I like Gas' transformation from one liner grunt to someone with a personality. As someone who loves techniques that create stuff (like Gray's Ice Make or Green Lanturn Rings), i like his abilities especially the cubes. They're like a callback to Hearts' cubes. Also like how he ties in to Goku having fought his father Bardock in the past. Although wasn't really a fan of his latest depiction in the recent chapter 82 (the bathroom jokes). Also not looking forward to another flashback sequence. All in all, he's not the greatest antagonist but is interesting to say the least, in my opinion

@S92 I mean it takes place 7 years after Majin buu’s defeat, plus two years from bog and res f together, and the universe 6 vs 7 tournament, and goku black saga, and the tournament of power and Broly (you can take the goku balck saga one away since it was during that saga but it was a filler episode they used the dragon balls) so.. we are way past the main z end of z timeline now 🤔

Gas is someone you would feel sorry for if anything, he clearly has an inferior complex and believes he owes Elec everything and doesn't want to disappoint him because of how much Elec has invested in him. Gas currently being U7s strongest warrior doesn't mean he will demonstrate the characteristics of the strongest, in many ways you could say Gas doesn't know who he is truly is himself since he has spent a majority of his life trying to live up to Elecs will. Gas is overly dependent on Elecs validation, which is probably what Bardock saw and used against Gas to win imo

I mostly agree with your points about Gas, but I never saw him as the main villain of this arc. So even if he does become forgettable it wouldn't matter as much to me, like you said, Gas is tool for Elec's will. Gas himself confirms this in Chapter 82 so in reality Gas was never truly the main villain, what I do like about Gas is his weapon creation abilities and how versatile Gas fights with it.

As a collective, the Heetas are an interesting group. In a story where the stories usually boil down to "punch evil until it dies", bad guys who want to control the universe by controlling the flow of money and information instead of through power and fear like villains prior is a refreshing change of pace. And for people who care about the lore of Freeza, knowing that the Heetas used to work both sides by paying Freeza to take on specific planets while taking most of the profits from the races that paid Freeza for these planets to make back the money is a deep cut of Dragon Ball lore.
But break them down individually, none of them can really hold a candle to the likes of Piccolo Daimao, Vegeta, Freeza, Goku Black, or Moro.
Elec being more a sly schemer is interesting, but he lacks the over the top maniacal evil charisma that defines a lot of Dragon Ball villains.
Oil and Macki are just your standard big dumb guy and pretty sassy lady, and only get use as comic relief. Which is needed, as a way to break up the otherwise relentless seriousness, and Toyotaro has said his favorite scenes in this arc are the comedic ones. But otherwise, they don't have a lot of utility.
And Gas is just another strong, stoic antagonist that doesn't have much personality. Aside from the scenes meant for comedy, you can kind of tell how he'll react to just about everything after you've seen him react to one thing. I'm calling it now, when Goku learns what Bardock did to beat Gas and tries to copy it, Gas is either going to be super excited or have a complete mental breakdown.
I enjoy the Heetas as a collective, but I expect that even if/when Super comes back as an anime, they won't exactly leave an impact on the wider fandom.

The Heetas, as a group, work because they have a good dynamic and play off of each other very well. Especially Oil and Macki in their comedy scenes. But if you tried to bring in an isolation booth and figured out what makes them tick individually, they fall apart.

But does it make sense to judge them without the group dynamics they excel in? Sounds unfair criticizing them for not being exactly what they are not.
Let us hypothetically "flip" it. What if the *team* was composed of charatcers that each work in a vacuum, but had no dynamics within the group? I would say that should be worse by having the team aspect be pointless.

    • @Trunks1stApprentice
      @Trunks1stApprentice 2 года назад +1

@@Bezaliel13 I think it makes sense and is entirely fair, considering how they're being used in the story. If you're going to use the characters in multiple configurations, ANY configuration, then they need to be strong enough characters to carry those configurations. Otherwise, don't bother. Play with their strengths, or don't play at all.
If the Ginyu Force insist on fighting the Dragon Team in one-on-one battles, then each Ginyu better be interesting enough to carry the story for however long they're going solo. Guldo is a waste of space, Recoome is a meathead, Butta and Jeice don't have personalities, and Ginyu is your standard arrogant mini-boss. They're fun when they're together and doing their Sentai bit. But if they're going to split up into solo matches or just spend any length of time alone, they need to have the personality for it. And they really don't.
If the Heetas are putting all of their eggs into their super strong brother Gas being able to solo all three challengers, then super strong brother Gas better have a strong enough personality that the audience can enjoy him during this time where he gets more spotlight than his family. Elec is still suitably suave and slimy in every panel he's in, so he has that going for him. It also helps that he's rarely alone and can always play off other characters. And Oil and Macki were designed to be a double act, so they're always paired together. But besides "oh, Gas, our dear brother, you're so strong. Kick all of their asses" when he's with his family, Gas doesn't have any personality. He's just copying the strong, silent, stoic mold that we're so sick of by now, and it leads to ridiculously predictable situations. And if he's our main antagonist that we're expecting Goku to throw down with, he'd better be able to handle one-on-one combat without his family there for banter. And I don't think he can handle it.

    • @Bezaliel13
      @Bezaliel13 2 года назад +2

      @@Trunks1stApprentice
But the "configuration" you are criticizing is in lone characters, and I also cannot see this angle on varied team configurations as a criticism against "team dynamics focused" characters, for writing focused on team dynamics should be better with handling different team configurations because of _team dynamics being the main focus in writing the characters._
This next paragraph seems to conflate character writing with character... abilities. I am not sure how much I can say about character traits being separate from character writing beyond pointing out the former is in *fight choreography.* I feel like wording really matters when talking about the character writing of fictional characters.
Your last paragraph had a fair point on Gas being flat, but undermines itself by pointing out that he has his family to balance his character out, especially by complaining about the strong silent type. Seriously, his family is the "refreshing change of pace" with Gas, being information brokers instead of mighty invaders, that worked together to buff their muscle into the ultimate. As a counterpoint, while Gas is busy fighting, and his siblings are cheering for him, Elec is free to be up to something, *unlike most DB villains.*
Elec: "Mwuhaha, while you were busy and distracted, I did a thing!"

A problem with many dragon ball villains - They are SAID to be powerful, but never are shown to be. Vegeta blew up an entire planet just for the sake of it before even landing on Earth, it showed us just what a threat we were dealing with. OG Broly destroyed a QUARTER OF THE UNIVERSE. But what did Gas do? Well, he throws trains at Goku.
We don't see stakes. This very well could be an early DBZ fight, when everyone wasn't a galaxy level threat. Like, manifest some planets or stars and explode them into somebody's face, man, you should have more than enough power to do that!
I hope that the anime will provide a proper fight sequence/build up. But even if they don't change much of the fight, at least make it look spectacular. The Instant transmission chase sequence has a potential to be one of the greatest animated moments of Dragon Ball if done correctly.
But right now we are faced with the Jiren problem - He is SAID to be powerful, not shown.

Jiren is a absolute force of nature and is shown to be multiple time......in the anime. The manga fell short on this very hard to the point Jiren looks just like everyone else there. In the anime, everyone was actively avoiding Jiren and when Jiren gets involved in anything, it is a squashfest. Even knocked back the Spirit Bomb and fought off a new transformation, something every single villain cant say(Beerus doesn't really count)

Honestly I disagree with that approach. Given enough time writing power escalation, there just reaches a point where you can’t visually depict greater levels of strength. All that would be shown is speedlines upon speedlines, afterimages galore, and so much destruction, the magnitude of it can’t impress you anymore. Honestly, while it’s inaccurate to the characters’ power, grounding the fights is better for the reading experience.

Gas is the only one of the Heeters that I paid any significant attention to, as a whole, all of them are one-dimensional in their ambitions and attitudes, except for Gas, who has been showing more of himself as time passes, as well as narration pointing more at him than, say, Elec.
Gas' loyalty to Elec may not be subject to change unless for some reason, he loses Elec. He doesn't seem to show the same degree of care toward or for Oil and Maki, so he clearly has a definition for "who's the boss of this outfit", and if either of them tried to take charge, they'd find themselves more at Gas' mercy than him at theirs. My biggest critique about heaters and many of the other dbs antagonists is I feel they too often share similar designs. It makes it harder to distinguish. You look back at regular Dragonball and the variety of designs were plenty.
You had human villains of various shape, sizes and styles during the red ribbon arc. Anthormorphic characters like boss carrot, oolong, puar, and some of the fighters in the tournaments.
Demonic looking characters like king piccolo and his monsters, baba’s old movie monsters, dinosaurs randomly walking about.
And pilaf gang with one of each.
In dbz it expanded further by playing around with goku’s style with raditz and Vegeta variants, than aliens like freeza, bug/monster forms like cell and buu.
But by perfect cell there appeared to be a reversion of type. I love perfect cell design but it feels very freezaesque. The base body and face is very similar just bigger and more color/wings. Evil buu and especially super buu then look a lot like perfect cell did.
I was happy when they went back to anthropomorphic animals with beerus and his clothes made him standout. But then little creativity with freeza and goku black arcs - reused designs and even zamasu doesn’t look that different from kaioshin/supreme kai.
The goat design from Moro was another unique anthropomorphic form but then they just turned him into cell again. Hit is another character that looks like a piccolo/pikon variant.

I kind of hope that Gas will survive this saga and will end up becoming a better character going forward. But honestly: I wouldn't know how. Maybe Granolah and Gas could become allies and go bounty hunting through the universe defeating targets to atone for their crimes? While the other Heeters continue their crimes without Elec, but become more like the Pilaf gang were in the original Dragon Ball series? 🤔
    I dunno, it's difficult to think of ways where and how to keep them relevant and memorable. ^^;

Gas lacks a lot of agency. He doesn't dictate his own actions, instead working entirely for Elec. It's like if Buu had been under Babidi's thumb for the entire Buu Saga. However, at the same time, Elec doesn't really feel like the big bad. He can't really defend himself like Babidi could (magic shields, mind control etc) so, to me, he doesn't feel like a threat.

Gas's greatest failing is that he's identifiable as the big bad. The Heeters are a family but they aren't a team. You'd expect all four of them to have a stable role in the plot with each supporting the other to create a threat greater than the sum of its parts. I'm not saying you can't work in plots of past rivalries with Gas, or manipulative brothers like Elec, but I think the story has failed to create 4 incredible characters by mismanaging the group balance. It's worth noting this story isn't supposed to be heavily reliant on its villains like the Moro or Namek arcs, but frankly, Granolah isn't in a much better position either. So far his story is more Bardock's history. I really like all the Bardock stuff this arc, but the writing is failing to juggle Granolah, the Saiyans, and 2 Heeters (because they're not even trying to work Maki and Oil into this plot anymore).

Though I feel Gas isn't the 'True' Villian

  • @Haar_Dragon

I figure Gas here has the same problems as Granolah, but a bit less pronounced. The same problem as the whole structure of the saga in general. He is here for something mostly unrelated to Goku and Vegeta, and to Earth. Our main characters, who we (that is, most of us) have grown up with, are basically ancillary. Goku is a proxy for Bardock, and really the story is about Granolah, who isn't very well-integrated.
We've gotten some good stuff - I love Goku getting some insight into his origins, and Granolah vs Ultra Ego was also really great. But what makes this saga interesting is the Saiyan stuff. It's not Gas. Gas, and the other Heeters as well (or Hieters, for those of us who say Frieza), are just a narrative device that allows these other things to happen. Elec has _some_ chessmaster planning elements going on, and I wouldn't be surprised if he escapes to return as a villain again later, but Oil, Maki and Gas are just window-dressing. And Gas is the main threat. And he's window-dressing. This is a problem.
Imagine if Recoome was a main villain, but also didn't do sentai poses. It just wouldn't work. He's large and strong, that's his bit.

Hmm its weird. I think I'll have an easier time remembering them more than all of Sanganbo's gang. But as a whole they've done less fighting than the former. I think for Gas its gonna come down to his weapons.
But one more thing that we also might be overlooking is that characters aren't just remembered for themselves but the pair around them.
And in the same way SS Goku and Frieza, SS2 Gohan and Cell, Ultra Ego Vegeta and Granola are linked. I believe that if Goku really does do something interesting with UI so too will Gas and Goku and Bardock will be linked as well. And that is also how we'll remember the character.

Maybe Gas will be remembered once they make him playable in video games. “He’s doing the thwomps, he’s doing the- crap, straight into kunai!”
The unearned power is one problem. Another is taking too long to develop his character. It’s not until last chapter that we see him as the little brother trying to prove to onii-san that he’s not just a scared little kid anymore. And now that we know it… it clashes with the “suddenly the strongest in the universe” part. He finally gets over his inner hulk and we get the widdwe bwuddah trying to be useful to Elec?
Also, Elec, I was counting on you to be the guy with a backup plan for your backup plan for your first backup plan. I was hoping he had just gotten off the phone with Goichi, the old man whose android was stolen by Granolah way back in the beginning. ,gas is no different from raditz(who outside what if's was a plot device for goku's death/finding out about the saiyans that easily could've gone to vegeta.)nappa(who at least had great expressions, fighterz having everyone making fun of how behind he is,getting karma'd by yamcha and even thinking frieza's a jerk.) or android 19,gas just took long with giving him more to his character and being more of a weapon(and showing the series after this needs to just stop with the escalation and transformations as contrary to it's sayings there is a limit.) when he had enough of a arc with bardock/inferiority to granolah.
and outside classic/vegeta in z and android 21/makai residents most are pretty basic(and the series is pretty outdated compared to other shonen jump series relying on it's main stars popularity over it's other characters that are more interesting.) but have memorable moments to balance it out.
would also say compared to bojak's threat they feel like the saiyans could easily take them though compared to zamasu(who's as pretentious as a bleach/naruto villain without the understandable beginnings.),jiren(who was forced to become a villain when goku was the antagonist and could've done more with his master's killer identity.) and moro(who should've been a makaioshin/tied to dabura & towa instead of just an evil wizard, became cell and showed goku needs to grow already /drop his stupidity going to "why do we rely on this guy" levels.) i think they work but only care about macki and oil surviving the end.

Anyway, I'm just saying that you don't have to make the what if, I'm just pointing it out.

They did Gas so dirty the 1st black alien as a villain. Last chapter smh I like his ruthless nature calm. Of course love his design.

God I hate the Cerealian Dragon Balls. They're so unbalanced and fanfic-tier convenient.
    >Grants wishes easily beyond the creator's power.
    >Never turn to stone, no recharge time, if you can find them you can make the wish immediately.
    >Only 2 Balls to find. As long as you have 2 friends with abilities matching *Arc 2* Kid Goku you have infinite wishes.
    >Scatter across Planet Cereal, rather than nay larger scale space
These Dragon Balls are better than the Black Star Balls from GT and the Super Dragon Balls combined. and quite simply I hope the arc kills Monaito so these balls go away forever.
