Hey stoners, quick question... how did butterflies evolve into a larval insect(caterpillar) that builds a velco pad to stick its butt to, grow an egg around itself, digest everything that isn’t a butterfly and rebuild itself AS a butterfly with a “gradual change”model of evolution and natural selection?
I love that you do a band context playing normal music similar to what most folk would actually play in bands instead of just widdling on on your own playing what we might get to play in like 3 solos in a set of 20. Appreciated.
Noticed your comment on the cheeseball pedal n not relying on the online schematics. Puts me in mind of a couple things I been working on recently, tried searching online for answers n ended up fiddling with the stuff on my own while waiting n got them working. Not all online info is bad but it's often just faster to do it yourself when able to. On a different topic the ross compressor set off a regret of mine in an indirect way. Had a ross amp from when I worked in the family music store years ago. It was part of the leftover stock, was a keyboard amp but sounded really good for guitar too. It even had a built had a built in chorus which is my personal fave. But it was a subtle effect n I rarely use effects in a subtle way so I stupidly sold it a few years ago. Now I'm thinking I should've kept it. It was pretty early on in the production run to as they didn't yet have the formal csa approval n we couldn't even sell them untill we got the inspection stickers for them (which did come pretty soon after).
Favourite covers album: Enjoy Every Sandwich. It's not one band doing a bunch of covers of songs by different bands, but a bunch of performers doing Warren Zevon songs.
I'd like to see JHS try and make a multi-wah in the same vain as their Muffeletta and Bonzai. Include circuits for legendary wahs like vox, morley, tycobrahe, etc.
Record time: I love Matthew Caws and Nada Surf. It's a shame that they've never matched the commercial success of "Popular", but I like pretty much everything they've put out. I was able to see them in a club in the early aughts, the Southgate House in Newport, KY, which was also my favorite stage to play on. It was a great show.
I was expecting those larger form factor Behringer pedals to be in this video. Their VM111 Vintage Time Machine - EHX Deluxe Memory Man, the VT999 Vintage Tube Monster - Ibanez Tube Monster (or whatever it's called), and the VT911 Vintage Tube Overdrive - B&K Tube Overdrive. I'm sure that some people think that the Vintage Time Machine really IS the Deluxe Memory Man judging by the price they fetch on the second hand market, I've seen them sell for well over £100, and sometimes as much as £120-£140, which is ridiculous when you take into consideration that they cost about £35 brand new. Behringer stopped making them a few years ago but I still find it amazing how much they cost nowadays on eBay etc. 😵
Josh, I always love your videos but I think this one is probably my favorite. Mainly because of the stellar playing examples! Very tasty stuff. Btw, I lived in KC for about 3 years from 80 - 83 before moving with band to Cali (long story) but I still try to visit whenever I'm traveling through the area. Do you remember "Guitar Music"? Jim Colclasure and awesome luthier Jay Black were the team back then. One of my best friends lived in an apartment in the building where they were located. Great memories. Some other names you may be familiar with, Guido Welsh, Steve Cardenes, Brian Milam, John Kessler. So many serendipitous events happened for me during my time there.
My pooch just heard you really got fleas & now she is sulking in the corner! She's pissed off Josh! She wont even look at me! I think this deserves a free JHS pedal as compensation! ;)
Half the pedals on my board are clones, Analogman Sunface (one of the best Fuzz Face clones), JHS Muffuletta (Josh too modest to give it an honorable mention, but it's great), Wampler Tumnus (Klon Klone)Catalinbread Belle Epoch Deluxe (great EP-3 clone), Strymon Volante (Binson EchoRec among other things), plus I guess you could count the JHS Twin Twelve too (Silvertone 1484 amp in a box). The J. Rockett Dude is supposed to be Dumble-like, but I guess it would be a stretch to call it a clone. Favorite cover album could be Saturday Morning Cartoon's greatest hits from 1995. Matthew Sweet's "Scooby Doo" and Butthole Surfurs "Underdog" are off-the-charts great, but nothing and I mean nothing tops Reverend Horton Heat's "Johnny Quest/Stop That PIgeon".
I had the RE-20 for a short time. It did sound really great - BUT - there was an audible 'whoosh' sound that cycled exactly in time with the silly, pointless, annoying spinning LED thing. I debated yanking out that ridiculous circuit. But decided it would be more work than it was worth compared to just giving it away to a metal-head friend who would never, in a million years, notice the problem.
The clone I want the most is a good analogue OC-2 octaver. I know there have been a few around but most of those are out of production and just as expensive and hard to find as the original. I really wish/hope Boss reproduce these in their Waza line one day
Josh, what is the JHS policy if your clone gets loose and eats your cheese ball? BTW, I thought your version of the cheese ball really captured that Lovetone feel. I’m going to have to add that one to my list of future purchases. Plus, any pedal with cheese in the title has to be bad ass.
Did you guys revamp the intro music to add more subs? Sounds especially groovy today......but then your intro has always been smooth with the groove....thanks for the tiny grooves. Your groove admirer, Seth
Not necessarily anything I'd nominate for the "best" cover album, but one I tend to always think of is Metallica's `Garage Inc.'. There are some good ones on there. I have always preferred their cover of `Turn The Page' and the Thin Lizzy `Whiskey In The Jar-oh' was really good too. Well, I thought they were all good but not all great.
What do you think about METAL FILM resistors / caps vs CARBON / POLY? Is there really a difference? Why do these old mic Preamps or guitar amps sounds better even when all the components have the same value? Any input?
I love that 1. it's got 4 pickups, and 2. there's a lipstick on there. I had a Strat that I modified with a single-sized humbucker in the bridge (I think it was an SD Hot Rails pickup), a cheap Guitar Fetish lipstick pickup in the middle, and a vintage-style single coil in the neck. It had a crazy variety of sounds, and the lipstick was always one of my favorites to play around with, it just had a great sound to it. Especially in the middle, which I would have otherwise almost never used because it wasn't the bridge or the neck. With the lipstick in there, it totally changed the sound and made me love it!
Hi, I'm in the UK and in the late 70's I had a JHS "fuzz" - the JHS stood for John Hornby Skewes and they are still going now. I've always found it odd that your company is also called JHS (obviously your name) but has there been any confusion/conflict with it? I remember the pedal sounded just like the Park - more overdrive than fuzz (and it was blue too..) :-)
I agree, record them Josh and put them on the Spot or Bandcamp or whateverrrr. That jam you did for the Klon was pure!! Get on it man, you know what you have to do!
The music in these videos is perfect proof that you don't need to be the greatest technical guitarist to make interesting and fun music. All you really need is good rhythm.
“Good rhythm” is sorely under-emphasized in technical guitar studies. The ability to play sixteenth notes rapid-fire with sixteenth rests is technically more demanding than playing sloppy eighth notes with residual noise. If you’re a rhythm player, this is both gospel and second nature.
Matt Gilbert He was a tortured guy. Have you ever seen the documentary on him from maybe the early 2000s? Some fans try to help him out, by doing a benefit concert, and filmed what his daily life was life. He had no health insurance, living in poverty, and had no idea how many people loved his music. He ended up not being able to play during the benefit, as the situation became too much for him. He had some family that seemed to really be trying to help him, and he made it to 71, so maybe they did.
The best cover record is Rush "Feedback". They released it just so they would have something new to play on their 30th Anniversary tour. It was basically a collection of all their favorite songs to play when they were playing High School dances.
It should be noted that Park made more than just a tone bender clone; they made some very well-regarded small-box amp heads that were a hot item on the vintage market, last I checked.
My retirement plan: 1) Buy a bunch of random pedals 2) Sit back and hope they all show up in one of Josh's videos 3) Buy an island Keep up the good work Mr. Scott!
Boba Fett will always be my favorite clone.
Noooo beat me to it by one minute :(
Ehh I prefer commander cody, famous for wearing an orange armband in lego star wars.
10/10
My favorite clone is the LongAmp Roxanne a exaxt clone of the electric mistress except it has a volume mod so it's not as quiet
I’d also rank him right up there with MOSFET and JFET.
I was wayyy too high for that intro
I'm peaking!
With you mate! The whole show has been throwing me
I was just like damn those cheese balls look good I should go get some.

There’s bass now. When did this happen?
TheSpiceLord Maybe 5 episodes ago? I like it live because they were overdubbing it sometimes previously.

Fav cover record: The Detroit Cobras - Mink Rat Or Rabbit
Best cover album ever: Killdozer's "For Ladies Only" - if for no other song than American Pie
Underknown album that is AWESOME ... Bear's Den ~ Red Earth and Pouring Rain.
I'm still loving my Mooer E-Lady. I do alot of Police, and it sounds Spot-on in conjunction with my other pedals & effects.
Good stuff, again! "A Nod to Surf" almost sounded like a short Rush instrumental. As I said, good stuff, all around!

Cover-ups by Ministry and Tesla's Real to Reel worthy of a mention.

Can you please make a video all about bass pedals? I’ve been interested in adding pedals to my bass and I don’t know where to begin
