi cheesey I'll watch something else. I ended up watching the entire movie. Later I told my pops that I seen a great sci fi 50s 60s flick and told him forbidden planet and he told me it's his favorite movie.
Me too, if only because James is so passionate he just can`t limit himself that much. I could listen to him discuss film and video games for hours on end...and have.
Mr. Atari 2600 Mine is "The Changeling" starring George C. Scott (1980) People tend to mix it up with the one from 2008 starring Angelina Jolie which is outright blasphemous. I wish more people would give this movie s chance.
Another great classic sci-fi flick from the 50s is Warning From Space. Just like the Day the Earth Stood Still, the aliens are trying to save us. It's from Japanese film company Daiei (Famous for the Gamera films), and I highly recommend it. Great video James!
Another reason "Forbidden Planet" was a groundbreaker was because it was patterned after Shakespear's "The Tempest," which is a concept that caught on in all manner of genres. "West Side Story" was an update of "Romeo & Juliet," then by some point, Hollywood just started making Shaksepear movies in the modern era.
Agreed and like the book it's based on, arguably underrated. At least for me it's hard to find anyone on my usual forums of dwelling who are familiar with either. And incidentally, IDW Comics did a four issue adaptation of the book last year.
James Rolfe, It's very obvious to your viewers that your Monster Madness reviews are done with care and a passionate knowledge of your subject. This review, however, has reached a new level of sophistication. All I can say is... "WOW!" Intelligent, insightful and excellent choices in your sub-genres. You've saved the best for your last Monster Madness series, it seems; all eleven reviews have so far been outstanding! Thank you for everything you've given us in these reviews (and your other series', of course). I have your videos on all the time; it's like listening to an old friend you're very comfortable with. Looking forward to your future work. All my best to you and yours!
Thank you SO much for including The Shrinking Man in this! My dad showed me this masterpiece not too long ago and I was blown away. I was sure you'd mention it some day, and I'm really happy you did. I absolutely recommend it. The philosophical questions in the end of the film overshadow any message made in today's movies. No exaggeration
I had the same Fly viewing experience, back to back. The original is definitively the best of the two and one of the greatest horror movies of all time.
This is really well done. I don't know how you do it James. You have a high quality top ten every week, along with other great retrospectives. You are giving Monster madness the farewell it deserves. We will miss it, but we are glad to still have you.
James and Mike, the amount of work you are putting in this year is INSANE. Monster Madness is part of what makes October my favorite month. Thank you so much for putting this together!
It's been so long since I saw a lot of those old horror movies. I remember TCM played them in October when I was a young teen. I remember watching the fly. Thanks for sharing these classics with everyone, James.
Another great installment! :D However...the part (12:57) describing how Dr. Morbius builds a machine to turn thought into reality is incorrect. :( The machine was left over from the Krell civilization and is implied to have been the reason for their disappearance. Just wanted to point that out! (Ginormous nerd that I am!) Forbidden Planet is one of my favorite films and I watch it fairly regularly. What a classic! It scared the CRAP out of me as a kid! Keep up the good work guys! Love Monster Madness! :D
This is great stuff. The love and reverance (sp?) you display for each of these movies is absolutely wonderful. Hearing you talk about them and seeing you smile and laugh shows how much you love this stuff. Seeing creators getting to geek out and enjoy themselves is always fantastic ^_^
I know this 5 years too late but, thanks to you, I now know why the restaurant in monsters Inc is called harryhausens! I don't watch horror movies so I don't know the legends of the genre. Great video though, I might check out some of the movies you mentioned. The Tingler sounds interesting👍
I'm really enjoying the detail you've put into making these lists. It's a much better way to do them rather than just saying, "Well, here's my top 10!" It allows me to see more of your opinions on the films of the time, as a whole, as well as the individual ones you have for each film. Thanks for another fantastic Monster Madness!
Agreed. The Incredible Shrinking Man is a legit choice (especially the spider fight and the ending that followed) but I would've swapped it to second for Forbidden Planet easily.
Some great suggestions. I recently rewatched the original 1958 "The Fly" movie, and I gotta say, it still holds up well. Great story, great performances, and one of the most spine tingling endings to any sci-fi horror movie ever.
I seriously need to make time to watch all of these >_> ... you've introduced me to so many great classic films James thank you for being so passionate about movies !! ❤️
Love your content. From probably one of your more "veteran" viewers. I've see all of these, laying on the couch Saturday mornings in a pillow fort lol. One thing, in Forbidden Planet it was the Krell that in fact built technology to create "monsters from the id". Remember that was their downfall..."my poor Krell". Easily in my top 5 sci fi. Thanks for all your shows.
The reason I love Monster Madness so much is your passion. It is really entertaining listening to you go over your favorites and I get the sense that you know what you're talking about, even if it is only opinion. It's a great contrast with the nerd videos. Best part of October!
i for oen cant see movies or series outside from star wars from the 70s and down. Why? they are not bad at all but they feel so bad compere to what we get today that i just cant watch them. Liek i said without them we would never get the moviees we get now but CGI has spoiled me to a point that i love it too much but i also agree with you guys that old movies as a better charme than the new ones.
Damn, James, these are so good. Thanks so much for putting so much effort into these capsule reviews. Hopefully, they attract some people towards experiencing decently made film, and possibly introduce them to something they'd never seen before. The little girl screaming in "THEM!" creeps me out to this day. I'm really hoping Hitchcock's "The Birds" is in your 60's list!
I think they will play horror games atm because of the Halloween season and all but it's a good suggestion Jason . I hope they will play it later on ;-)
My local indie/art house theater does the usual October horror movie nights but this year they announced they'll be showing the Tingler! When I commented something about how I would have loved to see that in the 50's with all the Castle gimmicks they replied "Don't worry, we have plenty of surprises in store for that movie" I'm almost as stoked for this as I was getting to see my all time favorite movie, Halloween, on the big screen there. Can't wait!
John Carpenter's Thing is my favourite movie. But yeah, I love the original also. Invasion Of The Body Snatchers is another fantastic movie with an equally good remake.
Wow, never would have imagined Shrinking Man to top the last list. It's one of my absolute favourite movies of all time and I must've seen it dozens of times.
When researching William Castle's 'The Tingler' I discovered that Sony Pictures owns the rights. I can imagine that Sony could release a special version of the film which uses the force feedback controllers to replicate the buzzer sensation.
My own Top Ten Science Fiction Films of the Decade (although I could easily go up to twenty): 1. The Thing From Another World 2. Forbidden Planet 3. Invasion of the Body Snatchers 4. War of the Worlds 5.The Incredible Shrinking Man 6.Them! 7. The Quatermass Xperiment 8.The Monster That Challenged the World 9. The 4-D Man 10. The Magnetic Monster
I am a teacher, and I have to say. James I hope someday you are hired as a film professor. Your insights and passion for the material make you so interesting. I feel smarter after watching one of your reviews.
This is a great crash course in classic sci-fi. I'm taking a Science Fiction Film course at the moment and you've hit almost all the films we watch in class.
12:00 YES glad you highlighted the original Fly movie. In many ways I think the original is better: the story is more suspensful, the lead female is more likeable, the supporting cast serve their role nicely, and the non-linear storytelling is more interesting. In the remake Jeff Goldblum steals the show, and the special effects as well as the plot rely more on shock value, which results in a more emotional experience to some, but not to me.
These lists are fantastic. I completely agree with every single one of your choices. That's kind of incredible, but maybe we just happened to have grown up watching the same movies around the same times- I don't know haha
Whoops. In "Forbidden Planet" Dr Morbius isn't the inventor of the thought machine - it comes from the civilization that existed on the planet before (and killed itself off using their creation). Good episode, James.
Forbidden Planet is awesome! It is still one of my favorite movies even today (even if effects are bad). But two thing: 1) He didn't created machine! It was alien supercomputer what wipe out its creators and Morbius only find and activated it. 2) It is funny that they try make Robie appear as potential villain when he is in fact a positive character. Red Herring indeed..
I've seen must of these great movies already thanks to you James, your recommendations are always the best and most reliable on all of the internert, in my opinion. Sad to see this incredible reviews end soon
I can't get enough of Monster Madness. I look forward to it every year, as a lifetime fan of horror films. These videos introduced me to a lot of movies I hadn't heard of before, or didn't give a chance in the past. If I have the house to myself I love cooking with a backdrop of Monster Madness. haha Anyway, thanks for the years of entertainment.
Just watched "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and it´s an AWESOME Masterpiece of Film. Thanks for this cool Review, James! Without it i never came to this Title (Y)
What I plan to do, starting next year, is rewatch all of the Monster Madness episodes over the course of October, organized in chronological order of the movies' release dates. I figure I'll watch around ten reviews per day on average. I'll probably throw in some non-MM horror reviews that James has done as well.
You should really do a video on Ray Harryhausen at some point. Like a top 10 creatures, or movies, or even just a video talking about his collective work. His influence on movies and future film makers who came after him is undeniable.
"Who says horror has to be dark and gloomy?"
One of my favorite examples of horror working despite the lack of constant doom and gloom is The Legend of Boggy Creek.
Scott Vogler "travel down the road, looking for a Waffle House, drinking lots of Wild Turkey. Whooohooo!"
Scott Vogler I AM that wild man
Giant Claw is not #1? But it's big as a battleship.
That... thing deserves the #1 spot on it's own list.
In fact, I think James DID give it the number one spot on a giant monster movie list many years ago. Maybe as a joke though :P
akba666 I was surprised - I thought I understood the pattern.
akba666 slow clap
A flying battleship, nonetheless.
akba666 Lol James had Giant Claw as his #1 on his top ten giant movie monsters list from many years ago
James truly is the king of B-Movie trivia
StubenhockerElite he knows his B
ahem.. movie trivia
it's called iMDB trivia.
You can't leave this empty. True. There's only so much one can expect him to be an afficianado of. Video games on multiple platforms, 80s-90s hard rock, horror, sci fi movies, kid cartoons, etc. James is a beast!
Leslie Nielsen being in Forbidden Planet blew my mind
I was so hoping forbidden planet was going to get recognized. I actually caught this movie late one night and was like alright when it gets sci fi cheesey I'll watch something else. I ended up watching the entire movie. Later I told my pops that I seen a great sci fi 50s 60s flick and told him forbidden planet and he told me it's his favorite movie.
That’s a lovely story! 😄
I love how the "top ten tuesdays" never actually is a top ten
Me too, if only because James is so passionate he just can`t limit himself that much. I could listen to him discuss film and video games for hours on end...and have.
Even after all these years, that ending of the original "The Fly" still gets me....
"Help me, Help meeeee"
The war of the worlds 1950's version is my all-time a favorite movie.
Mr. Atari 2600 Mine is "The Changeling" starring George C. Scott (1980)
People tend to mix it up with the one from 2008 starring Angelina Jolie which is outright blasphemous. I wish more people would give this movie s chance.
YOU'RE ET GAME WAS WORSE THAN JEKYLL AND HYDE ON NES
Nani?
Another great classic sci-fi flick from the 50s is Warning From Space. Just like the Day the Earth Stood Still, the aliens are trying to save us. It's from Japanese film company Daiei (Famous for the Gamera films), and I highly recommend it. Great video James!
Thank you for your recommend
It's on Amazon Prime!
"Film now a days is about giant bugs; giant spiders; giant grasshoppers! Who would believe such nonsense?"
*-Bela Lugosi (**_Ed Wood_**, 1994)*
Seeing The Tingler in the theatre, twice, with people who set up some William Castle antics was a great experience.
Finally someone who knows what he's talking about, and he's a young guy.(No dinosaur like me who grew up during the golden age of horror)
I sadly only know about _Forbidden Planet_ is because the UFO shots from that movie were used frequently in the alien episodes of _The Twilight Zone._
Incorrect
Cinemassacre is the best RUclips channel.
Facts.....
but sadly they're kinda weak gamers
The Incredible Shrinking Man was fantastic.
Agreed and like the book it's based on, arguably underrated. At least for me it's hard to find anyone on my usual forums of dwelling who are familiar with either.
And incidentally, IDW Comics did a four issue adaptation of the book last year.

Any fan of the band the Misfits owes it all to these films. Without these films there wouldn't have been the band. Bravo Cinemassacre
This is probably the Monster Madness to rule them all. Amazing work as always.
Loving all the Monster Madness X videos this Halloween Season. Great final Series.
New Anomaly Productions
New Anomaly Productions Exactly.
No more Monster Madness? :'(
There will still be Monster Madness, but it won't be a month-long thing anymore.
optimegatrongodzilla there will be 31 episodes trust me.

I'm looking forward to how you divide the '70's and '80's!
Glad to see Monster Madness going out on such a high note.
Thanks James.
"Spoiled by Jeff Goldblum " - James Rolfe
He was great in it. Got to give him that.
Thanks for pumping these out James. You have been a huge inspiration to watch some great films.
I've been marathoning all of James' Monster Madness videos that he's made over the years, this month. I'm loving it!!
It's been so long since I saw a lot of those old horror movies. I remember TCM played them in October when I was a young teen. I remember watching the fly. Thanks for sharing these classics with everyone, James.

Surprised This Island Earth wasn't mentioned at all. The MONSTER from THAT flick is pretty iconic.
The Incredible Shrinking Man is my kind of film.
Hank Pym Salutations how's your wife
PENNY POLENDINA Janet... ;(
wat
The Wasp Woman is Jan's type of movie.
To tell the truth James, 98% of your list favorites are mine too!! Great Choices! =D
I just realized how that a lot of these movies must have had some influence on the Fallout series.
They definitely did. The film "Them!", for example, was turned into a mission in Fallout 3 called "Those!".
D. S. That Robbie the robot looked very much like Fallout's Protectrons
LeHarlequin That, too! I can't believe I forgot to mention that.
Invasion of the Synths!
***** I knew that immediately. XD
My mind never connected the similarities between "Them" and "Aliens".
You just blew my mind!

YES! Thank you James Rolfe for mentioning war of the worlds. The classic is great :)
Also I knew you couldn't forget Godzilla :D
Great stuff man! Sucks it'll be over by the end of the month, but I love Monster Madness!
This will be the last one where he makes videos for each day of October. There will be more after this, though!
I fucking love anything with James in it. This channel and their extra channel is all I watch now on RUclips. Never stop guys!!
Looking forward to the Bronze Age the most.
meeee toooooooo dooood
+larry lovehandle yea he has a opinion I don't agree with so I'll just devalue and shit on it
Is it because you're one of those people who refuses to watch anything before the 70s?
Death is the punisher from no where. He will do major damage if there is someone to blame. Especially if they are seen enjoying the death.
i for oen cant see movies or series outside from star wars from the 70s and down.
Why? they are not bad at all but they feel so bad compere to what we get today that i just cant watch them.
Liek i said without them we would never get the moviees we get now but CGI has spoiled me to a point that i love it too much but i also agree with you guys that old movies as a better charme than the new ones.
I've plucked a few flicks from this list and added them to my "Movies To See" list...💯✔️
I miss the game reviews but this is a master class in classic Sci Fi movies. Vary much appreciated 🙂
please dont let this be the last monstermadness . amazing job james
The Day the Earth Stood Still is where the Evil Dead "Cloteu Verta Niku" came from.
Klaatu...Barada...Nikto!
DANATANLOVER .....Klattu Barada COUGHmumbleCOUGHnnarati.......There! I said it!
those are also three names of goons in Jabba the hutt's palace in ROTJ,Lucas got the names from that movie.
Hail to the king, baby.
So... How bout hotline Miami for James and mike Monday's?
Keep up the good work
I think they will play horror games atm because of the Halloween season and all but it's a good suggestion Jason .
I hope they will play it later on ;-)
I know but maybe sometime next month
Jason Parsons
I love these series. Can't have enough of listening to James talking about anything he loves!
Now i see the influence from the Spirit Drinker monster from the X-Men Shi'ar storyline. It's straight out of Forbidden Planet!
Can't wait for the 70s and 80s
Didn't he already do '80s-a-thon?
he's only doing the 70's this year, i think. (at least that's how he made it seem)
next week is the 60s and last week is the 70s from looking at the calendar.
OnCominStorm So no 80s. what a shame, altough james did the 80s-a-thon some time ago.
My local indie/art house theater does the usual October horror movie nights but this year they announced they'll be showing the Tingler! When I commented something about how I would have loved to see that in the 50's with all the Castle gimmicks they replied "Don't worry, we have plenty of surprises in store for that movie"
I'm almost as stoked for this as I was getting to see my all time favorite movie, Halloween, on the big screen there.
I just love the way James speak about things he is passionate about . (and incredibly funny when he speaks about things he hates)
And I'm also remember "The Day of the Triffids" 1962. :)
When researching William Castle's 'The Tingler' I discovered that Sony Pictures owns the rights. I can imagine that Sony could release a special version of the film which uses the force feedback controllers to replicate the buzzer sensation.
Don't forget "It! The Terror From Beyond Space" --1958.
I was The Thing - the original movie a couple of years ago. I had the right mindset and I really enjoyed that version too, it was quite good.
I am loving Monster Madness this year. I feel like I'm learning so much about horror films every day. Great stuff!
All great films from a decade that introduced so many new genres in horror.
James soon will become a mainstream face of horror movies like something iconic and in the future he will inspire others to do!
Wait, I remember a similar concept like Fiend Without a Face being shown in the Iron Giant. I wonder if it's a reference/parody.
This is a great crash course in classic sci-fi. I'm taking a Science Fiction Film course at the moment and you've hit almost all the films we watch in class.
i really hope james can do more movie review stuff. the guy is like a historian with tons of interesting facts and trivia
Thanks for doing such a great job with these monster madness videos. They're so fun to watch. You guys do a great job.
12:00 YES glad you highlighted the original Fly movie. In many ways I think the original is better: the story is more suspensful, the lead female is more likeable, the supporting cast serve their role nicely, and the non-linear storytelling is more interesting. Inspiration for the Coneheads 😀
Ian Findly it looks dope as well
Umm, Dr Morbius didn't create the machine, in Forbidden Planet. It was created by the Krell centuries earlier.
These lists are fantastic. I completely agree with every single one of your choices. That's kind of incredible, but maybe we just happened to have grown up watching the same movies around the same times- I don't know haha
thanks for making these James. I love these reviews!
Thanks for doing this every year James.
Awesome episode. I'm looking forward to next week with the Hammer films.
I wonder if The Blob was inspired by the shoggoth of Lovecraftian lore?
I bet it was. It is even more noticable in the remake.
Come to think of it, The Blob did have kind of a Cosmic Lovecraftian vibe to it... Good catch.
I think it's more like the "shamblers from the stars"
I also assume the CFTBL was based of Dagon.
Oh, and the Thing was based on the Mountains of Madness
Damn it, James. These videos are awesome.
Whoops. In "Forbidden Planet" Dr Morbius isn't the inventor of the thought machine - it comes from the civilization that existed on the planet before (and killed itself off using their creation). Good episode, James.
There was a movie from 1985 called "The Stuff". It's a 1950's style horror movie made 30 years later. Definitely worthy of a viewing.
You guys should play " The Deadly Tower of Monsters". It's heavily inspired in Forbidden Planet and other 50's movies!
Amazing work James! Thanks for all the hard work.
Forbidden Planet is awesome! It is still one of my favorite movies even today (even if effects are bad). But two thing:
1) He didn't created machine!
I kinda hope we never get a straight up top ten on top ten Tuesdays.
I'd sort of like to see a remake of Fiend Without A Face! :)
I can't get enough of Monster Madness. I look forward to it every year, as a lifetime fan of horror films. These videos introduced me to a lot of movies I hadn't heard of before, or didn't give a chance in the past. If I have the house to myself I love cooking with a backdrop of Monster Madness. haha
Anyway, thanks for the years of entertainment.
Just watched "The Incredible Shrinking Man" and it´s an AWESOME Masterpiece of Film. Thanks for this cool Review, James! Without it i never came to this Title (Y)

The Incredible Shrinking Man is one of my dad's favourite sci-fi movies. It makes me nostalgic.
A bunch of these movies are mentioned in Metal gear solid 3
i love cinemassacre's monster madness and these theme days are good idea. thank you for entertaining us :)
These are so fun, Monster Madness hands down my favorite Cinemassacre content.
You should really do a video on Ray Harryhausen at some point. Like a top 10 creatures, or movies, or even just a video talking about his collective work. His influence on movies and future film makers who came after him is undeniable.
Damn good! Makes me want to watch these old classics for sure.
Really excited to get to the Bronze Age. Really interesting films here. Might check out Forbidden Planet.
Again you and Chris Stuckman have the best shirts!
The image you used of the monster from 20,000,000 Miles to Earth is legitimately terrifying. It made want to buy the movie.
