Paddy Obrien I really don’t believe anyone gets used to being hit, being hit in the head will only weaken it and if you are unlucky enough to get knocked unconscious even just once you might never be the same again, there was a study done on boxers who had been knocked unconscious and the consensus was that after it actually made them more vulnerable to being knocked out. You can see this in boxing if you watch it regularly enough.

The point was about hitting the chin with the vertical fist for reasons mentioned. The horizontal fist is the one for the front of the chin that knocks out. Much better to learn only a couple of punches and how to channel them aggressively into your opponent. Less is more and keep it simple. (If you get a couple of teeth in your knuckles so what? That's much better than being afraid to punch the face. Or worrying "Do I have the correct angle for a hook or should I use an uppercut?

Karate literally means “Empty Hands”. Training is the key!
Back in the day when I was training with a Karate club, we used to condition our first two knuckles by doing our push-ups on concrete with extended holds in that position. After a while, thick calluses are developed. Couple that with efficient striking techniques & with time, your fists literally become lethal weapons.
One must also develop maturity & confidence to only use them in self defense ☯️

Dr Mark, when wearing a boxing glove, does it matter what knuckles you hit with? I also notice that you slightly curve your wrist when punching? I've come across a systema practitioner online that says that curving the wrist, for instance, with a vertical punch to the face, hitting with the first 2 knuckles is actually a good idea. He uses the example of hitting with a hammer, you don't have a straight wrist when hitting, it's angled. What's your opinion? Another great video!

Food for thought. Ive been in a ton of street fights, i gave some training. Now im no where near this level. However i gotta ask. What about hardening your knuckles? I learn this years ago about hardening my knuckles. I started with taping then punching dirt, then wet, then wood, then softer stone, now i use steal beams. I mean i can fully punch steal. Ive sunk dents is car doors it the past, ive left dark purple bruises from light jabs. My question is with hardened hands is there any special techniques you might have?

Sounds like you have done a good job conditioning your knuckles well done (by the way this is how I do mine ruclips.net/video/iDnY8zdnb6g/видео.html). The point of having harder (conditionsed) knuckles is that you can hit and damage soft targets of the body. So in addition to the target spots I mentioned in this video, consider adding the sternum. It hurts like hell and you can badly bruise the area. Hope that helps.

I think I understand. Firstly developing your psychology for fighting by learning emotional control is important. Watch my other videos on dealing with fear, emotions and adrenaline.. Secondly you have to train/drill until these things become intuitive (you don't have to think about them). Only once you have both 1 and 2 then you will be able to apply.

Usually open handed strikes are preferable without gloves, as there is a lower risk of you damaging your hand hitting at a bad angle. That being said, if it puts the aggressor down it might be a small price to pay for avoiding something terrible. I'd say stick with strikes and slaps using the heel of your palm and only punch if you're confident of the hit. Hope that was helpful

      @@alpuneri2344 Somewhat helpful. Thanks.
The palm seems to lack a bit of range compared to a fist. (Then again, if an aggressor is coming forward...) But it does seem safer.
How many hobbyist martial artists have the accuracy to knock out / down an opponent, palm or fist? Very few, I imagine. So if it's going to be a numbers game (lots of strikes), palm strikes seem preferred. (According to Ramsey Dewey on RUclips, accuracy counts for more in knocking someone out than speed, power, or strength.)
My original point still creeps up: Does any (non-professional) fighter have the calmness during a real fight to knowingly select the best weapon for the presented target? Hopefully none of us will have to find out from direct experience. But I assume ample repetition in training helps.

first one to land is the best one in most street fights, trying to get too fine with this seems like folly

I’ve been in a few street fights now and I will say this. I’ve landed a punch first but what happened was this: the guys friends came near me and protected the guy who I had in a neck choke within a second of him kicking me in my legs in a soccer pickup. They called the father of the boy who was around my age and height. He was my match for sure. But I was just trying to tell him to stop kicking me. I think the solution is something I should do.

Great video Sifu. By the way, does Wing Chun have any sort of hooks, sweeps or takedowns? Thank you.

    • @alpuneri2344
      @alpuneri2344 4 года назад +2

"Traditional" wing chun doesn't really have any hooks or viable sweeps/takedowns, but organizations like the European Wing Chun Organization are bringing some more realistic sweeps/takedowns in. Still, your best bet would be classic boxing/wrestling and a solid foundation of BJJ. Wing chun is a great complimentary martial art though, with a beneficial "street" mindset. Hope that was helpful

fun fact...wing chun was considered street fighting and you wanted to remain upright and on your feet to get away if you need to.

Best technical punching info I’ve ever heard! I’ve been reconsidering face punching and preferring palm face strikes or hammer fist due to risk of a broken hand. Thoughts?

Good GOD do I love these videos. I'm constantly emphasizing on. Plus the fact in martial arts compared to boxing, the WHOLE hand is a weapon(hammer fist, palm smash, reverse/spinning punch etc...)So much substance, thank you sifu🤙☯️. Be safe, stay healthy, watch your 6 my fellow combatants.

90% of the time you get into a street fight you don't know your opponent. Therefore he/she has a disadvantage. This isn't something you do right of the bat. Because it will take a lot of practice, a long with keeping focus. Most ppl hearts will start thumping hard and your adrenaline starts rushing. Its the one that stays calm and focus that has a better chance to win. Those 2 a key elements.
