GROWING PAINS ALBUM: Björk’s “Vespertine” - First I thought her voice was too brash. It felt really raw and vulnerable and her punchy delivery didn’t make sense - then when this symphony sized choir came in on the chorus of “Hidden Place” I didn’t know what the hell to think or feel! Instead of a cozy electric guitar written with the singer leading me thru a track, there was this strange vibe - this all atop beds of crackles, pops, ticks and glitchy samples. Turns out I need a little Vespertine to widen my scope a bit. Now it’s a totally special album to me as it’s one of those pivots in musical discovery we all are lucky to have experienced thru the years. Thanks Josh for the reminder of my growing pains album :) !
I bought an OD3 because of this video and I cant thank you enough for introducing me to it. I took out a couple caps and resistors to lower the gain and open the sound up and oh my god its an absolute monster. Keep the good work coming man :)

Nick Drake-Pink Moon, a good friend of mine gave me the album to listen to for a few weeks and I guess at the time it was way too soft for me ( was going through one of those fazes ) anyway now he has become one of my favorite artists, calm, uplifting. depressing, thoughtful, spars and beautiful all on one album. I've bought and sold more than two dozen drive pedals trying them in my rig. I currently have 5 drive pedals on my board because they each have a unique character that warrants the real estate. One tip is that before you decide to list something, get a used looper pedal and place it in front of your drive and record several examples of how you normally play. Then you'll have your hands free to dial in every combination of knobs in a fraction of the time while your ears are deciding what the pedal is capable of. This is also a good strategy at soundcheck allowing you to adjust your pedal/amp eq for the gig.
i was so excited to see the SM7 Smash Box in this list. It's my very first pedal and also my favourite. It has a uniqueness that pops out when i step on it that no other pedal in my board has. Best part is it was given to me.

Thank you so much for mentioning the great line-6 distortion modeller! There is a personal story for me concerning this one : Some years ago i had to built up my rig totally new but i had not much money, When i had to decide, which overdrive/distortion/fuzz i should buy, there were so many great sounding boxes i had in mind but could not afford all of them. By chance i saw an ad in a music magazin where someone sold a new stompbox by line 6, which claimed for itself it could digitally reproduce a lot of the most important and significantly sounding overdrives, distortions and fuzzes in rock history for an inexpensive price. I had heard about the green line-6 delay and that The Edge and Steve Hackett used it so I called him and asked him, why the price was so low and he told me, that he couldn' t find someone who wanted to buy it because everybody he offered it obviously had the position that classical guitar distortion sounds couldn't be reproduced in acceptabke quality. Anyway, finally he accepted to sent me his dm-4 to try it out for a few days with the restricition to pay it only if i like it. What shall i say, i got this metal yellow thing finally for less them 120 € and it reliably reproduces all that legendary overdrives, fuzzes and distortions from TS-808 over Maestros and Big Muffs even to Boss Metal Zone. O.k. ...some of the classical tones are a bit nearer to the originals, some are caught not THAT similar but most of the sounds are very very close to the model. I had the chance to borrow some Originals, so i could test it one to one and i can truely confirm that the dm-4 sounds are real close to them. The Line 6 DM-4 in my opinion is one of the most underrated stompboxes on the market, that's a shame and i can't understand it. IT's a killer-sounding overdrive/fuzz/distortion-chameleon and i thank you, that you mentioned it in your video!! PLEASE TELL THIS EVERYBODY WHO NEEDS A GOOD AND VERSATILE DISTORTION!!!! Hope, my story was not boring, Greetings, Andy (from Germany)
Funeral - Arcade Fire, Blonde - Frank Ocean, Bon Iver - Bon Iver, Innerspeaker - Tame Impala, 808 and Heartbreak - Kanye West, Mezmerize - System of a Down. All of these albums I thought were really bad when I first heard them but now are some of my favourites. I think sometimes if it takes a while to get into an album its usually because there is something that you are not used to in the sound and when you 'get it' it really resonates.
Josh. The best thing about you is you highlight all of these other pedals because you have the confidence in your product to help others out. I play in a u2 tribute and I just bought your clover. Can’t wait to use it you are awesome bro
Another great video, vato! I think it’s so cool that you, as a builder who can build all these pedals himself, still promotes them and talks about how great they are. Thanks for reminding us that at the end of the day while we are trying to navigate through all of the tone snobbery and gear pretentiousness, it’s just about what sounds good and feels good to you. Whatever makes you pick up the guitar and create. Thanks josh.
Picked up a Boss OD-3 brand new for $75 at a local music shop after watching this video. Price was so low because they haven't been able to move that pedal in years. Even got to shoot it out with a couple of tube screamers and found it to be more versatile and better sounding to my ears. Thanks for the tips, Josh!
Best NEW Overdrives under $50: Caline: Orange Burst; Highwayman; and Pure Sky Joyo: US Dream; Vintage OD; Sweet Baby and Tai Chi also their AC Tone and American Sound amp sims are outstanding.
Great episode! I use an EHX Crayon in my board, recently bought it, paid like $50 for it. Great sounding pedal. Album that recently grew on me: Friendly Fires Pala.
First I bought a new Proco Rat after watching your videos and really liked it. After watching this one I had to get a Fat Cat and it's awesome (I got it on Ebay in great condition for 70€). Using it with synth, bass and guitar. I would love to see an episode on Moogerfooger and Minifooger pedals which I enjoy using a lot. Thanks for the great content!
The Stone Roses eponymous album. In my first year at university all my band mates listened to it and I didn’t get it. Then one day it clicked. It’s wonderful. The guitar outro on I Am The Resurrection is sublime.
Originally, I wasn’t a fan of PiL. I thought their music sounded too weird. And then one day, a band I like said PiL had impacted their sound drastically, so I started listening to their albums. They are now one of my favorite bands.
Record that grew on me? Otis Rush ..Lost in the Blues...his band and him seem ordinary..with vibes of Chicago and clean 335 tones. Yet none of the licks you've heard before. Soon you realize the Doors sounded like this, Zep did too, Santana, ..etc
Several years ago I worked at a very popular Tex mex restaurant in southern Colorado. Through out the summer we would be constantly slammed, on top of that the cook area was not very roomy and always sweltering hot. The lead cook put on The Red Hot Chilly Peppers "aero plane" and we didn't take it off repeat for two weeks, the waitresses could hardly stand to turn in an order because the song will linger in your mind and you don't even realize your humming it an hour later. Well after we finally gave in to the pleading of the masses to change the song we decided to put the whole entire album on repeat. I don't think that made it any further than a couple of days. So I was never a big RHCP fan and remain that way today (sorry not ment to offend anyone) but for about a month, I was one of biggest fans ever. Thanks for all you do. I always take some new knowledge with me after watching your videos. Oh and my god you have a lot of pedals and gear, I always wanted to be that guy with all the stuff.LOL 🎸😈🎸
Album that grew on me : "The Getaway" by Red Hot Chili Peppers. Needs multiple listening. Now I'm a fan of the band and know all of their album pretty well, even the first ones. But...when I heard it for the first time I wasn't convinced at all. Third time I heard it was on a beautiful summer day and suddenly it all made sense. The sound is fairly different (produced by Danger Mouse instead of Rick Rubin) but more natural...less compressed. It felt like I could hear Chad's drums real sound for the first time without everything being in your face. 3 key tracks : "Death of a Samurai", "The Getaway" (which should've been a single) and "Goodbye Angel". Now we all love Frusciante and we're excited he's back but Josh Klinghoffer is a f*cking good musician and has some great guitaristic moments on "The Getaway".
I don't use overdrive, fuzz distortion But I do own a Boss OS-2 that works well and can be found for $30 used all over the internet in new condition. The OS-2 is one of the pedals that are used to shame users, by players that paid $200 to $400 for an overdrive, when it is actually a great pedal at a bargain price. $99 new with 4 knobs to control the sound you desire. "Level, Tone, Drive and Color."
I really wanted a MorningGlory but had a hard time spending 200 on single pedal, so I got on Reverb and found a Double Barrel for 220. I really like JHS pedals and respect your focus on sharing other pedal options for those of us that love playing but do so on a low budget.
I know you have the Double Barrel, but if you want another MG style pedal for stacking and if you don't have any problems with the ethics around cloning, try the NUX Morningstar. It's a Morning Glory clone, mini size. Has two modes, regular and bright. Stacked with any other Bluesbreaker-style pedal (I use either a Mooer Blues Crab or Tapestry Fab Suisse) and basically, you're 85% of the way to a King of Tone. It really plays well with their Monterey Vibe (before gain). I bought both, the total was around $140-150AUD for the two.
OD-3 has always been my go-to pedal. Great as a gain booster as well. You can easily get a very natural, tube-like dirt out of it. Definitely on par with so-called “boutique” drive pedals.
Loved the vid, keep them coming. I bought an album by The Grateful Dead called Blues For Allah back in the 70's, I bought it mainly for the album cover of a skeleton in a red gown, playing a violin, sat in an archway. Yes, I know it sounds strange, so naturally I thought that the music will be amazing. I absolutely hated it, I played half of it once, and never again. Forty years later, and I played it again, and what a difference forty years makes. I love it, I don't play it all the time, but I love the feel of the whole album when I do play it...
Nirvana Nevermind- I was a big fan of 80s hard rock and the first Nirvana album came out when I was a freshman in college. I hated the grunge sound, and at the time, I perceived the musicianship to be very weak in comparison to the virtuosic 80s musicians. I also blamed them for sidelining the type of music I loved. Looking back however, I realize that it was great music and it takes me back to my college years.
Record that grew on me? Todd Rundgren's Utopia. Their first album. Just didn't get it at first, but a really hip drummer friend highly recommended it so I hung in there. After the 10th spin, I couldn't get enough of it. Musically complex and layered. It has a permanent home on my iPhone so I can always get a fix.
One of my favorite bands today is Radiohead. When i was younger I like the bends and Pablo honey, but wasn't a fan of Ok computer. Until one day I gave it another listen and now I play half the songs on the album. It's one of my favorites
I love In Rainbows, but Its not my favorite because Johnny touches less guitar in it and I just LOVE his style. 15 steps is another one I've learned, it's actually one of my favorite albums of all time, it's artistic, poignant, Dreamy. Their use of Tape echo and volume pedals, just those 2 things, make it sooooo sweet. But when I was a teenager I was dumb and was only into mediocre classic rock and popular metal.
Ryan Adams 29, not much guitar on the album didn’t like it at the time but has become my favourite album of all time. Great video and super informative as ever, many thanks
I bought the Smash Box and another Ibanez pedal when they came out in the early 2000s. Used maybe less than 5 hours so I better go through my storage unit!
My pedal I would add to this list is the Danelectro Daddy-O overdrive. It sounds amazing and can be found for mega-cheap. I’ve had one for over 20 years. I had mine re-cased, because quite frankly, it’s not much to look at. But it is killer.
Many of my favorite bands I didn't like at first. Bikini Kill - The First 2 Records, At-The Drive In - Relationship of Command, Choking Victim - No Gods No Managers
So I just watched this today, yeah, 2 years late... in case anyone still reads the comments on these old ones... Album that grew on me? Black Pumas self titled debut album. Recommended by my cousin at first I thought it was kind of odd but then I found myself humming the tunes... Great stuff.
i recently bought a boss od-20 drive zone pedal for $70... with 22 overdrive-distortion-fuzz models, it sounds awesome, & for $70, i don't care that it is digital... it's is worth every penny...
Wow, what a great concept! Thanks for bringing the love to affordable pedals. DOD250 all day (just not through bright amps)! I'd dig an episode where you build an entire pedalboard with sleeper hits.
Hey Josh! I watched this video the day that it came out, I thought the Double Drive sounded great. I checked them out on Ebay and Reverb. A couple of days later, they were all gone. I hope they're paying you commission!
The album that grew on me was jason isbell here we rest. Didn't care for it when my dad showed it to me but now 5 concerts later he is one of my favorite artist.
It's quite amazing how long your posts remain active Josh. Oct 2018?!?!?!?! Wow. So for me I was all Goth. Siouxsie, Sisters, Alien Sex Fiend...all that jazz. Sometime in '89 two things arrived. Mudhoney's "Superfuzz Bigmuff" and Sonic Youth's "Daydream Nation" and likely Dinosaur Jr's "Bug". Chorus and Delay went off the board and it was all Fuzz, Overdrive and Distortion. As a young man in the late eighties and early ninties grabbing those sub $100 dollar pedals was the key. I actually bought a Russian Big Muff in the "amo box" enclosure for $125. Good times
Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky." It was my first from them, and now they're one of my all-time favorites. I borrowed it from my local library, only played it once, and didn't really pay attention. Then something made me borrow it again, and I played it several times...and it clicked! I understood!! Went out and bought everything they had to that point, and was HOOKED!
The artist that got me was Bob Dylan. Hated the hokey stuff my mom would play, and his voice was like a parody to me. Then I heard Blood on the Tracks. Yup. That's the one.
I still haven't bought an OD pedal since 15 years ago I got a Boss OD-20. It does classic Boss pedals and a selection of the most sought after classics. It's got the OD-1, OD-2, DS-1, Metal zone, TS9, Klon Centaur, Big Muff, Fuzz Face and more. It's all digital modeling, but sounds absolutely great like the real pedals. Bought it new for €200 and has never let me down after countless gigs. Apart from that, I actually mostly use my Marshall's natural overdrive (Haze 40 modded to JCM800 spec and a Hi gain dual reverb) punched in the gut with an EHX LPB-1. Super cheap pedal, not so transparent, but gives you more gain out of your amp plus fattens up the tone. Sounds heavenly for such a simple thing.
Prisoner - Ryan Adams, wasn't a fan at first but now I love it more than Clapton, especially since many people here in England have never heard of him, it's great sharing good music
Dude - Twisted Sister's Twisted Christmas is the most Bad Ass Christmas album you've probably never heard. I picked it up at a flea market for $1 and it ROCKS.
lool you had me until you mentioned the Edge, .....my nominations: DOD Gunslinger, possibly the most underrated amp in a box pedal ever, just killer DOD Lookingglass, possibly the most underrated OD ever , and unique, looks as good as it sounds TC Dark Matter, another amp in a box best 30-40 bucks you can spend in the drive pedal world EHX OD Glove, the best (IMO) mass produced budget OCD clone, sounds closest to my ear in side by sides EHX East River Drive, the best (IMO) mass produced Tube Screamer. pats spec'd by "analog" Mike (Analog Man) better than joyo by quite a bit (less grainy, the Joyo is grainy) TRex Alberta 2, In my top 5 drive pedals all time, so versatile , 2 different voiced /gained channels, great build, might be just over $100 in the US, in EU you can buy them new from Thomann for under £/Euro 100 TRex Mudhoney 2, basically 2 x channels of Rat cloned (but smoother and fatter) heaven, build quality is peak, again see above for prices
Great video! My boss od-3 is my secret weapon. Funny, I don't meet many other people that use them, but that's cool with me. They'll learn eventually 😂😂😂
These blog videos have really changed my view on JHS. Please continue doing it. I wish every company pushed a face to sell and openly talking about their products against others. I mean who else is doing this? For sure just buying some products for the hell of it. Y'all deserve it. I always viewed JHS as a mod or a small knick-nak (which is clearly dumb of me) and now I'm blown away that I don't have a Mid Ghost or a Glory. They are exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you guys for the time and thank you for being so god damn intuitive.
Josh is the man for sure. So informative and he isn't just about selling his own product. Make great recordation for his competitors as well. Genuine. #respect🇨🇦
Melvins Bullhead was an album, or a band, that I could not understand at first listen. It took literally a year for me to get into it, and appreciate it. Now, I love the band to death. Ween is another band that is like that as well, and Chocolate and Cheese was the album that introduced me to them.
Thank you so much for these vlogs! I personally have many serious mental disorders, so most days are a suicidal mess. But this blog has given me something forward to weekly, and has proven to be more therapeutic than most medical professionals suggestions. Thank you again. Your friend James.
Believe it or not John Mayer grew on me immensely. I was hater, hating on all his hype. Then my cousin said he liked his music (I always consider his opinion on music over anyone else’s), so I gave him a shot. Definitely glad I did. I would’ve missed out on some great melodies and great guitar writing/playing.
Album/Band everyone raged about: Black Keys, El Camino I hated on them for so long and then completely lost my mind over how great this whole album was all the way through!
I listened to this album when it came out and wasn't super into it but after their new album came out this year I revisited it and it's killer. Mothers - When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired P.s. Your vlogs are great!
Love my DM-4. Also the Carl Martin Plexi. Believe it or not I got a Behringer OD (the purple one) with a 5' cable at the thrift store for $5. BEST $5 OD pedal I have ever had!
I was watching the video and when I heard the Ibanez SM7 I had to pause it, look for the pedal and click the buy button. I´m in Mexico, not many options around, but I managed to find it for U$45.
Jason Isbell last 3 records. I wasn't a big fan until a friend of mine who is a guitarist and huge JHS pedal lover asked me to study his stuff. Once I started really listening to it I noticed how great his guitar tone is and how phenomenal his lyrics were, plus he's also a fellow Alabamian so that's even a bigger upside. Love your videos bro. More pedal builders should vlog like this.
Most all these pedals are well over $100 on up to $700 on Reverb now.... Ridiculous prices for USED PEDALS! Don't get price gouged, some sellars think these pedals are made of gold and worth tens times their weight in gold in the crappy condition their in with NO BOX OR POWER CHARGER.
My Aim Is True- Elvis Costello. When I was in junior high school the single "Watching the Detectives" did not capture my imagination, and the timbre of Declan McManus is, shall we say an acquired taste. Fast forward to my first year in college, 1981, and I discover the glory of This Year's Model LP, (yes, I was late to this one, but I did not have an opinion about it.) and all bets were off. Such enamored feelings were generated for what I coined "Beatles v.2.0" that I very quickly acquired his debut release only to have all the deeper album cuts to be revealed for all its glory. Mind blown... Since then there has been nary a track that EC has released that I could not wait to get my hands on. Before Napster was a thing I signed up for CD trees that distributed live bootlegs (I have about 60). I also never became a fair-weather fan of his work like so many ignoramuses that would bay for him to keep churning out his first 3 albums. Elvis is an artist in continuous evolution and I have enjoyed watching him branch out into a multitude of genres. He is a master.
This is unheard of. He makes pedals and he is here showing off pedals from other manufacturers, just because he is passionate about the topic! I love this!

It’s just a reposting of this video… after it drives the cost of these pedals up.

People who complain about how pedals mentioned by Josh skyrocket in value should know that I bought a Bad Monkey today for $49.
Got one a while back for £40. Glad I got it.
Did you flip it for $600 now after his Klon video? 😂

Thanks for reminding us that at the end of the day while we are trying to navigate through all of the tone snobbery and gear pretentiousness, it’s just about what sounds good and feels good to you. Whatever makes you pick up the guitar and create. Thanks josh.
🙏🙏🙏
This video made me very angry. You talked about your killer three pickup Jazzmaster and then didn't show us pictures. So cruel.
Unfortunately, I don't have any. Wish I did...
Nice!!
Thanks for pointing me to the dm4. Spent the evening in pure bliss.
Best NEW Overdrives under $50: Caline: Orange Burst; Highwayman; and Pure Sky Joyo: US Dream; Vintage OD; Sweet Baby and Tai Chi also their AC Tone and American Sound amp sims are outstanding.
Neil Young! Any of him playing solo. His voice sounded so silly when I was young. Then I just couldn't stop listening and love it now.
I just bought an Angry Driver at a garage sale on Friday. $70.00 with box! So now I own a JHS pedal. Well, half of a JHS pedal.
OD-3! First pedal I ever bought about 17 years ago. I wouldn't know why I exist without it.
what about underdrives over $100?
Oh and my god you have a lot of pedals and gear, I always wanted to be that guy with all the stuff.LOL
🎸😈🎸
Also check the GFS Twin Clean Drive. Two boosts cascaded. Awesome cruch with a tube amp.
An album that grew on me was Graceland. Just so bizzare and obscure at first but now i absolutely love it's unique combination of styles
I don't use overdrive, fuzz distortion
But I do own a Boss OS-2 that works well and can be found for $30 used all over the internet in new condition.
The OS-2 is one of the pedals that are used to shame users, by players that paid $200 to $400 for an overdrive, when it is actually a great pedal at a bargain price. $99 new with 4 knobs to control the sound you desire. "Level, Tone, Drive and Color."
I own one and I love it! I also have a JHS Double Barrel, but the OS2 + DB is a killer combination!! I found a great tone with those two pedals.
Your post inspired me to hunt out a used one. Thanks
@@TheTubeDude You won’t regret it!
Dude. In rainbows..... is the greatest
Where was this channel all my life! This is fum! My life is beautiful now that I found you!!!
Album I hated at first and slowly, to my surprise, became one of my faves: St. Vincent - Strange Mercy
I bought an Ibanez sm7 because of this video. Thank you Josh. This is awesome. 29.99 at music go round......so happy, THANK YOU JOSH!
The BOSS OD3 has been a permanent fixture in my setup since I got it like 15 years ago.
OCD blems are $99 shipped, brand new from Fulltone.
So grateful that this isn’t just a bunch of Tubescreamers. Gonna check a bunch of these out!
My favorite one is the MOJOMOJO from TC Electronic which is $60 list price. Amazing tone that is better than most more expensive od's
Good times

Wow! Nice!
@@jhspedals spreading the love, baby!
I am here to Endorse the OD-3. Solid overdrive. Buy it.
I bought the caline Brutus and I absolutely love it. I had overdrive/distortion problems and it’s sorted the lot out. Thanks so much
I found an Ibanez SM7 at a thrift store for $19.99, didn't know anything about it but couldn't pass up it up. It is easily my favorite distortion.
'the next pedal is my favourite of all time'
Mr. JHS, you slay.
lool you had me until you mentioned the Edge, .....my nominations:
DOD Gunslinger, possibly the most underrated amp in a box pedal ever, just killer
DOD Lookingglass, possibly the most underrated OD ever , and unique, looks as good as it sounds
TC Dark Matter, another amp in a box best 30-40 bucks you can spend in the drive pedal world
EHX OD Glove, the best (IMO) mass produced budget OCD clone, sounds closest to my ear in side by sides
EHX East River Drive, the best (IMO) mass produced Tube Screamer. pats spec'd by "analog" Mike (Analog Man) better than joyo by quite a bit (less grainy, the Joyo is grainy)
TRex Alberta 2, In my top 5 drive pedals all time, so versatile , 2 different voiced /gained channels, great build, might be just over $100 in the US, in EU you can buy them new from Thomann for under £/Euro 100
TRex Mudhoney 2, basically 2 x channels of Rat cloned (but smoother and fatter) heaven, build quality is peak, again see above for prices
That Looking Glass is amazing. The Gunslinger isn't my sort of thing, but it seems like a winner for the high-gain metal types.
On the same page Josh, just bought the Ibanez Smashbox on Reverb last week for $25...unreal deal and great pedal!
Thanks for taking the time to watch and respond! Best to you ;)
Digitech Bad Monkey is the Phil X classic! I think they sold loads on the back of his FrettedAmericana demos
Wow, man. This is really special. Thanks for being so vulnerable and sharing!
I knew the Bad Monkey because of Phil X! Shoutout to the guy!
Album/Band everyone raged about: Black Keys, El Camino
I hated on them for so long and then completely lost my mind over how great this whole album was all the way through!
This dude is off his chain! He's telling you to buy his pedal;s used. My heart skipped a beat
My favorite is the Boss SD-1.
I listened to this album when it came out and wasn't super into it but after their new album came out this year I revisited it and it's killer.
Mothers - When You Walk A Long Distance You Are Tired
P.s. Your vlogs are great!
Here I am after 4 years. All the pedals shown here (except the Boss one) are stupidly expensive.
I was just about to type the same thing.
