Dragon Ball Is Evolving, Just Backwards. And That's Good. Here's Why.

  • For Dragon Ball to truly succeed in the 2020s, it needs to learn from its past. Dragon Ball GT could be a very important lesson for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to study and become the best movie in years. Here's why.
Dragon Ball is evolving, just backwards. And that's good. The last two trailers of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie which is coming out in late April in Japan have definitely warmed audiences up to the whole ambience of the movie that it's trying to go for. Let's discuss how the show has evolved over the years and changed to fit its new identity. How Goku grew up and battled Piccolo, how we got Super Saiyan against Frieza, how we learnt about the Supreme Kais and the likes of Beerus. How can DBS become a brand new show again? Learn from GT and rely on the journey that was laid down in the Emperor Pilaf saga; and ROLL WITH IT. #DragonBall #DragonBallSuper #DragonBallSuperSuperHero #DragonBallZ #DBZ #DBS

I myself am tired of the blatant modern anime clichés I can see in Super, and that's why I don't cringe much when watching the classics (from OG to Z), or episodes that have direct and/or active references to the OG or Z.

Not sure. I liked the Moro Saga, but am waiting for the movie, and Granolah's conclusion, before deciding. Like you said, it would be cool to have Pan become a main character and go on adventures parallel to Goku's. Maybe even get that Universe 6 tour that was teased years back.
That said, part of me still can't help but be interested in a reboot...

I think an interesting approach if the series is going to return to its more adventure-focused roots might be to have two plots running in parallel to one another. You could have the likes of Goku, Vegeta, Brolly, and parts of the older generation exploring the multiverse established in Super, giving us a window into the other 11 universes. Meanwhile the younger generation could have their own adventures around Earth showing how things have changed since Goku's childhood journey.

The multiverse trip is truly something a DB can pull off. We have 11 completely different universes (Well, I guess there is universe 6, but they are quite unique in their own right) and why not spend time on them? The base universe of Dragon World already had near infinite potential, so multiplying it by 12 is like getting a good feast and then adding even more of it.

The moment Goku was revealed as an alien, it took Dragon Ball and the Shounen Genre to a new level. Then the introduction of Trunks and the Androids are basically adding a new layer to the story. The best part about Dragon Ball is that it constantly changes its genre, and it keeps its roots at the same time. Right now most of the Shounen are applying this principle.

If they can write it well, I'd love to see a second attempt at the "grand tour" idea:
For some reason or another, the youngest (Pan, Bulla, Maron, Uub) want to set out to space - which their parents only begrudgingly allow after they manage to drag Trunks and Goten into it as "guardians". With Bulma packing them a lunch box consisting of a space ship the size of an apartment building (which Trunks and Bulla barely understand enough about to keep it from entirely falling apart), along with other amenities, they set out and have their space adventures on all the known and unknown planets.
Meanwhile, every other chapter/episode gives us a glimpse at the multiversal upheaval Goku, Vegeta and the other heavy hitters are currently investigating for the Angels. While initially seemingly unconnected aside from a crossover here or there, the two storylines eventually converge, as it turns out that many of the challenges the kids faced were connected to all that - so it all culminates in the now very experienced and well coordinated youngsters supporting the old guard in the final conflict against the BBEG.

Sure, DBZ was good but its focus on fights can't work well for so many arcs in a row, especially with the execution of Super. I would love to see the characters we know and love to go on an adventure again. Let them go to on of the other universes, let the younger characters go on a seperate journey, but I think the "main cast" could go on a journey as well.
Just look at One Piece. One Piece reached (in comparison in terms of power scaling) basically the Frieza saga with the current arc and it still has its sense of adventure every arc and it doesn't fall apart even though the Strawhats are one of the strongest crews in the world of One Piece right now. You know its a strange one I do feel Super is closer to original Dragon Ball than Z. Not in regards to the art style. Toriyama was always a fan of using strong characters being unassuming. Giant beefcakes was more of a GT thing. To me it feels like with Toei getting direct guidelines and Toyotaros editor seemingly being a yes man we're getting the story exactly how Toriyama wants it. But that necessarily isn't a good thing. The best parts of the android saga was because the editor intervened, cell saga too. And because Jump effectively forced Toriyama's hand we got the Buu saga which hit or miss depending on who you ask is one of my favourites.
I'm not saying Super is bad because of this. Goku Black arc has been my favourite in both the anime and manga. But it really feels that those serious DBZ moments are almost lost on Super and that is a shame because I do feel you could have both.

Sometimes you have to go back to the basics to move forward. Dragon Ball has a strong base that made fans fall in love with it in the first place so going back to it makes sense. As long as they keep it up, Dragon Ball will continue to get better.

Honestly I got right behind you when you said Uub's name, anything that has him as an active member of the cast and where he can get some ACTUAL development is fine by me. Now I haven't read the Moro Arc as I'm waiting for the anime so I don't know if Uub there has good character development or not, but anything is better then what they did to him after they had him turn into Majuub with him getting the shaft after his first major fight. It was just disgusting, with him not even being useful in the very next Arc against Super 17, to paraphrase from Saiyan Scholar, he was like Krillin against Perfect Cell when Majuub tried to fight Super 17. He was supposed to be the second strongest person on the planet and he was utterly useless against him and Omega Shenron later down the line. Long rant short, I just feel like he deserved better and I pray he's done well in Dragon Ball Super.

I would love to see Dragonball go back to it's traditional Dragonball hunting origins, rather than powerful bad guy appears, fight, story arch over. Old Dragonball and even GT had an adventure where they end up coming across a strong bad guy.
But I guess Goku can now cover the entire Earth in a bunch of times in just 1 seco- but wait, in GT Goku had to travel the universe to find the Dragonball's and that is something Goku can't scour the entirety of in se- wait whis... Gosh darn it.
I guess if they decided to bring a non fight focused Adventure into the main series the Universe hopping Super Dragonballs would need to be the stakes, or Beerus and Whis would need to be busy.

  • @Merennulli

I still feel they need to do spinoffs. The Mystic Adventure of Pan, Great Saya-man and His Super-Friends, Gohan's Conference Spectacular, and Dragonball Z-2.
The audience they're striving for on Sunday mornings would be more suited to the Adventure style story, and we've recently seen Inuyasha pull its spinoff Yashihime out of a nasty tailspin and solidly stick the landing with the plot threads duct taped at the end for a possible next season hinting at a new adventure that isn't retreading old ground (the major mistake of season 1). There's space for a next generation spinoff going fully back to its roots. You need an excuse for the characters to be off on their own like a character getting in trouble and being told to make things right on their own to give that character (probably Pan) an excuse to go across the world seeking the dragonballs without extreme help.
Honestly, the middle two were jokes, but they could benefit from a shorts series to play off the comedic elements sort of like TFS's HFIL series. Seeing the misadventures of Great Saya-Man, or Gohan trying to keep his work life on track while some offscreen evil is fighting his dad, or other nonsense would both give more exposure to the franchise and give an outlet for the nonsense that doesn't work as canon but that audiences want to see on occasion.
And DBZ2... one of the biggest complaints about Super is, as you said, that it's trying to be Z while aiming for the Sunday morning demographic. Obviously "2" is too obvious and some grittier name would be helpful, but a spinoff that can carry on the brutal fights that certain parts of the fandom want. And most likely, of these spinoffs, this is the best one to drop "Dragonball" from the name. Have the characters cursed to be unable to be wished back, or sent to Universe 13 that doesn't have Dragonballs, or something else so death briefly seems to have consequences. Until the new MacGuffin makes it so it doesn't. The focus could be Goku and Vegeta accomplishing some larger mission through a series of arcs that mostly involve temporary characters like Suno who we get to know but who don't continue in the main cast as a "Wait for Goku" squad.
The main thing is to separate the characters. Pan can't be relevant with her father helping her every time things get even slightly tough. The Z-fighters who aren't Goku and Vegeta can't be relevant with Goku and Vegeta completely outclassing them. And Goku and Vegeta even lose something when the story is constantly having to make excuses for them to not be there to inject the "Wait for Goku" squad fights.

Having a storyline with the younger generation is probably the best way to grow the franchise, especially if we leave certain already over exposed adults out of the way most of the time. With Pan, Bra, Marrin, Uub, Trunks, Goten and maybe one of Android 17’s kids you actually have a good core of heroes. And DBS already gave us the villain (such as he is) to face them - Emperor Pilaf and Co. I can already think of one conflict with that set-up: Trunks having to deal with his complicated feelings towards Mai (and vice versa). As for other adults, maybe limit it to a couple characters who could use the development. Maybe they can finally give Videl something to do?
So for this cast we’d have:
    Pan: the hero
Bra: the Princess (which she is)
    Marrin: the good girl
    Trunks: the Genius
    Goten: the “dude”
Uub: the fish out of water
    17’s kid: not sure
    Videl: the Adult.
    Pilaf: The bungling villain
Mai: the bad girl the Genius falls for.
Yeah, I think this could work.

I think Marron is more complex than that. Start with the squib in muggle kindergarten, not knowing the right things to say to belong or seem cool, but also be taken seriously. After years of trial and error, she learns how to lie to be believed. Her family and friends, she decides, are her secrets to keep, and anyone who wouldn’t believe her doesn’t deserve to know. But by middle school, rumors get around. “Watch what you say around Marron, or she’ll tell her parents, and they will BREAK you.” Not wanting her family and friends to feel guilty on her behalf, she keeps her struggles private, putting on music to cheer herself up before telling her parents with a big smile that everything’s great. She stays supportive of her family and friends, while avoiding most of the regular kids at school, stopping to occasionally tell a plausible lie to squash a rumor that could get them into trouble. She feels that it is her duty to keep all these secrets a secret, so the people close to her can keep their happy lives. But the breaking point could come during high school, when Goten is finally going on dates. Goten is trying to be a regular boy, and dating is what regular boys do. But the Saiyan in him can’t stand this stuff. He’d go through girl after girl, trying to find someone as exciting as Videl or Chichi, asking Trunks how he was able to find someone cool like Mai, while he’s stuck with no one but boring normal girls. …And that’s why Marron is complicated.

I think it's similar to The Uncanny Valley effect when it comes to CGI characters in live-action movies. It never looks quite right unless the story is about how they don't look the same as everything else around them.

It makes me think about how I’d love to see different Dragonball Series with one following Goku and Vegeta and the other following the Z fighters on earth. Gohan will fight Cell but Cell will now have Gohan Genes, half breed saiyan potential or something like that. I don't believe much in this possibility...returning to Goku and just the Dragon Ball Z big serious fight with strong enemy thing is not something they did just with GT, Dragon Ball Z did it first. Goku dying in the Cell Saga and Gohan taking his place as protagonist could have been just that. The start of a new journey, the path of a new younger hero to follow. The problem is what could have that journey really looked like? When you think about it, we did "explore" the Dragon Ball Earth in the OG and after that, it seemed to have suddenly got smaller, with just showing either big cities or islands in the vast ocean or wastelands for the heroes to fight the villains in....the world lost the appeal. What could have Gohan have done there that wasn't already seen with Goku? So it was either create something new to explore, like GT did with space, or, I don't know, some kind of Demon World maybe?
But they didn't. They thought l"et's just create a new big bad guy and find a way to defeat him again, let's go through it all but with Gohan, except no, people want Goku bad and he works with this kind of stuff so...let's do that instead." And Super has been much of the same.
It's sad because Super introduced the Multiverse concept but they did in a confusing way. Take the MCU Multiverse, the way it is explained after the events of Lokis is pretty much different universes are born from branches in an original timeline, so a different universe is one were things at some point in history have gone in a different direction than the one the MCU heroes are in.
In Super there's both different universes and different timelines, Universes just seem to be separated Universes like Galaxies are different Galaxies. That's much less interesting to me, the classic Multiverse interpretation in media would have allowed for example to travel in a Universe where Goku's life went differently, maybe there's no Frieza, so the Sayans live on and dominate the Universe and Kakarot have taken over and he's "the Sayan Emperor" and rules over the galaxy like Frieza did. Think about Goku and Vegeta trapped in this universe dominated by a Sayan Empire, traveling from planet to planet maybe with alternatives versions of their allies and enemies, making their way liberating this universe while looking for a way to go home, until they get to the main villain of the saga....Kakarot himself. Wouldn't have it been much more entertaining than this?
But the creators don't seem to have the "guts" to get creative and Super has been a retalling of an already seen story, today is a God, tomorrow is a reborn enemy, then it's a wizard, again, then it's an enemey from the past of the sayans, and there's this new transformation, where Goku's hair are red instead of yellow, then are blue, then are silver....it's just the same, over and over.

Why can't we consider the idea of having multiple series set up in the Dragon Ball Universe? Instead of viewing continuations as one singular story, why not have different stories set up within this one universe (a la DC or Marvel comics)? Then you can have your gritty stories, as well as your slice of life and adventure stories.
From a TV standpoint, this had existed for a bit in the Doctor Who universe. At one point there were three different shows for three different demographics. You still had the main story (Doctor Who) but for those who wanted the more adult story, you had Torchwood, and for those who wanted a show for the little ones, you had The Sarah Jane Adventures. Why not incorporate that into the DB Universe?
