Even though I love BOSS pedals, I never cared much for the DS-1 Distortion. However, about 2 months ago, I came across an early 2000's DS-1, (in the box with all the box candy!!), at a yard sale for $25. I was thrilled when I opened the box and it had the Analogman sticker on it! I truly love this pedal! It has waaaaay more mid range to it now. It is a mainstay on my board. Side note: at that very same yard sale, I ended up with a mid-2000's EHX Small Clone, a Digitech Bad Monkey, (better than I thought it would be!), a Line 6 Roto Machine, and finally, the star of the show: a 1982 BOSS CE-2 Chorus in MINT condition, also with the box and candy!!! I gave $115 for everything, (including the $25 for the DS-1). I'll never stumble on a deal like that again...
That was very cool! Mike has been a great friend going back to the 90's. I love his stuff, and I still a Bi-Comp and an Analog Man Chorus on my pedalboard.
I'm kicking myself for not getting a sunface fuzz back in 2014, but I did manage to get my hands on a foxrox cc2 fuzz that was modded with a nkt-275. I have several AM/fox pedals. :)
My wife could care less about guitar pedals, but even she is hooked on the JHS videos! She likes his sense of humor and enthusiasm. Also, Nick is becoming the shows secret weapon. He is really becoming a star!
I opened for the Toadies in 2001 at a festival in Austin, TX. After a 45 min delay due to a rainstorm, they opened the show with "I Come From the Water". Great band, great musicians!
This might be my favorite of your surveys of other pedal makers. I do so appreciate your generosity of attention and spirit. + the drummer freak out was hilarious!
Josh, you are one of the classiest persons in existence! You give a lot of attention and credit to competitors! We benefit from your fair and honest coverage of so many pedals.
I've never met Mike in person, but I've known him and have used his pedals and mods since 2000. He builds fantastic stuff and it's just a fun loving guy who loves music. I've still got the chorus he built me. It was the first one to have a three way depth switch and isn't in the standard box. Love it
I know I mentioned this before... Josh 's fresh sounding riffs are sooo unique! 5 billion guitar players (including me) would come up with blues rock riffs we already heard 5 billion times before. 😊
Mike is a kick-ass dude who makes kick-ass pedals and waiting 17 months for my King of Tone was well worth it. It is not over-priced (unless you find a gouger on ebay/Reverb) and, much like the Klon, it's not Mike who is responsible for the stupid resale pricing. I say, get on the list and then just go about your life until you get your email!
His personality and customer service, overrated (he's no where near as friendly or patient as he's often made out to be. I'm not saying he HAS to be, I'm just saying). His pedals, also overrated. They're not "bad" by any stretch, some are really excellent. Particularly his modded Boss and Maxon pedals and the KOT. I'm just saying they're just overrated, over mythologized. I own and have owned at least 1,000 pedals over the last 25+ years. His fuzzes have nothing on builders like Pigdog, Castledine and D*A*M and certainly aren't as sturdily built. Of the about 50 Analogman pedals (including modded pedals) I've had at least a quarter of them have janky footswitches, shitty solder joints and need to be repaired within a year or two. At times alot of stuff gets built in a pretty slapdash manner because he's backed up on orders. Getting back to his Sun Faces, printed circuit board fuzzes will never sounds as good as point to point hand wired. So and so said different? They're wrong and they likely sell pedals with printed circuit boards. This is not to "slag" Analogman at all even though I probably come off like a prick. His pedals sound really good and his website is a fantastic resource. It's just to say that people need to chill because his "legend" has been blown up like a fun house jumper.
@KC Although to be fair, "anyone" can build a fuzz face, it's the artists who can tune them to the perfect balance of gain, "spit," low noise floor and EQ. Analogman is AIGHT at best.
I love the Prince of Tone! I keep it as an always on because I love the shape it has and it’s extremely touch responsive and keeps everything right where I want it
I've been singing the praises of Analog.Man's AstroTone fuzz in every gear comments section and at every gig I ever get near. An absolutely amazing fuzz pedal for those of us who can't deal with most fuzzes.
My first concert ever was The Toadies when Rubberneck hit the airwaves. Still one of my favorite albums and love these guys. Thanks for picking this album.
Huge Analogman fan! Since I live in CT, I’ve been to the shop a number of times. Lucky enough to have most of the pedals you mention in this vid. Mike P is the best! Thanks Josh!
Hey Josh, I have a Muffuletta coming my way and I can't wait to get my hands on it. This was an amazing video. I wish people who run businesses, in any industry, could conduct themselves in the same you have here....they mostly act like they are competing with everyone. It is obvious you love what you do and this was a hell of a tribute. Thank you for sharing what you know.
it's like you're making these videos just for me! I came across a few AM pedals recently and didn't know much about them, then this video popped up! Thanks!

"Tyler" has always been my favorite too. In my area of western MA the local "modern rock" radio station started playing "BAckslider" before any of the other singles from that record and my friends and I all fell in love with the band. At the end of my first guitar lesson my teacher told me to come in next time with a song I wanted to learn, so I came in next weekend asking him to teach me "Backslider" and I can still remember him listening to the opening riff one time and then playing it. I was blown away that he could do that and I never forgot that feeling. At that time my mother, who had become a born again Christian a few years before this, was having issues with some of the people at the church we were going to and this song came on in the car one day and me, not knowing what a Backslider was, started turning it up. After it was finished she told me what it meant and that it applied to her etc etc. That whole record had such a tremendous impact on me during that time in my life and it was a nice surprise to see it mentioned here out of the blue like. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Edit: grammer
This may be my favorite video from Josh’s channel so far. The over the top drum solo part during the Astro tone was great. I love analog man and love this channel. Very enjoyable
One of my favorite concerts from High School was Bush/Hum/The Toadies, 2 Sep 1995, Eagles Ballroom, Milwaukee, WI. That year Possum Kingdom was inescapable, we seriously at one point changed to three different radio stations one night to hear it back/back/back. Fun song to play and goes over well with most crowds in most cover venues. Cheers.
I love the Toadies! Away might be my favorite on this one but it's so hard to choose. Such an underrated band! Todd Lewis (singer) had a band with Taz from Reverend Horton Heat called The Burden Brothers that was equally as amazing in a different way.
@@adamnevermind7013 The Burden Brotghers records are great! More kick ass rock and roll. Also check out DOOSU from dallas. Guitarist from Burden brother was also in thaty band. Their album Feng Shui is one of my all time top 5 records.
Great video as always! I love that Toadies record and need that vinyl. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first record my Baptist preacher father threw away because of song titles like "I come from the water" and "Backslider".
One word: ARDX20 with Amaze0 or Amaze1. The tone in this delay is head turningly good and you also get a cool little greeting from DigitalMan each time the Amaze starts up.
Prince of Tone is the Red Side of the King. I’ve had two of them, and am on my second King of Tone, which I waited over five years for. Love it! Sounds great!
Thank you for turning me on to the Astro Tone Fuzz. It really does sound more like a Distortion than a Fuzz. It also floors me that the original circuit was created in 1966. I’m kinda surprised that this pedal in its original iteration didn’t take off. It really did offer something way different when compared to everything else available at the time.
I listened to that album for years before I realized that Possum Kingdom was about a serial killer! Some of my favorite riffs, they must have distracted me from the lyrics! I have had the pleasure of meeting Mike P and being invited to his shop a couple times to check out his operation and test some pedals. I have never heard one I didn’t like. You couldn’t ask for a nicer guy, super cool, and he has been a great influence on my own journey into pedal making. Thanks for the great video 🎸
The last 2 or 3 vids have been the best playing they've ever done. I loved to see em switching out on the pedal colors vid. Nick is a pretty decent guitarist and Josh can hold down the pots and pans
possum kingdom was my go to song whenever i had a guitar amongst a group of friends or at school. The rhythm of its guitars and the matched key in vocals helped me shine. I'm stoked to hear it's on vinyl and will be keeping an eye out. Thanks again to all of you for making these awesome vids. keep up the good work. Matthew Romero
I saw them/Toadies several years before their hit at a small video arcade in the burbs around Dallas. Looked like they were still in or just out of HS and it was all punk rock. Always good to see local folks make something of themselves. As always, you got good taste.
"Boutique" generally refers to selective use of materials so as to achieve some desired end-product that is optimal in some way, or simply tailored to a customer. Some might consider it equivalent to "bespoke" at times; essentially the difference between a suit provided by a tailor, compared to off-the-rack from K-Mart. Insomuch as Mike makes use of germanium transistors and other selected components at times, it's fair to consider his pedals as "boutique".
@@steverherb I suspect he has probably moved beyond that, since many things that were unavailable *except* as NOS for a number of years, have been resurrected. But yes, there was a lengthy period during which NOS BBDs were pretty much your ONLY choice for some things. One always needs to keep in mind that manufacturers have to factor in the availability and sustainability of the materials required for a given product, before launching it. One can probably rely on being able to source NOS germanium transistors or BBDs, power tubes or rare woods, if the objective is to produce maybe a few hundred pedals, amps, or guitars during the total lifespan of the product line. But if the goal is producing thousands to ship off to every music store world-wide, and send as freebies to every RUclips reviewer out there, NOS *anything* is going to be nigh impossible to sustain. You will never see Boss using germanium transistors unless they buy a factory that used to make them and resurrect production. Their volume needs are simply too large. They would never release a product that they only anticipate ever making and selling 300 of, unless it was a $5000 synth.. Mike has the advantage of being small. Sometimes being "boutique" lets you get away with things that major manufacturers are thoroughly capable of doing, technically, but unable to produce in the quantities expected. If you have the chance, read up on what happened to Electro-Harmonix when Mike Matthews found he was being blocked from sourcing Panasonic BBDs he needed for his flagship Memory Man pedal, some 30 years back.
The Toadies are amazing! Thank you for picking this record. It’s one of my favorites from when I was younger. They still record and release great new music. I wish I was closer to Texas because I would love to go to Dia De Los Toadies.
Man this is a good clip I wish you played twice as long on this. That Astro Tone was ridiculous. and the Prince of tone was sweet as well. That NKT was awesome as well. All of these tones feel like time travel to me.
Possum Kindom is one of those albums that for me really go me into alternative rock. It also got me to really listen to songs and learn how to play all the parts. When I met them like 6ish years ago after seeing them on their 20th anniversary tour. I was amazed at how down to earth they are.
I love the toadies and rubberneck. Saw them a few years ago and they freaking killed it live. Ended with Tyler. I burn and away we’re also radio hits. Whoever gets that record will love it. I’ve always had a connection with them after seeing in their one video that the singer had a Gibson “the Paul”, just like me. It was the only Gibson I could afford as a young lad. Great guitar, great band and seriously great company with Analogman. You’re not too bad either Josh and JHS fam.
Love that Toadies album. Friends and I regularly karaoke tunes off it. Also, I've been playing guitar for 23 years and have never really been into pedals... Used my amp gain or an mxr od and nothing else for years... Until I started watching this channel. Now I have many pedals, including some JHS, and am always on the hunt for more. Thanks for expanding my guitar tone world, JHS!
I don't comment much, but that Toadies record is actually pretty special to me... in fact, when the 90's alternative cover band my wife and I hired to play our wedding told us they would learn one song just for us, we chose Possum Kingdom. It was awesome, by the way. Anyway, great video as always.
Dig the episode, Josh. The Beano Boost was the first pedal I ordered and had to wait for. It was like he was personally making this killer pedal for me. Well, I guess that's what he was actually doing. I"m loving the JHS Crayon right now. A year ago I started watching your show and now I'm having so much fun with a variety of pedals.
The Beano Boost is one of those must have pedals. Doubly so if you're using a 60s style British amp. Marshalls, Voxes, Laneys. They can all get very dark and muddy when pushed into overdrive. Even more so with a fuzz doing its thing. The Rangemaster was invented to bring a little brightness back. So having that in a very pedal board friendly package is just nice.
I have the Black variant of the Astro Tone. Love it. Also, Toadies was my first rock concert, they opened for White Zombie. Loved it. Love your show. Love Ananlogman.
Love my Astro tone fuzz and my JUICER!!! Analog Mike is the best! Can’t wait to come to the top of KOT list I think I’ll be waiting 8-12 months more ! Prince of Tone is awesome.
Rubberneck is a fantastic record and Tyler is certainly one of my favorite songs from that record. I saw the Toadies in concert a few years ago and they were awesome. Keep up the great content!
I run my home made treble booster most of the time, just add a tone contour or a switch to change the coupling capacitors and adapt the curve to the type of pickups or guitars you use
RECORD TIME! Rubberneck is an album that ruled my world for more than a minute. In constant rotation in my car's cassette deck, it was the perfect soundtrack for driving fast in my early twenties. The guitar tones blew me away, in a time before the internet really caught on, I was obsessed with trying to recreate this sound. On a thin budget, it wasn't really possible on small, solid-state combos and Sound Tank pedals. But we made due. I remember the Toadies were opening for Corrosion of Conformity (?!) at a club in Boston. My friends and I took the train into the city for the show. They took the stage and immediately blew our hair back. Rocked so hard. When the set was done, we realized we had to run to the station to catch the last train out (train service did not run very late then). So we missed COC completely, which was a real bummer. But of all the shows I've attended, this was probably the most enthusiastically rocking one. They were having a blast playing this material, and we were eating it up. Good to see I'm not the only one carrying the love for Rubberneck!
One of the best records ever recorded! Tyler is definitely the stand out tracks for me. Graduated high school in 95 and this was the soundtrack to my summer and still a favorite. 🖤
I also have the red dot nkt germanium! That thing is a SUPER utility pedal. Id love to get my hands on the bc109. The clock artwork is a must for any D Gilmour fan, and im sure it sounds amazing. Ive been waiting about a yr and a half for an email back on the king of tone. I have no problem supporting him and his team.
I met my best friend during my senior year of high school when he was a freshman. Years later, I traveled home to see him graduate, and the first song we played after the long wait was "Possum Kingdom". Absolutely ruled.
I've been drooling over Analogman's pedals for a long time especially one of his Sunface NKTs but then I was introduced to Jesse Davies and ended up buying a King Tone Vintage Fuzz and I absolutely love it!! Plus having both NKT275 and AC128 gives you two fuzz pedals in one. And yes they are two different animals imo. All that being said I'm still chasing a couple Analogman Pedals
Rubberneck is a great, great call Josh, nicely done. I’m never a big fanboy of the hits but Possum Kingdom was great, I personally loved the lead off track (Mexican Hairless) and Quitter-so much raw energy. Thanks for your channel too man, I love the content and have learned a ton watching your videos!!
No delay/amazeo love?! I also love the white dot nkt version of the sun face. Little lower gain than the red dot. Even rarer from his pedals but more controllable/smooth to me
Analog Man has some great pedals. I'll definitely check his gear out. I love that first Toadies album. My two favorite songs from 'Possum Kingdom' are 'Backslider' and 'Happy Face.' They're so guttural and yet groovy. I love the lyrics to 'Happy Face' 'cause it all deals with fighting back against tormentors. 'Tyler' is also great, especially with that siren-style playing at the open. And that final track, 'I Burn,' is phenomenal. It's a shame that The Toadies had so many problems, they could've been huge had they made more records in the 90's. But hey, we got some great stuff in the 2000's, so it's not all lost. If you haven't heard their other records, Josh, you should check them out. Especially 2017's 'The Lower Side Of Uptown.' It's a great Rock album.
Im from Dallas, and have always held up Darrel Herbert as one of the most raunchy yet beautiful guitar players of the time. Who doesnt love a locking nut fender
Thank you for hooking up a DS-1 to a (sort of) Small Clone. That's easily my favorite guitar sound of all time. Everyone needs to own a Small Clone. It's special.
My favorite definition of boutique was uttered by Analogue man himself, and I'm paraphrasing but...it's that the designer is making the choices for you. He thinks it sounds good like this, so rather than substitute a resistor with a pot and let you decide, he does the work of finding the sound and it's just done. It's easy to use and it sounds...not great but ...perfect. As the designer thinks of that pedal, it's perfect. Boutique isn't a lot of knobs so you can tweek all day, it's done for you in the vision of the designer. Experimental however is when yes, go nuts with the knobs. So...is Dr. Scientist boutique? That's the question. Is Snazzy Effects? IS LOVETONE???? ANSWER ME JOSH!!!!!! Is JHS?
His site still looks like the second or third site on the internet.
Its unbelievably bad.
@@TrippyTheShroom I mean it's an Internet site that lets you buy pedals and then they mail them to you. What else do you need? ;)

That's exactly what I thought when Josh was talking about it.
I love his website. Throwback to the old days. His FAQ is a particular favorite.

Wow. You came across a serious deal. The Boss Chorus alone but an Analogman modded DS-1 for $25? Wow. That’s so awesome. I would of been very happy.
Give them all to me. Tomorrow we'll meet at the parking lot
Sounds like one of the best yard sales ever

I'm not going to comment this or I might insult you out of envy. Oops! I'm SO happy for you ! 😁🤟
My King of Tone just arrived about two months ago. Beautiful pedal. I was on the wait list for two and a half years. Worth the wait and the price.
Can we take a minute and appreciate Nick for always going hard on the drums?! Kudos Nick! These episodes wouldn’t work without you!

Toadies’ “Rubberneck” is the reason I play guitar. Back in the day they had a website and posted tabs of their own songs. And half of it was wrong.

Great video as always! I love that Toadies record and need that vinyl. It holds a special place in my heart because it was the first record my Baptist preacher father threw away because of song titles like "I come from the water" and "Backslider".
3:55 that’s the Leslie West pedal. He used that on some of Mountain’s best riffs.
Loving the extra editing you guys are adding
One word: ARDX20 with Amaze0 or Amaze1. The tone in this delay is head turningly good and you also get a cool little greeting from DigitalMan each time the Amaze starts up.
The panel of nerds is not imaginary my friend.
Thanks for the great video 🎸
i like the nirvana/queen mashup. make that copyright algorithm short out.
What they played is my fave part of the video.
I still listen to Rubberneck all the time. Criminally under-appreciated.
Agreed! One of the most underrated albums of the 90s.
Very true. For example, Mike uses NOS BBD delay chips in his chorus pedals. You can then choose from several models and further customize them.
Man, I was JUUUUST thinking about getting a PoT. Now prices are going to skyrocket. Thanks Josh.
This channel has introduced me to so much new music.
Analogman DS-1 was my first "boutique" pedal. I now have and dig one with the mids knob.
Yup, Tyler is my favorite jam on that album... one of my all time favorite albums
When is that album coming out? you know...the one that has all those pedals central...and all those songs from JHS pedalshow...?
Not that you ever sound bad but exceptionally smooth playing in the first jam, and so on there josh
Loved the drum extravaganza.
The best I’ve heard Nick play.
I have to agree with you on the Astrotone, It's such a great pedal, works well for OD, Distortion, and Fuzz!
I saw the Toadies live in the 90’s, great show. Great tracks!
I always want more when your videos comes to the end... You guys are great!
I run my home made treble booster most of the time, just add a tone contour or a switch to change the coupling capacitors and adapt the curve to the type of pickups or guitars you use
These jams are rad and getting better with every vid!!!
I used to play along to Rubberneck start to finish - one of my favorites of all time
After waiting 2.5 years, I finally got my king of tone. Worth the wait, it's incredible.
Thank you for making my fridays a little bit better.
The videos recently have been so good. Keep up the good work!
Wow! I played on that Toadies record and I don't even have a vinyl copy of it. Haha. Love the channel Josh.
Is JHS?
I liked the Toadies Rubberneck album so much I ordered the CD. Keep up the good work Josh!
Sun Lion, best Mike pedal, ever! Just found your videos, fantastic. Love your myth busters, spot on!
He resurrected my dead TS9 over 20 years ago with a 808 mod and Tru Bypass switch. Still playing it! I love that pedal!
wonderful
Finally! Now I can have my friday lunch while watching the Friday videos, thanks, Josh. Very nice
