"Who says horror has to be dark and gloomy?"
One of my favorite examples of horror working despite the lack of constant doom and gloom is The Legend of Boggy Creek.

You can't leave this empty. True. There's only so much one can expect him to be an afficianado of. Video games on multiple platforms, 80s-90s hard rock, horror, sci fi movies, kid cartoons, etc. James is a beast!

I was so hoping forbidden planet was going to get recognized. I actually caught this movie late one night and was like alright when it gets sci fi cheesey I'll watch something else. I ended up watching the entire movie. Later I told my pops that I seen a great sci fi 50s 60s flick and told him forbidden planet and he told me it's his favorite movie.

People tend to mix it up with the one from 2008 starring Angelina Jolie which is outright blasphemous. I wish more people would give this movie s chance.

Another reason "Forbidden Planet" was a groundbreaker was because it was patterned after Shakespear's "The Tempest," which is a concept that caught on in all manner of genres. "West Side Story" was an update of "Romeo & Juliet," then by some point, Hollywood just started making Shaksepear movies in the modern era.

Another great classic sci-fi flick from the 50s is Warning From Space. Just like the Day the Earth Stood Still, the aliens are trying to save us. It's from Japanese film company Daiei (Famous for the Gamera films), and I highly recommend it. Great video James!

The philosophical questions in the end of the film overshadow any message made in today's movies. No exaggeration

    James Rolfe,
It's very obvious to your viewers that your Monster Madness reviews are done with care and a passionate knowledge of your subject. This review, however, has reached a new level of sophistication. All I can say is... "WOW!" Intelligent, insightful and excellent choices in your sub-genres. You've saved the best for your last Monster Madness series, it seems; all eleven reviews have so far been outstanding!
Thank you for everything you've given us in these reviews (and your other series', of course). I have your videos on all the time; it's like listening to an old friend you're very comfortable with. Looking forward to your future work. All my best to you and yours!

Why? they are not bad at all but they feel so bad compere to what we get today that i just cant watch them.
Liek i said without them we would never get the moviees we get now but CGI has spoiled me to a point that i love it too much but i also agree with you guys that old movies as a better charme than the new ones.

One thing, in Forbidden Planet it was the Krell that in fact built technology to create "monsters from the id". Remember that was their downfall..."my poor Krell". Easily in my top 5 sci fi. Thanks for all your shows.

Another great installment! :D However...the part (12:57) describing how Dr. Morbius builds a machine to turn thought into reality is incorrect. :( The machine was left over from the Krell civilization and is implied to have been the reason for their disappearance. Just wanted to point that out! (Ginormous nerd that I am!) Forbidden Planet is one of my favorite films and I watch it fairly regularly. What a classic! It scared the CRAP out of me as a kid! Keep up the good work guys! Love Monster Madness! :D

I am going to try to give a reason as to why people like this say modern horror is bad while old horror is good. Since old horror movies did, well, come out in the past everybody only remembers the good horror films while the bad ones are left by the wayside because they aren't really worth remembering, even though just like the modern era of horror there were plenty of god awful old horror films. But then with modern horror, while we may have some clue on what's going to be remembered (like the vvitch and hereditary), it's still pretty up in the air. So we are watching as all these shitty movies fly by us and since there are a lot more of them were focused on them rather than the smaller amount of good horror films. But as time passes, just like old horror films, only the good modern horror films will be remembered while all the shitty ones will be yet again left by the wayside. There are other factors to this too like the modern being pretty experimental and a lot of people dont like experimental stuff for whatever reason. Also it's way easier to advertise nowadays so it's hard to avoid crappy horror movies when it's on some RUclips ad or something compared to in the 50s - 80s when you would have to go to a movie theater to watch a movie. So those are m basic reasonings as to why I tend to see this type of "old horror good new horror bad" type of argument.

Forbidden Planet is awesome! It is still one of my favorite movies even today (even if effects are bad). But two thing:
    1) He didn't created machine! It was alien supercomputer what wipe out its creators and Morbius only find and activated it.
    2) It is funny that they try make Robie appear as potential villain when he is in fact a positive character. Red Herring indeed..

I've only ever seen The Fly from 1958 and not the remake and it's one of my fav horror films, I should definitely get around to watching Goldbloom get mutated as well
The original is on Netflix if anyone wants to watch it!

There was a movie from 1985 called "The Stuff". It's a 1950's style horror movie made 30 years later. Definitely worthy of a viewing.

James, I hope you'll read this, but I doubt it. Still, I'm going to ask.
Have you ever read anything by HP Lovecraft? I feel like it might totally be up your alley, with all the cosmic horror and human insignificance infront of beings that are so far above humanity that humans are little more than ants to them.

Whoops. In "Forbidden Planet" Dr Morbius isn't the inventor of the thought machine - it comes from the civilization that existed on the planet before (and killed itself off using their creation). Good episode, James.

You should really do a video on Ray Harryhausen at some point. Like a top 10 creatures, or movies, or even just a video talking about his collective work. His influence on movies and future film makers who came after him is undeniable.

What I plan to do, starting next year, is rewatch all of the Monster Madness episodes over the course of October, organized in chronological order of the movies' release dates. I figure I'll watch around ten reviews per day on average. I'll probably throw in some non-MM horror reviews that James has done as well.

Not sure if James or Mike will see this but anyone here into Radio horror/sci-fi? more specifically Old Time Radio (OTR) from the 40s and 50s. Even some good ones from the 60s thru 80s. you can even find some good podcasts that try to replicate it. Nothing beats the theater of imagination. Itd be cool to see a video on that but i think he made al his MMX vids ahead of time.
I got into them a little over 5 years ago when i decided to look up Orson Welles War of the Worlds (i think for Mercury Theater) just to see how it scared people into actually thinking there was an alien invasion. IT was pretty well done and i can see why anyone who missed the beginning would believe a space ship crashed on Earth.
Some good ones that range from thriller, horror, suspense and mystery are Light Out, Mysterious Traveler, Inner Sanctum, Quiet Please, and Suspense. My favorite is X-minus 1, way more sci-fi than horror but still can be creepy and a lot of great scifi stories.
One of the scariest stories i listened to was Porch Light from a canadian 1980s radio show called Nightfall. Nightfall seem to be a fan favorite, but all the stories are either hit or miss for me (mostly miss) but the ones that do hit are pretty fucking creepy, like The Porch Light. Listen to it alone at night in the dark. Gave me chills. Nothing can scare you more than your own imagination, well at least for me.

These videos introduced me to a lot of movies I hadn't heard of before, or didn't give a chance in the past. If I have the house to myself I love cooking with a backdrop of Monster Madness. haha
Anyway, thanks for the years of entertainment.
