The lead singer from the Crawling King Snakes got together with a session guitarist, the bassist from Them Crooked Vultures, and the drummer from Band of Joy. I'm blanking on the collab band name but it's something like Iron Blimp or Heavy Floating Passenger Vessel. They're pretty good.
Just stumbled upon your channel earlier today, and am going to be spending some significant time in the near future catching up on your videos. As a hobbyist A/V volunteer that likes to dabble in electronics projects and that is hoping to have some time to finally get around to playing with and learning how to play some of the instruments I have acquired over the years, I find your content incredibly educational, very interesting, and just really resonating with me. And then to top it all off, ending the video with a highlight of my favorite album of all time, how can I not subscribe?
I would stay out of the pedal business. I could design a pedal that I like and if I brought it to market, it would be the same or "too similar" to an existing pedal. Unless I could imagine a unique sound that I don't think has been done before, (which I can't at this time and I'm 65), I'd play it safe and just stay out of the arena. Look how Spirit sued Led Zeppelin (unsuccessfully) because Stairway to Heaven had some note & chord sequences that was similar to a song of theirs. The ruling was based on the fact that probably all of those note sequences have been used for centuries, with examples. Pedal designs have not been around for centuries but there are known circuits that cause effects such as fuzz ( a friend of mine build a fuzz for me in high school in 1973). It didn't come "with a box" but I still own it and the circuit board is simple. It would be so easy to swap out some caps, diodes or resistors and change the effect. I'd never even think of marketing it because whatever I came up with would probably resemble someone else's pedal and I don't have time to research all the electronics patents.
@@cjgrasser759 Almost the entire pedal industry is just those old circuits with some caps or diodes changed or sometimes just outright clones. There are very few pedals that actually are unique enough that they don't resemble another pedal. Marketing is the backbone of the pedal industry.
I was huge Temple Of The Dog fan when that was released. Reach Down is an all time great (math) rock song. Having worked in the telcom and bicycle industries in Taiwan and China I very much enjoyed this episode. Finding knock offs of products you've been involved in getting to market can be crushing. At the same time it can be fun to see how someone else reverse engineers things. One observation I'd like to offer is that I've seen Japanese companies licence designs to other companies who can produce them at lower cost. The agreement is usually that they only sell them into markets not focused on by the licencing company. Or they are stealing the intellectual property and selling into a market where the patents and copy writes can't be enforced.
I liked Temple of the Dog a lot, I like just about anything Chris Cornell has ever been involved in. It seemed to me that was more like a "pre-PearlJam" than a merging of anything. They decided they couldn't go on as Mother Love Bone but that affected Soundgarden and Cornell in particular as much as anyone. So this came as a result before they all went their separate ways.
That's spot on! I'm in my 50's, from Seattle, friends with a number of the people involved, and worked at the downtown Tower Records, at the time. Temple Of The Dog was a tribute to Andy Wood, and it was FROM that mish-mash of musicians from various groups, that Pearl Jam formed (at first, as Mookie Blaylock). Obviously being close to it all, I feel that this specific element of this album, is historically significant, but most important is for people to DISCOVER the album, and from that, they can start tracing band lineages, and deep diving into a number of great bands from that time and place.
Mother Love Bone's singer, Andrew Wood, had recently died due to a drug overdose just as their debut album was released. He was a good friend of Chris Cornell. They had lived together for a time. Chris wrote some songs about Wood and asked Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament of Mother Love Bone if they wanted to record them with him as a tribute. The tribute songs grew into an album. While this was going on, Jeff and Stone had started forming a new band with Mike McCready on guitar. They didn't have a name yet. During the Temple of the Dog recording sessions, Eddie Vedder had come up from San Diego to audition for the new band which would become known as Pearl Jam. They asked him to sing on Hunger Strike. Don't remember if he had any other backing vocals on the album or not. They toured a little as Temple of the Dog, but I don't think there was ever an idea to be a permanent band since Soundgarden were on the verge of their breakthrough with Superunknown and the new formation of Mookie Blaylock/Pearl Jam. It was always meant to be a one off tribute to Andy Wood.
@@scedge This is very accurate. I was... close... to the whole situation (friends with a number of the people involved - no namedropping, that's not the point). There was a big Andy tribute show at The Paramount, where Temple Of The Dog played (that show was maybe without Chris, of memory serves). For such famous groups involved in the realization of that project, I'll say again, I think it's odd how muddled the history became to those who weren't there, despite being fans of the various groups. Before the rest of the world realized there was something going on musically in the Northwest, Andy seemed poised to become a huge star, and he was a good musician, amazing sense of humor, and so on. When he died, it GUTTED all of us who were friends with him, or even just casually knew him. Obviously many tragedies and losses to come, but none of us knew that, of course, so Temple Of The Dog was such a cathartic thing for all of us, amd fans of Andy/MLB/Malfunkshun
The Jeff Beck album "Jeff" is really good, the song seasons in particular is outstanding Jeff beck and apollo 440 collaborating. Defo worth checking out for that song alone
Pushin' Forward Back is my favorite on the album! The Melvins - Hold It In is pretty great. King Buzzo & Dale Crover are joined by Paul Leary & Pinkus from The Butthole Surfers. There are a few songs on there that sound like Butthole Surfers songs but with Buzz on vocals instead of Gibby. The Hindu Love Gods self titled album is pretty great too. Warren Zevon backed by Mike Mills, Peter Buck, & Bill Berry of R.E.M. playing covers. Their version of Raspberry Beret is really good. Speaking of Soundgarden, while there is no official release of this, the Tadgarden show is super cool! Soundgarden reunited in 2009 playing Soundgarden songs but with Tad Doyle singing
GREAT episode! I owned a Grunge pedal and sold it (in original box!) a few years ago on Reverb. The only pedal I kept from those days was the Bad Monkey. I may replace it with a shameless clone I have my eye on called the "Bonsai"! Speaking of bands that are clones, check out "Phantom Rocker & Slick" from the mid-eighties. It's the guys from the Stray Cats WITHOUT Brian Setzer doing amazing Americana with Earl Slick on guitar duties. I've been trying to nail Slick's sound since then... would love your take on what he might be using...?
Temple Of The Dog is one of my all time favorite record. The second album by Down is a great one too. For those who may not know, it’s a band consisting of members of Pantera, Crowbar and Corrision of Conformity.
One of my all time favorite records, is "Metamorphosis" by Iron Butterfly. After the success of In a Gadda Da Vidda, they made another album with the same line up (possibly two). Following that, guitarist Eric Braunn leaves the band and is replaced by two. One is Mike Pinnera from Blues Image (Ride Captain Ride), who also sang. The other is a wicked slide guitarist called Rhino. This lineup only released this one studio album , then broke up for five years. This album blew me away the first time I heard it, and still packs a mighty punch. I also think it is one of the best recorded albums ever, it is mixed really well. I've met other people who share my thoughts in that regard, it really must be heard. The album was somewhat successful at the time, with the single "Stone Believer" getting some FM airplay. I hope you enjoy Metamorphosis as much as I have.
Like how you changed up the Nirvana song just enough at the end. Also kudos for not being a gear snob w those odd ball purchases! Seems these pedals are fun tools for the right job anyways
@Rumy 73 I don't think that JHS is really that straight forward about the fact the many of his "designs" are little more than tweaking a few cap and resistor values here and there of pre-existing circuits: Wheeler Fuzz - Zvex Wolly Mammoth Andy Timmons - Mi Audio Crunch Box Angry Charlie - Mi Audio Crunch Box All America - Pro Co RAT Alpine - Sky Pedals Cloud 9 Astro Mess - Devi Ever Hyperion Bass Mini Bomb - Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET (Bass version) Blender - ROG Splitter-Blender Bun Runner - Devi Ever Hyperion + Tone Bender Charlier Brown - Zvex Distortron Double Barrel - Marshall Bluesbreaker + Ibanez Tube Screamer Emperor - Arion SCH-1 Feedback Looper - diy Feedback Looper with volume control added FireFly - Sola Sound ToneBender MKIII(Madbean PastyFace) Green Tea - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer(Bass) + ROG Splitter-Blender + Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET Honey Comb - EA Tremolo Kilt - Bixonic Expandora + Booster(booster not traced) Lime Aid - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer (Bass version) Low Drive - Ibanez Tube Screamer with fat mod and clipping mod Mini Bomb - Tim Escobedo's Duende JFET Moonshine - Ibanez Tube Screamer with fat mod and clipping mod Morning Glory - Marshall Bluesbreaker Muffuletta - EHX Big Muff Pandamonium - Zvex Wolly Mammoth + ROG Flipster Panther Analog Delay - BOSS DM-2 Panther Cub V 1.5 - BOSS DM-2 Pink Panther Delay - BOSS DM-2 Pollinator - Dallas Arbiter/Dunlop Fuzz Face(Germanium) Pulp n Peel - Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer Ruby Red - ROG Superaux Deux + booster(booster not traced) State Line - Zvex Distortron + Marshall Blues Breaker Superbolt - ROG Superaux Deux Sweet Tea - Ibanez Tube Screamer + Mi Audio Crunch Box The Calhoun - Eighty Seven Percent - De Stijl + Sola Sound ToneBender MKIII(Madbean PastyFace) Twin Twelve - Eighty Seven Percent - De Stijl Warble Tron - Uni-Vibe(Madbean Harbinger One) Note that whilst some of these are pedals made by big businesses that probably don't care about the numbers JHS is selling, some are smaller independent builders and plenty are DIY designs where the actual designer is known. In the case of the Devi Ever pedal, he denied it was a clone for a while until it turned out that, actually it was a clone.
@Rumy 73 Everyone is straight forward about their clones, they do the same layout, color and knobs and everything, just cause they don't write a paragraph or make a vid doesn't mean they are not saying it, JHS just charges "premium" pricing at "boutique" BS. Of all the pedals I owned, JHS and Wampler are the only two that died on me, and the only two that fit that description, I found tons of better alternatives, I stopped buying any a long time ago.
@@leeroyfunk many of these builders have no clue how to design a new circuit or innovate in something ...they just change 2 or 3 resistors or caps and charge you big money 🤣
May I suggest Electronic featuring Bernard Sumner of New Order and Johnny Marr of The Smiths. A couple of tracks also feature the Pet Shop Boys on vocals, and it still sounds amazing almost 30 years later.
I'm sorry if your budget can't reach a legit SD-1 :D I guess behringer is still cheaper. Like second hand SD-1 are plenty and go for like $30. Electro-Harmonix is also one of those brands that you always called budget friendly.
‘Wooden Jesus’ off TotD really showcases Chris Cornell’s talent, best song on the album. A collab album that gets overlooked is oysterhead: Grand pecking order. Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland and Trey Anastasio, it’s very good music.
That’s what I thought too. PSK stands for “Product of South Korea” ... also I think those “unbranded” boss clones he shows are also PSKs. They didn’t always have the initials printed on them.
Okay is there already a "sounds like bacon" shirt?^^ Could also be a pedal, JHS Bacon, a pedal that lets you dial in smooth cooking sounds or turn them up to fuzz or hi-gain madness
I could see some use for a @jhs whitenoise generator with sizzle sfx. Think like the noise oscillator in Serum, but geared more to the goofy memer internet dork rather than bassheads
Yeah if that thing is broken there is NO WAY I would fix it! That's like having a chorus and a low-fi sound all in one. Only think is gigging with it I would always be wondering if it would just quit at any moment!
That Sound JS may be stereo with RTS jacks, my old DOD FX60 uses an RTS output jack for stereo out. The input is RTS too, but the ring contact isnt terminated to anything.
Yarosov is a Russian pedal company that made A LOT of pedals in those weird big BOSS boxes, then went to using Hammond boxes. I bought some of them as recently as a few years back. I have some pics if you want to see some.
I loved this episode, it certainly put a smile on my face. The extra long Grunge pedal looked so wrong but sounded really good. FYI I ALWAYS have the box.
Masters of Reality "Sunrise on the Sufferbus" - Our incomparable Mr. Ginger Baker joins existing band with singer who sounds eerily like Jack Bruce to create album of unclassifiable alt rock, sounding like an echoing inpressionistic rendering of Cream from an alternate universe in which the concept of long blues-based guitar solos does not exist. The Smithereens "Meet the Smithereens" - The Smithereens cover "Meet the Beatles", itself an alternate American version of "With the Beatles" with three songs added and five songs (all covers) omitted, seemingly unconcerned with sounding remotely like the Beatles.

Daphon pedals, made in China, available for years on Ali Express. They will put your own brand name on them for you if you want to sell them. Temple of the Dog rocks, love that album
I've got that DL-1! I bought it at Kosmic Sound in 1989. It's branded PSK, but it says it's made in Korea. Plastic case and all. It's a great sounding analogue delay, but a touch noisy. It never worked with battery, and the 9 V plug is...loose. But when plugged into a power supply and immobilized it's a cool little toy.
Very fun episode! The mono "Stereo Chorus CE-5" clone is hilarious. Album "clone" suggestion : Let it Be Naked. It's like the original Beatles album without the Phil Spector lush/soapy orchestration. You finally hear the feel of the band on tracks like Long & winding road. Lot more feel than the original. Few differences in the songlist.
You design pedals. You run a pedal company. You make videos, complete with jams. You do record time. Two questions. One, WHERE do you have time to play guitar that you're good enough to do demos? Two, how do you have time to find esoteric pedals we had no idea existed?
I am a fan of this show, and also of heavy metal. I know you're not exactly a metalhead, but I was wondering if you would ever consider doing an episode comparing effects pedals that claim to have a "metal" sound to them (of which there are many). I would love to see and hear that.

God - they're terrible. The singer sounds like he's far more suited to some alt-country crap. And the drummer makes me want to puke.
I believe they're called the Archies, and they're a cartoon...sorry to be the one...
I fell for that. The singer and the drummer were both in Band of Joy though
@@reeeky2001 Sure, but that's not inconsistent with the singer also being in Crawling King Snakes.
Clones are great because I can't afford a Klon gold, but I can get a clone and figure out that I don't particularly like it
Look up decibelics, he makes the most accurate klon around, I love mine
The editing in this episode is one of the best. I loved it ❤️
Imagine copying the design of a pedal and you go with the Ibanez Lady Bug series.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I think Daphon earned a 10 on the shameless scale just for the series of pedals they decided to clone.
@@evitative462 Daphon were the ones that originally made the pedals produced the pedals for Ibanez so it's not really a clone.
Argh I foking hate lady bug.
@@soundpropellerpatrick113 That comes from their own words in the Malfunksun documentary.
@@sugarkitty4777 That's why it's so spot on!
Man, this was great ! Most of your videos are great, but this was something special and amazing ! Loved it !
The Jeff Beck album "Jeff" is really good, the song seasons in particular is outstanding Jeff beck and apollo 440 collaborating. Defo worth checking out for that song alone
This was sooo fun! Love the format you've created! :)
I gotta check that one out! Thanks for the intell!
You guys have the best intro graphics! Kudos!! I'll be humming that tune til bedtime now. So chill 👌😘
Alternate title: least self reflective man in pedal industry solidifies his place.
Wot.
Star Wars is just Dune with a plastic enclosure.
Nope
@ultimateguitarwizard star wars sucks, but dune is a shitty movie
Whaaaat?
Christianity is just Dune with a hard styrofoam case, and they forgot the stereo input.
@@BoardnotBored It's not true bypass that's why.
Like how you changed up the Nirvana song just enough at the end. Also kudos for not being a gear snob w those odd ball purchases! Seems these pedals are fun tools for the right job anyways
“But Josh, aren’t most pedals these days technically clones?” *sees thumbnail* “Oh, THOSE kinds of clones...”
The "'CE5"' sounded like a low fi - hip hop chorus with the noice in the back haha amazing
Talk about JHS clones
@Rumy 73 I don't think that JHS is really that straight forward about the fact the many of his "designs" are little more than tweaking a few cap and resistor values here and there of pre-existing circuits:
Wheeler Fuzz - Zvex Wolly Mammoth

Note that whilst some of these are pedals made by big businesses that probably don't care about the numbers JHS is selling, some are smaller independent builders and plenty are DIY designs where the actual designer is known. In the case of the Devi Ever pedal, he denied it was a clone for a while until it turned out that, actually it was a clone.
@Rumy 73 Everyone is straight forward about their clones, they do the same layout, color and knobs and everything, just cause they don't write a paragraph or make a vid doesn't mean they are not saying it,
JHS just charges "premium" pricing at "boutique" BS.

JHS clones have been talked about already in JHS' "Pedals I Have Killed" episode: ruclips.net/video/FIXzYTCXy1s/видео.html
A company that has the audacity to name themselves POS deserves a place in the history books.
Missed opportunity not calling this episode "Shame of Clones"

May I suggest Electronic featuring Bernard Sumner of New Order and Johnny Marr of The Smiths. A couple of tracks also feature the Pet Shop Boys on vocals, and it still sounds amazing almost 30 years later.
Should be titled: "Pedals I can actually afford"
I'm sorry if your budget can't reach a legit SD-1 :D I guess behringer is still cheaper. Like second hand SD-1 are plenty and go for like $30. Electro-Harmonix is also one of those brands that you always called budget friendly.
Not anymore after this video!

‘Wooden Jesus’ off TotD really showcases Chris Cornell’s talent, best song on the album. A collab album that gets overlooked is oysterhead: Grand pecking order. Les Claypool, Stewart Copeland and Trey Anastasio, it’s very good music.
HE HAS THE BOOOOOX!! Need that t shirt 😯
Only his says "l have". Everyone else's says "He has"...
If that shirt comes in a box, I don't even care if the shirt is missing.
Lol at your bizzaro Nirvana riffs haha. You're a great person doing great work, I appreciate you. Thank you.
Man, that “stereo” ce-5 is the ultimate lo-fi hip hop machine...
Was here to comment this. I'd actually love to record a chill track with that little sizzling noise goin the whole time.
I almost screamed as he didn't put the bumps into the dimples. MATE THOSE PEDALS, MAN! Let's see what they breed.
It's embarrassing to say this as a Korean, but Josh is wrong. PSK is made in Korea.
That’s what I thought too. PSK stands for “Product of South Korea” ... also I think those “unbranded” boss clones he shows are also PSKs. They didn’t always have the initials printed on them.

Okay is there already a "sounds like bacon" shirt?^^
Could also be a pedal, JHS Bacon, a pedal that lets you dial in smooth cooking sounds or turn them up to fuzz or hi-gain madness
Has a cool lo-fi sound to it like an old record

The Grunge pedal is a must have pedal for every jazz guitarist
Metal guitarists as well. I run mine through an 8 band FX40B EQ and get a pretty good sound.

Yarosov is a Russian pedal company that made A LOT of pedals in those weird big BOSS boxes, then went to using Hammond boxes. I bought some of them as recently as a few years back. I have some pics if you want to see some.
used or new? do they still make them? Are they/were they cheap??
The CE-5 has nice lo-fi-esque sound effects to it
Yes very reminiscent of Puma Blue
Probably my favourite shirt I’ve seen Josh wear on this show.
40 seconds in and you’ve already exceeded your quota of saying shameless in one video.
YES! More shameless clones, please. But first, a full episode on the Ibanez Tone-Lok pedal series!
The irony of this title should be lost on no one. Hell, you could rename the company this.
YESSSSSS!!!!! When I saw the title I was really hoping they would do a version of their "shameless plug" jingle and I was immediately satisfied!
Is copying a circuit okay but copying a circuit and the design is shameless? Im confused and mit sure where to draw the line.
It is not OK to copy a circuit board but copying a ciircuit is allowed.
Love the tone-deaf covers in the demos... almost hitting the mark on the hits the original pedals are known for, but just off a hair.

There is a fanzine all about POS dt-1 in Japan.
The author compared and analyzed13 different versions of them.

You design pedals. You run a pedal company. You make videos, complete with jams. You do record time. Two questions. One, WHERE do you have time to play guitar that you're good enough to do demos? Two, how do you have time to find esoteric pedals we had no idea existed?
Brilliant - thanks for another great video. I'd love to hear a record of songs made with this type of pedal.
I am a fan of this show, and also of heavy metal. I know you're not exactly a metalhead, but I was wondering if you would ever consider doing an episode comparing effects pedals that claim to have a "metal" sound to them (of which there are many). I would love to see and hear that.
I’m super jealous now brother. You have that Collings, Klon #2,.... and now an “I have the Box” t-shirt?!?! Damn man, I’m gonna go check your website and see if there is a “he has the box” t shirt.
