Third, I'm glad you threw the Fulltone Fulldrive on the list - my only suggestion would have been to make it the Fulldrive 3, as it has to be the biggest bang-for-your-buck overdrive out there! Thanks again for the great show!
@@shaunw9270 Hey Shaun. It's an overdrive pedal for the front of the amp. I found out about it because one of the guys in Luna had one, and then this demo kind of sealed it for me: ruclips.net/video/GAvBZfugX_k/видео.html
I had a Barber LTD that sounded great with my Nashville with Dynasonics. Cool pedals. I stopped playing for a bit and turned over most of my pedals. That may be THE one I regret selling.
I would LOVE a whole episode on or with David Barber! I jumped on the original release of the Gain Changer and have always considered it a "never sell no matter what" pedal. I've also had or tested many of his others but that one in particular just totally does it for me.
Bruce Morris has never heard them and c recently played one while checking out a new guitar, and immediately ordered one whole in an Uber on the way home, the Ltd sounds fantastic!
I agree with this 100%. I have every version of the Direct Drive, a couple of the different versions of compression (oldest one is the best), the BUSS, a Gain Changer, a Small Fry, you get it. The cleanest and most natural sounding stuff across the board. For boutique, it's very reasonable and lots of flexibility in sound. Sorry, lots of coffee!
Just bought the Direct Drive ( green version ) and it’s an incredibly good pedal. I think it’s in the top 3 over drives I’ve ever played. The Double Barrel is also in that top 3 along with a TS808.
My 2204 clone sounds no better than my v2 Barber Compact Direct Drive into a clean channel when you play em through the same speakers. Crazy good pedal
Last Wednesday o had my first gig since tuning into this channel. All your tips on stacking overdrives and pedal demos etc etc really shaped my setup and man, was I happy. Solos cut through as I use the ehx soul food on high gain setting, tremelo after delay and with and without chorus and many other things. Thanks a bunch you made a huge impact on my performance and I'm still buzzing with excitement !
Love how you embrace other brands and teach us a lot about them! That’s why I love JHS pedals as honest as their founder and sound great! I wish all companies and people supported each other as well as you do ; we may have a better world !
I believe your Boss/JHS Angry Driver is a hugely underrated overdrive. I just bought one and it really blew me away. I consider it one of the best 2 or 3 Boss pedals ever and I'm dead serious. I'm not saying the Angry Driver is unknown to most, but it is SO good it deserves much more exposure and it needs to be held in the highest regard. 100% honest.
Agreed. Angry Driver has been a staple of my sound since it came out. B-J and Parallel modes are out of this world. Too bad they didn't make it in a 2 switch configuration, it would have been perfect.
Yes, do a Barber episode. As far as I know, he was the first pedal maker to put a blend on a compressor pedal with the Tone Press. Pretty soon that became the norm. For that alone he warrants an episode.
Great recommendations as always, Josh. +1 on that Barber episode. Been playing all versions of his LTD series (including the Gain Changer) since 2014 and have yet to find a better drive. He deserves all the love he gan get
Please, please, please Josh...... do a video on Barber. They are awesome pedals , and they so deserve some highlight!! I really treassure these theme videos. Met David Barber several times when I worked at a shop in Baltimore. Such a great guy. So knowledgeable. One of those people that understands what professional musicians want and need. The Tone Press is example #1 of why he needs to be better know.
Josh, I love your videos. They are so cool and so true. I graduated from High School in 1985, and I still remember those days of guitar, and of other things, and which your short films that you make, that make me feel good. And so as you say and I so agree with you that things have since then come so far, but, which at the same time, the instrument of our stringy love has never lost the incomparable value of its vibe. For we are all bards who only wish to return to the homeland of our petulant youths. Thank you for your videos, I really appreciate them, and I love them. Keep 'em comin'!!
The "LA Lady" Actually came from a film also named "LA Lady". A journey through the thoughts and memories, the obsessions and the disappointments of those who loved and pursued a woman called Los Angeles. The LA Lady pedal in the most parallel sense embodies various characters of drives in a span of 50 years. Yeah. Correct. I made that up.
Yes to a Barber episode. ... Underated OD: Boss OD2 (not currently available i know, but i measure other drives against it). The Barber Direct drive is VERY close to it.
You really NEED to do a show on (and maybe with, if he's up for it) Dave Barber! I've still never moved past using his 1/2 Gainer as my foundational/base drive pedal. And I'm just about to get a Gain Changer, and can't wait. It's still amazing to me how he never toots his own horn or does any visible promotion, but the sheer quality of his work just gets out into the world like that.
Definitely do a Dave Barber episode... I’ve been using his pedals for over a decade and they never leave my board. He is the only builder that I own several of his ODs... different years, different versions of his Gain Changer (LTD circuit) and Direct Drive - all incredible different flavors. I have 3 gigging boards right now. There is a Barber OD on all of them. He also makes a fantastic compressor and he made the best clean boost I’ve ever used if you can find one (out of my cold, dead hands...lol), the Launch Pad...
I have about 7 Barber Electronics pedals, my favorite ever. Looking forward to an interview with David. I actually run into Ronnie (Santmeyer) every now and then at gigs and we communicate every so often. His work with developing this stuff is truly inspiring. The Gain Changer paired with the Direct Drive............... like heaven.
John Cusack is one of the nicest people I have met. I used to work at a music store in the area he lives in and he came in sometimes. We had some very cool conversations.
I sent a letter w specs for a univibe. I know you probably get so many that you dont have time for them all. The ideas are a gift from me for all these free videos of awesome pedals. Also, i absolutely am enamored by my PG-14. TY, Josh and staff!!!
Have you ever done a video explaining the ins and outs of the Boss Blues Driver? I’ve had one on my board for 20 years and can’t find a reason to take it off. I’d love to know more about it!
Would love to see you do something with Barber stuff. Criminally underrated. I’m a huge fan of his work. The Tone Press and Direct Drive never leave my board. The new v4 Direct Drive is insanely good. YES to a Barber episode!!
Would love to see an episode on Barber. I’ve owned multiple versions of their Tone Press compressor over the years but I feel like I know very little about them even though they’ve been around for awhile.
Underrated overdrive to me is the Marshall Jackhammer. I never liked it in “distortion” mode but in overdrive mode with a Fender amp, it just did a great 70’s era Marshall JMP sound.
Josh, always love your vids. Appreciate that they aren't just sales vids for your stuff. You and Brian Wampler both are great about putting out informational vids, playing with various brands. Just promoting the pedal industry in general. Bravo
Subdecay Liquid Sunshine (orange version) is my favourite drive for a while now. It's not specifically a Tweed thing but it does a perfect edge of breakup with nice sag all the way to Crazy Horse exploding amp.
Was thrilled to see my beloved Riverside in the list. Apart from the overdrive, the key selling point on this one for me was the inclusion of switchable boost. This removed the need for a separate boost pedal for me. It is a little strange having firmware on your overdrive pedal, but this isn't your typical overdrive.
Wampler Euphoria is the most underrated overdrive ever. The specific reason why is in how it enters and exits breakup and adds a subtle compression to the signal. So smooth! I was looking for a pedal to do this for years until I finally cam across it. I am sure there are some like it, but man did I go through a lotttttt that are nothing like it from Wampler, EQD, and JHS. I should note that I did not make my way to the JHS Charlie Brown yet though, so one day I may try it out to compare.
So glad you covered Barber pedals. They are truly fantastic. I have three of them on my board (Gain Changer, Exacta Fuzz and the Direct Drive). I hardly see anyone else using them and everyone is missing out. Please get David on the show!
Very good selections. I agree with the Barber Gain Changer, I love that pedal! One more I think should have definitely been on the list is the Subdecay Liquid Sunshine Mk III
I own the Barber Gain Changer. I play it through a twin reverb and through a marshall 75 reverb. I use it for low gain stuff and to push other overdrives and distortion pedals. To me, it's by far the best overdrive I ever owned.
That Fender sounded great. Some brilliant stuff flying under the radar with the new Fender range. I have the Compuligist compressor/distortion pedal that I literally see nowhere. Sounds absolutely amazing through a Fender amp.
@@thBrilliantFool Mason Marangella the owner of vertex is a conman. he rebadged BBE Ben wahs and sold them as his own design. All his pedals are cloned of something else. Buy a maxon SD1
I'm an owner of the Walrus 385, and personally love it. It's my primary gain tone through a Supro Black Magick (or a 68 Custom Princeton, depending on the occasion). It's a brilliant pedal that does that thing of internally doubling its voltage for greater headroom, and it pushes amps on the edge of breakup into rich, gritty, slightly nasal territory. It can do clean/dirty boost ably, but it's so touch responsive that I like to get the drive around noon and use a combination of guitar volume and a Boss FB-2 to let it dance between red dirt and white light. It always tickles me when a piece of gear I own gets the JHS stamp of approval -- maybe my taste is better than I let on.
Yes PLEASE do a Barber episode!! One of my absolute favorite pedals i own is the Trifecta, but it's the only Barber I've ever been in the viscinity of.
great look, as usual. the clarity of your demos in these episodes is helpful (sounds like a pedal through an amp in a room! no backing tracks!). not the point, i realize, but here goes: top mounted jacks on standard size pedals where the power jack is between them is a nightmare.
My go to drive lately has been the Mojo Hand FX Rook Drive which is one half of their Odessa. I bought the Odessa and was blown away with the Rook side that I bought a separate Rook for my other board. The Magpie is the other half of the Odessa so props for mentioning that too.
The Southland is absolutely brilliant. 100% chance of me owning one one day. I was really hoping to see the MXR Custom Badass Modified O.D. on here. Loads of great mid to higher-gain settings while still letting the guitar shine through. Super underrated, should be a staple in any collection.
Yes to the MXR, use it as my primary gainstage for years. Beautiful "dense" gainstructure without getting muddy, highly recommended for a single coil guitar.
Yeaaah Josh!! I was thinking of suggesting The Suburbs to you, but you already heard it!! Killer band, killer album, one of the best. I really love the track Suburban War, one of my favourites from this band!
EHX Hot Wax is my bargain one stop shop; especially paired with the Behringer SF Fuzz - or more recently been using an EHX Green Russian; both also underrated. Hot Wax is a Crayon / BB pre style circuit first, on the right side. Then the super lovely Hot Tubes circuit on the left. Blend, tone control and awesome packaging / graphics. I even prefer the EHX Glove to the standard Boss Blues Driver and would use it over a Klone as an alternative drive on a board to the Hot Wax dual drive. EHX Drive pedals generally are underrated. Caline Blue Sky is an absolute bargain, sounds especially nice running off batteries - much cleaner. Do think the Strymon Riverside sounds so thick and good.
Great Video! Congrats. I agree with you in relation to the Charlie Brown, I've had several pedal from JHS and the CB (previous version) still blows my mind (along with the Morning Glory and Muffuletta.. ;)). Another underrated overdrive is Ziggy from Crazy Tube Circuits. Great Pedal!! Cheers
The Cusack Screamer and Barber Gain Changer sounded KILLER! I had a GC gathering dust in my pedal closet and you prompted me to try it again. Well, it just displaced an expensive OD on my board which I can now sell off. Thanks Josh, sometimes it pays to watch your show!
Arcade Fire’s first three albums were all great but I’ll go the underrated route and mention Neon Bible. That album has two of my all time AC favs “Intervention” and “(Antichrist Television Blues)”
Michael Twitchell is the burbs underrated on decade lists? “Indie” hasn’t aged particularly well but I lean yes. 2010-2019 Yeezy overrated, Suburbs under.
Fav overdrive on this show wasn’t demo’d - Charlie Brown! I need to check that one out more. Underrated overdrive suggestion is Lovepedal Super Six Grey Ghost!
Check out Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive Mod. The best vintage 808 TS around plus it's got 3 different "Mods" you can select. 1-Modded TS9. 2- Totally different gain and Eq structure (Great for Single Coil pickups) 3- Higain "British" style tone and of course it has the Clean feature, where you can dial in the clean signal along with the overdrives or use separate. You can use the pedal as a clean boost as well. So you have 5 options for dailing OD and Clean tones. Compared to a( a/b'd) true vintage 808 the Sparkle Drive Mod sounds just as good or better. Very transparent pedal.
Great video. The Bucket Seat is my fave with the Forza a close second. You asked about Barber and I would agree - he's worthy of a video. I bought a Tone Pump II (not the EQ pedal) about 20 years ago and I love it. Fantastic sound. However, there is very little out there on the older Barber pedals. Thanks!

The video came out great as always Josh. Thanks for including the Bucket Seat.
One of my favorite underrated drive pedals are: DOD Looking Glass and Seafoam Tidal :)
Yes, a full show on Barber pedals!!!
Thanking you in advance Josh...is it ready yet?
That Fender sounded great. Some brilliant stuff flying under the radar with the new Fender range. I have the Compuligist compressor/distortion pedal that I literally see nowhere. Sounds absolutely amazing through a Fender amp.
The moment you turned on the Bucket Seat.... holy!!! Orange and Marshall combined? I agree on that one.
The Sugar Drive is great, absolutely getting one. Would love to see a Barber episode!
Wow...some love for the Fender pedals..nice and rare. I just got the bubble chorus and couldn't be happier.
Josh, I think YOU’RE underrated.
Someone tell me if Vertex Dynamic Distortion is on here so I know if this video is worth watching
¿ all of these videos are worth watching.
How I watch this show: pause, search Greer southern, go to reverb search for prices, come back, watch two more product features, repeat loop.
Yes PLEASE do a Barber episode!! One of my absolute favorite pedals i own is the Trifecta, but it's the only Barber I've ever been in the viscinity of.
Josh: Today I'm gonna double the price of all the pedals in this video
Kyron Newbury 🤣
Awesome lol
The Fender looked interesting but as I watched the video and check the price on ebay, it's 200 bucks all day long!
These are all pedals still being manufactured and are available new. the prices will be fine
@@anthonygaitan3901 just making a joke bro :)
The Bucket seat (Marshal Plexi circuit) is built into my Rumble seat. What a sweet overdrive the Analog Alien is! Great episode!
Yes, do a show on Barber. I've used the Silver Ltd for 2 decades.
Thanks for this episode. I had the Forza up on Reverb for months trying to sell it. This apparently finally got it sold.
8:45 I know the secret to John Cusack's screamer's note clarity! It's HIGH FIDELITY! So obvious!
@Rocknrolladube It pains me to see how few people got the reference, given this comments section is supposed to be full of music fans.
great look, as usual. the clarity of your demos in these episodes is helpful (sounds like a pedal through an amp in a room! no backing tracks!).
not the point, i realize, but here goes: top mounted jacks on standard size pedals where the power jack is between them is a nightmare.
Re: Barber episode - yes, please! Also, an underrated overdrive: Gig-fx VOD
Barber episode please! I love the Tone Press, the bigger old one.
I’d love to see one too! The Barber direct drive was my first boutique pedal
Yes Barber Electronics episode !!!!! Tone Press changed my life !
Cheers
Barber certainly needs to be interviewed, paved the way for the hoard of boutique builders/designers making a living today imo.
The TC "Mojo Mojo" I picked one up for less than $30.00. I like the bottom end as does Paul Gilbert. Best, Pete.
That red “GC” pedal sounded the best, but I really want one of those Walrus 385s..
Thank goodness. I've been looking a at too many overrated underdrives!
Yes please do a Barber episode. Underated OD: Fulltone Plimsoul and Fulldrive 2.
Thanks !
You have shown me some of the exact types of tones I love, but hadn't know
where to find them....... until now . Great playing too !
PLEASE do Barber. His Direct Drive with my tele and fender deluxe is the best tone I've ever had the pleasure creating
Just purchased the gain changer from Barber, super cool guy, answered a couple of questions and sent the pedal out today!!
As the winner of Album of the Year at the Grammys, I don’t know that the Suburbs necessarily qualifies as underrated.
Aaron Smela Grammys are a joke but I said Neon Bible was underrated, not Suburbs
@9:30 nice cord progression… ima steal it!!!!
the walrus 385 is my favourite, I own it and its amazing! I was expecting some sounds from you lol
Totally. Love the dynamics on the 385. Great too to run the Colour Box 2 into it.
Fav overdrive on this show wasn’t demo’d - Charlie Brown! I need to check that one out more. Underrated overdrive suggestion is Lovepedal Super Six Grey Ghost!
Do the barber show, that sounds good. I appreciate the history and the characters behind them.
Please do a Barber episode! The Burn Unit was my first "boutique" pedal and it hasn't left my board for 12+ years.
Thanks!
When do we get the "Overrated Underdrives" episode?
20 minutes of Tube Screamers and Klons?
Bro I'm in.
You get 46 likes for this lame Dad joke, and I dropped a killer joke in the comments that hasn't gotten a single like! Either, I've lost the plot...it's opposite land....or you're all lame! Haha I honestly don't know which it is! 🤪
Is there such a thing as a Lo-Fi Overdrive? Makes you sound like a 1920s radio with bad tubes, or a broken transistor radio...
@@lueysixty-six7300 Average people need average jokes. But just remember that average people are some of the most special people and that's why God made so many of them.
Josh is too positive and humble, he'd just list off JHS pedals to not seem mean
