My Favorite Keeley Pedals

- This week is basically a love letter from Josh Scott to Robert Keeley, but it's (slightly) less weird than it sounds. Basically, Josh and Nick play their favorite Keeley pedals, and the results are fantastic. Notice we didn't say "the best Keeley pedals," because then they would have played all of them.

Clown Jazz is my new favorite jam! So glad you gave shout-outs to my team. They manifest the crazy effect dreams I have. It's an honor to be on your show Josh. Thank you for all you do for the pedal world. I consider you one of the fathers of the pedal world, you've created so much.
Thanks for all the years of amazing tones! You own and all the pedal makers you've inspired
awesome to see you here Robert. I posted above about a broken gray 4-knob compressor. I do embedded software and hardware dev, so I'll probably open it up to see if I can fix. It's 5 years old but barely used. LED failed first and then it stopped working so I suspect a short or similar dysfunction.
Love you Keeley❤️
Going to have to pick up a Caverns because of this vid. Nice pedals!
Next time screw up, and my peeps look at me,I’m gonna do it again and say CLOWN JAZZ. YUP🤡🚕🤣🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿👍🏿
Nick is a wildly underated drummer..to be able to follow josh's random riffs is absolutely outstanding..i mean c'mon, for those ghost notes alone he deserve full recognition..top notch brother..
Not to revive a dead post, but I wholeheartredly agree, I think a lot of Nick's contributions are underrated - maybe underappreciated is better, just from people maybe not knowing he does the editing, stingers, mic set up(I think) etc
@@loganmcgee18 if he is the one doing the mixes, hats off to that too!
I agree as well
OK Josh, I’m serious here. Your “Do this, do this, do this,” gave me a new JHS merch idea. I’d love to see JHS make a “fidget ” mini pedal. Not for guitar, just to leave on one’s desk and fidget with. Call it something witty/pun-ish.
Small metal pedal box with a battery inside, foot switch and knobs for controlling a couple LED lights; maybe a selector switch or toggle to change the colors. The potentiometers could speed up and slow down the blinking lights. That’s it.
Put a cool JHS paint job on it. Sell them to your fans for reasonable price $40ish to $50ish and give them away during your YT shows.
This 👆For sure!
That's a great idea.
Yes. This. Soon. I have meetings to attend!
I want this
Just shut up and take my money...
It was 3 years ago when I really got into using guitar pedals and I came across the Keeley Caverns V2. The thing was that in Guatemala it was hard to find keeley pedals on sale and you needed to get in touch with distributors. On top of that, I needed to travel a few hours just to buy that pedal. It was all worth it when I tried that rich reverb and delay with modulation and until this day, it is my favorite pedal ever and I would never change it.
Keeley and JHS are my favorite pedals.
I woke up one day and realized half my pedal board is from Keeley. So I leaned in and bought the Supro Keeley Custom 12 amp. Mr. Keeley, just take all my money; you earned it.
I dig mine! Still like yours?
There are two reasons why I watch pedal shows. 1. New gear to possibly get. 2. Affirmation of the gear I got. Today’s affirmation comes from the kind gentleman of JHS using the Keeley Dyna-Trem. I got one about 3 years ago and it hasn’t left my board. I actually use it for a cheap copy of Robin Trower sounds as well as everything else.
Et tu? I have half these pedals but the DynaTrem will be buried with me.
Even if I'm not dead yet, just to make sure I don't lose it
The Loomer is the oldest pedal on my board, and my all-time favorite pedal of any kind. Love Keeley's stuff
YESSSSS! It’s the oldest pedal on my Bizzaro world board, fantastic .And I’m 70🕺🏿✌🏿✌🏿👍🏿MBV in a box
I enjoy the realizer reverb component!
Just started working for Robert this week and have gotten to know him and his team. Robert is a wonderful guy. He has mentored people like Josh, Heather Brown of Heather Brown Electrocals and the people that started Walrus and Old Blood Noise.
woah, that's awesome!
What a great episode! I recently bought the D&M Drive by Keeley after a/b-ing it against the oxblood and the King of Tone… it’s now my favorite Keeley pedal and probably my second favorite pedal ever only after the Carl Martin Plexitone dual channel.
The Steak & Eggs was my first JHS pedal, and my first Keeley pedal! I have a Caverns now too. Love both these brands, and I'll keep my S&E forever. ...or until it hits Klon prices...
One day on a lesson in compression, my guitar teacher informed me a package would arrive at my door. Days later it showed up and it was a keeley compressor from mr keeley himself!! My teacher knows him, he told Robert he was teaching me and mr keeley sent it to me, It was my first compression pedal so when I described it to my teacher, to which I said something like "it let's me sound soft enough to play with my hippie friends because I hit the strings too hard" and my teacher said mr keeley never heard that description before... Robert Keeley is an absolute treasure of a human, I'm about to start modding and building pedals just because that situation and JHS pedals making these videos got me into it
Love my Keeley Compressor!
So cool!
@@jhspedals epic! Thank you!!
I absolutely love this channel so much
Excellent video and great jams!!!
I have the Super Path Mod in my pedalboard and I love it so much!!!
I will love to see you doing an episode with your favorite Wampler pedals!!!
Another great show 👍 My Keeley modded Blues Driver has been the cornerstone of my pedalboard for many years
My Caverns V2 has become a permanent resident on my main board since i picked it up a year ago. Literally not a bad setting on it.
Still have my JHS Spring Tank that will go on my basic board (when i get around to assembling that is).
Great stuff
Sonar So Good needs to be a full track with that signal chain. Damn beautiful
Still running my TS9 AND 4-knob comp 10 years later! Been gigging them for that long they are staples on the board, they've never left
Lovely video! Caverns v2 is my favorite. Amazing pedal. I even use it for my acoustic setup as well.
He's got a few Zappa influenced pedals and that makes me happy.
Yeah, yesterday I told a friend (a huge Zappa fan) he should check out the Bubbletron. He loved it. I knew he would. 😊
Unbelievable jams in this video, great job to the whole band. I could listen to you guys play all day even with no words.
Both JHS and Keeley are the best of the best pedal creators. We are so lucky to live in a world where both of you exist. You make my life more enjoyable every day with your amazing creations and I can’t thank you enough. I look forward to my 2 hours a day with my guitar, amp and pedals. Takes me out of this crazy world and it’s my antidepressant.
Thanks JHS and Keeley
I have a couple. 4 knob compressor and the Mag Echo delay and they're both GREAT pedals. Especially the Mag Echo. The tape warble thing it does is nice! 👍
This is my favorite late nite show of all time, never gets old fashioned. Happy new year everyone!
I love the titles you come up with for your jams. They make me laugh every time. There were some serious John Scofield Vibes in the clown jazz Jam. You guys rock every single time!
I’m trying to figure out what song @3:23 reminds me of. I’ve spent an hour trying to figure it out
Vibe-o-Verb is severely underrated. It’s become an “always on” for me! Provides a little dash of subtle movement that makes my mediocre riffage sound more interesting.
I don't see enough love for this pedal. It's so under-the-radar. I thought I wanted a phaser a while ago, but could never quite find a phaser sound I totally liked in my multi effects and plugins I was trying out. But this pedal was just enough of the touch of phaser, with reverb, and it was exactly what I wanted. Keeley always has the best combination of creative-but-practical effects.
Always wanted one of those ever since I put a Phase 90 in the loop of my Pedal Projects Marbleverb
I’ve been wanting one of those for awhile. I was hoping to see it in this episode.
@@nicholasrella6904 Yeah I wish it was featured too, as it's so unique. But one of the best parts about it, it's relatively cheap! Give it a shot, I think it's one of those pedals where if you think you're gonna like it, you'll end up liking it. It's much easier to take the plunge on the Vibe-o-verb than some expensive boutique pedal, it's only $150. One of the reasons I was comfortable ordering it without trying it out in-person first.
The discontinued ME-8 is another that doesn't get enough love. I never leave home without it .
I love my D&M Drive. I stack the drive side with a morning glory for some sweet tones and when I need to cut through a mix that boost is dialed in perfectly. It's been one of my favorite pedals on my board for quite some time when I hit solos.
Just ordered the Realizer the other day from its most recent run. Looking forward to trying it out!
Great video and love your song titles. I have a healthy collection of Keeley pedals and love ‘‘em all. Prob my favorite is his Phase 24.
I think the fact that there was no love for the Bubbletron makes that the most underrated.
Ive wanted one but my ehx mod 11 kinda...almost sorta does it? Not really though
Still watching, my favorite though is the Monterey. Love the fuzz, great modulation. I know it’s Jimi inspired but it’s really versatile.
My wife bought me a Keeley Monterey for our anniversary. Its amazing. Keeley and his team are awesome.
I run a Keeley compressor. I use it more as a clean boost with the comp turned way down. I really appreciate the single coil/humbucker switch. Works great going in front of a Tumnus. Great episode
The Caverns v2 was my first Keeley pedal. Love it!
Shout out to Nick. His drumming really supports these songs super well.
My favorite quote of this episode “trim just gets ya going when your not ready to go”…..nothing like some good trim!!!!! 😄
Keeley ECCOS is so much bang for your buck, looks cool, and sounds amazing. By far my favorite Keeley pedal.
Same! i didn't realize the value of the pedal when I bought mine! I will never get rid of it.
Agreed! Great pedal!
hear, hear.
Absolutely killer delay pedal.
For real! Great delay modulations, expression pedal compatible, integrated looper, small form factor. Last in my chain forever.
I love the Leslie, Vibratone and Univibe sounds in is Rotosonic pedal. Truly great rotary sounds.
The Synth-1 is one of my all-time favorite pedals and it never leaves my board. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like to make unpredictable sounds, it can't be beat.
I got a Keeley pedal as a gift from my guitarist/homie for my Birthday earlier this year, and it's possibly my favorite pedal in my small collection. The Dyno-My-Roto, possibly the most beautiful chorus tone I've heard on any pedal. I just love it, and the roto-flange option isn't that bad either. Was honestly hoping to hear it in this video, would love to see it in another vid tho.
Josh, your guitar playing is so good, addictive and very original
It's cool seeing the love from one awesome pedal manufacturer to another. And yeah, I get the love for Keeley for sure.
I just purchased a keeley compressor 2 days ago, lol looking forward to receiving it ,I'm sure it will be awesome 👌
'We buy used tracks' is a sweet jam with a very apt title. Thanks for another wonderful episode.
yes! showing some keeley love! i have three keeley pedals on my board and they are mainstays for sure
The Oxblood and the Red Dirt are my favorite Keeley pedals. I also bought a Caverns to have a reverb and delay in one to use on a smaller board, and it quickly permanent home on my main board.
That is by far the best use of a clip of evil Spock I have ever seen. The subtle overlay of the phaser stompbox on top of the transporter console really sold it.
mine is my Always on 4 knob compressor...i play a Tele with a 1968 fender super reverb and we play Country and this pedal is a must have ..thank you Mr. Keeley
I’ve gone through a few delay pedals but nothing has ever come close to the Mag Echo. The Modulation is killer and adds such a sweet vibe, especially soloing on the neck pick up from 10th fret upwards. Massive fan of it and to see it here was great! I do like the D&M drive too - great dual OD pedal! Cheers
4:00 Gotta admit i love that drumming.
well done guys!
Happy 20th To Robert and team. The Eccos and Monterey are my 2 Keeley favorites. Thanks Josh!
New JHS show vid! Best Friday lunch ever!
Glad you came in with the sd-9 at the end! Most underrated....
Good to see the Dynatrem! Great harmonic trem sound, if a little noisy. I never even use the other tremolo settings
"Sonar So Good" was actually really good - musical and yet great use of FX. Would love to hear this fully fleshed out into an entire song!
I still use a Keeley Fuzz Head. It's my go to color boost pedal for humbuckers. I turned down the internal gain control, changed the tone capacitor to the .015uf cap and keep it switched to germanium. Set the fuzz control to 0 and push the amp with the head control. I'm using a Fender '57 custom low power twin reissue set to the edge of breakup and this pedal shines. Very transparent and touch sensitive. I love it.
Robert Keeley is like an elf of pedal world. He's everywhere fixing and designing this and that. I suppose pedal uncle too.
I have 2 of the old silver 4 knob compressors. What a magnificent pedal. I love all his stuff and need like 10 more things.
Great album time 🤘🏽
Love my Keeley modded MT-2.
I love this! More love letters to other pedal makers/brands! I'd love to see your favorite Wampler pedals.
Love the shirt. Hope you get one saying Nick soon.
I have a Keeley modded Boss Tremolo. MVP on my pedalboard for over 15 years now! Will never let it go!
I love the Keeley Tone Workstation! Fantastic pedal!
I got a Memphis Sun from Keeley, and I love it. Pure Rock’n Roll.
Love my Keeley pedals. I've managed to pick up a Super Phat Mod, Caverns V2 and Fuzz Bender all in the special edition "Canadian Plaid" graphic. I'll never let them go. (And the SPM sounds huge in a chain with a Morning Glory!)
I have the super phat mod. And I’ve had my eye on the fuzz bender for a long time. But I also want the muffuletta. Ugh. So many pedals.
I just got a Boss Katana Mk 2 50 watt and I love mixing my pedals with it's effect. Now I gotta check out the software for it.
Watching while unboxing my Keeley Tone Workstation
I love my Omni Reverb. Gorgeous plate, super powerful spring, extremely usable room verb. I love that they are all powerful, I rarely go beyond 50% but it's there for those times when you need to go cuh-ray-zee!
You guys are the only show that I wish I could jam out on bass.
I was sitting on a fence about getting the Oxblood for several years and managed to buy a used one not long ago. It has quickly become one of my favourite distortions - with the diode switch to the right it does an incredible "baritone growl", which is my favourite type of distortion, but it changes into a singing, at times synth like distortion when you go up the neck. Really dig it.
I got the Java when it was only months old; same for the four knob compressor. I still have both. I was going to buy several more JHS pedals, but after watching this excellent presentation I realize it would be far better to get a few Keeley pedals. Thanks Josh.
I absolutely love Keeley pedals!
My most used is the theme based MemphisSun pedal. Perfect for old style Rock and Rockabilly, even singing over it is fun.
I had number 45 of the original tap tempo green phaser. Loved it so much. It was stolen from me along with all my gear and Robert offered to replace it when I saw him one time and I never took him up on it, but I miss that pedal. I've still got a few Keeley custom cases around to lol.
I got a Filaments for my birthday. Great distortion pedal! All sorts of great tones in there!
After reading a review on the Fuzzbender I bought one and was hooked (addicted?) on Keeley pedals. Caverns is probably my fav, although Eccos is next on my buy list which could, or could not, replace it. That shimmer, though. So good. Shout out to the Trem o verb too!
I have the keeley dyno my roto and I absolutely love it. I’ve got my eye on the Memphis sun and vibe o verb as well
I love watching these videos.
Nice job, Josh and colleagues. My favorite Keeley pedals: Super Phat Mod, Nova Wah (a two fixed position Q filter to emulate a precisely parked wah in two different places and an easy way to pretend to be Clapton on Tales of Brave Ulysses), and the Bubble Tron (mommy was a filter pedal; daddy was a phase). Honorable mention: Memphis Sun (two parts slapback, one part room reverb, and a dash of double track) and Verb-O-Trem (harmonic trem, amplitude trem, vibrato plus plate or spring verb).
How is the Loomer not in here?
Just got a Synth-1 a few days ago. Thing is wild, a little hard to get to know at first but once you do 🤯 great pedal!!
I'm glad I found this video while diving into the Keeley pedal demos.
I have been on the fence about grabbing a Mag Echo for a while but wasn't quite sure since I already have 3 delay pedals. Though I do have a need for a single Delay/Reverb unit that the Caverns pedal would definitely fill with the Mag Echo along with it.
I just want a single pedal to leave hookd up to one of my half-stacks for ambient tones for practice and studio stuff, originally looking at the Flux Echo, and I think this one fits that need perfectly with a lot of the delay/reverb sounds I like.
When I finally pull the trigger on that joint delay/reverb, it's going to be the Carverns pedal.
Around 5 years ago I bought a Keeley C2 2-knob Compressor from a pawn shop for $10. The unfinished encasement was so unassuming that the shop likely didn't bother to look up the going resale value. I had never played with a compressor and knew absolutely nothing about them. I quickly found that I had never sounded better. it is now my very favorite effect. Once you play a Keeley Compressor, no other compressor will do (errrr.... except those made by JHS, of course). Josh, thank you for that video explaining compression and how to use compressors! I refer back to that (and the boost video) very frequently.
That first jam reminded me of "Anyway" by An Emotional Fish from the 1990 EP, Celebrate. They are from Ireland. It may be generic now, but back then it felt new and cool. Still love that EP. Also, many people forget that there was a bass shortage in mixing and mastering rooms back then. You can really hear it on this EP.
Asked for the Caverns V2 for my birthday. So glad it's on this list because I always your opinion is great and now I know it's the right choice. Love the t-shirt, where can I get one?
The shirts aren't in production anymore. Sorry!
"I don't know what's going to happen and neither do you, that's why we're here" that cracked me up. Go clown boy go...
Great episode! One of my all-time favorite pedal combinations is the Keeley Son of Fuzz Head with the BOSS CE-2w. Want the David Gilmour sound? This gets it!
I use a Mini Compressor and a Verb-o-trem. I love them. The compressor is super easy to use for fools like myself and I needed a proper tremolo and a reverb because the reverb on my marshall was broken so this is an amazing combo for my needs. Amazing pedals!
I love this format. Plus Joshua can we throw back to this once or twice?
Love my Keeley Hooke Reverb on bank 2, Black Panel Trem, Magnatone Vibe, long and short tank spring reverb, or spring/plate blend on one pedal.
Generic 90s radio hit is wonderful. Josh I love your original stuff.
I'd absolutely love to watch an episode about darkglass, those pedals are pure bass wizardry.
Yeah and no one seems to know what kind of circuit it is or what its based on
It ain't a sexy effect, but damn, if the Keeley Compressor+ ain't amazing. Definitely an always-on pedal for me
I have the dynatrem. Took a while to learn how to fit it in musically, but now staple on my board.
When you jammed on the Super Phat Mod and the Caverns I was expecting shoegaze, and instead we got “Generic ‘90s Radio Hit” 😂. Anyway, I have the Realizer and the Eccos and love them. Looks like I’ll have to explore some more of Keeley’s stuff
I have the Monterey, such a helpful pedal. All analog, Two transistor fuzz on one side, Octave up or down with a combination of Univibe, or lesley, or auto wah on the other side. Perfect for Jimi Hendrix stuff.
I pretty much gave up on compressors until I tried the Keely Bassist. I use it more like a limiter, in front of my pre-amp/DI.
I can have a limit without losing the lower end of the dynamic range. Wonderful.
I got 20 minutes with an Eccos and it's one of the best pedal experiences I've Ever had. First ever time with a Keeley pedal and I was more than amazed
The Synth 1 is now on my radar. Thanks. Also highly agree that the Ibanez SD-9 is highly even criminally underrated (damn near unknown by many).
Well bloody hell !! I assumed you had revived the budget ‘John Hornby Skewes ( JHS brand over here) ‘ pedal / instruments maker in the U.K. …. My first distortion pedal in 86 was a JHS ( not one of yours) I thought you’d bought the brand but Wikipedia just educated … never the less I am now trying to buy that old distortion as it’s piqued my nostalgia ! Great show s as always
Probably my favorite episode yet
