I have had a disability (severe asthma) since nine and so any kind of fighting for me is very dangerous (life threatening). I have managed thru my whole adult life to have never had to fight because I am very aware of people around me. However, five years ago I at 50 years old walking my Terrier one night was followed by 3 young drug addicts very high and clearly were going to rob me. As I turn a corner they made there move, as I turned to face them a man that moved on to my street was approaching the corner he immediately jumped into action pushing one guy into the other.. he yelled at them he didn't want to fight them and they should move on, well in the next minute they attacked and he landed knockout punches on all three and lined them up on the side walk, this all happened so fast I had not even finished calling the police. Their really are incredible heros out there and he would take no offer of thanks from me even tho I told him I might have lost my life if he hasn't intervened. He was true hero. I made sure I found where he lived and sent him quite the Christmas holiday hamper! I will never forget that night how lucky I was to have someone who grew up with family of Englishman Boxers.
I am also disabled. I have some training from my Vietnam veteran father so I can go, but like you I don't have much stamina. My thing is on top of combat training I also know medical stuff from my sibling and mother. In my case as I know I won't last long I go for the most damage I can from any source. I try to walk the line between my training and being straight up feral, but it's very very difficult. First try to avoid. Second use what you can do. After that you don't have much of a choice but to go feral and hope you trained enough for the feral to have a touch of discipline. It doesn't always work, but nothing is 100% I hope you don't get in such a situation, but try to not let the adrenaline rule you. Practically anything can be used as a weapon if wielded properly. Best of luck and I hope you never have to actually use violence on anyone. If you know they will attack regardless try to distract. Get them laughing, then flee or get the alpha with everything you have. That might scatter the group. Remember the best weapon is almost always your mind.
In my corner of the martial world we call it Retzev- continuous motion. You give 100% until the threat is gone. This is a fantastic video- one of the very best Sensei Mark has done in my humble opinion. I’ve followed this channel since 3000 subs or so- what a journey!!!
I worked as a bouncer (Doorman) for eight years, and I fully agree with everything said in this video. Add in a couple of simple takedowns, sweeps, etc. and you're set.

Everyone is throwing those wild haymakers and the ones who got knocked were blocked and hit with consecutive close strikes ... you got a subscriber
1:09 Adrenaline won't stop you getting knocked out if you're hit with a knock out punch. Some of the greatest athletes in the world are boxers, they are flooded with adrenaline during a fight, if they get clipped on the sweet spot they're going down like a rag doll. Adrenaline will not stop you getting knocked out, but a strong guard covering your chin and a strong neck can help prevent it.
Brilliant, Mark! You have a great knack for explaining things clearly and succinctly. Likewise, what you demonstrated are the kind of "real deal" techniques that work in the street. Practitioners of every style would greatly benefit from understanding the flow of combinations and concepts you presented. I especially liked how you controlled the "inside space" (Japanese word: "Kukan", the "space where everything is happening") so the attacker couldn't effectively land his haymakers. Thanks! Keep in mind that style and system are what contains the knowledge. A style is just one's own expression of combat. A system, on the other hand is a collection of various styles within a stated system. Each have their own variation. As each man, or woman, has their own particular physical structure which will dictate their ability for action. Age also is a factor, as is any physical limitation. The best BJJ, for example, will be hindered, in some ways, by injury or age. No matter whether one does a standup, with ground, there will still be restrictions, on some days, other days you have your "game" on! I would say it is a fair statement to make that no one is better than another in all cases. But each of us learn as we continue to grow. Making the distinction between what you practice, and why. Mark is a brilliant teacher, and one of the handful (in my humble opinion) "real world" practitioners that I have had the pleasure to watch. Though I only know him through his youtube presentations, it is my past experience (62 years at the time of this writing) of training, teaching, and "Pavement arena" participation (that is Geoff Thompson's term, not mine), which lends me to "tell" who is the "real deal" and who is not. Listen to this gentleman, who is both a good teacher and scholar, he will not steer you wrong!

Good stuff as always. I would love to hear your approach to what I call "old guy self defense" for people with physical limitations. By example, I was showing a friend some self-defense. He's older with type 1 diabetes and enough muscle wasting to make me concerned about bone density, so he can't train hard and balance is an issue. I had to retool what I was showing him to be things that would allow him to be underestimated since he'll never win on physicality. One of the things I taught him was to "accidentally fall" against a potential antagonist (pre fight, not during) so you can check his legs and feel which way his arms are moving. Another was just redefining an objective to "you need to get past him, not beat him" so here's how to turn his head to make that space. Cheers.
It's the calm yet slightly sinister smile after every video that gets me lol. I always found in Kickboxing and Krav, that a high guard whilst implementing those sliding elbow and rising elbow blocks VERY effective. And much safer than slipping and rolling. Imho the problem with slipping and rolling in anything outside Boxing, is you're open to other limbs and can get banged out much quicker as something will always hit you. Nothing is full proof obviously! But, I think a high guard and what you're showing here is about as effective as it gets. Love this channel! I'm guessing you've done various martial arts. But, judging by your striking I'm guessing more Krav/self defence based stuff over everything else!!??!
#fightboss - and definitely practice hammer fists in a makiwara or heavy bag - just because it's not your knuckles doesn't mean you don't need to toughen up that part of your fist.
Every since I got attacked by two guys, I've been interested in self-defense and martial arts. It wasn't that I wasn't capable, it just I wasn't skilled. Very traumatizing experience.

Its always stuck with me, on my first day of my Krav maga classes I've been taking the last 4 months my instructor told us violence can only be met with more violence. You always keep going till the threat is no longer a threat. Train train train and train hard. Then always hope you don't find yourself in a violent situation.
That cover & elbows thing saved me from serious harm getting mugged, it’s relatively instinctive too. I was able to back up against a car, took punches to body and top of my head but was able to keep my brain going. Fuckers didn’t get my wallet either.
One the really BIG problems with these kids today in a street fight is, They Grab you around your Waste, pic you up off your feet and SLAM you on the ground. That's Really! bad.
I follow your video for a while and it aspires me a lot. Thank you for your effort! I have a question, how can you protect yourself from aggressive woman, like instead of punching, they have tendency of use their 'claws'. If you grabe them, they can still use sharp nail to injure your hand, and you cannot hit them in the face like for guys. So my point is how should i neutrelize their aggressiveness or protect myself without hitting them to unconscious?

But i'm still wondering if there are other self defense technique against those nails and claws in close space, like catch the hands of the person and wait for them to cool down. In close space, if you were catched and curl yourself down, the attacker wont stop and then you have less choice: hit them or let yourself be attacked for hours (my case).

One move I use when someone strangling me Majority of people who strangle put their hands on around the whole throat, that takes a lot strength to choke people ( I should know as I've been self harming majority of my life) Best counter is using your two thumbs and apply pressure to the Adam's apple , they have to release the grip on your after you've that done move don't need to be strong to apply technique

I can see that you are very skilled, but the truth of the matter is if you primarily guard your head as you do, then what do you do about the left body hook? (liver punch) That single blow can end a fight and leave you utterly defenseless.
How do you defend yourself against professional fighters off the cuff with no experience? Like basically actions. If you can do a video on that, that would be something new.

Unfortunately many times. In my younger years I've experienced gang violence, racial attacks, credible death threats, violence related to nightclub security. All unpleasant experiences. Nothing to be proud. Violence is unnecessary.

What I did bro just tilted my head down walked into the punch she through then walked away. Just walk that's all walk. HAVE A GREAT DAY.

Yes you can, although you need to practice surprise attacks and lots of stress based scenarios. Of course heavy sparring helps as well. Good luck.

Unfortunately many times. In my younger years I've experienced gang violence, racial attacks, credible death threats, violence related to nightclub security. All unpleasant experiences. Nothing to be proud. Violence is unnecessary.
