I have one of those Marshall Bluesbreaker pedals and it is simply amazing! I got it at a garage sale back in the day for like $20. Just like I got one of the original long dash DS-1’s with the clear switch and a very very low serial number that dates it to 1978 at a garage sale in the mid 80’s for $20. It sounds amazing and nothing like a regular DS-1. Both pedals are amazing!
I tried to make a Bluesbreaker from a kit I bought. Didn't work when I finished it. Had to send it to you and you fixed it up for me. That's been over 10 years ago and I'm still using it. Thanks
In a way, I find these "in the band context" comparisons to be a lot more useful. I find myself loving specific pedal sounds when demoed only to not care for them in certain contexts. You have the guitar and amp which make a difference, but also it can be hard to understand how a sound will actually sound in the mix of the rest of the instruments when you're only listening to the guitar. It's fun to listen to guitar only and hear all the details, but I think putting it in a mix is more useful. Of course, it's also a lot more work to record, which is probably why we don't see this often with pedal demos. So thanks. I like these. Keep it up!
that Snouse though.....ridiculously similar to the original Bluesbreaker, then the presence knob to add a little brilliance. Thank you for this video. I convinced myself I need the Analogman King of Tone because, well no explanation needed, it's the King of Tone pun intended. But this video provided me with so many other good alternatives and helped me discover the Snouse. I actually already have a Morning Glory V4 and thought I needed the King of Tone because it's such a unicorn pedal, no where near the unicorn level of the original Klon, but everyone still wants one. Idk what magic potion they're drinking at Snouse but the did such a good job in replicating the tone from the original Marshall Black Box Bluesbreaker, and the added brilliance feature really gives it the Marshall feel. I also respect you Josh, for not trying to only market JHS pedals and really pay your respects to other pedal companies, I take my hat off to you for that. Your unbiased view on effects and tone is what keeps me watching your vlogs and actually makes me want to buy more JHS pedals. Good job, keep doing what you're doing man! They've bought it back in the days and it's an irreplaceable treasure to me. Thank you JHS for doing this video.

Thanks for that. I knew setting it is complicated because everything effects everything in the blues breaker.
JHS makes solid stuff. King of Tone is however a really special circuit. It’s my most important pedal along with my Maxon PH-350 Phaser. Everybody should have at least one JHS pedal though....mine is the Pulp n Peel. Paired with some of the wonderful modern delays that Strymon etc are doing, anything you are missing in the “it almost sounds like tape” realm is elevated from that orange squeezer circuit into virtually sounding like tape. It’s very musical. I prefer it to the Cali even.
Josh, this is like... My favourite video ever... Not only some cool information I was hoping you would talk about some day, but also it was the funniest thing ever... Thanks for sharing your awesomeness!!!
I'm using the Charlie Brown more often than the MG these days, it really does the low-gain thing better than most other high-gain JTM "distortion" pedals. It likes my modern-style (kinda bright) Duncan-Designed humbuggies as well. For high-gain JTM/Plexi stuff I'm using either a Jetter Gain Stage Black (AC/DC in box, no BS) or Greer Amps Little Samson.
Just got a CB. Great tone, really. I think you get better tone using the Charlie Brown and another mild overdrive (amp or pedal) than by using a pedal with more gain.
I swear, you and Seth Rogan could make an epic movie!!! Seriously I'd buy the tickets now! Fantastic job as always. Just bought a JHS LBAB for my Hot Rod Deluxe and it changed the course of my life, thank you as simple as it is. Ready for more
Great video. The pedals do sound somewhat like the amp but with their own character. You make some of the best videos on here because you always give attention to other makers and - it has to be said - you're a complete gearhead and gear geek, which is a good thing.
I dug the jam with the Charlie Brown... definitely do a bluesbreaker comparison video! My super cheap used find of a bluesbreaker clone by Chicago Stompworks is always on, it may not be a morning glory, but it’s a desert island pedal for sure.
* Important footnote: Eric's Dallas Rangemaster treble booster was pictured on top of his JTM45, so that's part of the sound too (I have an Analogman Beano Boost clone)
If you’re talking about Clapton, there is no picture of him using a treble booster. He says he never used one. The engineer says he never used one. It’s a myth he used one. The Beano record sound is a Les Paul with PAF’s into a dimed Blues Breaker amp. It’s inaccurately documented that he used a range master or fuzz at different points. Straight to amp.
Not only do you make great pedals, you are a super nice guy. I think that is cool that you used to live in Tupelo, MS former home of the King Elvis Presley.
Here is a comprehensive list of the best pedal for each genre: Rock: Boss DS-1 Blues: Boss DS-1 Jazz: Boss DS-1 Reggae: Boss DS-1 Country: Boss DS-1 Metal: Boss DS-1 Folk: Boss DS-1 Classical: Boss DS-1 8-bit Covers: Boss DS-1 EDM: Boss DS-1 Barbershop Quartet: Boss DS-1
Got a great price on a Rat on craigslist and the guy had Bluesbreaker and 1971 Colorsound Overdriver clones for real cheap so i bought those too. From the first second that i played through the Blooze Machine i was floored. I use it as an always on or boost. What a great sound! Changes everything!
I play bass and love hearing all the great pedals, and I love to ride my bicycle . Can you do a bike check on all your bikes also please. Since seeing your dirty kanza t shirt I thought would ask. Many thanks
The Expandora is basically 2 Proco Rats in a box. I love it. I do not like the Kilt because it is to refined. Nothing wrong with it as a dirt pedal ...it just looses that tear your face quality of the Expandora! Great idea for a show Pat!
Just got my Blues Breaker pedal from eBay. Playing it with a Fender Custom Shop '50s Strat into a Fender Deluxe "The Edge". It sounds AMAZING! Thanks for introducing me to this pedal Josh. I love all your videos and every once in a while you even inspire me to buy a pedal or two. ; )
Have you ever broken down Hendrix’s Marshall amp?I know PRS took one head and dialed in a new creation and are asking over 4 grand. I think Marshall has tried to reissue a hand wired Marshall , chasing Jimi’s live tone. What is out there today that can recreate his electric tone that won’t break the bank? Really always enjoy your work. It’s obvious you do what you love. Much love and appreciation. Just another lead guitar player from Texas✌🏻
John Mayer Continuum album is one of my desert island albums. The solo in “I don’t trust myself with loving you” is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. It’s simple but has that exceptional clean slightly pushed overdrive sound that is out of this world.
One very popular, almost iconic Danish guitar player was a Marshall user for decades. Sometimes you saw him playing through a half stack, sometimes a Blues Breaker combo. He settled down in America and only came to Denmark to play gigs, playing through whatever was available. One day he was faced with a Behringer amp - one of the better ones - and he was shocked how good sounds he could get out of it.
Very informative, and I appreciate how other pedal makers are mentioned with respect. This is for people who enjoy playing guitar and exploring all the options to find sounds they love.

Just got a CB. Great tone, really. I think you get better tone using the Charlie Brown and another mild overdrive (amp or pedal) than by using a pedal with more gain.
I have grown obsessed with this channel, such good stuff
I'm a bass player and I love your videos. Could do any video featuring bass pedals? That'd be so cool!
Yes! More bass content!
An episode of bass pedals would be sweeeet.
Glen fricker has all things bass covered.(I own a Westone thunder bass it's awesome) lol
Siiiiii dai !! I totally agreee.... everything about the bass would be over appreciated !!
Yup - us bass players love pedals too...
came hear after watching top 500 sweetwater pedal sales. love your contribution Josh!!! entertaining knowledge bombs!!
Can’t wait for you guys to record an album. I’m loving the crafty riffs!
Love the metaphysical freak-out(s) at the end of each segment. The BB is an ineffable musical enigma, shrouded in mystery, wrapped up in a taco.
I'm calling the song at 7:05, "Pavement Didn't Practice". No credit required.
lol perfect
😝 That’s a perfect name.
Pavement always sounded like they didn't practice...neat trick that.
You make the best gear videos ever. Period.
love the little history lessons
I swear, you and Seth Rogan could make an epic movie!!! Seriously I'd buy the tickets now! Fantastic job as always. Just bought a JHS LBAB for my Hot Rod Deluxe and it changed the course of my life, thank you as simple as it is. Ready for more
Julian Lage has used the Morning Glory with his trio for years. He's. A. Monster. Player.
He redefines "monster". Lord have mercy.
The design on the Charlie Brown is so great!
Clapton always said that the "1" amp he used for those recordings was stolen shortly after, and has never found another one which sounded like it.
Great video. The pedals do sound somewhat like the amp but with their own character. You make some of the best videos on here because you always give attention to other makers and - it has to be said - you're a complete gearhead and gear geek, which is a good thing.
@josh - one of your best videos ever :) Now I have to build a BB clone. Or buy one, now that I know what the Charlie Brown is ...
Excellent video. Really great fun. I love the Charlie Brown...
I dug the jam with the Charlie Brown... definitely do a bluesbreaker comparison video! My super cheap used find of a bluesbreaker clone by Chicago Stompworks is always on, it may not be a morning glory, but it’s a desert island pedal for sure.
Your channel is the best channel about pedals, thank you very much!
Finally! Josh plays one his Sovtek amps! Sovtek amp video coming soon?!
Mig 60 was tits. The JCM900 2500 I bought to replace it is the only reason I don't regret losing it, but similar sounds.
I love watching these older videos. That wonderful era before the Kemper……
….;-)
OMG. Bruce WIllis was the Blues Breaker THE WHOLE TIME !
This channel is a consistent source of joy for me. Seriously great.
Always fun to see the moment when the acid hits.
Man, you blew my mind with that episode. First time high in a year and you throw that at me? Thanks!
Here is a comprehensive list of the best pedal for each genre:

You ain't wrong
I dunno bout that one fam
@@Chris-mc2dt Ah, a non-believer. Do you have a minute to speak with me about our Lord and Savior DS-1?
Pete Miffle I don’t think a minute to speak would change either of our minds. It kinda boils down to a matter of taste.
But sure, I’ll bite.
Brilliant take it you love that pedal
The last jam was tight! Well done lads! All good stuff!
I fucking love these vids. Great info about stuff I’m interested in. Keep up the great work Josh!
Many thanks
This dude is so genuine...
I would love to hear the story behind the Bixonic Expandora and what happened to it. Of course, you can connect it to the Kilt.
The Expandora is basically 2 Proco Rats in a box. I love it. I do not like the Kilt because it is to refined. Nothing wrong with it as a dirt pedal ...it just looses that tear your face quality of the Expandora! Great idea for a show Pat!
I love the expandora, had no idea it was rats! Best drive pedal ever
This guy and wampler do a great thing informing people about what they buy
John Mayer Continuum album is one of my desert island albums. The solo in “I don’t trust myself with loving you” is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. It’s simple but has that exceptional clean slightly pushed overdrive sound that is out of this world.
THIS was the exact solo that made me start chasing tone!
This is one of your best episodes! Fantastic
Just loved that end hahaha, I have a friend always gets that crazy thinking to much 😂
Wow, nice to see you here man. Great fan of JHS Pedals and of your work!!
Please do a video on the Marshall Guv'nor. That pedal needs more love.
Very informative, and I appreciate how other pedal makers are mentioned with respect. This is for people who enjoy playing guitar and exploring all the options to find sounds they love.
